It's kind of sad I used to live a few subway stops from this place (actually over a 10 year period I lived within 2 miles of Sista's a good period of the time) and even though they've been around for 12 years (so I hear) the first time I came here was a few weeks ago on my last (too short visit) to NYC.
Oliver Lake was playing (www.oliverlake.net) and I'm a huge fan. He was with his Organ group (which was different for the one I had seen him with at the knitting factory but that was years ago.) He had Freddie Hendrix on trumpet, Bill McClelland on drums and Jared Gold on organ and they were all amazing! McClelland, the drummer was particularly mesmerizing.
Sista's is a smallish place; more of cafe than a jazz club but cozy, warm and really inviting. If you do go (and I suggest that you do go) don't believe the address, the entrance is really around the corner from Nostrand on Jefferson. The ride is a little long (take the A train) and the price is a little high ($20 for Oliver) but it's a truly a worthwhile experience if you're a jazz person like me.
