I'm a fan! Singletons serves good, fresh, temperature hot seafood specials daily.
I picked the catch of the day, which was sheeps head on a bun. It came batter fried with the yummiest hush puppies & slaw.
Hubby had fried shrimp with a piece of fish broiled on the side.
No frills in this restaurant as it is a rustic old beach shack with indoor & outdoor seating that serves from styrofoam plates & plasticware. So guys, don't expect impressive looks on your first date if this is what you want to impress her with.
Sweet tea is fresh brewed & already comes in a styrofoam To go cup. Cheap eats--hot & fresh as it gets. mmmm!
Loved this place. They had some of the freshest seafood I have ever eaten in my life.
The hole in wall looking places are usually the ones that are the best to eat at.
You want fresh seafood? This is the place to be. Its literally a shack, but the food and the service were excellent. We sat outside because I liked looking at all the big and small ships pass by.
We ordered fresh Oysters, the fish of the day (sheep something), and a shrimp po'boy. All were delish!
Will come back here again most def.
Try their lunch specials ! Fresh prepared with huge portion. Friendly staffs too.
Just what I wanted. A basket with blackened shrimp, slaw, beans and rice and who can forget about the smoked fish dip!! I could eat that dip all day long. My BFF got the Snapper basket, so fresh and what a big piece of fish. The bill was $20 for my B.F and I, what a deal.
Go for Lunch they have great deals.
Cheap, fresh and delicious! Our server was nice and attentive. This place is a shack on the water and the food is wonderful, as fresh as it gets!!! We had the clam chowder, fried shrimp and grilled shrimp. I wished we were in Jacksonville longer so we could eat here again.
I went there again recently. The combo dinner I was describing has fried: clams, shrimp, oysters, fish and scallops. Also, hushpuppies, a couple stuffed crabs, and 2 sides. To me it's all equally really good, but I'm not much of an actual food critic. I can't think of any fried seafood I like better, though. A great way to finish it off is Key Lime pie, probably large enough to split between two people, and they won't hesitate to bring out 2 additional styrofoam plates to perpetuate the ecological farce.
Another interesting thing: Last time I was there I overheard a server telling a party that the guy from Man Vs. Food had been there.

My buddy Dave, a park ranger/archetypal Jimmy Buffet fan took me here years ago. Alright, well,… Read more »
OMG!!! this place is AMAZING!!! Husband and I ordered the combination plate for two that includes two crab cakes, fried fish, fried oysters, fried shrimp, hushpuppies, scallops and four sides , we got baked blackbeans and rice, french fries , baked potato, and coleslaw. We saw everybody ordering the sweet ice tea, so asked for that and it was perfect with our meal. everything was so fresh and delicious. At the end we only spent about 42 bucks including tip and had leftovers for breakfast and a lil' snack before lunch.
The Grand Ole Dam of Seafood Shacks...
Plato talked about "Forms" or the original article from which all things take their shape and form from up above us in the clouds. So there is "THE Book" and "The Tree" and yes this is the spitting image of The Seafood Shack. Many of the reviews say "dive" or "don't expect much." Well I've got news for you - it is just the way it is supposed to be. It is a place filled with local fisherman, Navy servicemen and servicewomen, and saavy seafood lovers from all over Jacksonville. Sitting here and watching the ferry come and go, seeing container cargo ships on their way to deliver their goods, and just soaking up the atmosphere - priceless.
Fresh Mayport shrimp - nothing better. The hushpuppies have the perfect crunchy exterior and tasty combination of flavors on the inside.
The servers are another treat. If you treat someone with respect and appreciation - you'll get treated like a King in return. I love the gals there and their service is always way above par. Thanks Ladies!
If you want good seafood, skip this place. Went there recently with the wife and tried the steamed scallops, clam chowder, crab burger and fried pickles. The only thing that didn't make me gag was the pickles. The chowder was salty enough to make my tongue sting, the scallops were mushy and bland, and the crab burger was nearly as salty as the chowder. I saw all the rave reviews on Yelp for this place, so I feel have to offer a counterpoint to keep people from wasting their time and money. You're probably better off eating at Captain D's or throwing some fish sticks in the oven. Even though the staff were very pleasant, the pickle chips alone are not worth a return trip.
I had some friends in from out of town and only limited time for lunch and sightseeing between picking them up at the airport and getting ready for an evening affair. I decided that some seafood in an authentic setting would be an appropriate choice, so after hearing so much about it, I decided to finally make my way to Singleton's.
What have I been waiting for?
Everything that's been said is true ... not much to look at, but very good and fresh food in what turned out to be a pleasant atmosphere. Fortunately I warned them in advance about the appearance, and I was bringing them there for the experience, not to be impressed or wined & dined.
Our server was attentive and helpful; when I asked about the soups, she recommended the Minorcan Clam Chowder (a spicy red-based stew), and it was amazingly good. I would go back just for that.
I regretted my decision to order the fried fish basket; the fish was fine and portion was good, but not nearly as memorable as the chowder or the famous Mayport shrimp fresh out of the water, or blackened mahi that my very pleased out-of-towners enjoyed.
Oh ... it's actually interesting how well the ducks and cats outside seem to get along, and all of course very friendly to anyone who they think may feed them!
Haha...Rosie (see her review) you'll be happy to know it's all just as you remembered. This place is a dump. A true shack in every sense of the word. It's ramshackle, it's dilapidated, it's infested with cats. When we rolled up, the Glabella's first response was the ask if we should leave. I'm more adventurous so we stayed.
I'm sure glad we did. She had the fried shrimp (of course) and I had grilled shrimp with grouper. It's served up on styrofoam plates and you get paper towels. The shrimp was the freshest and tastiest I've had in Jacksonville. You get plenty of it too. The fried shrimp had a light batter, not too thick or oily. The grilled shrimp was just that...grilled with a crispy outside.
Ther waitstaff was pleasant. One had a terrible cough that we hoped wasn't going to give us something. Prices were ok too, but for the setting, I'd have been happier paying a couple bucks less.
I'd go back, but it's not a place to take any snob you'd want to impress.
This place is the very definition of a dive restaurant. You will probably even drive by a few street walkers just to find the place. Awesome seafood (especially the blackened shrimp) and hush puppies. The tartar sauce sucks though. Southerners just can't comprehend that TARTar sauce is supposed to be TART. Not sweet. If it was supposed to be sweet it would be called SWEETar sauce. Extra fun bonus: watch the feral cats hunt stuff from your window seat.
This place is a trip. A Mayport institution. You should probably go there just to have gone there. It's a shack, but quite a large shack. OK, it's a full-size restaurant. Outside, there's a colony of feral cats and mallard ducks that hang out together by the front door. The parking lot is slick with guano. Inside, you look around and ask yourself, "Is that legal?" "Is that up to code?" "Does the health department know about that?" You get paper plates and plastic baskets and a roll of butcher paper that serves as tablecloth, placemats, napkins, whatever. They do seafood well (pre-veggie days for me), but my dining companion ordered a hamburger that looked like something from the elementary school cafeteria. When asked if it came with condiments, the waitress cheerfully pointed to a thing of cocktail sauce.
I haven't been there in ages, it's probably all different now, sigh.
Sunday late lunch was some OK Bloody Mary's, good smoked fish dip and tasty shrimp poor-boys w wonderful onion straws, It is a fish camp on the water next to the shrimp boat docks...Pelicans, seagulls and the ferry provide the entertainment. Few places better for laid back atmosphere. Skip the white clam chowder, they lost the supplier for base and the current is far too salty...Waitress was good enough to remove that from the bill as she agreed.
