I've come here enough times to fill out a couple of their stamp card thingys so I feel like I can confidently say their burgers (their true bleeding MEAT burgers, not this strange newfangled contraption called a vegetarian patty) are pretty MEDIOCRE. They get the job done, but Barney's does it so much better. The price of convenience I suppose.

HOWEVER. I WILL have to stress that their fries are pretty frickin good. Especially their garlic fries. On good days, they give a ton of garlic, which makes everything afterward smell ... well garlicky. But its a crazy journey of garlic and fried combo goodness while it lasts.

Also their soups are solid, although I never really could get into buying soups when they have a burger on the menu (as mediocre as it may be). I might venture as to say the soups are quite good. The salads here are also GINORMOUS. If you feel like a rabbit and can eat a TON of green veggies, this may be a good choice for you as well. Happy eating. :B

Portions are generous at Smart Alec's and the service is quick. As far as taste goes, I'd say Alec's is average. I don't think this place is as healthy as they try to advertise, but it isn't too greasy.

Their burgers are okay. I'm not vegetarian, but the big A burger isn't bad.

I think my friends overrate this place. I'll come here if I'm hungry enough, but I haven't identified any hit items on their menu yet. The last time I had a hummus sandwich which was really big, but I doubt I'd get it again unless I have an unusual craving for a s-ton of hummus.

It's been 4 years since I was a student at Cal...but eating here this past wknd brought back TONS of memories of being a student there.  I used to love Smart Alec's for their amazing salads, and it is jst as good now as it was then.

I brought my BF around Telegraph because he's never been, and we decided to have lunch here b/c I have such fond memories of it.  I ordered a superior chef salad with chicken...which was HUGE!  My BF ordered a avodcado burger combo, but we ended up just sharing my salad and eating some garlic fries, and saving the entire burger for later.  The salad was more than enough.  If you are a salad lover you will really love it here...the ingredients are so fresh, the serving size is fantastic, and they have the besssttttttt poppy seed salad dressing (highly recommended!).  Their fries are also "air-baked," which are supposed to have only 9 grams of fat (in a large) as compared to b/w 25-33 grams of fat in fast food fries.  I'm obsessed with fries so any excuse is good to me :)

I really wish they had a place like this around where I live.  It would be a weekly fixture in my life.

Did you know Smart Alec's gives you free fries if you get an A on your exam? Well, I didn't until my friend told me about it today, so all you smart alecs (har har har), flash your grades for free fries!

4 stars for that offer and the soups only. I am not a big fan of their other items on the menu. Burgers and sandwiches are decent, salads are pretty filling, but meh. If I want a burger, I'll definitely go elsewhere. The soups, though, are very good. My favorite is the potato leek. Surprisingly, a bowl with your choice of wheat or cornbread can  fill you up for only $3 and some odd cents.

And watch out, they take garlic fries quite literally. Plop on the garlic and you have garlic fries, so don't expect some kind of garlic-y seasoning.

This was my go to spot for quick, cheap, and somewhat healthy food back in my college days. In all honesty I don't find their burgers anything too special. Their regular cheeseburger taste like cardboard to me and their chicken burger is often dry and they never give enough basil sauce for it.

However! I love their fries! They give you about four potatoes worth for the medium bag it seems! Plus they are not greasy and the air baking technique makes the fries crunchy and crispy. Their soups are also very good as well. I feel in love with potato leek soup here.

If you're a Berkeley student you owe it to yourself to give their fries and soups a go. The burgers...well I'm not much of a fan but other people are so give them a try too.

I just stopped in here for a veggie burger yesterday while visiting my brother, a Cal employee. I went with the Big A burger, veggie burger and garlic fries. It was not the best veggie burger I've ever had, but it was decent. The garlic fries were solid. Much like the Berkeley population, they were baked, and are much healthier than the average fry.

All in all a pretty nice place. Check out a full review on my blog.

One of the best things about Smart Alec's is that their  food is made very quickly (this may also be a bad thing if you want quality put into your food). They have a great turkey sandwich with cranberry mayo that makes me wish it was Thanksgiving every time i eat it.

