Great hangout spot and nice atmosphere. Plenty of seats available and a small, yet cute upstairs area. The walls are adorned with local artists and there is a magazine rack of all sorts. The employee was friendly and patient (there were so many choices!)
The coffee was delicious and I can't wait to go back. I wouldn't recommend the food - it did look not-fresh and definitely a few days old. However, I never tried it - hence the 5 stars. Stick with the coffee and magazine and great people watching- and you couldn't feel more at home.
Since I am a chai person, I was sad to see that they only have one option...a regular chai. Upon purchasing my second, they offered to make it a gingerbread chai for me by adding flavored syrup.
The staff was very very very friendly and outgoing - making the place even warmer than it already was (on a brisk cold winter day....a great place to be).
The witty signs throughout the place encourage people to smile.
Each chair is different from the other, so regardless of the shape and size of your body, there's a chair here for you.
As for the free wifi ....it cut out numerous times, which was very frustrating. I had to keep getting up to have them reset it, which they did happily, but it was annoying.
I would definitely go back here...can't wait to come back in warmer months and hang out in their garden.
I have a confession to make: I don't drink coffee. Like, ever. People are pretty shocked when I tell them this and are quick to as a few very important questions:
- Yes, I've tried it. Yes, with cream. And sugar.
- It tastes OK. Doesn't really get me going.
- No, it's not a religious thing.
So as you can imagine, I don't get too jazzed about coffee shops. Up until I started working remotely I can honestly say that I can count on my right hand the number of coffee shops that I've been to in the last year, including the one I live above!
Anyhoo, in my new adventures of looking for free Wifi and need to be around people have led me to testing the coffee shop waters. And it was a good experience:
- Sip is pretty large, so there are places to sit and get 'er done
- They offer coffee alternatives, including a yummy hot apple cider
- No paper cups here, so pick a mug off the shelf and leave it at the counter when you're finished
- Clean bathrooms and friendly staff make you want to come back
Again, this was a positive experience and I look forward to exploring more coffee shops as a non-coffee drinker. More to come!
I always have a blast at this place. I also always come with three others after getting Italian subs at Graziano or Bari, and there's never enough space for us in the back, so we take the two tables in the front. The baristas have always been super nice, and gave me free coffee one day because my middle name was the name of the day. Good, strong coffee. Always 80's music in my experience. I'd love to sit on that special loft they have in the back, but someone's always bogarting.
Um, this place is adorable. Good decaf, great pumpkin bread, reasonable prices. And I enjoyed the music selection as well. Why would anyone go to the Starbucks across the street when they could hang at Sip instead?
Great coffee, good snacks and wonderfully pleasant service. I think they display local art pieces for sale too. I've never been disappointed and I go there at least twice a week.
What else can I say about Sip? It's great!
1. Their house coffee is about 4/5. I drink my coffee black with no sugar, and while it's not the best I've tasted, it's certainly in the top 10-20 percentile.
2. I have had no direct experience with their fancy coffee drinks, but my girlfriend says "Their chai latte is good, and I've had a lot of chai lattes."
3. As always, the most important aspect of any coffee shop is its atmosphere, and this is where Sip shines. Come alone for a relaxing break? Grab one of a hundred magazines to skim. Come with a small group of friends to catch up? Tons of seating available, particularly in their wonderful outdoor seating area. Come to do some studying or work? Free wi-fi! You can't ask for a better place to get caffeinated.
It's a pretty cafe that looks a bit like a loft apartment.. high ceilings, wood floors, and so on. I'm a tea drinker and got the Moroccan mint, which was tasty and pleasant. I like that they give you your own pot and let you choose from an assortment of mugs on the counter. I also liked the array of colorful magazines they have lining the corridor to the main sitting room (and on that note, it's a nice touch that the main room and the ordering room are separate, so you don't have to listen to the baristas taking orders as you work or read). They have very nice decor: lovely tables to work at and big comfy chairs to sip tea and read in.
