I take a moment to compose myself as the fact a straight man who I sincerely like just offered to take me to a "tulip festival."  Here I was under the impression things like this needed to begged and pleaded for a man to attend and only after you have been dating for a min. of six months.....

*******

I never knew a Tulip Festival existed in Washington and Tulips are one of my favorite flowers!  Sure there is a lot of traffic but it is soooo gorgeous that is worth it!  You are going to a tulip festival, so pop the sunroof, and stop and smell the flowers!  The town is filled with cute shops, old churches, and B&B's.  It's a great romantic afternoon outing!  I completely recommend it !  Plus the day we went was the best weather I have seen since moving to Seattle!

Every couple years I head up to the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival to check out the tulips in full bloom and over the years I've learned a few things:

1. Do NOT go on a weekend traffic is a nightmare, do like I do and play hooky one weekday and go check them out.

2. Go towards the beginning of the festival so you can see the tulips and daffodils in the fields not just dirt.

3. Be sure to pick up a map at one of the information booths this way you'll know what's blooming where.

4. If it's been raining wear shoes you don't care about because there is a 99% chance they will get muddy while you are tip toeing through the tulips.

5. If you have a digital camera make sure the battery is fully changed and the memory card is empty.

Also if you go during the week sometimes you don't have to pay to park at the fields for just at Roozengaarde and Tulip Town if you choose to go there.  If you've never been start coughing and take tomorrow off to go check it out.

Blooming tulips oh my!!!  A true NW Spring time fav, everyone must make the trip north and take the time to smell the roses...I mean look at the tulips.  But PLEASE don't tiptoe through them!!

Plenty of festival guides are offered for free at many local restaurants, gas stations and such in the Mount Vernon, Conway, and La Connor towns make up the triangle are of the fields.  A month long event that keeps the fields full of blooming examples of gardening expertise.  Most farms have a small entry fee, some fields are free to walk about, but lack some of the local flare of an actual garden area.  Field hands  ask that you to stay out of the rows between the tulips.

A fine Spring tradition to share with friends and or family!!

Flowers are pretty.

However, being as that the Tulip Festival is the ONLY free thing to do within an 800 mile radius, I'm not kidding when I tell you that EVERY SINGLE PERSON on EARTH is driving around there, gawking out their window at the roadside displays as passers-through sit behind them in their cars, fuming.

This thoroughfare is the ONLY non-ferry connection between the actual world and Whidbey Island, which (as unfortunate as it is) SOME of us ACTUALLY need to get to.

Until Skagit Valley finishes their detour highway project (we're going on six years of construction now), the Festival will continue to be one of those things you would LOVE to see, but will get just as much non-traffic-nightmare joy from if you simply click through web photos of the event.

It's a tulip.  Or, you know, a few of them.

During the month of April is a wonderful Festival with the blooming of tulips.  There are also daffodils and purple iris during other times of the year.  From what I gather, the farmer actually wants the bulbs to export, that is prize for them not the flowers.  But the flowering fields are awesome with the colors of red, fushia, pink, yellow and oranges then the hybrids of multicolored flowers.   There are roadside stand everywhere selling blooms, usually around $4.50 for a bunch.  Amazing the different colors, the different sizes and the multi color variations.

You pay for parking on some of the larger fields, they offer porta potties and some of the smaller fields, you just pull off the side of the road and enjoy.

The tulips are absolutely gorgeous!
Try to go on a weekday to avoid the madness!
Also before you go, check out the "bloom map" on the tulip festival website.  It will show you what is in bloom.  The tulips for this year haven't started blooming yet.  We will be watching the map and the weather for a good day to go.
We go every year and love it.  On the way home we eat at the Rhododendron Cafe.
