I like hanging out here and doing some fun tasting and talking with new friends. You can get food next door.
Since most will review the wine...I'll do the beer this time...They also serve beers by the bottle. Try the Pinkus for a real treat. I discovered it 30 years ago in Muenster Germany as it is their local brew. So happy to see it in the States. If you like it, BevMo carries it sometimes. The blue label is their orginal and its is the first "organic" beer from way back, but now becoming popular. The yellow label is their Weizen and it is very good, too. -

Just based on a tasting:
They have a LARGE wine selection here, for a tasting room. A choice of 4-5 different flights based on your preferences. The sommeliers were friendly and accommodating, though they didn't give blurbs about each wine (could be a positive or negative, depending how you look at it) as they poured. Blurbs are available on the tasting menu. If you're planning on going to 3 tasting rooms in the area, I'd put Sip at number 3 (behind Cornell and Malibu Wines OR Malibu & Vine -- they have the same wines, Semler + Saddle Rock).
Classic rock playing in the background, and a rustic laid-back feel to the room. -

To coordinate a morning wedding rehearsal, I was SO excited to plan a rehearsal brunch at a cute wine bar close to the wedding site. It took A LOT of phone calls to get a hold of the events coordinator, Andrew - multiple phone calls, e-mails with the owner, etc - but once I finally was able to speak with him voice to voice we were all set up for a lovely rehearsal brunch the day before our wedding!
The Cinderella story doesn't last, however. I made a few phone calls to confirm the date, time, and reservation number a few weeks and a few days prior to the event, with two thumbs up all the way around.
Nevertheless, four days before the wedding I received an e-mail stating they could no longer accommodate our party. So four days before the wedding I searched for another restaurant in the area that could accommodate an event for a wedding party. Fortunately there are many other restaurants that are significantly easier to work with than this one.
I have yet to actually go to this wine bar, so can't comment on the wine, atmosphere, etc. But if you are looking to host an event here, get ready for a lot of phone calls and the possibility of it falling through at the last minute! -

What a great freakin' place this is! My brother organized a wine tasting and invited about 15 people.
All met up and found a large bench /table that fit all of us. We tasted 4-5 different wines and a few beers. My bro brought meat/cheese platters, shrimp cocktail and french bread! If you don't bring your own snacks there is a general store next door so you can pick up some goodies.
The service was great!! They know their wines!!
Its great just spending a early saturday evening w/ family and friends sipping on a few glasses of wine! -

This place was great. My favorite out of all the Malibu Wineries. When you go ask for Fabrice, he is very knowledgeable and friendly. Great location, great wines, great music. Black Widow and Honey Pie are a must try!

This review would have gotten 1 STAR if I was purely judging this place by their customer service. I've upped it to 2 STARS due to its quaint atmosphere and good wine selection.
However, a note to the manager: When one of your employees says its okay for customers to bring in their own food as long as they purchase wine, DO NOT kick them out of the establishment after they've opened their entire picnic, bottle of wine and started playing a board game. The place was EMPTY and we were not bothering anyone. The hassle of packing everything back up was ridiculous - I almost dumped the entire bottle of wine in the middle of the seating area.
Note to readers: Malibu Winery just down the road at Mullholland Hwy and Kanan deserves your business over this establishment. -

We went on a Sunday afternoon of a holiday week-end. It is a beautiful setting but very pricey for the quality. You are paying for the swanky location and the beautiful setting.
We did the Monster tasting at 18 bucks a pop for 4 tastes. The wine was quite good and the pours generous. The service was polite but not overly attentive, as I expected for the price: they were not uncaring, just busy. There is complementary valet parking. I'm not crazy about anyone driving my car, but there is no other option. So it was close to 50 semolians for wine tasting, but a good experience.
The bathroom is huge nice and clean. We may give this another try on a not so busy day. Negatives and positives are even in my book.Listed in: Wine tasting

It's fine. Service was a bit gruff, and for 25 bucks they were pretty stingy with the tasters. It is a nice location, so stop if you have little else to do.