Why only three stars? It's close to a four for me, but the food they had on display didn't look in the least bit appealing (it looked like refrigerated airport food, to be honest). That's not a dealbreaker though; coffee and tea at a coffee house are always more important than anything else on the menu. But the place lacks something... I really couldn't say what. Character, perhaps? The vibe was a little stodgy for my tastes, a little too "modern upper-crust." I wanted it to be a little more weird. And weird, it most certainly was not.
Great place. It's a cafe spot where a majority of the folks in it are usually working on laptops or reading books/magazines. Great ambiance and decent prices. I wills say that there is a peak time sometimes and you may not be able to get the best seat in the house. I do think during peak times they should have more than 1 barista.
If you are looking for a cool cafe, look no further.
This is my new favorite coffee house in Chicago. The coffee is good, the service is either friendly or indifferent (although oddly enough without attitude), but it's the setting I love. You have a choice between two outdoor areas as well as several nooks & crannies to park yourself indoors.
YEA! THAT'S RIGHT! It's like a straight up English Muffin in that joint!
You can usually find free parking on the streets somewhat easily. And as you can read in other people's reviews - free Wi-Fi! One of the main reasons I go there. Kicks ass.
This is my favorite coffee house of all time. I am just so lucky that it happens to be a block away from my house and right across the street from my work. The seating is comfortable, I've always been able to find somewhere to sit, and the music is always good. I've sat here for hours writing a paper, doing homework, reading a book or just surfing the internet. There's a million places to plug in a finicky or aging laptop, so nobody silently resents anybody else for bogarting the power outlets. As someone who has worked in restaurants and coffee shops for almost ten years, I HATE that guy who buys one cup of coffee and sits in a coffee shop taking up a seat and sucking up the free wi-fi for hours on end. That's why I make it a point to buy something new for every hour I sit on my ass, and that's where my only grievance comes in: there's not enough to eat! Even though I wish there was more food, I also know that there's only so much you can do with a tiny kitchen (or no kitchen at all? I've never really seen inside that little room). So I won't hold it against them. They're always there for me when I have to work at the crack of dawn. Although they close at the same time I get off work nowadays, so I never get to go in and sit around anymore, who can blame them? It's not like it's the most lucrative idea for a coffee house to be open any later in this neighborhood.
Sip has gotten me through many paper deadlines and out of the house those many times I could've been sitting around at home on the internet... but instead went there to be on the internet. =)
I'd give Sip ten stars if I could! I *adore* this place, it's just perfect.
- Wonderful ambiance. Bright and spacious with plenty of comfortable chairs and the radio always turned on to an awesome new wave station. Can't wait for summer so I can sit on their gorgeous outdoor patio!
- Excellent baristas. They are very sweet and accommodating, never had a complaint there.
- Last but not least... The food!!! Some of the best hummus and pitas I've ever had, and I'm a Middle Eastern food Nazi. I wish I knew who makes it, I'd like to have a supply at home at all times... It *might* be the owner, since she makes all the delicious, freshly baked goods, but I doubt it. Either way, it's really freakin' good. Especially with the perfectly toasted pitas... Mmmm. Heavenly.
- Always liked their coffee, WAY better & cheaper than Starfucks'. There's no reason to support a lame chain with a place like this in the area. They also offer other tasty drinks for non-coffee drinkers, such as San Pellegrino Aranciata. I wish this kind of soda was the standard in America, it's soooo superior to all our disgustingly oversweetened orange sodas!
I need a coffee house like this in my neighborhood!
BIG fan of this place. I'm probably the last person on the planet who does not have wireless at home. That's why I go to Sip... Way cooler then going to Starbucks. They are locally owned and reasonably priced. Pretty large and there are also two cute patios in the warmer months.
Why go to Starbucks across the street when you can support your local coffee shop? The staff is friendly, the coffee which i believe is Intelligentsia is incredible, the music is generally great, tons of room, lots of people hanging out on laptops, good atmosphere, plenty of food to choose from

Hello Yelpers, I've found my new favorite coffee shop!