Their salads are very big but i wouldn't say that they are that great. Also the fries do not last very long so they probably won't be good by the time you finish your meal. You could go for the garlic fries which have a longer shelf life, but may be over powering because you get chunks of garlic. If you're in the mood for a burger i would it make a chicken sandwich instead, i think they taste better.

Overall this place is really close to campus, priced well, gives you large portions, and the food is made quickly. However you must bring cash and you may not be happy with everything you get.

As a Cal student, this was my favorite restaurant on Telegraph.

Why? Because it's fast, cheap, and good eats!

Combo of a great sandwich + salad or soup with your choice of cornbread or whole wheat slice for something under $8.

I'm pretty sure I've gone through 20+ Smart Alec's cards already and have ventured their entire menu in the last many years, so here's a recap of my favorites:

--Sandwiches/Burgers--
1) Turkey + Cranberry Mayo: Sweet and savory all in one!
2) Tofu + Avocado: Always so heart-warming and wholesome, and the healthiest of their selections.
3) Eggplant + Basil Pesto + Cheese: grilled wonderfully, and always hits the spot when you want a hearty sandwich!!!
4) Big B Burger with Avocado: this is really fulfilling and hearty, too!

--Soups--
1) Potato Leeks
2) Corn Chowder
3) Chili

--Salads--
I always enjoy their cesar, but their honey mustard dressing is spectacular.

--Other things--
The fries are AMAZING. Get the garlic fries and that special thousand-island influence dip of theirs and you're good to go!

Try ordering a bowl of their chili + their fries separately ...mm...

Rest assure you will be well satiated and won't feel guilty at all!

This place is the very definition of dirt cheap. It's so cheap, it's filthy cheap. Five of us hungry wanderers needed sustenance & Smart Alec's was an inviting, airy spot that beckoned to us from across the street (we were shopping at Bear Basic.)

We ordered a variety of things: vegetable soup, a beef burger, a veggie burger, a green salad and i had the sesame chicken salad ($7). The salads were big enough for 2-3 meals, comes with a huge slab of cornbread & tastes healthy & filling. And just to make sure our meal wasn't too healthy (god forbid), we shared an order of garlic fries.

Total: $35 (super sized portions for next-to-nothing.)

Bring cash or be prepared to withdraw some money from the BofA ATM across the street because they do not accept credit/debit cards.

Ah, how I love Smart Alecs. Cheap, close by, and very generous portions.

My favorite thing to get there is the 1/2 sandwich, 1/2 soup combo. For just around $7, its seriously the best deal near campus for the taste:price ratio. I always get the eggplant melt (no onions) because its just so freakin good. The "special sauce" is really just caesar dressing and mixes very well with the melting cheese and pesto spread that goes along with it. Every soup I've ever had there has been phenomenal... probably like the vegetable or potato leek the best. OH, and it comes with a piece of cornbread that could be a meal all itself? Seriously, this place rules.

Plus, the garlic fries are a STEAL for $1.55 for a medium (which is bigger than a large at any other fast food place).

Minus one star for being cash only, otherwise, perfect.

I've been a few times, and my favorite thing to get is the sandwich/soup combo. For $6.21 without tax (I believe), you get half a sandwich, a bowl of soup, and a slice of bread.

For sandwiches, I like the roasted turkey breast and grilled chicken. They're plain, with a basic dressing, lettuce, wheat bread, tomato (I think?), and meat recipe, but they go down easy and taste fresh.

For soups, I like the corn chowder a lot, but the vegetable soup is decent, too. You get a generous portion no matter what kind you get, and it goes well with a sandwich.

For the extra piece of bread, you can get either cornbread or wheat bread. The cornbread is a large cube-ish chunk with a crumbly consistency, while the wheat is basically a full-slice of the sandwich bread. The cornbread is tastier, but I would bet that it's less healthy. The wheat bread is a little plain on its own, but dipping it in the soup helps.

