A friend of mine moved into the Outer Richmond district having ascertained a few "must haves" to fit into the right neighborhood. Among the necessities were finding a good coffee place, a decent grocery store nearby, a dog park accessible by a mere jog or walk and if it could all fit in a picturesque surrounding- all the more better. The quaint little duplex was a few blocks from Golden Gate park, a Delano market and just a jog away to the beach! But one that surpassed the list was simply the most pleasurable: the neighborhood cafe.
On weekend visits when the sun was out or when the fog decided to stay for the remainder of the day, a nice brisk walk to this neighborhood cafe soon became a weekend favorite. One of my favorite stops along the way too- was a mom and pop's dim sum place- who knew dim sum and coffee could go so well together! (see following review).
This vivacious charming place can easily be a surfer's hang out after a day of riding waves or for the retirees who enjoyed perusing their daily newspaper while nursing their cup of joe. And if you were around just before 9 am it can also a rest stop for the lifeguards (who often drew peeks from behind the papers including ours).
The space is comfortable and cheerful... even non surfers can appreciate the cavalcade of Hokusai-ian waves roaming the front wall. The couch and chairs in the middle provide for a comfortable lounging area complete with an upright piano that yearns to be played. At the back a tad more quieter with wi-fi hook ups to start up your cyber communication. Time can meander through unnoticed like the tide that stranded the boats ashore (painting in the back).
I love coming here- where I believe if one came on a regular basis, their drinks as well as their names might just etch its way on the wooden tables and the memories of gregarious staff behind the counter. But of course one of the most enjoyable time passed here is for that cup of coffee-- it's simply one of the best in San Francisco. I don't know- perhaps it's the fog that helps chill it a bit on the way to the beach, or maybe just the way each bean was freshly roasted next door and ground for the morning drinkers--exuding all the natural oil and aroma sweetened with caramel and orchard tartness to meet you every sip.
PS- The counter looks a little piled up at times and the nearby sugar/milk station can get messy on busy weekends. Customers can help by cleaning after each use. Thank you :-)

Ever wonder what cafes were like in the 70s? Look no further than Simple Pleasures. It's about as close to the Carter era and green flag gas days as you'll find, and that's probably due in part to the fact it's been here as long as I can remember. But like your grandfather who still wears his ascot, but nevertheless keeps himself well-groomed, Simple Pleasures has evolved with the times in all the right ways complete with decent coffee and free-ish wifi with outlets for your laptop.
Simple Pleasures has a great selection of bagel-based sandwiches, regular sandwiches, and a few hot items, including soup and quiche. The large counter is pretty well packed with tempting (sometimes a little too tempting)sweets that go well with the great coffee, and you're to be congratulated if you can resist temptation and forgo these treats. On a sunny day the outside tables are terrific, but the back is where it's at for cozy, whether at an undersized table, or on one of the dilapidated sofas or chairs (think 70's dorm room chique with about the same level of cleanliness) which also appear to be vintage 70s relics. The place has some history...if that place could talk, sorta thing. ORD (that's outer Richmond district to you) locals/characters abound here and that lends to its charm.
This place is adorable and my fav of all the non-starbucks type places south of Sebastopol (Hardcore Coffee). The food is awesome and generous, the ambiance is funky and functional and the coffee is delish.
I'm not sure if they still do it, but on Monday nights they used to have jazz with "Monk's Bones" a piano trio that plays bop the way it was meant to be played; with love, care and a spirit of risk-taking... those guys: Chuck, Sam and Si are pros in the best sense of the word. What a bargain to see them for free!
I rated them 4 out of 5 because of the barista attitude issue. It's really the only thing I don't care for about this place and most local (hippie/non-corporate) coffee places. I know they mean well and are wonderful people who no doubt could be doing something that truly would bring out their potential if only the economy wasn't so bad (trust me I know), but come on ladies (for the most part), if another woman is your customer, she can taste your derision and it's being mentioned here and in other reviews. Remember sisters it's tough all over and even though you might think you have all of your customers sussed as snobs because we're not at that moment behind the counter, we would like to be on friendlier terms with you and our tips and smiles are the only way we can communicate that. All I ask is that you smile back and say thank you.
Do you appreciate a good cup of house roasted coffee? How about genuine local atmosphere? Perhaps you like local craft brews or free live music?
I buy my coffee there for $8.45/LB. I have tried just about every house roasted coffee in the city, and i can tell you that this is not just the best, but the cheapest too. If you like blue bottle, thats cool too. Your just ruining America. If you care about keeping some of the simple pleasures in life affordable then stop by and hang out or pick up a pound of the finest coffee available.
This cafe's been here a LONG time. On the one hand, it looks like it, but it's still the best place out in the avenues to sit, have a snack and read the paper.
This place is on my way to work and is the perfect cup of coffee to begin my day on. Strong and tasty.
The problem is the baristas. I go to this place about three times a week and not once has anyone offered friendly banter or any recognition of any kind. I don't expect starbucks style mania in all baristas, but a "have a nice day" goes a long way. I feel like I'm walking in there with food in my teeth or something by the way they treat me. They don't even speak to me except to tell me my total. And I tip every single time I go in there. Totally ridiculous. These people need to get over themselves, even if their coffee is good.

