Review from E'stormae S.
Hawthorne, CA
I remember when this park was opened in 1976. At that time, It was called Marriott's Great America (as in the Marriott hotel). I've had probably 4 seasons passes or more. My last one being almost ten years ago. Lots of good memories from this pricey park.
You've got to remember to eat a good meal right before coming to the park. Also, pack a cooler full of drinks (LOTS of drinks) sandwiches, chips and sweets. Don't over-pack as you are still going to want to eat the food inside the park anyway. This way it saves you a little money. You'll be hungry when you leave and its nice to have a cold water waiting for you. Some of the things (Like the turkey leg) are actually a pretty good deal. Especially when you share. Share all meals. The portions are kinda big. If you eat too much you won't want to ride the roller coasters. Besides, if you're like me, you'll be hungry in another two hours anyway.
Get off your but and drive down here first thing in morning so that you can get a decent parking spot. Otherwise, come late and you can score a close spot. This is from where other people got tired and left for the day. You might want to check if they still have the season pass parking pass. If they still do, that will save you a lot of money (if you have a season pass). It's worth it if you're able to come a lot. That way, you can come for a half day. They like you coming back. They know you gotta eat!
Funny story:
Back in 93 I was working for Omni grocery store. UFCW union was having a family day here. I was dating this guy for like a month and asked him if he wanted to come with him. I don't know why, but I'd never brought a date here before. I always secretly envied people who came here with dates. I'd feel a pain of emptiness every time I saw people paired up hugging and such while waiting in lines. Now, I had me a date!!
We came early and were surprised there weren't that many people. Granted they had reserved the whole park, but the year before it was a lot busier. We walked into one of the gift shops and a lady asked if we wanted to do a little survey. All we had to do was give our review for the different things we would encounter on our trip there that day such as rides, restaurants and restrooms. For our troubles, we'd get two free tickets and some Great American dollars to buy food/drinks/games. We happily took her up on the offer. This was my first secret shopper job!
I let my date chose the first ride and he chose 'the hay baler'. It was one of those rides that go round and round. Like those you might see at a small fair. I figured that being from rural Kentucky, it appealed to his country nature. That or because the line only had 15 people.
We got on and the ride and it started. After we begin to pick up speed, I heard somebody yell 'YeeHaw'. I snickered, then I heard 'YeeHaw' again and again. I could not see who was actually saying it. I then turned to my date right as I saw him yell "YEEHAW!". It was him! By this time, the others on the ride were turning around to see if they could see who was yelling 'YeeHaw'.
I tried my best not to laugh out loud as my date yelled "YeeHaw" throughout the entire ride. I thought this was the most hilarious joke. I like any man that can make me laugh. I was beginning to REALLY like this guy! Tears had begun to form.
We got off the ride and I snuggled next to him while wiping tears from my eyes. "THAT was freaking hilarious, what you did!", I said. "What did I do that was hilarious?" he asked. It was not a joke.
Although Chicago people don't do yell 'yeehaw' on a ride, Kentucky people do. This made me laugh even harder. So hard that I almost pissed myself. I knew right then and there that I would have to keep him. I ended up marrying that hillbilly. Love of my life.Listed in: Chicagoland

We visited during fright fest after a 3 year hiatus. It's to be expected that six flags will be crowded. And expensive. But it's worth it to ride some roller coasters right? Hm.
Of course I pre purchased our tickets online which saves you time and a couple pennies(oh except for all those other fees). Oh,and I even pre purchased parking($20!?! Is that valet?). But here's my first gripe. When you pre purchase tickets you can skip the ticket both and go straight to the gate. So why is it that when you pre purchase parking that they don't have a couple lanes set aside? Why even offer it as a convenience? Especially when we ended up having to park almost at gurnee mills which is regularly the $10 area.
So first we went to viper. Awesome wooden coaster. But wow, an hour long wait. We got a bit envious when we saw people walking by with the little beeper flash pass things. Saved time, more rides, less lines? Yes please.
The website states that there is a limited number of flash passes available each day. I'm going to have to question that. We waited another hour for a gold flash pass($100 for two). An extremely surly employee finally herded us into a room with a couple of TVs. The whole time yelling with Extreme Rudeness "one person ONE PERSON per party." Mr. People Skills. Geez. So he starts playing this instructional video, and less then 30 seconds in he starts herding everyone through to the other room. Ooook. Guess most of us are tech savvy enough to figure these tomagotchi looking pagers out.
Well with Deja vu(always out of order) and iron wolf(old and painful) closed there's way less coaster to ride. And don't even get me started on the fact that the dark knight is NOT a coaster.
Even with the flash pass we waited an hour to an hour and a half past our reservation time. Which was less than others without it, but I have to wonder. Limited quantity? And no one with a flash pass knew were to wait. We'd go check in and then get told to go to the back of yet another line.
I dunno six flags. Until you step up your game, we're going to Cedar Point. -

I really, really love coasters, so you think this place would be heaven to me. Minor problem: can't get near the d*mn things here because the lines are so freaking long! We've been here 3 times in 13.5 years - twice during fright frest, and once during regular season. Each time the lines for any roller coaster (pick one) are HOURS long. And despite the fact that the lines are horrendous and the parking lot is nearly full, they don't start turning people away (and no, I am not off my rocker - other parks turn people away when they hit a certain capacity).
Unless you feel like standing in line for 30 minutes to spend 13.99 on a grilled chicken sandwich, don't bother trying to eat here. Oh, and if you just want a drink, that's going to take 30 minutes too...because all of the soda / water machines are probably going to be sold out and eat your $3.50 anyway (that is an OBSCENE price for a 20 oz diet soda).
This explains why so many people tailgate in the parking lot - which brings me to the next point - why the heck did it take us 10 minutes to find the exit? Ever thought of having more than one way out of your crappy gating and training your people how to actually direct traffic?
Last, but not least, I shouldn't forget the horrid washrooms (bring hand sanitizer) and the metals detectors/purse check at the entrance. Yikes.
I wish this place had some redeeming quality, something that made me want to come back. Did I mention that I love coasters? They're up there with birds, nice cars, and sushi. But this place is crowded, overpriced, and severely lacking in basic services/amenities. Never again. -