There are also the hamburgers and fries. I haven't had either in a while, but from what I remember, the fries are the standout of the two. The burger is solid and a little healthier than your typical one. The fries are air-baked and also seem healthier than usual french fries. I wasn't a big fan of the  fries with garlic because the garlic was just put on top of the fries, not mixed in well, and it was also a little too strong for me. The pricing for a burger/fries combo is about the same as the sandwich/soup, I think, and it's still a satisfactory amount.

Service is quick and efficient. You line up at the counter, order, and pay (cash only), then get a receipt with an order number on it. After that you can get a table and utensils and free water and wait for them to call your number when your food is ready, which usually takes less than four minutes.

As an aside, to use the restroom, you need to ask the cashier after you order to unlock the bathroom door with their electronic buzzing system, and then by the time you walk to the restroom, which is in the back corner, it should be opened for you.

There are no real problems with Smart Alec's. It's true that some of their food offerings are less appealing than others, but you get a tasty, fairly healthy, and filling meal for a good price regardless of what you choose.

Although I am extremely dubious as to the veracity of the "100% Fresh Beef" claim, this place and Bongo Burger are the only two burger places I've been to on southside, and I liked it better here. Because it was cheaper.

Smart Alec's was one of the first places I that caught my eye when I attended Berkeley. For some reason though, I never got around to stepping in. Perhaps it was the intimidating line of people or the intoxicating smell of french fries that caused me to stay far, far away.

Things changed once my close friend started working there though. From the very first moment my teeth sank into the oversized-soft-yet surprisingly-dense cornbread, I knew it was love at first bite. This affair continued throughout my two years there and I still dream about the cornbread. Sure, I've tried their famous air-baked fries and their eggplant melt sandwich and their salads but let me tell you... nothing, I mean nothing (at least in my opinion compares to the cornbread here). There were literally days that I just purely lived off the cornbread. Sure, it wasn't the healthiest of choices but it did the trick -- two pieces of cornbread a day was all I need to fuel my brain.

I love this cornbread so much that when I went up a month ago to help my sister move-in to Berkeley (yay another Cal Bear!), I insisted that our first stop before anything was to stop by Smart Alecs. Of course, parking is a disaster so I literally just jumped out of the car and told my mom to circle around the block and pick me up. I jumped back into the car with two gorgeous servings of cornbread and started eating away. My sister, of course, had been dying to try these famous treats and let's just say it was also... love at first bite!

Since I pass by this place twice a day, it was a matter of time before I finally tried it.

I got the chicken sandwich with a side of garlic fries. The chicken sandwich wasn't that great. It lacked flavor, though the chicken itself was pretty moist. But the garlic fries however- WOW. I cannot believe that these aren't fried. Who needs regular fries if you can "air bake" them? (Whatever that means...)

The fries are definitely drier than your regular fried version, but who cares when you feel so much better about yourself for being "healthy"? My friend thought that the garlic topping was too strong, which is understandable since the garlic tastes just barely cooked, but since I'm a garlic fiend, I loved it. Delicious!

Still, the sandwich was just average, and considering the other cheaper options on Telegraph, I don't know how often I'll be going here.

It's good. It's very good, but only if you order the right things and love garlic. The burgers are fairly generic; tasty, but with nothing special. However their salads are massive, and their sandwiches let them use their unique health food alternatives more wisely than in a regular burger.

Then there are garlic fries. The fries themselves taste good, but with an extra large kick of garlic their oven baked fries are delicious.

To do it right: $7

This place is Luke Wilson in Idiocracy: perfectly average.

Given it's close location to my place of employ, I am here on the order of monthly.  A guacamole grilled chicken sandwich and garlic fries runs a bit under $8, is filling, and not bad, but not good either.  Another reviewer described the food here as "unmemorable," and that is perhaps the perfect word.

The one out-of-the-ordinary thing that they do have here is the garlic fries.  These are essentially fries with a tablespoon of nearly raw garlic mixed with a bit of oil and herbs of some kind.  If you're into hardcore garlic like me, you'll appreciate them, otherwise pass.