I came back to Simple Pleasure cafe this weekend for breakfast with an out of town friend while we were staying in the Outer Richmond. We ended up there around noon (okay, so it's a bit more like lunch) with the desire to coffee and something filling.
I ordered a double nonfat cappuccino, which was served in in a tall glass like a latte. No art and an airy foam that was not well incorporated with the espresso. It was not my favorite drink I've had. Along with this, I had the lox bagel. It came separated with tomatoes, red onion, cream cheese and lox on the side of a nicely toasted sesame bagel (they were out of all seeded).
However, the tomatoes were not terribly fresh and they skimped on the salmon. It tasted fine, but I would have loved capers or cucumbers or alfalfa sprouts or something to give texture and complexity.
Yet despite the sub par coffee, they alerted everyone to roving meter maids and had a wall of books, board games and cards. We got to read the newspaper and play a couple games of gin, which was a pretty nice way to start the morning.
I'd like it as a neighborhood place, but I probably will not make a special effort to return. However, it is great if you happen to be in the area.

I have long been in the market for a coffee shop where I can work on my laptop and where I don't feel like a selfish bastard for taking up a chair for several hours while I nurse one cup of coffee.
Since I live in the Outer Sunset, there aren't a lot of options. My favorite coffee shop is House of Coffee, but they don't have wifi, and there aren't very many tables. I can't stand Java Beach for various reasons, although I haven't tried the new location on Sloat.
So on my way back to the hood, I decided to stop off at Simple Pleasures. I've lived in the city for 12 years and for some reason I've never visited the place.
My verdict? Not bad.
Plusses:
- Power outlets for my laptop!
- Solid coffee
- Plenty of comfortable chairs and lots of tables
- The baked goods are good
- The baristas seem to know what they're doing and don't appear to be heroin addicts
- The bathrooms are clean. I didn't see an urine on the floor or on the walls
- An interesting selection of graffiti on the bathroom walls. I read a few things in there that may have changed my life.
- Board games and books to read
- The majority of the customers seem kind of cool.
- Wifi!
Minuses:
- They leaves the dairy products out on the counter, unrefrigerated. Not good.
- Plastic stirrers. Environmentally irresponsible.
- Open sugar containers. In a world full of less than healthy people, storing your sugar in open cambros is a very bad idea. Put the sweetness in shakers, okay?
- The music selection veered from good to horrible. I have a pretty open mind when it comes to audio, but this is San Francisco and there is NO excuse at all to EVER play Jimmy Buffett. EVER.
- Simple Pleasures has a slight hipster infestation. Castro caps are so 2004. Move on.
I could give this place more star love if they deal with the sugar and dairy issues. Jimmy Buffet will always suck, but I can always gouge out my eardrums when he comes on.
All in all, Simple Pleasures is a nice find and I will probably add it to the regular rotation.

I really love the atmo at Simple Pleasures, and their baked goods (!), but i find that the coffee drinks lack gusto.
I'll still go back, cause they have great teas, live music, big tables, outside patio, couches, and the best cellophane-wrapped cookie i've ever had : chocolate-dipped oatmeal something or other. Just ask for the best cookie they have, and they will know.