Last trip to Malibu we stumbled upon The Old Place, which immediately turned into a favorite of ours, so for my wife's birthday we planned a return. For the day we toured the area tasting rooms, and while they are all pretty great, this one is the clear winner. You'd be hard pressed to find a better local destination for drinking wine. Though they've only been around for a couple of years, it feels as though it's been there for decades. Like many of the local establishments, it's warm and inviting, friendly and comfortable. There is a great outdoor patio area, with tables and fire pits, lots of seating and it's undoubtably crowded on nice days. It was raining off and on on our visit, so we had the big firepit to ourselves.
The tasting area is quite cool, and there are two little rooms off the sides with sofas to lounge in. Andrew and the staff are great, and the wines are delicious. They also aren't cheap, the flight prices are fairly high from $15-18 but they are pretty generous on the pours and the quality of wines is quite high. Bottle prices are pretty expensive for the most part. My two favorites were over $90 a bottle whichi is way out of my stratosphere to purchase but it was fun to taste them.
Be careful where you park, it can be dangerous. While we were tasting a car came along and slammed into a parked car knocking them both into the gulch below. Fortunately, no one was badly hurt but we had parked in the exact spot five minutes before and decided to move our car. From talking to the staff, it seems like there are some crazy incidents occasionally. Don't say I didn't warn you.
If you are in the area, this is a must stop. If you come, you may not leave, so plan your day accordingly. This and the Cornell tasting room are open late, so visit Malibu and Rosenthal first and end up here.
Absolutely loved this place. Perfect.

Great wine, generous pours, awesome people, and beautiful surroundings...why would you not want to come here for a wine-filled afternoon?
The people there are super knowledgeable about the wines they serve and they make sure you have a GREAT experience.
I seriously can't wait to head back up to Malibu for more wine tasting fun with my friends! -

It's been a long time since I have had a California Cabernet that I liked, but Cielo has done it. And this little wine bar in the hills really brings the whole experience to fruition.
I highly recommend the Sip for the entertainment, the great wine, and the friendly environment. -

Holy crap! I just bought a $95 bottle of wine!
My boyfriend and I went there yesterday for my birthday, and I'm so glad I was finally able to convince (coerce? It's my birthday, we do what I want! ;)) to visit this place. I picked it from all the other ones based on Yelp reviews, as I wanted to good wine. And good wine I received.
The men at the counter are very knowledgeable about their wine, and I had to just sit back and accept their suggestion, which I gladly did, after my first choice that didn't work out too well. They weren't shy with the pourings and when we asked if we could eat my birthday cake slice at the counter, they even poured some more of our favorite to accompany it.
Oh, but in general, no outside food, please :)
We ended up eating our picnic lunch outside before the tasting, in front of the General Store right next door, as they had some patio seating.
There is some barstools at the counter, but they also have a lot of outside seating area with fireplace. You can get your pours at the counter and go sit around and taste. Lovely place :)
They are open past 6pm on some nights, but I saw a notice that only bottles and glasses after 6, so I think that may have meant no more tastings after that? Do check with them to make sure.
We both fell for this one bottle, Malibu Rouge, just sooo tasty and special, so I couldn't leave without one. They also comp'd the tasting with the purchase of the wine, so it wasn't that expensive after all :) It could have been that it was my birthday (others were celebrating theirs there too and there were anniversaries around us), or maybe they just do it for everybody. But yeah, I'm waiting for another special occasion to crack that one open, it's the most expensive bottle I have ever bought. And I know for sure I loved it, as I wasn't toasty yet when I first tried it ;) -

SIP was recommended to us by a fellow wine club member at another winery. I loved the atmosphere and the Woodstock theme. The bar was packed so we sat at the tables next to the bar. We had 8 people in our group, but the bartender only asked 2 of us what they wanted and actually started to pour for them before continuing with the group. After we received our first pours he went outside for about 10 minutes and then came back for pour number 2. 20 minutes later our glasses were still empty and the bartender was utterly ignoring us. We had 2 pours left in our flights and decided to leave. We left enough money for the pours we received. We wanted to join their wine club because all of the wines were delicious unfortunately we will not return. Moral of the story: great wines only get you so far.