Also not, they accept CASH ONLY, so be prepared for this occasionally annoying Berkeleyism.

Final Say: Stupendously OK.

I used to eat here pretty much every other day with my roommates, so I've tried most of what they have to offer.  We'd trade off between Chipotle and Smart Alec's, trying to cleanse our bodies of all the saturated fat from Chipotle by opting for a guilt-free lunch the next day at Smart Alec's.

Let's break it down now, shall we?

Salads:  They're OK at best, so if you're looking for a good salad I'd suggest you go a couple of blocks down Telegraph to Intermezzo, which I guess is now called Matina.

Sandwiches:  I'd really only suggest the chicken sandwich, the others are a bit bland and tasteless.  The sandwiches are also a bit pricey for what they are.

Soups:  Stick with the corn chowder.  I'm not sure how a vegan soup can be so creamy, and I've always been afraid to ask.

Now, to the good stuff:  The burgers aren't bad and come out pretty quickly.  I used to be a hardcore carnivore, but I've been trying to change my eating habits so that I can live past the age of 40, and the veggie burger here isn't bad either.  The air-baked fries are usually a hit or miss.  They taste pretty amazing for non-fried fries (is there such a thing?) when they're freshly made, but when they've cooled, they take on kind of a cardboard-like consistency :(.

Still, I'm a huge potato addict, so I used to make a stop at Smart Alec's before heading back to my apartment from campus just for hot air-baked fries + Smart Alec's "special sauce" (which I think is really just a variation of Thousand Island like all of California's burger joints' "special sauces").

I was craving a burger and I stumbled upon this place because people were ordering here like crazy. I ordered their burger and it was pretty much flavorless. Where was the beef flavor unless I ordered a vegan patty by accident which I didn't. I even had vegan burgers better than this. The fries were tasteless and bland. I did everything I can to make the burger better but seriously, it was bad. My friend didn't like his food either which was an eggplant sandwich. It was just bad with no flavor, so sauce and greasy. He let me take a bite and I wanted to spit it out. His chili was horrible as well. It tasted like it came from a can...nothing special about this place other than it might be healthy but it does not taste good at all.

My fiancé and I were in town last weekend for a concert at the Greek, and we needed something to eat before the show. We walked to this downtown area, saw Smart Alec's on the corner, pulled up the iPhone Yelp app, and decided to give it a try.

I ordered a sesame tofu salad (served on romaine lettuce with LOTS of cucumber and crispy noodles) with the dressing on the side and a piece of cornbread that came with it.

This was the salad that never ended! I kept eating and eating, and it seemed like the salad got even bigger. I don't get it. I was definitely full after eating for 20 min., and it looked like I hadn't even touched it. See picture: http://www.yelp.com/bi...

My fiancé ordered garlic fries (the ones I tried sans garlic were pretty good) and a gourmet burger with BBQ sauce. He seemed to like it.

Overall, a good place for a pre-concert stop, even though I felt kinda old there in this college town.

Great place for quick food that's pretty good.  It's not the most amazing sandwiches or burgers, but I'm always more than satisfied.

And I love the service here.  Even if there's a line it goes pretty quick and they very, very rarely ever get any of my order wrong even with special requests.

The chicken burger is usually what I get and the fries are always good and you feel better knowing they're baked, not fried.  If you get the garlic fries (which are great), prepare for a personal lockdown of about 16 hours without being around other people or you are going to knock them out with the garlic breath.  The soups are pretty good, too.  I guess my biggest positive is they are consistent and I like consistent places on a weekly lunch routine.

All the staff gets the job done, too.  They work hard without fuss and I appreciate that at any place I go.  If you're going to do a job, do it well and I think Smart Alec's does that.  4 stars from me.

I have to give kudos to Smart Alec's for making the Big A burger their veggie burger

(lol my roommate sometimes forgot that the Big A burger was a veggie patty and would come home saying "OH GOD NOOO!!! its not meat! bleh!")

but the veggie patty isn't the greatest....it has a sort of weird after taste that obviously reminds you that you are NOT eating meat.