The coffee: Sip uses Intelligentsia beans, which are quality, and they make a solid iced mocha. I will say that I haven't had anything else there yet (I've been wanting cold drinks since it's summer) but I expect their warmer drinks to be good too. This isn't the best coffee in the city, but it's good. There's an interesting comparison between Fair Trade (a certification) and Direct Trade (buying beans directly from the growers, which often means they pay growers a better wage) currently on the whiteboard as well. Intelligentsia is the latter.
The service: As a rule, the baristas are a friendly bunch.
The baked goods: It's a rare brownie that I think is even passable. Sip's brownies are simply good.
Atmosphere: This is where the cafe really shines. Go through the front room with the coffee bar, and Sip has a little outdoor courtyard, a spacious main room with a balcony/loft that you can also sit on, and a beautiful patio in the back with trees. (Watch out for the birds though - one narrowly missed pooping on my brother, and another one pooped on my laptop. No joke.) Sip feels like an airy, modern house, but one that is comfortable rather than pretentious. And they have free Wi-Fi, so what's not to love?
Sip is my new favorite coffeeshop (which seems to change with every great Chicago cafe discovery made). This is why I love Chicago- there are just so many amazing places to go!
Sip has everything needed for a quality cafe experience: great drinks, cute atmosphere, tasty baked goods, and free WIFI. I'm a big fan of the fact that there are a variety of settings that you can sit in, too. There's a lofted area, a darker inside nook, a large windowed space near the back area, and then my favorite part: the back porch. I had an incredibly relaxing and enjoyable time sipping my tea, eating my yogurt parfait out in perfect weather..
If only it was a little less of a walk from the Ashland pink line stop... Blue line folks are lucky to have this!
Sip is pretty much the model which I believe all coffee houses should strive for. Awesome comfortable spaces (of which there are several). Comfy couches and chairs for ambiance as well as tables and chairs suited more towards getting work done. The staff has absolutely no pretension and are pretty much some of the dopest people in the city. Free WI-FI (a must in my book), magazines and newspapers. You can either motivate yourself here or procrastinate in great ways! Only reason for the 4 stars is how often their internet goes out (we're depending on you Sip!). In conclusion, much love for Sip!
omg I love Sip!! It's my new favorite coffeeshop now, Yay. My fiance and I are were looking online for coffeeshops that were opened the morning of July 4th and we wanted to find a place with free wifi.
Sip is awesome. Not only because it has free wifi (I don't believe people should pay for wifi especially if you're a paying customer at a coffeeshop!) but the atmosphere is chill and laid back. We got coffee, breakfast baked goods, and parked ourselves with our laptops on the table. My muffin was huge and it was bigger than your ordinary muffin elsewhere. And my latte was just perfect.
They have a patio where you can sit outside and enjoy the Chicago summer. But inside, the tables with mismatched chairs are equally as inviting. I keep telling my fiance that we have to be back. And we sure will.
I really like this little coffeshop down on Grand right by where I work. They are a locally owned place with lots of sustainable coffee and snack choices at a fair price. They sell Intelligencia coffee and a nice assortment of teas. The banana bread is AMAZING..... I swear it must have crack in it.
They also have this fun thing where you get a free cup of coffee if your name is one of the 2- one lady and one gent- that they randomly chose for the day.
Very nice neighborhood coffee shop! The staff is friendly, and they are very nicely decorated, it gives you the feel you are in an artist's house. They even have hand lotion in the bathroom! Nice touch!
The coffee is very good, they have the nice outdoor space! Too bad winter is just around the corner! I love coming here once in a while, so do the same! Support the small, independent, locally owned business! They need it in this economy and they deserve it!
I go to Sip when my car is at the Car Rx up the street.
I wish I lived near this coffee shop. It is a brilliant coffee shop.
They know coffee, they know tea, they even sell my beloved San Pellagrino with orange juice.
The wi-fi is free. Real, genuine, actual, no security hoops to jump through, free.