Very lovely place. Wonderful service and wines. Went for a friend's birthday. Not overly overpriced, but some of their wines are expensive. Had their cheese platter and olives to snack on. It is a great place to go check out and even just drive around from winery to winery here in Malibu.
The decor is very hip and rock'n roll-ish. They have a nice outside area and pretty large patio. I will definitely be back. -

The only thing I know about wine is it's made from grapes and that it's for girls; just kidding about the last part, well sort of. But you know who loves wine? My lovely mother and it was her birthday so we decided to do a little day tripping and head to Malibu. Malibu!?!?! You say? Did you all know Malibu is home to several different wineries? Yelp did and that's how I found Sip.
Whether it be for a celebration or a just for fun type of thing Sip is an ideal place to spend the afternoon. We arrived a little after one and were able to snag a couple of chairs at the bar. We opted to try the Red Wine Flight for $15 and the Woodstock Flight for $15. I preferred the Woodstock Flight over the Red Wine Flight. I'm not going to pretend to act as if I know what's what when it comes to wine I just know the one wine we both liked and eventually decided to purchase a bottle of was the Woodstock Purple Haze. It was actually quite fitting for the mood of the day since there was classic rock playing in the background.
Things you should know about wine tasting at Sip:
-In spite of the fact that each tasting consists of only four one ounce pours it is possible to get a bit blitzed.
-This place is right next to the highway. This didn't bother me because the patio area is so enchanting it more than makes up for it.
-If you are not into wine that's OK because they also have a great assortment of beers from one of my much loved Trappist beers, the Westmalle Dubble to at least 6 different kinds of Samuel Smiths and then some.
-If you tell them it's your birthday they will give a cool free t-shirt!
-Pack a lunch and enjoy it with some wine on the patio.
-I still stand by my earlier statement that wine is for girls.Listed in: How about YES!!

Me: Where is the complimentary cheese and cracker plate you normally have?
Ceilo Staffer: We don't have it out because we are beginning our appetizer service. If we had free cheese and crackers, no one would buy the appetizers.
Gee. Thanks for your brutal honesty. I kinda feel taken advantage of. But I need something to soak up the wine. Let me see the menu.
Wow. A whopping 3 items. A meatball sandwich for $12, and two types of fries (regular and sweet potato) for $6 each. No real selection and pretty steep prices. Nevermind that I was used to thinking about this place as a generous place to go. Now they seem stingy and I don't like them as much.
Had you asked me before last Saturday, I would have given this place five stars.
The setting is still gorgeous, and the wines are still great.
And one more thing.
Live music is great, provided it is decent music. I'm ok that the music definitely skews baby-boomer. However I am not ok with Kenny G. wannabe sax. It was a buzz kill. -
Review from Yi Z.
The wines here are fabulous. I can't tell you which one was the best but even the worst at Sip was better than the best wines we tried at Rosenthal, Cornell and Malibu Family Wines. Cielo's wines tend to be a higher price point but you can really taste the difference.
We had two different flights and they were definitely pricey - about $15 for just 4 wines. But the pours were substantial and every wine was great. My friend loved the Blackbird but I was too drunk to be able to remember clearly which one I liked.Listed in: Wine

What a great little wine bar! The atmosphere is fantastic and I love the outside seating area. I found this place back in March and after visiting a few more times I became a wine club member. Their Woodstock wines are my favorite. The hosts are always friendly and generous with their pours. They seem very knowledgable about the wines and enjoy tasting with you. I highly recommend trying the cheese plate, their cheese pair quite well with the wine!

This place is a really cool place with a good vibe. I like that they give you more wine in your glass when you do the tasting rather the other places near by.
This place can get crowded so show up at a good time. The place next door has decent food when you need to sober up from the buzz. Mostly fried food.
Their wine selection is the Cielo Wines. I am a HUGE fan of the Woodstock collection and they have an awesome good priced wine club. They send you 3 bottles every 2 months of really tasty wines.
My favorite is the Honey Pie if your a whites lover. -