I understand the appeal that Simple Pleasures has. However, when I walked in wearing my work clothes (dress pants, dress top, the usual) I got judgemental looks. I got the vibe that "my- type", whatever that might be to Simple Pleasures employees, wasn't welcome. Maybe they thought I was too conformist or shallow. I just wanted a chai latte which I thought was on the overly spicy side. They gave me my drink with less than welcoming looks and I left right after. The drink went in the trash after a few displeasing sips.
However, when I was waiting in line I saw Chris Martin, the lead singer of cold play, pick up his order of an egg salad sandwich, then sit at one of the tables outside. Hopefully he had a better experience with Simple Pleasure than I did.
ALSO- The outdoor tables often times stick too far out into the side walk and make it difficult for pedestrians to walk by, surely it's some sort of violation. Kinda a damper on the neighborhood I love.

The food I have eaten here has always been fresh and delicious. The coffee is good, but I don't think it's the best in the city. I love the location and the vibe I get from the shop. There are some regulars there that are pretty friendly and willing to strike up a conversation.
As much as I LOVE this place, atmosphere, coffee, and food....I have to give it 4 stars because of the hit-or-miss service. I've been about a dozen times so far and have had maybe 3 mediocre experiences. Either nobody was at the counter for a good 5 minutes, or the girl at the register was not at all friendly. 75% isn't exactly good when it comes to customer service.
Hm...and people say that the baristas at Farley's are snobby! Here they don't say hello, don't listen when you order, then repeatedly ask you to repeat your order and then *still* get it wrong. How hard is "small iced mocha no whip"? Too bad b/c the place is cute with a wide menu selection, and, the coffee drinks are pretty good. However, the poor customer service isn't worth it.
Cozy Richmond neighborhood coffee house that keeps it real with organic beans as well as craft brewed beer on tap.
only place i could find Russian teacakes, my absolute fave! brings me back to my childhood, when my sweet elderly neighbor baked them for me, and took the long trek down the stairs of her house and up the stairs to my house to personally deliver them to Mum and me.
DOES ANYONE KNOW MARGARET WHITE?! her son took her and her lovely teacakes away from me and put her in a home, never to be found again... oh, sweet, sweet, Mrs. White!!!! she had white hair, and always wore a kerchief on her head. she was often seen wearing a khaki-colored trench coat with navy or black boat shoes.
they have live bands in the evening every now and then, and couches in the back. can't ask for more than that!
except, they serve booze! and food! and the cashier will correct your pronunciation of yerba mate. i mean, eer-bah mah-té.
oh, and they have wi-fi too.

this place is a totally undescribable terrifying place to be
white people on caffiene with hate for minorities, obsequies
minorites trying to please them and just utter lameness
i use to come in here about 3 years ago and just had to stop
when i heard one of the lame ass baristas listening to hootie and blowfish while talking about giving head to the other barista
total lames
tourists on permanent stay go back to jersey
It's far out there for me. But when I'm taking the pooch out to the beach, I always make sure to stop in for some coffee.
The ambiance is that "laid back" kind of feel, a fairly clean bathroom, good music heard and live music at times too. There's outdoor seating which is usually shared with the locals of the area.
I LOOOOOOOVE their bagels and cream cheese. It's a rarity for me to have, but OMG, when I do, theirs is the best:)

This is the Cafe Trieste of the Outer Richmond. Lots of locals and regulars and the occasional live jazz trio.
The good news is, going to Simple Pleasures does not require the masochism necessary to engage with the ridiculous attitude at Trieste everyday. The service at SP is friendly and more relaxed in that "It's all good" kind of way.
IT was a bit grimy the times I went. Maybe they can clean up or reupholster a few of their furniture items. I'm not a clean snob, but a few seating areas felt dirtier than Spec's in North Beach, if that's even possible. Well, whatever. The grimy thing must be part of the ambiance.
There's outdoor seating, good tea, and a relaxed atmosphere. For a good number of my Outer Richmond friends, SP is the default place to hang out.