It was my 1st time at Six Flags & this place is so much fun! The lines are absolutely ridiculous tho... gosh! My cousin & I went there about 30 minutes after the park had opened & it was packed already! In about 6 hours, we only got to ride about 4 rides, eat lunch & shop before heading back to his house. It's a theme park so what can you expect but lines & madness?! I still had a blast tho. The Raging Bull is the beeeeest ride there! But I also like the Spiderman as well. Those are the best! Only come here if you have the whole day to waste, have patience & plenty of pocket money. (:

Ten Rules to Enjoy Six Flags and Not Leave Angry
1. Buy your tickets in advance. Find the cheapest coupon code you can. We paid $37 each for 3 people with tax, surcharges, and parking.
2. Don't look at the food or the prices from the vendors. Pack a lunch, head to Chili's, stop at BK...
3. If you fail to follow rule number 2, use your Discover card and save 5% every time. That can add up.
4. Tap water is free. Utilize that, people.
5. Raging Bull is the best roller coaster there as of Fright Fest 2011. Ride it.
6. Speaking of Fright Fest...Monsters don't come out until 4 or 5. Plan accordingly.
7. Don't overdo the dramamine. If you get motion sick or vertigo after the maximum dosage...sit the next coaster out. Trust me on this one.
8. Don't bother asking anyone who works there where stuff is. They have no clue. Use the map.
9. Try to avoid asking for help in any matters (like lockers that don't lock). We waited for 45 minutes and still no one came to help us. Shame on you, six flags.
10. Go with people you like, so that your two star experience feels like a five star experience, just because of your friends. -
Review from Eileen H.
For my 300th review, I have decided to write about a place near and dear to my heart. Six Flags Great America is filled with memories for me, from the year it opened, up until just a few months ago, when I visited there with my daughter.
Six Flags Great America opened in 1976 as Marriott's Great America, and was bought out by Six Flags in 1984. I remember the year they opened, all the residents of Gurnee got free tickets, but we weren't able to use ours because we went to the Philippines (they were only good for a certain block of dates, I think). We did, however, visit the park as soon as we got back. I remember my first time there very vividly even though I was only 4. My brother made me ride the Lobster (which is a spinny type ride) and I recall him laughing his ass off because I was screaming MY ass off.
From the time I was in junior high until the time I moved to California, I think I went to Great America at least 50 times. I think the summer before my freshman year in high school I went about 20 times, thanks to the invention of the season pass. It was the place to hang out and look 'cool', and check out boys lol.
I feel like the rides and the park over all are way better than Great America in Santa Clara. I was so sad to find that they got rid of my all-time favorite roller coaster, Shockwave, and the ride that takes you on a cable with a bird's eye view across the whole park (can't remember the name). They still have a lot of my old favorite rides. The Lobster is STILL there! I took my five year old goddaughter on it and she loved it. I was evidently more of a wimp at her age. I'm so glad the Demon is still there. That coaster is classic and they should never get rid of it. One thing that they recently added is a water park, Hurricane Harbor. I wished they would do that my WHOLE childhood, and it happens when I move away. Oh well.
Going there in June with my own child was a whole different experience, and so fun to see the excitement in her eyes, especially when she rode the two-story carousel. She was so proud because she used to be afraid of merry-go-rounds. I'm happy to see that this amusement park did not go downhill and is still as good, if not better, than it was when I was growing up. -

I have not been back to Six Flags Great America for almost a decade. We couldn't justify the prices for the last 5 years because our son was way too little to ride the majority of the rides there, and the few that were didn't seem to justify the admission cost for 3 as my husband and I would not be able to participate much. I could recall before having a child, a trip to Six Flags easily cost over $100 a person when you added tickets, parking, and food.. It still does.
This summer, we were more than ready. My opinion of Six Flags being too expensive has somewhat changed. We spent $50 a wristband or $4 a ride at various mediocre rides local carnivals and festivals that truly sucked in terms of thrill factor, time, and entertainment. Compared to those...Six Flags is a bargain.
This weekend, we finally made our voyage to kick off the end of summer and as a last hurrah before school started. We purchased our tickets online for $36.99 a person using a coupon code and prepaid the $20 parking fee. If you use their link via ebates, you get 2.5% back in cash, AND you save and additional 5% when you pay with your Discover card. Bottom line, after the $5 processing fee, we ended up paying a total of $125 after all the discounts, making 3 tickets plus parking about $42 a person.
Some memories never leave you. Both my husband and I were just as excited to see the skytower and outline of the Eagle as we were as children. Seeing my little one's amazement was priceless. It is every bit as magical and fun as I remembered it to be as a child, not as in adult because this time I was able to see it through my son's eyes.
They now have several sections through out the park for the small set...unfortunately for my son, he was way too tall for many of them...he didn't seem to care however because he's outgrown them and considers them to be for babies. He wasn't tall enough for the real exciting roller coasters, but he was tall enough for the Eagle. I am proud to say that my baby boy was fearless and absolutely loved it. They also purchased the historic Little Dipper from Kiddieland. when it closed. The wait for that ride was over an hour! (Advice to parents...remember to go to the bathroom often, and do keep a snack handy!)
Food. I almost made the mistake of purchasing their picnic meal plan. It was an all you can eat meal from 1:00pm-230. It would have cost $8 a person more than the promo that I had found. I am so glad that I did not. The lines for the feeding frenzy were insane. There was no way that I would have waited in that line. The last people in line were lucky to be fed at 230pm. It was that bad. Prices were truly over the top. A slice of bad pizza cost $7.50 per small slice. Drinks were $3.99. We spent $45 on lunch for 3 people! If the food was great, it wouldn't be an issue. (We did opt to purchase the souvenir cup for $14 that included free refills all day and 99 cents per returning refill throughout the 2011 season. We also later purchase their popcorn deal.) If you use your Discover card at the park, everything is an additional 5% off.
Definitely worth the trip. Lots of new thrill rides, the water park looks awesome, and we have no regrets. For smokers, they do have smoking areas, it's wheelchair accessible, and the park is clean! I am sad that I no longer see any sailors, however.
Next year, I think that we will take the plunge and purchase a season pass as well as the season pass that includes free tix for friends on specific dates, a discount on all purchases, etc. I will also purchase their souvenir popcorn and drink cups too. It will pay for itself on 3 visits. Pack your own picnic for tailgating and it will be even more cost efficient. -