When bf's parents came into town, a friend of ours mentioned there was wine tasting in Malibu. Who knew?! Thanks to her and Yelp, we found this GEM!! I've never been to Napa, but I'd think anyone who loves Napa would love this place.
Hear that Ciara??!!!
Initially, we went to the actual Cielo vineyard, which is about a mile away. The big closed gate made us puzzled, so we rang the speaker and a nice lady explained they did the tastings at Sip. We had seen Sip on the way to the vineyard, so we happily zipped on back.
The sign that's visible from Kanan is for Rustic Canyon General Store & Grill, but there's a little sammichboard sign that says Sip. Plenty of parking - kitschy fountains and statues for sale, plus dead wood sculptures alongside the lot.
When you enter the fence where Sip is, it's like entering another world! The fenced-in area of graveled ground has pergolas above several knotty olive trees and winding Jasmine plants along the fence, a couple of levels of about 10 chair groupings, each with their own fire pit, and a hill that borders the area where the actual grape vines are staked and growing!
We went inside to the wine tasting bar area, and all the (6) stools were taken, so we looked at the menu. Seeing that we were unsure, the helpful guy behind the bar made a few recommendations and let us taste a couple before we settled on a glass each. I chose the Honeypie, a crisp muscat blend that was awesome. Bf got the Blackbird, and his parents got a Merlot and a white wine that was award winning ($12-$18-ish a glass).
We took our wines outside and settled into chairs right next to a fountain, with our own fire pit. Though it was a windy day, we were totally protected by the fence - and kept toasty with the fire pits. It was like a storybook little place, perfect to sit and chat and people watch.
We were treated to live music too - a couple of guys at the table next to us brought a guitar, and then at 4:00 Sip had their own live music - a guy on guitar who played Neil Young and other mellow music.
The grill/market has food that you can order, and snacky things that you can bring over and munch on. We got some great natural California chips, and ended up sitting and sipping and chatting for hours.
Aaaaaaahhhhh, now THAT ambiance and vibe felt like vacation! We saw a sign that said they have a blues breakfast on Sundays from 9am to 12 noon - so we'll have to come back for that! -

We stumbled across this place when my parents were in town. What a find! So Cal needs more places like Sip.
The ambiance is really magical: individual fire pits, lion head fountains, olive trees festooned with strings of white lights. Oh, and the gigantic chainsaw sculpture of a grizzly bear out front adds a rustic feel to the mix.
Imagine sitting there on a chilly overcast day, fire warming your feet, sipping on a glass of merlot or cabernet. Throw in live music (we had a couple of guys jamming on acoustic guitars who sang mostly stuff from the 60's, so my parents were thrilled) and you've got a spot worth driving to.
The wines were also very good. I got the Blackberry, a rich, aromatic red; GF got the Honeypie, a sweet white with notes of muscat. Mom got the Sauvignon Blanc, which, we were told, was the same SB they serve at the White House. It isn't cheap at $12 a glass but you can tell that this is a special winery.
There is also a general store nearby in case you get the munchies. All in all, this is one of those discoveries that we will be going back to again and again. -

If you are a serious wine taster, don't waste your time. The service was not good, and the wines sub par. We were waited on by a man who seemed to not understand the art of wine tasting. He was not very attentive to the point of ignoring eye contact, and seemed offended by the fact that we wanted to dump wines. Um hello, I went to responsibly taste, not get drunk. One would think the employees of this type of establishment would not only respect, but encourage this type of behavior. The wines all had the same minerality which was not my cup of tea, and I think combined with the bad service seemed to make them taste worse. On top of that, my CC was overcharged by a couple of dollars. Not sure whether my CC was confused with my friend's or if this was intentional, but either way unacceptable.
In short, if you don't really care about wine and just want to get drunk, this is your place. If you are a true taster, save your time and go down the street to Cornell, where the service and wines were outstanding. -

Last Saturday I went to Sip for the first time...absolutely loved it! 12 of us rented a van with a driver to celebrate our friend's birthday with a day of wine tasting. This was by far my favorite stop of the day.
Wonderful service...so attentive and friendly!
It's one of the most unique tasting rooms/wine bars that I've ever been to. The decor inside was a mix of rustic and rock 'n roll. Outside had a large patio with picnic tables and live music. We walked next door and bought grilled cheese sandwiches, corn dogs, and french fries to eat at the tables with the wines that we bought from inside. Such a GREAT place! I truly wish I didn't live so far from Malibu because I would visit MUCH more often.
Oh...and the wine was much better than I had expected. I only tasted whites which is abnormal for me. I remember the sweet white called Honey Pie being the one that I liked a lot. Since we weren't in a true wine producing area I thought I'd be disappointed...not at all. I'd recommend a visit here for anyone looking to do something a little different in the Los Angeles area! -

What a nice surprise as this place is practically in our backyard. The wines are really pretty good and the staff is also very personable. They also offer appetizers, and live music. Join their wine club and get free flights whenever you come in, which would pay for itself quick!
Parking could be tight, but w had no problem on a Sunday afternoon.