My ONLY complaint, and the reason I didn't give Sip a 5 star rating, is that some of the furniture in the back room smells like a hobo slept on it the night before. Now, I understand that second hand, old furniture is going to have an oder. I don't care, I'm ok with that, honest. But this is a serious, feet that haven't been washed in weeks funk. I'm no advocate of Febreeze or anything else that just covers up stink with stink. But there has to be some kind of a steam cleaning situation that can be arranged.
Other than that, this place is the bomb diggity.
Lordy, lordy... this is my favorite coffeehouse ever! Seriously ever. Ever ever. I'm Yelping in real time - I'm here right now. Is that lame? Sort of. Do I love it? Yes!!!
The last time I was here around the same morning hour, there was NO one here. I'm pretty sure they had just recently opened, so their business has obviously picked up in the best way possible. Never too crowded, there's always room to sit and get on your laptop or gather with friends for tea and coffee.
I'm currently having a pot of Lychee tea (only $2 - awesome!) and it tastes like France. You know those tastes - they remind you of something that you remember very fondly. This taste reminds me of my lovely host mom, Montpellier, sipping tea at Café 1886... seriously this is the most amazing tea I have ever had. Thank you, Sip, for carrying teas outside of the standard selection (i.e. Earl Grey and Irish Breakfast). They have a ton of tea that isn't standard at most shops, even Argo! I even got to pick my own mug (everyone does!) and that makes me very happy. In that cozy, warm sort of way.
The colors (lots of purples, greens, neutral earthy tones) make this place feel super cozy even though the space is kind of large and industrial-ish. There's ample seating and a ton of people utilizing the free wifi. There's a nice, quaint garden outside of where I am right now for great seating and hanging out in the summer. I can't wait! I don't come to coffee shops very often, but I'm going to start driving here just to hang out and have a good morning with tea and my computer.

Thank you fellow Yelpers for all the prior reviews because this is truly a fantastic coffee shop with great service, an amazing ambiance, inexpensive and good selection of food and bevs. I am doing a tour of local coffee houses to try out new neighborhoods, support someone besides Starbucks, and vary up the daily routine, Am most definitely coming back to Sip!
Alright, so the first thing that caught my attention was the XM indie radio. I walk in (by the way be careful of the slope at the entrance! that shiz is dangerous!), anyway, sorry for the digression. Okay, I walk in, I immediately see a large selection of coffee (Intelligentsia, mind you!) and tea beverages.
My favorite is the black lychee tea. I come here just for it. The little tea pots are fun, and choosing a mug for yourself is very casual... which is pretty much the milieu of Sip. The crowd: 20ish/30ish/40ish. Yuppies and hipsters can co-exist in the space. What I love most is that Sip doesn't try too hard to be "cool." The crowd keeps themselves, but isn't pretentious nor are there overt "Sip groupies." You know those types; every coffeehouse has THOSE people.
I find I get a lot of work here despite the free wifi. Also, for some reason while the occasional 80s new wave piped into the room can be somewhat distracting, it's also fun. It makes me wanna wear skinny jeans (which I do already), and try to be a hipster/punk but I know I can't. I'm not "with it." Overall, my favorite place to study or chill this end of town.
Like so many others, I am reviewing Sip FROM Sip, thanks to their free and un-annoying wireless. No limit on your access. No stupid code to enter. Okay, so the tables aren't the most ergonomic thing ever, as they're a bit high, but that's not the most important thing, is it? (There are also couches galore).
I'm actually in good company here as well by having discovered Sip while my car was in Car Rx down the street. Sadly, there's a Starbucks between there and Sip, so I fear too many people don't make it up the street to the better coffee shop.
Sip make a mean cappuccino. That's all I can vouch for here, beverage-wise, because I doubt I'll ever deviate and get something else. It's June, and it's still cold in Chicago so why bother? The muffins are lovely, and there are many other baked goods, yogurt/granola parfaits, fruit salads, etc. You can get everything here from looseleaf tea to iced coffee, to the usual coffeehouse fare.