I've been here only a few times but the service was friendly, even with a fairly large crowd. Nice atmosphere. I sat in the back with the random pieces of art hanging on the wall. It's a good place to hang out when the beach is unbearably cold.
Oh my, a coffee shop that has both amazing coffee and great customer service!? UNHEARD OF (at least in the case of Velo Rouge... Douche bags!).
I came in with extremely high expectations... Dae (I believe that's his name) had been talking it up like crazy at the Tee Off one night. I thought this to be a biased, drunken opinion... But then I experienced that delightful latte... And he was right, they make damn good lattes. Probably one of the best lattes I've had in the city.... And yes, even better than Blue Bottle's latte!
You see, when I get a latte, I don't want to go to the cream and sugar counter and put anything in it. A good latte should not require any additives. However, most of the lattes I get in the city need a little sugar added (probably because the beans are a bit burnt)... And for the most part, I deal with it... I've become accustomed to adding a bit of sugar into my lattes. So whatever, I deal because for the most part I do drink very tasty coffee (we're spoiled out here)!
But alas, I have found a place that does all the work for me... Making me a perfect latte, which of course makes me oh so happy (am I the only one out there that gets extremely happy after having a delicious cup of coffee?). So thank you Simple Pleasures for making me that perfect latte I've been searching for... And thank you Dae for talking up Simple Pleasures because you convinced me to go and now I love it!

Simple Pleasures put a smile on my face, as it transported me back to my old stomping grounds at Cal Berkeley. On and off campus, I used to find cafes, nooks and crannies that looked exactly like this place: mismatched furniture, weathered wood, old shelves with dusty games and books, newspapers strewn all over the coffee tables. It's not chic and fancy. It's simple and earthy...very hippie Berkeley kind of vibe.
The coffee is good (they roast their own beans a couple of doors down), wi-fi (thought it was free, but someone here said it's not), simple dishes, and really good pastries for about $2.50 a pop. They even serve a little alcohol here, which is a little funny for a neighborhood cafe. But like I said, it's kinda hippie in here, so I guess that's de rigeur.
As I sat there sipping my cafe mocha, I started reminiscing about the good old days...sorority events, trips to the library (for no good reason except to socialize), football games, peaceful protests, naked men streaking through campus. Good times.... :)

Havent been here for a while, but from what I remember, their coffee's delicious. When i went, it was during a time when I couldnt drink down a whole cup of coffee, but I finished it here. I had the caramel latte.
I really liked their cups and their artwork. They had various game boards for customers to use. There's outdoor seating for nice days. Nice service and lots of tempting treats on the counter. A great hang out for locals.

The fruit bowl with granola and yogurt is soooo good!
-Pleasant atmosphere; Vintage/antique looking interior
-Lines to the register go pretty quick
-Music a little higher volume than most cafes, but you can go to the back where its not as loud.
-Plenty of seats
-They serve unique beer
-Coffee isn't to die for, but is better than any other cafes in Richmond and goes well with their dishes.
-Staff is totally chill and open to chatting
Bottom line, this is a great place to go if you want to get out, relax and maybe get something to eat.
Where can you get a nice tall mug of chai latte and play scrabble with a bunch of your friends and listen to a live jazz band? well dear..at SIMPLE PLEASURES!! Awesome neighborhood joint with yummy pastries, expressos and tea! There is a small selection of board games and books, you can grab at the back and play with your friends! The staff are friendly and will come by and join a conversation or game.
I absolutely adore the quaintness of this place.
The coffee is nice and strong.
Great friendly environment.

Sometimes simple is good. This place definitely proves that. Smooth, organically-brewed coffee and other various fare served by friendly albeit a bit stoney staff . Here's a tip - order the ham and cheese croissant, but ask them to open it up and throw in some sliced tomato and avo. That'll cure what ails 'ya.
My go-to here is the poppy seed bagel, toasted with cream cheese, open-faced with sliced tomatoes. Add a pinch of salt and a dash of pepper, pair it with a creamy latte, and take it outside to enjoy in the sun (or fog) in the sleepy outer Rich.