The other sandwiches are pretty good and the soups are decent, my favorite sandwiches are the eggplant melt and the marinated tofu.

This place has the most amazing corn chowder soup I've ever had. I'm vegan and one of my favorite foods used to be clam chowder soup, and their corn chowder does a mighty fine job of satisfying my nostalgia for it. I like both their regular and their garlic fries, the tofu sandwich, their garden salad, and their veggie burgers. Only complaint is that they don't serve organic ketchup. Their smoothies are on the sweet side and are more like slushies than anything else.
It' also be awesome if they had compostable forks and such (although they have silverware, but there's only so much).

Please don't tell me what I ate was a healthier choice because I won't believe you.  The burger and garlic fries combination (Big B Combo) I had was excellent.

The burger is served open faced with a slathering of dressing on a whole wheat bun.  Fresh, crispy leaf lettuce, ripe tomatoes, a little red onion and pickle chips are stacked on the top half of the bun which sat below the patty half.  The minced garlic for the garlic fries is just scooped on top of the fries, and it's up to you to mix it in well with your fries (http://static.px.yelp....).

Although I prefer my garlic fries to be all tossed around this small obstacle was no problem.  I eventually came up with a system to put as much garlic as I wanted onto each fry.  I appreciate that there is no extra charge for the garlic.  I would not have known that the fries were air-baked because they actually tasted better than some of the deep fried spuds I've had at other restaurants.

The burger was mildly seasoned and very juicy with a really nice pink color in the center and great beef taste.  The bun was a bit crusty near the edges so I just tore off parts of it and discarded it.  I know.  I hate wasting food too.  I should have wrapped it all up and taken it outside to feed the birds, but with my luck the Berkeley cops would have probably stopped and ticketed me.  That's another story.

I liked Smart Alec's, and I will be back.

I had the sesame tofu salad and split it with my cousin because it was so huge.

It was good overall, except for the tofu which was way, way too salty. Both of us ended up eating everything but the tofu.

The cornbread was alright, not as great as some people here are saying, but then again I'm not the biggest fan of cornbread. It's alright!

"Meh."
Campus food stop.
I've been here at least 4 times already and all 4 times I order what amounts to be just, "meh." I'm nice though and I give them the benefit of the doubt. I always, and still do, tell myself that I just ordered the wrong thing. I just ordered the wrong burger, the wrong fries, the wrong sandwich, or the wrong salad. Next time will be better. But heck no. This place is just "meh."

What more is there to say really?

We visited Smart Alec's yesterday with some friends we introduced to the Berkeley area.  I was dreaming of poppy seed dressing over mixed greens and half a hummus sandwich, which I promptly devoured shortly after receiving my tray of goodness.  The hummus is a simple sandwich but packed full of flavor and has a great crunch from the cucumbers. The combo is decently priced and we shared a large order of garlic fries.  They definitely didn't skimp on the garlic. We had to high tail it back to the car for some gum before finishing our tour.

Not sure why they offer another piece of bread or cornbread with the 1/2 salad since I am already eating the sandwich.  Definitely don't need all that bread.

I sure don't feel smarter after eating here, but I'm satisfied with their offerings. As a carnivore, I often go for the avocado burger with garlic fries (for some extra flavor). Their secret sauce isn't bad either. My one complaint with their burgers is that they tend to be fairly soggy, almost as if everything melts in your mouth. While some may find this tantalizing, I'd prefer to chew my food. The garlic fries are epic, so make sure you bring gum or breath mints, even though you'll still be burping and tasting garlic for a few hours. Not a bad choice if you're in the healthy market, as they also have a wide variety of salads, soups, and corn/wheat bread!

Haha. Smart Alec's. What a great name.

Anyway, my friend & I decided to stop by here because one of the cute girls we met at a shop recommended it to us. We were really hesitant about trying the place because we weren't really feelin' the gourmet burgers & salads.. But after debating it & comparing other options, we decided to try it.

