I'm not a big fan of waiting nor am I a big fan of hanging out around DTX after work but Silvertone is worth it.

I will jump on the mac and cheese bandwagon here saying that it's simplicity is what really wins for me.  That and the reasonable size AND price but it's the great little side salad that really ties the dish together for me.  You can eat your mac and cheese and get a few vitamins in from the salad.  Look mom, I'm healthy!

I've also enjoyed their salads which are served large but not obscenely so.  The summer salad is absolutely delicious dressed lightly with its goat cheese and pine nuts.  YUM!

Out of all the top spots in DTX I must say this is the tops for me, the people seem lees douchey than other spots and the music is on point.  Without fail I seem to hear Zero 7 whenever I am here and I am always happy with that.

Seriously though, it's about the mac and cheese.

I went to Silvertone for the first time the other day because I was starting to feel left out that all my friends have been there and I hadnt; and it seems to be sort of an institution here in the city.   So I got there, sat down at the bar, and ordered a Shipyard Prelude. (It scores a star just for that, I heart Maine microbrews :)  I was by myself for a few minutes, waiting for a friend, and I was happy to feel like this was the kind of bar that someone could just walk in and grab a beer by themselves and not feel uncomfortable that they were by themselves.
Its casual, with gaudy, vintage furnishings and a cool vibe. Its laid-back staff seem to be a good "fit"; exuding the relaxed personality of their workplace.

It does get a little cramped there; I was lucky enough to get a bar stool but they could use a few more stools along the back wall of the sectioned bar area.  Its a good place to meet a friend or two; I wouldnt bring a whole crowd there unless you reserve the private party room.

I can't comment on the taste of the food at Silvertone because I didnt order anything from the food menu.   However, I did  notice a few dishes passing through the bar and they looked like they were made with comfort-food love.  The 1/2 roasted chicken looked delish.  And the prices on the menu were so reasonable- beers are $4-5, Apps are $5-8, and entrees are between $10-15.  Maybe the prices are what makes this place so attractive to folks.    All around, pretty good, and super close to the T, so its a great meeting place for commuters not wanting to walk too far in this dead-of-winter weather.

Love the food...LOVE the food.  I do not like socializing here though bc the bar area is small.  I know there is a back room, but I tend to only stay in the front whenever I have gone here and its very close quarters UNLESS you are lucky enough to get a table.

I am a huge fan of the food here...mac and cheese, wings, the little cute salad that comes with the mac and cheese..... ITS SO GOOD.

I think this is a perfect place to go when you need comfort food.  The prices (well, at least when I was there last) were so affordable and the food has never changed!

I personally wouldn't go here to hang at the bar, but DEFINITELY to eat.

Excellent cocktail menu, french fries that could be mistaken for McDonald's (a GOOD thing, IMO), and an unremarkable grilled cheese. Solid place to meet up for casual cocktails or before a big night out. Subterranean atmosphere is a little strange.

Silvertone is the type of place that, when you leave, you're glad you went. I frequent this place at least 2 or 3 times a month and don't think I have ever had a bad experience. Be it lunch or after work drinks, the prices are reasonable, the food is delicious, and the place oozes good energy. The mac & cheese is particularly tasty, especially when you add grilled chicken.

They serve decent comfort food; I have yet to be blown away by any meal I've had there.

But it's a great little bar to meet friends after work.  I've been here twice on weeknights and it's never been too crowded.  Lots of State House or Downtown Crossing employees getting off work, sure, but it's never jammed to the rafters.  I've always been able to find a seat, order some food and chat up the people next to me.

Protip: it's not quite a perfect pour of Guinness, but it's closer than most bars get.  I ordered a Guinness while my two friends got ales.  The bartender had theirs immediately.  "Your Guinness will be ready in just a minute," he told me.  Of course it will.  You're supposed to let a Guinness stand.  But I'm not offended that he felt the need to warn me.  I'm offended that not every other bar in Boston knows that.  So I suppose I'm mad at you, not at Silvertone.  Damn you, Boston.  Damn you all to hell.

One of the more solid (if not spectacular) options around, Silvertone sports a great selection of well-made comfort food (both the mac and cheese and steak tips are delicious), a variety of wine, beer, and cocktail options (try one of the happy meals- a Miller High Life paired with one of a few shot options), and a funky, retro vibe. You may find yourself wishing that it was bigger, particularly during peak hours (when the already small bar feels that much smaller), but that's also part of its appeal. Silvertone probably isn't the type of place where I would spend an entire night, but it's a great option for lunch, drinks/food after work, or as a spot to kick off the night before venturing elsewhere.