We are very lucky to get to this company exclusive event in Six Flags Great America every early Sept. This year we spent about 6 hours in the park and truly enjoy the whole evening.
There were a few wonderful rides for 6-10 year old and for me.
Demon was a nice surprise for me. I didn't think a ride with a minimum 42" height required would be so much fun. Demon has two loops and corkscrews. The whole ride was fast and smooth. My kids loved it and I was happy to rode on this with them for the second time.
Giant Drop was a first time for kids this year. I was surprised they did not fear 227 feet drop. I loved the floating in the midair feeling when I was dropping and butt was not touching on the seat at all.
Kids loved Ragin' Cajun which was fun but kind of jerky for me. The best part is that the whole seat with me and 2 kids in it was circling around when it still moved downward fast. We shifted back and forth and squeezed each other to the sides. We laughed all the way down. Pretty cool.
The Dark Knight Coaster was dark and kind of jerky. I didn't feel it worth my limited time in the park. Kids said that was lame. Well...
American Eagle now has backward which actually was not as thrilled as I thought it would be. Other than the first drop, it was bumpy and not so much fun after. Kids liked the forward better too.
Viper is a wooden structure roller coaster as American Eagle and as bumpy as that too. It I think it was fine for me and kids.
Now, the rides require minimum 54" in height.
BATMAN ride is very fast and surprisingly smooth. It was intensively packed with loops and turns. I rode on this two times and wish I had more.
On Spider man ride, you are strapped or locked to a position which is parallel to the ground. The most exciting part is that I was flying toward the ground for a moment which made my chest tighten. Overall, a nice ride but I didn't think it was fast enough for my taste.
Vertical Velocity was pretty cool but it was very predicable which kind of lowed the level of the thrill.
I remember Iron wolf was very exciting from last year but it was closed on this day.
I didn't have the time to ride on Raging Bulls this time due to the limited time. Should have skipped the Dark Knight.
I always liked the cleanness of this park. The food there is very pricey. And they really check your bag at the door to discard your drinks and food. My friend had his energy drink dumped at the gate. -

Too expensive and way too commercialized. Adds on the roller coasters???? WTF!
Oh well, my kids had a good time and that's what matters. -

The "meh, I've experienced better" really refers to Great America BEFORE they started the Fast Pass option. As non-Fast Passers, this feature was detrimental to our trip.
Lines weren't horrendous while we were there, but we definitely waited up to 2 hours for the Raging Bull and 1.5 hours for Batman. This wasn't because the main lines were that long. It was because the number of fast passers jumping in line delayed the regular park-goers. Eventually, everyone will have to buy a fast pass just so they can actually get on the coasters (we were there for 10 hours and made it on 8 rides...and keep in mind that each ride is less than 60 seconds long), but by the then the fast pass will no longer be a fast option, so the park prices will just rise significantly. They really should think about limiting the number of fast passes available on any given day, but they won't, I'm sure, because considering that those who purchase the fast pass pay almost double the online price of $40, the park is making bank on them.
It's not like they're not making bank everywhere else though. Food and drinks were ridiculously expensive, but we were able to avoid the large drink costs by buying one $3.50 water bottle each and filling it at the free water fountains every so often. One meal for 4 people cost $50, but I suppose anyone who has been to a movie theater, a ball park or a museum in the past 10 years should expect as much at Great America.
That being said, would I go back? Probably. I still had a good time. -

I WOULDN'T WAIT IN LINE AN HOUR TO RIDE KIM KARDASHIAN.
LET ALONE A ROLLER COASTER.
PROS: Some pretty bad@ss roller coasters. I rode the twenty five year old American Eagle and it was awesome! I like the older coasters that give you the feeling something horrible could happen and you'll end up on the CBS evening news. It's a very clean park.
CONS: LONG LINES to ride anything. The Iron Wolf coaster will box your ears. $20 to park. Some rides didn't open until noon. $3.50 for a twenty ounce bottled soda. Advertisements everywhere - I had to stare at Lysol ads while in the restroom.
I'd return on a slow attendance day in the Fall but NEVER again in the summer. -

GHETTO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Unless you want to be in between a gang fight or have your kid knocked over by some ignorant scum bag with his pants at his knees and his hat tilted sideways....go anywhere but here!!!!!!!!
Uggggghhhhh,...YUCK.
Where do I begin. A few months ago I bought a pass as I had one many years before and really enjoyed it. Well Saturday night was the second time I went this year. The first time I went at 10 and a thunderstorm hit. We left. Second time around...I wish I never wasted my time. DISGUSTING.
Parents were hard to come by. (yes,...with an S...meaning both mom and dad not single mother toting around 5 kids with the youngest straggling behind her and the oldest at the lost and found booth). Kids were all ove rthe place, unattended acting like BeBe's kids. Cutting lines, running and knocking into people.
Teenagers and above (yes...some people looked in their 30"s) walking around with barely no clothes on flesh expose, no bra wearing girls, asses showing, pants sagging, girls with their shorts unbottoned like "im 13 and easy, come impregnate me please so I can collect welfare" all over the place. One girl bent over in front of me and I had to be blinded by her fat @ss....NOT RIGHT...they should have a dress code.
Some ghetto gangbanger teenager got into a fighting match with an older father holding his kids. Are you kidding me??? Kids in line, parents (those who were civilized) were petrified. Its grunee...not the west side of chicago...keep your gang fights there please.
Went on 1 ride and couldnt handle another second of it. Had to leave.
That place is not what it used to be....disgusting. You want to know where the trash is in the summer...there!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do not go with your family and kids if you have an ounce of class!!!!!!!!!!!! You will have to explain to your kids once you get them home!!! Not worth it!!!!!!!!!!!!
GROSS GROSS GROSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -

This place is great!! We had so much fun.
It had gotten a bit trashy for a few years, but they seem to have cleaned most of that up. Maybe the higher prices weeds out the trash. Which works for me. I'd rather pay an extra $10/person, than be standing in line between all the gang-bangers.
The rides are being very well kept. In fact, they seem to have added several new things over the past couple years. The park was really clean. The coasters are FABULOUS!!! Loves me some Batman and Raging Bull!!
The hours were good. The staff all seemed well trained, and always checking from a ride safety standpoint.
Yay for Great America! It's a must-go, at least once a year.
Oh.... Price - I found a deal online for buy one get one free if you used it during the week. So normal price is like $59/person. So we got 2 tickets for $59. Sweet deal.
We went on the 4th of July. I expected it to be mobbed, and to be honest it was awesome. Everyone must've been at BBQ's, because we didnt wait more than 15 minutes for one ride! AND, to top it off, they did fireworks, which were the best fireworks I've ever seen. They even topped the city of Chicago's fireworks. BAM!
Highly recommended. -

Ok, I'm not gonna lie. I'm AFRAID of rollercoasters. SHUT UP. But when a group of my friends decided to go in August before school, I couldnt resist. Ive been to Six Flags Great America when I was little, but a cant remember it. Heres some good points:
1.) Make sure to order tickets online. Or bring a Coke can to 6F to get $15-$20 off. I already ordered my season pass for next year--TWO visits and it pays for the pass. Plus you get four free guest passes throughout the season.
2.) Expect the worst. Rides can not be working anytime. My friends and I went on a Monday and waited no longer than 30 minutes for a ride. Try to get there on a weekday.
3.) Food can be expensive. If you are looking for a cheap meal, bring a cooler in your car and get your hand stamped. Then you could re-enter the park. If you are looking for something cheap in the park, the pizza deal is like $6 for a big slice and breadsticks. I recommend getting the all-day cup soda refill thingy. It costs $15 and free refills all day. The rides have about 100 holes for them when you get on.
4.) The rides ARE AWESOME. I rode Batman (3 times), the two water rides, Viper, Demon, Superman (2 times), Raging Bull (2 times), and Iron Wolf. I was too scared of V2. lol.
5.) Best ride- Batman: its the least scary of the scary. LOL
I had an AMAZING time, and will return numerous times next season. -

Get the platinum flash pass. Yeah it's kind of expensive but worth every penny. You get to ride twice each time and cut out 90 percent of the wait time. But they also have a military discount on it. Over the course of ten hours we rode nearly 50 rides on a fright fest Saturday... So you will get your money back in sweetness. The park also has free refills on drinks on the day of collector cup purchase and the food specials and selections have improved a lot. It's basically the best place ever!

We had a blast!! My favorite was Raging Bull, least favorite was Dark Knight which I didn't find worth riding at all. It was hot so an afternoon break at Hurricane Harbor was perfect.
We went on a Monday in late July hoping to avoid crowds... it didn't seem too bad but I honestly can't compare it to a summer weekend day because I haven't been. That said, it is DEFINITELY worth splurging for the Flash pass. We went on about 20 rides, including Hurricane Harbor, but a friend who went the same day only went on about 5. At $60/person + $20 parking, you're already spending almost $150 just for two people to walk in the park so you should ensure you'll get to go on all the rides.
We did the gold pass which is the middle level and gets you a beeper on which you sign up for the next ride (most big coasters available) and then it tells you what time to show up in line. You walk in a separate entrance and go straight to the front so you only wait for your specific spot on the ride. We basically went from one ride straight to the next and never waited more than 20 minutes (that was partly because we were slow to identify the platinum Flash passes which get to ride two times back-to-back so getting behind the purple wristbands will lengthen your wait).
My other recommendation if you're driving north to get there, if you see traffic near the exit keep left on the freeway and overshoot it, get off and circle back to approach it from the north. It took us about an hour to go one mile to exit the freeway and enter the parking lot but I've since driven past heading south and it's pretty open so should cut down your time significantly. -

Complete Rip-Off. Had a buy one get one coupon for Fright Fest this weekend so my sister and I thought we would go. Got there a little after 11am and it was already packed. Lines for everything were horribly long. We waited 2.5 hours for Superman then after an hour of waiting for Batman we left to get a Flash Pass. The line for that was even a half hour long and cost me $160 for 2 people. The park was really understaffed, the lines for even food and drinks were a half hour, even popcorn? I will never come back here for Fright Fest or during the weekend ever. If we wouldn't have gotten the pass we would have only rode maybe 4 rides. That is just stupid.

