6 reviews for Slauson Indoor Swap Meet
One Saturday morning two very freaked out girls (yes, one being me) needed some pieces of clothing embroidered for an event happening in a couple of hours. I had tried going to three other places before coming here and everyone said that they couldn't do it because i didn't give them enough time. The swap meet was pretty much our last hope. We went up to the embroidery shop and begged them if they could do a rush job even though they had other orders to work on. They saw the how desperate girls were and very kindly embroidered the 5 shorts and ties within 30 minutes. They also didn't charge me extra for the rush order. Since then I have gone back several times to get various items embroidered and i have always been happy with the quality. They charge $1 per letter up to i believe 1.5 inch letters. I don't know their other pricing but they are really fair.
Besides that wonderful booth you can also find anything in this swap meet. You can get shoes of EVERY kind, sweatshirts, ties, suits, music, manicures, pedicures, art, hair care, jewelry, etc. More or less if you can think of it, they have it. You can haggle with most places if you pay in cash so if you ever need something quick or have a couple hours to blow and you are in the area check it out!

I LOVE the Slauson Swapmeet! Been coming here for years.
These are some of the random items I've bought @the swapmeet: Fedoras, Women's High Top Nikes, 24K gold name-plate necklace (I recommend LA Gold - 4th Entrance on the farthest right), Sandals, Socks, Pro Club shirts, etc.
This place has EVERYTHING. for instance, the other day, I was looking for 2 specific items for my trip to Coachella - a summer fedora and cute sandals. I found both for $30.
FYI - it's in S.Central, but I do not fear for my life when I go down there, like some yelpers have previously stated.
I wish I had a Jheri Curl...seriously.
Ok, so I've been on hiatus from work for about a month and a half now. And in that time, I've decided to re-acquaintance myself with the city. Los Angeles, Lost Angels, Lust Anjealous...whatever you want to call it. I've been everywhere and anywhere. Last week I decided to take a trip to South Los Angeles.
Home to the Slauson Indoor Swap Meet.
What better way to get some LA-type urban black culture and cheaply priced goods all under one roof. So, I called my friend up and said, "Get ready, we're going to Slauson Blvd." The last time either one of us had been to SISM was more than a decade ago when we were both kids, involved in grafitti and traveling the city by bus.
Well, let me tell you, nothing has changed. SISM is just like we left it back in the mid 90's. You can still find your knock off Nike, Adidas, New Balance, Converse and Vans. Only now, you can find, Christian Dior, Louis Vuitton and D & G knockoffs as well. There are booths that sell jewelry, tshirts, socks, underwear, track suits, cheap suits and ties, Afro-Centric memoribilia, car stereo stuff, Dickies in every imaginable color, jeans, etc. Just everything to get your South Los Angeles ass ready for the weekend.
One of my favorite places was when we first walked in. It was a black hair care product booth that had about 3001 different products for black hair. My friend who came with me is black, so we stopped there so he could pick up a palm brush...$1.99. Anyways, the different bottles and containers had all these fantastic names and labels and logo's and design's that made me think of years past. If only I had had that J-Curl.
What I was able to find AND buy were t-shirts. I'm a solid color t-shirt wearer and this place was a goldmine for that. All sorts of different colors, every size available and at dirt cheap prices. And the t-shirts are good quality. This place is also pretty good for socks and underwear...again, dirt cheap prices.
All in all, it was a good experience and I will definitely be going back...need to get some odd colored Dickies and have them hemmed into shorts.
Hell, maybe I'll even get some activator.
***Additional info:
Ya know, I didn't experience the parking problems that the reviewer before me did...but then again, I went on a weekday.
It is true, however, that most of the booth owners are pricks. Not all of them...but most of them. They seem to be pissed off for whatever reason.
As far as the area is concerned...yeah, it's a bad area, but everyone I came in contact with, like other shoppers, were friendly and courteous. People are just there to shop. I never once "feared" for my life.
Need $2 hair grease? How about $15 flat iron? 24K super gold hoop earrings? Nike cortez (in an assorment of colors)? Snazy strreeetttch spandex tops or bottoms? toe socks? pleather shoes, belts, coats, tops, pants? You name it and Slauson Swapmeet sells the imitation of it!!! This establishment can be considered a historic landmark of South Central L.A. It offers the poor folk, the bling-bling, shoe, nail and jewelry addict a plethora of items to chose from. I love this place because I can find cute shoes that I'll probably only wear twice for $10, stock up on muscle shirts, lipliners, and really the possibilities are endless.
I took two stars off because:
- I HATE HATE the parking lot, it's always packed!
-No customer service whatsoever (they don't need it I suppose)
-Food sucks
-I can't help but fear for my life at times. I've been coming to this swapmeet since I was a young child and I've always witnessed some type of altercation between the workers or shoppers. Disputes, fights, and tension always make me uneasy. Call it PTSD, or call it paranoia, either way, i'm positive there is a diagnosable disorder (quite possibly more than one) out there for me.
Advice:
DO NOT F$%K with the staff or post owners. They are known to protect themselves and their goods by any means necessary. It was one of the only places in South Central that was not touched during the L.A. Riots. Owners were on the roof with shotguns.
Slauson Swap Meet. I love it! You can find just about anything here for cheap. You can find CDs, car accessories, kicks, clothes, and just about anything here. I think it's funny though, it's run by Asians and being Asian myself, sometimes other patrons have gone up to me to ask how much something is to only kindly turn them away and say I don't own the particular shop I was in at the moment. You can also somewhat bargain here compared to the mall. Cash is your bargaining power, more cash you carry, the better bargaining power you have. It's been a while since I've shopped here, maybe I should make another trip.