Discovered the perfect place for a lazy Sunday brunch in the canyons! Brunch at SIP is a relaxing and inexpensive way to end a busy weekend. Selections are limited to fluffy omelettes and breakfast burritos but they're made right there on the patio with fresh ingredients. Brunch is $9.99 and includes coffee, a generous mimosa and a gorgeous view. The staff is friendly and attentive, no obnoxious hungover lines and plenty of outdoor seating. Loved it!

This place was pretty fun. Went on a Saturday with the wife and had a great time. Got a bottle of Emilio Estevez's wine which was actually not bad at all...for the price. Pretty sure the tastings were $15 each for like 7 or 8 healthy pours. Probably had about two glasses of wine and gave a few bucks to the friendly and mostly good looking 30ish staff. Gotta hit it up next Saturday.

I had heard about SIP's Sunday brunch from a friend and have wanted to try it for some time now. This past weekend I did just that! $14.99 for your choice of omelette, burrito or scramble with your choices of ingredients along with sides and a mimosa.
I gotta say, they don't skimp on the mimosa either! They made them like I make them at home, which I have never seen anywhere (all champagne with a splash of OJ for color) haha
The live music was nice and mellow and the staff was all very friendly. Their brunch only goes until 12:30 and we had just made the cutoff. Right at 12:30 the music packs up and the place emptied, leaving me and my friend all alone on the gorgeous patio. Both of us surprised it was so empty!
We stayed for a glass of chardonney after breakfast and while it wasn't my favorite, it was refreshing on a HOT June day.
I would go back but earlier next time!
PS: They should change over the brunch to a BBQ during the afternoon to keep patrons there! ;) -

I've been a member almost since they opened, back then they had great friendly service, Sunday brunch, live music and lots of outside seating which helped make up for the expensive, but good wine. Then a lounge area was added on with a big TV screen which made it great when there was a game on. I took many of my friends there who became members. Since then the friendly service, lounge, live music, food and most of the outside seating has been taken away. I recently brought in a group of friends who had never been there, there was no seating available and the people behind the counter were very unfriendly, I was embarrassed and we all left. I would think since there are so few reasons to go there anymore they would really kick up the service and try to keep the members, but that is not the case at all. I will be ending my membership along with 3 of my friends. I am very disappointed.

I don't know what I'd do without The Sip! Every time we go, and we go often, it feels like a mini-vacation. It's so near, yet so far, from the craziness of L.A. Very Relaxing, friendly and beautiful. ** UPDATE ** 10.11.09
After my review below posted, the owner of SIP called to apologize for what transpired and agreed that how everything was handled was unprofessional. I feel he was genuine and felt bad that our experience was so poor and although it was too late to change what transpired, he offered what he could to make amends. Additionally, he promised the venue has learned a good lesson so others don't experience what we went through. I plan to return to SIP to put the negative experience behind me and give them another chance to shine brighter and enjoy their tasty wine. The venue is beautiful so I hope others get to enjoy it even though we couldn't for our event.
-------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------
9.16.09 Unprofessional, dishonest and disorganized! Sip Wine Bar at Cielo winery is the WORST place to hold an event unless you want to pay triple what was initially quoted. There are other great options to hold a private event at a Malibu winery so don't waste your time, energy and wine tasting on a place that says F-U to its patrons.
** BEWARE ** BEWARE **
Smart business people who open up a new place want good word of mouth to gain loyal customers. This place instead coaxes you in with verbal quotes to get you in the door, then switches when its convenient or they think they can get more money elsewhere.
The winery is new and clearly needs lessons in customer service and honorable business practices. I received a verbal quote for a rehearsal dinner event from Bill, the owner's brother. After we visit the winery and discuss details with the event planner Andrew, we got the runaround for days. The contract that came back was a slap in the face! All they do is point fingers at each other and shift blame but the reality is this place is a complete waste of time. They quote prices and don't honor them, they have horrible customer service and take days to call you back...I'm disgusted and will never go back. From the owner to the manager to event planner - this place SUCKS!! -

A very pleasant surprise on my way to Malibu when cutting over a little further north than I usually do off the 101. Super friendly and knowledgeable staff. Using their own grapes as well as some from other growers, they make their own wine which was quite good. I'm galaxies away from being a wine expert but I especially enjoyed their White Rabbit Chardonnay (2007 I think), which was refreshing but had a hint of caramel and smokiness. They offer a nice patio and you can also get cheese and nuts if you're a little hungry. This place provides a little taste (bad pun intended) of wine country that is worth a quick stop if you're in the area.