Always a fun time...I highly recommend you get the season pass...two visits and it is paid for! Plus you can go for a few hours and if it is packed you can just leave and come back another day and not feel like you wasted your money.
Some changes for 2011...
The Loney Toon Land has been removed. So if you have small kids you will be upset by this. The helicopters, buzzy bee's, looney toon ball shoot and looney toon train are now gone forever!!! Six Flags replaced it with...the Go-Kart Track that use to be at the front gate. This is the worse move ever and should receive one star because there was no thought in this choice except for pure money. The Go-Kart Track is an upcharge at 6 Flags and should not be placed in the middle of the park. The engine noise alone is going to ruin the famed historic Little Dipper. Good job preserving history with the annoying noise of Gas Engines racing around a track.
The origina Go-Kart Track has been replaced by a water slide and a swimming pool for Hurricane Harbour but it is not open yet and still under construction as of May 8, 2011...we will have to see how it looks when it opens in a few weeks.
The Wiggles land is no longer the Wiggles. I am sure that Six Flags is saving tons of money by removing the names. So every ride name has changed. This is not the first time a ride name has changed at Six Flags and definately will not be the last. It just confused my little girl a little.
Other then that it seems like business as usual.
Newest Food Item for 2011...the grilled banana...for 4.99 and it is covered in crap that will give you a heart attack...enjoy!
They are also pushing stuff that is called GO BIG...combinations of food and activities for a set price.
Changes happen ever year but the roller coasters keep speeding by and everyone has a great time. Hopefully we will get a new coaster in 2012!!! -

Had a blast here today with work. Nothing beats getting paid to go to Six Flags! However, I found things were way different than my last visit.
Like I said, the park has changed a ton since the last time I have been there (summer of 2009). Whole rides are gone, things are moved around, it's like a totally different park in some respects. For starters, where you used to wait/walk in for the American Eagle is now a Kid-opolis, a kiddy area. There is also a go-kart track smack dab in the middle of the park that you have to pay extra for. Not a good location for parents/caregivers (kids see it and go NUTS!), but a great location for them to nab business.
Food was way expensive. We spent well over $100 for 11 of us to eat chicken fingers/french fries or a slice of pizza. Water bottles were $3. Not a good price point when you're visiting on a budget.
One good thing was that we got disability passes since our group was teenagers with disabilities. One down side is that the woman insisted everyone in our group have a pass and our kids had some major meltdowns while she took 20+ minutes filling out the forms. She was very nice about it, so I shouldn't complain, but we only used 2 of the passes regularly (they all come with +5 guests, so for 11 of us that is all we needed).
Staff was very friendly and receptive to our special needs and overall the kids had a great time! Would I plan a trip to take children/teenagers there again? Maybe, if I wasn't on such a small budget. Would I go back by myself? Probably! -

I used to love coming to 6 Flags. I love roller coasters and themeparks, but this place has really gone downhill. My friends and I would come here every year for Fright Fest. Unfortunately the last time we went, we paid their expensive, outrageous fees to get in and only went on 2 rides ALL DAY. Why? Because most of the rides were broken down, and the rides that weren't have crazy lines. And then while we were waiting in the long lines to get on the rides, those would break down too. I don't know what is wrong with those rides, but they shouldn't be breaking that much. Ever since then, I felt that it was a waste of money and time to come to 6 Flags, and if I'm going to spend that kind of money I would rather travel to a better themepark.

I seriously used to love this place and have had a season pass before. I'll prolly still keep going here but I had HUGE issues with the way the park is starting to be run.
It used to be you show up, park, pay your entrance fee, and enjoy with extras being any food or games you play. Now you can hardly take a step without a jacked up charge everywhere you go.
Want better parking? That'll be an extra $10 on top of the $15 your already paying.
Want less wait time? Get the fast pass which charges you more based on the level you want to pay for convience. Walt Disney did a thing were you basically just grab a number and come back when its your turn, much better system and fair to all.
Thirsty? Get a $15 dollar refillable drink BUT you can't take it on the rides anymore and we'll charge you a dollar per ride to store it in a locker. THIS is my biggest grip!! What do you mean I can't set down my drink or hat or glasses on the side while I ride? You're seriously gonna charge me an extra $1 PER RIDE to store my stuff?? I lost a pair of eye glasses on Iron Wolf because of this. My friend and I took to stuffing our bottles in bushes before getting on to avoid the $1 up charge. Things ran great in the park for years before this change. So you take a little risk by letting your stuff out of sight for a couple minutes but I never lost anything and I don't bring anything I'd hate to lose in with me.
It's like management got together and had a meeting about how they could gouge the heck out of customers. Almost everything has an upcharge now and its almost impossible to get away with just paying admission to enjoy your day. -

I've been making an annual trek to Great America since about 1981 with only a few misses when the kids were babies. Needless to say my life has changed dramatically over the years but the park has not. Sure the rides have upgraded quite a bit but my favorites are still the Whizzer, American Eagle, Triple Play, East River Crawler, Condor and Sky Trek Tower. I don't go much for those high intensity rides anymore and my kids aren't tall enough anyway, thank goodness.
Now my guess is, few of you who grew up anywhere in the tri-state region have made it this far in life without having visited so I am just going to give the Mom's out there who may be visiting with grade school kids for the first time, a few pointers to help them along.
When to go:
Weekdays are best. I've heard weekends have nightmare lines. Weekdays do not. Even the Fourth of July week was light on lines for the rides we wanted. We get there at 10 and leave at 10. Flash Passes don't seem worth the money for the moderate rides.
Food:
Eat a healthy and late breakfast before arriving at the park. Food is cheap outside and very, very expensive inside. You don't want to walk in the gate and hear, "I'm hungry!" I usually pack a cooler to leave in the car. You can get your hand stamped and walk back. But in case you don't get your act together, and that happens, I thought the Mooseburger Lodge wasn't too bad. The ribs ($14) were awful but the barbecue brisket sandwich ($12) and the burger ($11) were ok. The waffle fries that come with the meal combos were stale and luke warm but at least the restaurant is nicely decorated and frigidly air conditioned and at 2pm on a Friday there was plenty of seating. We've done the County Fair Food Court in years past with the pizza, hotdogs and Panda Express. It's all just, ok, with decent portion sizes but very pricey. When I was a kid I remember liking Aunt Martha's Chicken so we may check that out next time. Of course, when I was a kid I liked Spaghettios.
The Souvenier Bottomless Cup for $15 is a pretty good deal if your family doesn't mind sharing their soda or Hi C and it's a hot day and you like drinking soda or Hi C. But bring a ribbon or something to identify your cup as your own. When you put it in the designated (free) cubbies while you are riding, you don't want to have anyone accidentally grab yours. The ribbon or yarn will identify it. I actually stole a plastic flower from the Mooseburger Lodge and wrapped that around the handle. Hey! My mediocre family lunch cost $63.85 so I don't feel that guilty about it, alright!
For desert my favorite spot is Hometown Square where the kids can get their beloved Dippin Dots ($6) and I can get my much loved Funnel Cake ($8). It's two different places surrounding the square, the first a kiosk and the other a counter but you can sit on the shaded benches and people watch while you eat. There's nothing you can bring in your car that will be as good as that so suck it up and have an early evening splurge.
Carry Ins and Clothing:
Mom's, I know this is going to be hard for you, but don't bring in a purse. I've tried a little tiny purse with a long strap wrapped around me and they still wouldn't let me wear it on some of the rides, a couple of years I wore a passport belt to keep my stuff and that worked pretty well but it gets hot. This year I did it just right wtih safari style camp capris with deep pockets that button. I brought in cash, chapstick, two bandaids, car keys, cell phone, my ID, insurance card and Discover Card (5% off all purchases in the Park if you use your Discover). And that's it. Slobber on waterproof sunblock and take two ibuprofens before you go in and you won't need anything else. And the all day lockers are crazy expensive.
This is not a fashion contest as you will see quickly upon arrival. Be comfortable. Wear light cotton clothing that will breathe and dry quickly. If it is a hot summer day you do not want to be wearing synthetic clothing that doesn't breathe or even heavy cotton that will not dry quickly. You are going to do the water rides and you and the kids will be uncomfortable if you are soaking wet all day. Keep sweatshirts in the car to go back for if you need to. Tevas, Crocs and other comfortable sandals with straps are best for footwear. Flip flops break, cause blisters and fall off on rides. Gym shoes are hot and stay wet after water rides.
Disclaimer:
We haven't done the Hurricane Harbor water park. We have a nice water park in Des Plaines and this place just looks so huge I didn't think we needed to go there so I can't really speak to what you need for that experience. Maybe next year.
Rides: Measure your kids height and go online before you get to the park to figure out which level of rides you are going to be able to do. They do a nice job in rating them by intensity. And then just go with what the kids want. If they have fun, you will too. Enjo -