I was told by friends that these guys had great coffee, and that the place was nice and laid back, but what I did not expect was to be INSULTED. The worst part is that I believe he is the owner of the joint.
Background: my parents were visiting me from a foreign country, they have a limited proficiency of the English language, but enough to get by. They wanted to get lunch nearby where I live and have a good cup of coffee with it.
Setting: slightly after 1:30 pm on a cloudy Thursday. No line.
What happen: We all made our order, paid for it, and then patiently stood nearby waiting for it to be handed over the counter. My father, who ordered, heard a yell coming from the preparation table, a lady's voice:
"WHAT KINDA DRESSING?'
He was a little confused, thinking ,"was that with me?" As quickly and as well as he could, he answered:
"no dressing, just olive oil and vinegar please."
The man who took our order, over my father's voice, replied to the lady:
"Just give him whatever"
Conclusion: my father was given a salad PURPOSEFULLY with the wrong dressing, and all that happened right in front of him.
I honestly don't know what that man was thinking, that my father would not understand what he had just done?
Honestly, I understand that being a clerk can drain one's patience, but there is no excuse to be rude to your clients.
Awful situation, it ruined our lunch!

Sometimes my mood can be the deciding factor between four or five stars. While spending a few hours at Simple Pleasures today, my mood was fantastic.
It could have been the really good chicken sandwich that satisfied my lunch cravings (for fellow olive haters, watch out, they pack some in). Or the pleasant cup of coffee I sipped while catching up on email. Perhaps the mound of goodness that constituted my parfait. It also could have been the not on the menu hummus on lettuce, which is something they gave to me when I overheard them touting their house hummus and asked for a sample. It was awesome - get this on your sandwich.
Beyond the food, it easily might have the abundance of outlets to enjoy the free internet (even though the znet login says two one hour sessions only, it's now been three and counting). Or the plethora of seating that enabled me to linger at a table by the window without feeling I was taking up space for someone else. It also could have been the constant movement of buses and people all around me that made this corner of the world feel alive.
And it also could have been the approaching Winter Music Conference, which just might be responsible for putting some extra flavor in my food, zip in my internet connection and all around lift in my spirits.
Whatever it was, my time at Simple Pleasures was a thoroughly enjoyable five star experience.

I'd like to update my review for the 3rd time, thank you.
No seriously. I've moved away from the Richmond and haven't been here in a while. Checked yelp to see if there's anything new going on with Simple and couldn't help but notice all of the comments on the vibe and the hippie, retro mentions. This place has a lot of local history, and there are regulars whose stories and character make you want to move out there and go to Simple everyday. This cafe is an unexplainable SF coffee experience, but I get a moreover artistic vibe.
Come one come all is my point. I'm a deep house music lover and I come here for the serious coffee, and all-inclusive atmosphere. I feel right at home listening to my French and British deep house tracks while sipping my Simple coffee.
I'm glad that there is a very noticeable artistic feel to this place. True creative folk work here, eat here, and come here to get work done.
As for the COFFEE AND FOOD: having grown up on my dad's home ground coffee made with a French press, I have to give Simple a big thumbs up for great flavor and a perfect roast.
And the hummus, oh the hummus. Comparable to hummus eaten in the Middle-East. They make it very well here at Simple, very well.
And lastly, one word: brownie.
The end.

This is my main main hangout. I'm hard to miss with my tie-dye wool cap, and my "No on 8" t-shirt that's fading away now. The coffee and all their sweets like muffins and cakes are very good. Maybe they can do a better job with bagel preparation. The atmoshpere is healthy. It's easy to meet up with friends or meet new ones here. It's a very indie, retro, goth, emo kinda place.
Yes you have to fork over 5 dullards for WiFi plus if you stay there a lot like I do, you'll get great musical performances by local musicians.

