Today was the culmination of a project I've been working on with Ameriprise Financial Services since the first of the year. Intent was both a perk/mea culpa for high-end clients whose investments tanked last year (Like mine didn't?) and an opportunity to expand my speaking circuit and  personal training business.
Our  "Health is Wealth" (What better focus? Damn the market!) seminar needed a centrally located, cost effective venue. But I didn't book it, Ameriprise did.
The entrance to Skylinks course is unmarked. There must be a secret code word to get in. I Map-Quested.  I Goggle-Earthed.  I drove right by it.  So did our guests. I suspect many, in spite of an e-blast last night to clarify the entrance (I wasn't made privy.), just gave up and went home.  I would've.  We started late.  Minus one star.
This was an interactive, fitness workshop.  Prep-staff did not configure banquet room to specifications. Three large round tables set up with two pitchers of ice water on each and no glasses. I moved tables and chairs. Worked up a sweat.  Had to re-do my hair and make-up.  Might have been Ameriprise's snafu.  Benefit of the doubt. Almost lost a star for my unplanned primp time but benevolent me says, stars intact.
Staff was pleasant, attentive and I'm sure relieved that we really didn't need them. Stars intact. However, mid session, cigarette smoke wafted into the banquet room from, I think the kitchen. Totally unacceptable! Latrines were somewhat clean but smelled like summer camp. Minus two stars.
This place is just OK. I might, if I personally booked it, hold another event here.  Nah, who the hell am I kidding? Skylinks, you're fired!

Sorry Jim S (reviewer below), but I cannot agree less.  Let's start with the fact that indeed the course layout is nice, and can be challenging.  To whatever degree my rant is qualified, I am a single digit handicapper and play A LOT of golf (some competitions) all over L.A.  I played from the 6909 tips and you gotta bomb the ball off the tee on a number of holes, or par is not gonna happen.  And on the shorter holes, you need to temper that aggression by laying up.  So the course has personality.  OK, that out of the way...

figuring I'd move away from the 6 or 7 public LA courses I play all the time (for about $30), I thought I'd treat myself to a new experience at twice the price ($60).  To my utter horror as I step up to the first tee, we are indeed (Jim S.) A FIVESOME!  On a weekend?!  At noon!  OMG we might not finish.

I never spent so much time with my ass on the grass.  Hit.  Walk to ball.  Wait 10 min.  Hit.  Walk to ball.  Wait 10 min.  Total time to complete the round 5 hours and 50 minutes.  Completely and utterly unacceptable for a $60 track.  I can do better than that at Rancho in West LA at noon for half the price.   The group in front of us - a fivesome.  The group in front of them - a fivesome.   The group behind us... a threesome.  Poor lads.

Problem #2.  Greens.  There seems to be no effort certainly on the part of players, much less the management, to keep the greens in good condition.  They certainly rolled nicely... as long as you avoided the hundred of pits along the way.  No one... NO ONE fixes their ball marks.   In my group, no one other than myslef fixed their marks.  WTF?  Who do you really think is going to do that for you?  I mean, you bend down to mark your ball.  You bend down to pick it up... clean it... put it back.   CLEAN UP YOUR MESS!  Not once did i have a clean look at the hole.

Lastly, and somewhat insignificant but worth a mention, American Golf - put up a goddamn sign.  Is it that hard?  I was rushing to make my time and flying by i just got lucky that it looked like it could be the golf course parking lot.  But if there is a sign there, it's small and well hidden.

American Golf - If you really need to get $280 out of every group that goes out, jack it up to $70 and keep it to four.  I'd much rather pay that and have the expected experience of a nice layout, than what you are currently offering.

I probably won't be back unless playing on a weekday with a guarantee that there are NO FIVESOMES on the course that day.

played again yesterday.  still a 4 star place, best in Long Beach.  I've yet to find a muni course in all of LA that's better than this place!

first, let me say that i don't play golf. so i can't really say anythinig about that aspect. but i did use their services for our wedding.
i really wanna give them a good review but, man.... we had so much problems! when we were booking them, they were promising us a lot of things! i was very happy thinking that they do really wanna help us and take care of us. but then after i signed the contract, i couldn't even freakin talk to anyone who can help me prepare for our wedding! and few days (like a week) before the wedding, they tell me that there has to be changes made regarding the use of place! are you freaking kidding me?! seriously?!?! and on the wedding day itself, they weren't very accomodating and they were actually mean to us and even to our guests. so embarrassing.

i'm giving them 2 stars because the food is actually good and they gave me a good price for it. and also for the fountain. it's pretty for the pictorials.

This review isn't much about golfing itself, just the wedding venue aspect.  The pictures for this place look lovely, with the rocks and the waterfall and such, the signature place to be, but unfortunately, don't look much further, because that is the only place I found appealing about this wedding venue.

The banquet room that was showed to me was very small, obviously not able to accommodate all my guests, even though they advertise that it could...thing is, they would have to seat some of the guests outside...so in essence, separating people from the party.

The GREAT thing about this place is that it was the most affordable place we found...complete with kids meals!

over priced for what the course is. It's kind of flat and not a fan of having a layup hole on the first hole. I do have a soft spot for this course as a ripped off 3 birdies and an eagle on the first 5 holes of the back nine. Must have been that great chicken sandwich I had at the turn.

I'll say it with pride...I drove to the green on the first hole. You must hit a high draw. But you must hit the green, anywhere else around the green and you won't make birdie.

Skylinks was a cute affordable muni, then came the long period of time when the course was getting a makeover. Now the course cost twice as much to play. It's a lot nicer course now with all the changes. Redid the greens, placed new bunkers, changed a few landing areas. But really, it almost plays the same as before.

Before, it was impossible to get a tee time here because everyone played here and it was so busy. Now, one doesn't have to wait too long. One great thing about Skylinks is the lighted range, which closes at 9pm. I think green fees with cart ranges at around $40 - $60. It's less for twilight of course. fun course, give it a try when Lakewood is busy.

This course was renovated 2 or 3 years ago and I just got to play it last week. This place had a face lift, not just adding a bunker here and there, adding some water, adding trees, and mounded putting surface but,  turned the whole course upside down.

Sorry to report that I wasn't impressed. The greens were a bit tougher.  Overall the course was the same short and flat.

More expensive then any other course (public course in Long Beach)

Impossible pin placements at times (that's just lack of experience by the green keeper) or had a bad night.

Try to play the other courses in Long Beach. This one is OK if the others are too busy.

like the other reviews, it is much pricier than before but i do like the new layout...the greens are much faster and difficult to read and the added bunkers are a great addition to the layout of the course. overall, the course is a challenging track but at its current rates, it might be worth driving out to the inland empire and play a course like oak valley or empire lakes.