I'd like to start off by saying I have a been a long time visitor to six flags. Out of the last 16 years, I've had a season pass for 12 of them. They definitely have some great coasters and have made some improvements, but they are still lacking.
Positives: Great Coasters(Batman, Raging Bull, Vertical Velocity, American Eagle and the Whizzer), Great location (easy to find and has lots of visibility), Much cleaner in the last few years (but not the cleanest as you made have noticed they removed that phrase from their recording), Decent season pass pricing especially if you buy a 4 pack.
Negatives: Over priced food/drink, Rude/Uneducated staff, Removal of fun attractions, over priced parking and horrible season pass perks.
Over price food/drink: Definitely used to have more of a variety of food and only had "actual" meals available in the "restaurants" which invited you in to take a load off and eat. Now they all serve the same food, charge way too much and are no longer warm and inviting. Also, the one in the southwest territory closed and the one in the Yukon territory is only open sometimes. These two locations used to be the best and had entertainment as well as dining. What happened? Selection through out the park is mediocre at best.
Rude/Uneducated staff: I have had several poor staff encounters recently. Last '10 season I approached a ride line just as they closed the rope off saying the park is now closed. The attendant apologized and I turned to walk away. While I was walking away, 4 high school aged girls ran towards the line hoping to get on and the ride attendant checked to see if anyone was looking and opened the line for them. I immediately walked back and asked the attendant why she let them on. She tried to tell me that they got there before I did, and I proceeded to tell her I would report her to guest relations. They gave me a huge run around as usual and said sorry there's nothing we can do.
Yesterday, I was at Hurricane Harbor and got my bag stolen with my clothes in it. I went to find a security officer and there wasn't one to be found. After searching I found 3 security officers talking amongst themselves and when i asked if some one could help me, they seemed bothered that I broke up their conversation. The security guard took down my basic info, said oh well a lot of things have been stolen today and left me standing there. I had to go back and search the area myself and decided to file a police report with the Gurnee PD.
Removal of fun attractions: NO MORE MAGIQUEST!!!! I became addicted to this game and now it's not there?!?!? Why?
Overpriced parking: $20 to park?!? Disney charges this much but it is valid all day at all 4 parks!!! Also, if you pay the $70 for season pass parking this year you have to park with everyone else. No special section anymore. Thus, on busy days you have to park in the west lot. Remind me why I paid $70?!?!!!!!
Horrible Season Pass perks: So there's no more special parking and now the coupon book is essentiality useless! Coupons valid only on weekdays? I'm sorry I have a real job! They also removed the good coupons that people actually used. I'd be willing to pay more for a pass if the perks were better.
This is my short list...I hope you get the picture. Needless to say, I will no longer be getting a season pass! -

One word to describe my experience: EXPENSIVE.
It's expensive to purchase a ticket at Six Flags - reg price $60
It's expensive to park your vehicle - $20
It's expensive to purchase drinks - $4 for lemonade, $15 for refill pop
It's expensive to purchase food - chicken strips meal $14, ice cream $6
It's expensive to go on race carts - NOT FREE WITH YOUR TICKET
It's expensive to play kids' games - Minimum $3 per throw, ball, etc.
It's expensive to drive to Six Flags - As of 6/26/2011, $4 per gal Unleaded
Basically, everything's just expensive here...... -

My season passes were totally worth it! I don't take my child to eat here because the food is expensive. But I also got a parking pass, which was VERY worth it. My son never objected to going to Six Flags this summer, and was always very excited to go. I went twice without him and this year. I actually went on the Giant Drop! WHAT A RUSH! I don't know if I'd ever do it again, but I can finally say I did! When I have gone on the "Big Kid" rides the only one that had a ridiculous wait time was Super Man (also my first time riding) but totally worth the wait! My son LOVES the Demon and we always ride front or back carts. Six Flags totally made my summer and my son's! Giant Drop... Check off my Bucket List! lol So excited they're taking Iron Wolf down and putting in the new XFlight!!! Will be getting Season Passes again!.. Given my son does a great job on his studies=) (Which he will hahaa)