Simple Pleasures has a nice thrift-store like ambiance that is appealing--warm and cozy on a cold SF morning. The coffee is ok--not the best, not the worst. The problem is the staff.
Here is the interaction I had this morning around 8. I ordered 2 "tall" vanilla lattes. "tall" is a term that Starbucks and about half the other coffee houses in the world use. Not Simple Pleasures. The guy across the counter stared at me and said "we don't have that size here" as he arranged their 3 cups on the counter marked "small" "medium" and "large." Whoops! I said, "sorry, too used to starbucks," which received another glare and a "there's still time" comment.
My two vanilla lattes were served to me as two drip coffees. I looked at them and said "oh, I actually ordered 2 vanilla lattes." He looks down, puts the coffee back, makes me 1 vanilla latte and rings me up for it and some banana bread. The price was relatively high and I assumed he was making my second latte.
Nope. The second mistake was the fact he totally disregarded the second drink. When he started helping the person behind me, I realized that I wasn't getting the second drink. I waited till he was finished and said, "you know I ordered two drinks" to which he replied "i didn't ring that up" and waited for me to say I would pay for it.
At starbucks, the place he hates so much, they would give you the second drink for free after messing up your order twice. Do yourself a favor and go across the street to Zephyr where the coffee is good and the people actually know the definition of customer service,

This place really detracts from the neighborhood. I went inside, but soon left. The group that hangs around outside, some are regulars, smoking cigs, looks like a patetic bunch One mid fifties lady looks like a crack whore who was as the pay phone infront of Big Toines
screaming at someone ( the phone no longer works.
Sorry, but I won't patronize a business that attracts these kind of poople.
"I take pleasure in the details. You know... a quarter-pounder with cheese, those are good, the sky about ten minutes before it starts to rain, the moment where your laughter becomes a cackle..."
To which, Mr Hawke, I'd like to add: sitting on the edge of a continent, warming your hands on a hot latte glass while the fog blows all around you. Simple Pleasures, indeed.
But this isn't one of those bright-eyed Saturday morning spots for yuppie sybarites. No, this is that other kind of coffeehouse (what I'm pretty sure is the original kind), full of late-night studying, live jazz bands, and plenty of intelligentsi-angst. In short, the kind of coffee house from which revolutions are planned...if only they'd delete the Appassionata from their iPods. Me, I'll settle for one of their revolutionary coffee cakes, but I'm a bourgeois pig.
And Megan, you *can* have weekday lunch here in the summer--the hoodrats are on break.

My main goal is to find a good place to work from, hence I rate my establishments based on wifi connectivity, comfort and laptop friendliness and then everything else..
Pros:
1. Cool atmosphere
2. Good menu selection. Had the Bagel and lox which was quite tasty - though there have been very fex instances when I have ordered this from other places and have been disappointed.
3. Good coffee
Cons:
1. Does not take credit cards
2. Not many power connections for laptops
3. Can get crowded
4. The wifi came through the provider ZR Net which limited connection time to a maximum of two hours per day.
Overall, this isn't the ideal place to work from due to the limited time that you can be on the internet for but there was something about the atmosphere that made it feel homely and comfortable.

Yey! This place is replete with yummy tasty coffee, ample outlets, and comfy chairs. The staff manages to be helpful and efficient all at the same time, and the neighborhood is so delightfully quiet you could sleep all day if there were just less yummy tasty coffee.
NOTE TO SELF:
Lisa A. mentioned that the Paninis are great. I usually get breakfasty stuff, but I want to try something different, especially if it's that great.
NOTE 2: I heard that the Wifi is free here now, at least for a couple hours. I need to verify.
Will report back... To Be Continued...

This is a good coffee shoppe. The coffee and coffee drinks are very good and they will serve you your drink in a real glass if you ask for it. They also roast their own bean and it is affordable to buy good beans here and brew good coffee at home and work. I have not eaten much food here...the oats are good as I recall. Service is at least efficient, sometimes aloof. The only real drawback is the volume of the music which is often too loud in the mornings.
i'd probably stop in to get coffee here more if this one dude didn't work there/hang out outside all the time. seriously, if i see him, i walk back home, get in my car and drive to Peet's. the dude has dreadlocks, usually has some sort of do-rag on his dome and seems to utter some sort of douchey phrase like "go get 'em today, tiger" every time i go in there. one morning he was bragging/complaining to some lady in front of me that he was tired because he was out until 4am with his "rockstar" friends partying like a "rockstar." ugh.
however, there is a really cute filipino girl that works there who ALMOST makes up for this dude's whacked-out reality. and the coffee is pretty good.