My favorite first-date spot. The atmosphere, the food, and affordable prices all make this a stress-free choice for a first date. It's located right by the Park Street stop off of the red and green lines, so it's easy to meet up there. The bar is always pretty mobbed, but if you're in a small group of 2, you can usually get seated rather quickly.

They have a nice wine list that doesn't seen overblown, and the mac and cheese is AMAZING. It's the only thing I've ever ordered there! It's nice and cheddary, baked with a crumb topping. It comes with some greens, but they were nice enough to sub some steamed broccoli when I took a friend with Crohms disease there. The portion is big enough to take it home for lunch the following day. Two meals for the price of one!

I'm embarrassed to say it took me almost 2 years to try out Silvertone and I am a hardcore mac and cheese fanatic. I was so excited to finally go and see what it was all about.

It was very busy on a Friday night around 7, perhaps a mix from work people and whoever else. The guy manning the front said the hostess will be around shortly but they were at a wait right then. We got a drink at the bar then waited to see how long it would be. A very friendly woman came around and said she would get us in within a few minutes and she did.

A look at the menu I couldn't believe how cheap everything was. $8 for mac and cheese with a mixed green salad on the side? What a deal. I decided that would be my choice. Along with that we got the steamed mussels and the Long Island wings.

The server was fast to take our order and brought drinks out fast too, then food didn't seem to take long at all.

I thought the mac and cheese was 4 stars. It was a tab bit dryer then I like, however each bite was extra cheesy, the way that you pull it from the disk and the fork does that cheese string. I picked up mostly cheddar cheese in the sauce. The buttery bread crumbs on top was like the icing on the cake. It was even larger then I thought and afforded me another serving!

Mussels were a plentiful portion in a garlicky broth served with toast. They were delicious.

The wings were good. I can't say they were the Long Island kind cause they were pretty much buffalo tasting. I don't know for sure but we didn't say anything and ate them fast.

Service was on point the whole meal. Even the hostess came to check on us again.

The best part was drinks and dinner for 2 being like $40! I will surely hit up this place again

I tried Silvertone with a group of friends after reading others Yelp reviews. Upon entering I was immediately drawn to the fun and relaxing atmosphere that the vintage decor exudes.

The bar seemed classy but laid back. The music was bumping, however there was no a lot of room to dance. Its definitely a place to meet after work or class to catch up, and not a place for rowdy dance parties.

The dining room on the other hand was quite and relaxed. The waitress was friendly and took time to explain everything we questioned her about on the menu. The menu offers a lot of comfort foods. I chose turkey tips, which came with a delectable risotto and greens. It was satisfying, but not over the top or fantastic. On the other hand, the other girls who attended dinner with me ordered the mac and cheese, and were very happy with their decisions.

Aside from the food being average, the only part of my experience I was truly dissatisfied with was their wine selection. They have an extensive wine menu but have a limited selection of wines available by the glass. I think it would be beneficial for them to expand their selection to be purchased by the glass.

I can't say enough good things about this place.

I have eaten at countless places around Boston and I decided to check out this place with a friend last week. When we arrived there was nobody there to seat us and I experienced an overwhelming sense of dread at the thought this was an indication of what this place is really like.

Fortunately I was completely wrong. From the moment we were seated to the moment we left everything about the environment, the staff and most importantly food was nothing short of amazing.

I'm sporadic with compliments. I do not recommend a place highly unless it absolutely deserves it. My steak tips which came with a side of mashed potatoes and a green salad were perfect. I initially thought at substituting fries for my salad and that would have been a mistake. Everything about this dish was done perfect to the T.

In short I highly recommend this place and I can not wait to return for more food. My friend ordered a tuna sandwich and he claimed it was the best tuna sandwich he's ever had.

Can't go wrong with Silvertone and I look forward to spending many evenings with friends here.

I love this place.  Mac & Cheese in the winter, a G&T in a giant highball glass in the summer...Silvertone is an awesome venue any time of year.  The food is good, the atmosphere is fun and I love the location.

Last time we were here was for Saturday night dinner.  It was crowded and our waiter kept leaving the table when someone was in the middle of a request.  But our food came out fast and we eventually got everything we needed.

I don't love the no reservation policy but what can you do.

Overall, this place is fun at the right price point.  Go early & often.