We both ended up getting a Big B combo with Garlic Fries. Service was hella quick for such a rush hour, too. Wow. Tell me why that burger got us full for the rest of the day! I was definitely satisfied with what I ordered. I didn't really recognize the "special sauce" the menu claims to offer & ended up having to add extra condiments for flavor. I seriously didn't want my burger to end, but for some reason, after my last bite, it was like I ate the perfect amount. Couldn't even finish the garlic fries, haha. Stuffed. My friend hates pickles, too, but she loved the ones they had here. Weird.

But this place was packed! Hella folks were getting huge salads that looked crazy. Definitely worth a stop.

I can't believe the horrible reviews this place gets.  When I was living in Berk I LOVED this place.  huge windwos make for excellent peopel watching and the food is tastariffic.  Highly recomended with any order is the garlic mayo.  It's like you put an entire garlic clove in your mouth.  Good LORD, I stank for days, but totally worth it.

Solid student food.  tasty.  man.. I miss living in the Bay...

"Let's go to Smart Alec's".

Whenever I hear these words, my mind skims over the menu: okay sandwiches, okay salads, okay soups, okay smoothies, and oooh, their delicious cornbread.

"Y-y-yeah, let's go to Smart Alec's!"

Just got back from this place, and I have some mixed feelings.

I ordered a the Big B with garlic fries, despite the reviews saying it's just a lump of garlic stuff on top, since it's hard for me to turn down garlic anything. Turns out everyone was right, it's not worth getting garlic on the fries. The fries were surprisingly good though, once you got past the lump of garlic on top, and I'm finding it a little hard to believe they weren't fried, but I guess I'll have to take their word for it (or see if I can catch them taking some out of the oven for proof).

Now, the burger. I generally eat mine naked (with the exception of cheese, or maybe specialty toppings if it's that kind of place), so I asked for the lettuce/tomato/onions/dressing on the side,  but the burger was served to me with all of that on it already. I did eat it that way, since I wanted to sit down and eat already, and it was good, but I don't appreciate being served food a different way than I asked for it, especially when it was clear the person that took my order heard me.

Overall: good fries, decent burger, but if I was craving McDonald's (which I do sometimes, but I haven't given in yet!) I wouldn't use this as a sub.

The main reason I'm giving this three stars instead of two is that it's so incredibly cheap. The food is definitely not "good." But getting an "A" burger and fries here is satisfying in a way that you only really understand if you're vegan and haven't had a burger-and-fries meal for twelve years. The smoothies, which are also vegan, are pretty tasty as well. It would be nice if they used fresh garlic, though, the stuff that comes on the garlic fries tastes like the pre-minced stuff from a jar. Yech.

i have yet to be competely blown away by smart alec's.

yes, it is convient.

yes, it is fairly decently priced.

yes, it is decent food.

but not amazing. garlic fries are a decent fall back, salads  are pretty solid. it's not perfect, there will almost always be a better alternative, but if youre just looking for something... just something, then here we go.

First timer at this place. I was surprised by their cheap prices and it's definitely filling. Also my first time making a review for yelp... so here it goes!!

SERVICE & ATMOSPHERE: Good friendly service as expected, super fast service got my food in less than 5 min. Spacy place a lot of places to sit and eat.

MY ORDER: I got the #1 combo Big A Burger w/ Garlic Fries & Coke
I had no idea I accidentally ordered a veggie burger, but after taking my first bite I had no regrets ordering it, it was so good I might even go vegetarian because of this veggie burger. Their fries was eehhhhhhh whatever.. nothing special but pretty good still. I thought their garlic fries was gonna be good but all I got was a littly lump of minced garlic on the side.

The good thing about all the food here is that it's supposedly really healthy. I'm definitely coming back here to try out all their other stuff. Their name got the "A+" in it but I'm gonna give it an A-

After feeling unsatisfied with yesterday's Smokehouse chicken burger, the sixteen extra cents at Smart Alec's was well spent: freshness, avocado, real jack cheese, full-leaf lettuce, onions, tomato, on a whole wheat bun (it's surprisingly flavorful). It's not amazing but it's certainly a Yum!