A great amusement park for all ages. Roller coaster lovers...get here early as then you can hit all the coasters before the lines get long later in the day. During the summer, lines can be an hour or more for the best rides during the afternoon.
So, fill your stomachs before you come and don't have lunch until 2 or 3 if you can. That is when the lines for rides are the longest. So, it would be a good time to take a rest break and eat lunch leisurely and map out the rest of the afternoon and evening. Come 5 or 6, lines will start to thin again.
If you have a season pass, pop in when it opens and do your rides to start the day then go about your business and enjoy the rest of your day whereever. -

Come on. You can't expect the lines to move like they do at Disney World. This is allegedly the "cleanest theme park" on earth, not the BEST. No one does it like Disney.
That being said, we used our season passes, which paid for themselves at least three times over, and we went to Great America the day before Labor Day. Of course the lines are going to be long, dumbasses. So, we did the cool things that require some extra dough, but are truly fun. We had a caricature done of the two of us; and, we opted to go on rides that do not require that anyone be at least 48" tall. That makes waiting on lines damn near non-existent.
Haven't needed a fast pass because we pick the days we go carefully. My beef is that we paid $13 for unlimited fountain soda; and, no matter where it go refilled, the soda was flat. Not cool. -

No matter how old you may get, this place is ALWAYS a blast. My wife and I buy season tickets every year and try to make it out there at least 3 times, with one of the visits being Freight Fest for Halloween. Like they are known for, the park is EXTREMELY clean. Spending an entire day here can get expensive depending on how you do it. We dislike, more than stepping broken class, waiting in line for hours upon hours, so we spend the cash and get the Premium Flash pass so we can skip all the line (well worth the money). Lastly, the place is full of every piece of junk-food you can imagine. The prices are extremely inflated, but hey - they have to pay for their enormous annual insurance premium somehow.

My first experience here was on the final day of the season in 2010 - Halloween.
I had a great time, although a few of the rides were closed due to the Halloween attractions taking up some space around the park. I'm not a huge "haunted house" fan, so I can't speak to how great they were, but they certainly did help get the coaster lines down once they opened up near dark.
It was only a few extra dollars to go ahead and purchase a season pass for next year, one of the benefits being that I can bring a friend for free any day, so I definitely made that purchase.
Hoping to have some great experiences in the coming summer to change this to a 5-star rating! -

It's been years since I've been on a roller coaster. Yes, the admission prices have gone up from when I remember. At the same time, it's not like I come here often so I'm fine with it knowing I'm going to ride some pretty good coasters.
I must admit, since it's been years, I was a little bit apprehensive but before long, I ended up riding pretty much everything including Superman, Iron Wolf, Batman, Viper, Raging Bull, American Eagle, Vertical Velocity and etc. etc. etc.
Overall I had a good time. Played a few games including the ring toss, where we used some coupons my cousins had. We threw 4 buckets full of rings to no luck. Won a few Basketballs for hitting a few baskets.
You're probably better off leaving the park for lunch or dinner options as the food is really overpriced. I wish there were more places to get a beer outside of maybe 1 restaurant inside the park. Overall, the place was how I remembered.
Anyway, here's evaluation of the notable rides:
Superman - pretty fun. A bit different being you are horizontal. The loops and spirals were really something!
Vertical Velocity - probably pure speed flying up and down. If you're into huge drops at crazy speeds both forward and backwards, this is for you.
Iron Wolf - First stand up coaster I can remember - Only, it is so herky jerky that my ears and head hurt from hitting between the headrests.
Raging Bull - One of the favorites. Super smooth in comparison to most rides. Fast, huge drops, quick turns - a lot of fun.
American Eagle - Classic Wooden Coaster that has been here for ages. - Huge drop. Corkscrew in between. Super jerky as it is super old but classic.
Viper - I think it's Eagle-lite really. More up and down drops though not as high. More on quantity though.
Overall, had a fun time. I can only handle a trip or two every few years. -
Review from Ericka A.
I will always be in love with Valley Fair in Minnesota, but this comes in at a close second. They have a few more roller coasters, but not as many rides for those who aren't about falling fast. Tea Cups are great, but they aren't Tilt-A-Whirl. The water rides are great. I had a lot of fun on boat ride and the giant rafts were the best. There is no way you are getting out of them dry.
I'm scared of heights and falling, but I was able to do pretty well on Whizzer and the water drop stuff. We mostly stuck to the stuff like Ricochet and the balloons. Lame, I know. I'm lame.
My biggest problem was the wait. It takes forever to get on any ride. You can purchase a Flash Pass, but I'm cheap. I just think it's ridiculous to wait 45min in line for a short ride that, as my friend put it, "you'd have more fun falling down the stairs." -

My first time coming here was pretty fun! I was nervous though.
Yes I was a baby and got scared when it came to the big rides but it's only because I get motion sick fast, okay? :(
BUT! Most of my day there was spent and nothing other than HURRICANE HARBOR!
It feels amazing when it's like 90 degrees outside! Though the bathrooms/dressing rooms were pretty gross, I felt even better when I went into the bathroom.
Though it is VERY expensive ($17 for a small locker?! $9 for chicken strips?! $8 for a funnel cake?! What???) the rides were fun and it made me want to come back, but next year :) -