The space is lovely- 2 stories and lots of patio space. I love the two story exposed-brick wall with skylights and wood ceiling beams. Very ambient. Right now they have a series of paintings by kids hanging up. (Or, um, they might not be by kids... )
Let's be honest, Chicago lacks enough truly awesome cafes. Sip is among of the strongest coffee shops.
First of all, they brew Intelligentsia and their baristas are good at what they do.
They use mugs. If I have to drink delicious coffee through a plastic cup lid and smell paper one more time...
They have free, though not terribly reliable, wifi.
They have plenty of seating.
There are, though, a couple reasons Sip doesn't get five stars. I was disappointed by the limited food selection (thought the Brie Turkey Club was pretty good for a pre-fab sandwich). The music is usually awful, depending on who's working. They use a satellite radio service at a volume that is too high, and on stations that do not seem appropriate for their customer base. I've been about a half a dozen times, and I've never seen people doing anything but write, read, or chat quietly. I'm not so sure Fall Out Boy is the appropriate soundtrack for such activities.
Still, Sip has few coffee shop peers in the city.
Four Stars.
Sip is a great alternative to the Commercial coffee shop down the street...Sip serves Intelligentia teas and I got the White Tea w/Peach after trudging through our slushy snows recently. Sip isn't just going to give you a paper cup and shove you on your way out the door, they ask if you want it "for here" and if so, they'll serve it up in one of those little teapots that you can get like, three whole cups of tea out of! Nice touch!
The Sip space has lots of different places to hunker down with a magazine, laptop or have a nice conversation. They have free Wi-Fi and lots of people were taking advantage. Quiet music played while people worked or talked, and my friend and I did not get 'shushed' here! They've got great art on the walls and support local artists! And you should too! Support local tea and coffee artists, like Sip!
Sip Coffee House & Garden is mighty cool. Its an fun, hip, artsy place with comfy chaise lounges, sofas and arm chairs where you can sit, do homework, read or chat with friends.
The coffee isnt so bad either. I had their Cafe Au Lait for $3.50 and it was pretty good. Their baked goods arent the best(my scone was just EHH) but their coffee/expresso drinks are what I come to coffee houses for- my friends and I were happy with their drink options AND prices.
Probably the best part of Sip is the outside seating..........when I hear GARDEN I think lots of flowers(which they did not have) but they do have a chic outdoor patio with a huge tree, shrubs and little bird houses. SO CUTE! Parking wasnt too hard to find on a Friday afternoon, Im not sure how often I will be visiting Sip as there isnt really anything else in the area that appeals to me.
Its a cool little spot, and all of their "for here" mugs were different(like you were in a private home) which was just the perfect touch of cuteness.
Great place to study, especially on a rainy day. Clean, comfortable, with a 'living room' feel. Friendly staff and good internet service.
I had a fabulous vanilla latte and banana bread w/chocolate chips (homemade by the owner).
Can't wait to go back when the weather is nice to try the outdoor patio.
I looooooveee Sip.
It's friendly, has a great atmosphere and most people bring their laptops and books so it's an excellent place to get some work done. And I love that they have an impressive row of magazines to browse - thank you for providing me with access to Harper's and Glamour, mags I would read but never buy!
They also have a lovely courtyard area in the back where you can chill when the weather's warm (which means not this weekend, but soon i hope!).
Good coffee and good people.
I'm not a big coffee drinker, but when I'm in the mood, I prefer Sip to one of the many chain places around my office. I'm all about supporting the little guy.
The atmosphere here is great! I love that they have art from local artists on the walls and my friend even had a collaborative piece shown here. A very relaxed, artsy vibe with good coffee and a good amount of tables/space. I'd be here every day if I were a caffeine addict. Maybe I'll become one so I can visit Sip more often!
As a first-time visitor to Sip, it made me feel right at home. In fact, sitting there for the afternoon almost felt like hanging out at a friend's house.
Up front, the barista was friendly and accommodating, and I'm glad I took his recommendation of the homemade carrot ginger soup along with the Intelligentsia coffee, which was delicious.
