OMG SPRING BREAK!

**Does a beer bong**

**Flashes everyone**

**Hooks up with a random guy who may or may not have given a fake name**

(On the plus side, the view is gorgeous, the water's clear, the sun is awesome, and the people who visit the beach are damn pretty. This is a helluva place for people watching.)

This is the main beach if you are looking for the traditional public sandy beach.  Hotels on one side of the road, beach on the other.  Great strip for mopeding.  Easily accessible.  Fun time

We went in the summer, on a weekday and we were the only ones at the beach.  We walked out pretty far from the shore, the water was nice and clear.  If you want to go to the beach in Key West, here's the place to go.

Key West is not known for their beaches but this one isn't bad. In fact the Travel Channel voted Smathers Beach one of their TOP TEN beaches in Florida.

In the winter during Spring Break it is packed but in the summer, forget it. You could drop a bomb in the middle and not hit anybody due to the intense heat of both the sand and water (both in the 90's)

It is Key West's largest beach and runs along the southern shore of the island for almost 2 miles. Beach activity ranges from tanning, volleyball, and watersport/beachsport rentals.

The sand is brought in from the Bahamas according to Key West lore and deposited here. Tropical storms also have a habit of sweeping the sand away, and nearly every other year the city of Key West replenishes the beach.

You can leave your surfboard home  when you stay here though because the miniscule swell is not even a ripple. Snorkelers have a swim zone to enjoy just offshore - small stuff...mostly.

Vending trucks are parked outside on the street to offer snacks, beverages, chairs, and rafts.

To get there through Key West, take South Roosevelt Blvd. To get there from the Key West airport take Bertha Street.

It also aims east so if you get up early enough, you can watch the sunrise, then head over at night to see the Sunset at Mallory Square.

I'm not a beach rat; I just came here to see the sunrise one morning during my vacation.  Apparently there are not many beaches in Key West, but this is one of the two largest.

The beach was nearly deserted at that hour.  It was difficult to find, but perhaps that's a bonus.  There was plenty of seaweed, jellyfish, and other detritus on the beach, but I didn't come for swimming or hanging out, so it didn't bother me.

I can't vouch for the activity or amenities during peak times, but for that quiet early hour it was a lovely place to watch a sunrise.