It's OK. I came expecting a few things because of the reviews. Some things were right and some things were exaggerated.
First, the parking is not as bad as some people make it out to be. If you're from the city and you're used to walking, you won't even blink at the distance. Save yourself some money and park in the $15 lot. It's only a fifth of a mile from the entrance.
Second, the food prices. Yes, some things are gouged (funnel cakes $10) but other things are quite reasonable ($6.50 for a 20oz beer). We packed our own healthy lunch and left it in an iced cooler in the car, which actually served as a welcomed break from the heat and crowds. I recommend this to anyone who a) doesn't find greasy park food nastiness appealing and b) wants to save money on the trip.
Third, skip the flash passes unless you're going to buy the "Platinum" version ($$$$$). The rest don't really seem worth it when you read the specifics. We didn't buy any ourselves, since the lines were quite manageable, but also because I am fundamentally against the idea - all it does is reinforce class inequalities for something that should be a fun and pleasurable experience for ALL families, regardless of their ability to get gouged by corporate a-holes. Six Flags needs a PR firm.
Fourth, I actually found the employees quite pleasant and helpful. Maybe that's due to the fact that it's still early in the season, but several of them went out of their way to help us. Most were chatty and cheery, and not in that annoyingly contrived way.
One recommendation - the "Cyber Cafe" near the entrance era is quite adult friendly. They serve a variety of coffee options, provide free computer access (should you need to look up directions for the way home), a clean seating area and also some fresh whole fruit and bagels if your stomach needs a break from carnival fare. It was also a good place to get out of the rain and warm up for awhile. -

A short drive from Chicago, makes Six Flags an easily accessible trip and offers something different to do in the Chicago area. It's a small park so it's easy to travel all around the park but also means that it's very crowded. The rides are good but the lines are way to long -- I went after 5pm on Saturday in October and many lines were 2 hours or more. Also, if you have young kids the park seemed to have a lot of activities and rides to entertain them.
Six Flags is good if you need a roller coast fix and can't get to a better park. But if you can, make the trek to Cedar Point -- it's by far the best park I've been to in the Midwest and worth the drive. -

My best friend and I come here every year in August to just go nuts and ride all of our favorite rides. I give GA four stars not based on the park itself, but also on the memories I take back with me. So yes, maybe I am tilting the scale a bit, but whatever.
Here's what we love: Roller coasters (Batman, Raging Bull, Viper, and Superman, even though in my 27 years of life that ride is starting to hurt more and more), the slushie cart that tempts you with ice cold lemonade and slushies while you wait in line (the best $4 I ever spent while trying to get on Batman in 90 degree weather), Tea Cup ride, Ricochet, the Little Dipper from Kiddieland, and the Ragin' Cajun is the best ride in the place despite my constant fear of getting whiplash or my neck broken.
Getting in the front row of every ride is not a privilege, it's a right.
We also love nachos and cheese even though we passed on getting them this time around.
We just came here this week and the lines were fairly short despite the sunny day, and it wasn't too overly crowded. Even the water rides weren't bad. The longest ride had to have been the V2 but I find that to be a constant problem every time I go.
What we hate: WHAT HAPPENED TO THE CORN DOGS AND LICORICE ROPES? They were nowhere to be found. It was funny at first, then slightly annoying, then just infuriating. When I want to eat junk food, you better have it! I had to settle for a $9 Chicago hot dog that didn't even come with relish.
$20 parking. That's self explanatory.
The bathrooms stink and need some major fixing.
The rides and the park as a whole needs some remodeling. I'm not that picky, but when I see gum stuck in every crevice possible, money in the water from who knows when, dirty awnings, chipped paint on the rides, and dead bugs splattered all over the front car of the American Eagle, I start to wonder where my $60 admission just went to. They claim they are the cleanest theme park in the world, but I would like to say otherwise.
I can live with the fact that they charge money for every.little.thing. here. $11 for fries and chicken fingers? you better believe it. Did it stop us from eating? hell no! We work hard for our money, and I guess we spend it hard too..mostly on food. It's part of the fun! But...if you need to go the cheaper route...then yes, get a cooler, stock it up, leave it in the car, and go back and pig out for a bit before hitting the rides again.
I still recommend those $4 slushies though...I think I want one now.
What's with the Fast Passes, people? You think it's ok to cut in front of me in some random part of the line? is this what America is based on? Rudeness? I get that you paid another $495898 just to feel better about yourselves, but when I've been standing in the sun for 30 minutes just to be told I have to wait another 10 minutes to let the Express people on the ride first, well...i get a little irate, my friends. Don't make me mad. It's not worth the money, folks. Trust me on this. Universal does it better.
Anyway, Great America is great. I love coming here. But it could be EVEN BETTER if they fixed a few things. It's not going to stop me from returning, I just want to see GA be the best I know it can be. And then maybe that will justify the $60 admission. -

Ok, maybe since I've turned 30, I just don't have the patience for Great America anymore. The wait for rides is ridiculous, to the point where people fake disabilities to skip to the front of the line. The food is expensive and it just isn't what I remembered as a kid.
The Hurrican Harbor was fun until the park forces everyone out of the water every 20 minutes to wait for 20 minutes. I don't understand why they do that, and on a 99 degree day, it's bullshit.
Also, when will the pile of matchsticks called the "American Eagle" be fit to tear down? I swear it's gonna kill someone someday. When I rode it a million years ago, it was a piece of crap then..and it's still ricketing along.
I believe this is my last trip to Great America. -

The Goods: Papa Johns pizza, Coldstone ice cream, The Whizzer (Whizaaaa), Batman coaster, Raging Bull!, V2/Vertical Velocity/Axe Twist (it's a long wait though) and clean park with decent bathrooms.
The Bads: Only a few good coasters (see above), The Viper (unless you like having your brain feel like moosh afterwards), Iron Wolf (again, major brain moosh) and $15 to park ($25 for a closer spot??) is RIDICULOUS.
I will say that the Superman ride was one of the most unique rollercoasters I've ever been on, but I wasnt crazy about the ride in general especially after the long ass wait.
I am also unhappy with the whole VIP ticket thing because it seems so unfair. Maybe I'm just being a baby or super cheap but on at least two or three coasters I had to wait an extra turn because these VIP punks roll up the exit ramp and are able to get on before I am. It's un-American!
I knew Six Flags was going to have a hard time comparing to Cedar Point in Ohio, but I was not expecting it to fall so short. I had a good time with my friends but probably wont be back for a long while.