In back, I was a bit worried about being able to find a place to sit, but our group ended up on a set of comfy couches overlooking a great patio that would be perfect on a sunny summer day. Free wifi was a big plus, too. Most of the patrons seemed to want to tune out the 80's channel piped in on the satellite radio, but it made for an appropriate soundtrack for studying on a dull winter day.
I'll definitely be back to Sip one day soon.
What a beautiful garden cafe! What a light and breezy space! Wait, am I in the city? On Grand near Ogden? Wowie!
Which is what I would have been saying had it been sunny, warm, pleasant and seasonal out. Well, it's seasonal as we're getting into fall, but right now it's rainy, gray and we have the remains of a hurricane hovering in our Chicago skies.
Sip nonetheless is somehow cozy. It's crowded though and the places to sit are a bit cutthroat (and me having my luck, I've landed next to the open-mouthed chewer, natch). The counter help is sweet, the coffee is cheap (a large is only $2.15) the space is open, sort of like someone's gut rehabbed living room. I suspect that the raised platform area the chair I rest on doubles as a stage, which is nice.
I'll be back one day before the weather really turns, and I'll sit outside. It's sort of walkable from the blue line if not a bit of a hike, forget the Grand bus if it ever shows up and parking can be brutal, despite all that it's made it onto the return list. Oh and free wifi. How could I forget?
...But seriously, have you ever sat next to someone that eats hummus with their mouth open? It's enough to make a person move to the next available seat pronto. And I will....
I am petitioning the owners of Sip Coffeehouse to let me live here.
No really, I want to move in.
They have a garden! I am sitting in it RIGHT NOW. It's beautiful. Ample tables private little area to bask in the glory of caffeine and sunshine amidst happy looking coffee/tea drinkers.
The decor. I'm seriously impressed...is it possible to be bold and comforting at the same time? Sip does it. It's like a house! But cooler, and with a coffee bar. And a garden. And tables. And chill people with computers. And my heart.
Check it out. One of the best coffee shops in Chicago, and some STELLAR wifi.
My iced coffee is lovely. Seriously, why do I live so far away from here and Star Lounge? Y'all have the best coffee places up 'round here...maybe I'll move? (No, not to Sip, but maybe close)
So, already mentioned the scone.
I also have to say that this time the music level was much better even if they are still stuck in the 80s (but I decided to be open-minded and not criticize!) Too bad I forgot my big hair and my leggings though...) We spent the afternoon up in the mezzanine with my friend and it was really good. They also have a whole bunch of magazines that you can read if you are bored, your companion doesn't have conversation or if you just want to read a magazine...very eclectic collection!

Nice cozy and clean interior, adequate plug availability for laptops and no-hassle free wi-fi. It can get a bit crowded but it's good so that's to be expected. Intelligentsia beans & decent food - I would like to see more food availability (like Efebos) but this is a coffee shop so that's not a big deal. The outdoor seating earns a fifth star for Sip.
Amazing coffee place! I have escaped here to work many times and it's always comfortable and not overcrowded and their coffee is fantastic. The atmosphere is what makes it so amazing--it's set up in a loft-type setting with tables and chairs but also couches and overstuffed chairs and such. It feels almost like you're in someone's apartment with only tables and chairs as furniture. They also have a great back patio but the inside is lit enough with natural light from the windows to feel like you're not being closed in. Their wifi bugs out every once in a while, but just ask someone to reset it and then it works just fine.
I've been looking for a neighborhood coffee spot, and to be honest Jupiter wasnt doing it for me.
Thanks for being inviting, knowing the difference between direct & fair trade, offering grape leaves and Intelligentsia coffee.... and being cute Sip. BFFS forever.
This place is absolutely pleasant. The staff is friendly, the coffee great, and there are two lovely patios. If only they hadn't played really, really great melancholy pop music on the XM radio-- the best chiming stuff of New Order, PiL, Wire, Replacements, etc... I don't need to be made tender, to remember loss and heartache, when I'm trying to read my Details magazine!