I went here last night to celebrate my birthday with my girlfriends.  I waited with my friends at the bar for our table. I had a Shipyard beer and a delicious Dark and Stormy.  The Dark and Stormy was mixed to perfection and I felt a little tipsy after drinking it.  The hostess was friendly and seated us after we finished our drinks.  I ordered the Mac & Cheese with greens ($8).  I was stuffed and in a nice carb coma when I left.  I love this place!  It has never let me down.

I met friends here for dinner and drinks on Friday night. The bar was quite busy when we arrived at 8 pm and there was a bit of a wait for a table but out hostess was extremely friendly. Upon sitting down out waiter came over to get drink orders but disappeared once we were ready to order food. He seemed really busy as it was a bit of a crunch time. Unfortunately when the food came after an even longer wait two of the meals were completely incorrect. We received side salads to tide us over and the correct meals arrived in short order. In addition, they did not charge us for the incorrect meals. I was starving by the time I got my food (Turkey Tips) but I very much enjoyed it.
From what I saw Silvertone is an awesome place for a date as the meals are reasonable, the drinks yummy, and it is convenient for meeting in between the red and green line!!!
I will come back for sure and hopefully have a bit better luck next time.

Went here while meeting some friends in Boston downtown.  I loved the funky diner decor, the coat rack, and the warm atmosphere.  The service was friendly and, although not large, the menu had a good variety of things to choose from.  I was tempted to try the mac and cheese (my friend recommended it based on her other friends' experiences), but went for mussels.  The broth was a little more subtly flavored than I'd like but overall, they were cooked well.  A great little lunch spot!

This place confused me. The name makes it sound like a really hip, trendy place, but inside it's kinda like a dingy basement. Went a bit early for dinner, which was a good thing as it was crazy crowded around 615 or so.

No wait for a table which was nice.  I didn't get a drink, but my friend got the El Diablo, which she seemed to enjoy.

For meals, there is basic comfort food.  I was tempted by the grilled cheese with a cup of tomato soup, but chose to do the fish of the day: pan seared tilapia with grilled corn on the cob and roasted red pepper risotto (really yum!).  That was $15, and it was a BIG portion. My friend got the grilled cheese whcih came with fries.

I would go back again because there was a lot of good choices on the menu and they had reasonable prices.  The music, though, not so good--totally lite rock which did not fit the ambiance of the place.

The next best thing to Lucky's in South Boston.  Silvertone has that undeground, eclectic feel - a hidden gem that wants to be found.

The after-work rush is nice eye candy.  Women in biz skirts and tanks, removing their cardigans and men loosening their ties and messing up their hair for a couple of drinks.

My gripe is there are no reservations - eek!  We did have to wait an extra 20-30 minutes in the thin hallway that connects two sides.  the menu is filled with light comfort food.  They have fun drinks to sip while you wait and the staff can be a hit and miss.  The only reason I say this is they seem like they are in the weeds all the time and can be off kilted in their service.

But once 7:45pm hits on a weekday - it clears out a bit and it's quieter so you are not yelling at your friend across the booth.

I had the steak tips in long island marinade - very yummy because it was cooked perfectly at medium rare.  I scooped up the juicy bits with the fluffy not watery mashed potatoes.  I felt a little good about myself when it was served with fresh greens.

This is a great place to meet after work and can even be better to savor after the rush.

I really enjoy Silvertone.  Like, I don't want to make sweet, sweet love to Silvertone like Richard does, but I see it ending up in heavy rotation for me.

My first time there was a cpl of months ago, and I got a couple of drinks and didn't order food, which I still deeply regret to this day.  Cappy ordered meatloaf and it was really good and I ate some, aware of the fact that there would be bad jokes that followed me around for weeks because I ate someone's meatloaf.  It is delicious and the sauce is both light and salty and that sounds dirty too but it's really good.  The mashed potatoes don't excite me, but the green beans are really good too.

I went back for Sami's going away party and had an AMAZING dark n stormy of destruction that left me babbling to myself on the way home.  It's like $7 for a strong, delicious drink, so you really can't go wrong.  I ordered the meatloaf and this time Rich ate my meatloaf, so do what you want with that piece of information.  We ordered the wings as an appetizer and they are probably the best wings I have ever had, I am not a big wings eater but now I want some of those wings in my mouth right now.

Good stuff.

Standard American food done...standardly. Everything tastes/looks/is exactly how you'd expect it to taste/look/be, which can be hard to come by sometimes and is why I really enjoy this place. Huge bowl of chili with really cool chips on the side? Oozy grilled cheese? Perfectly crispy fries? Salad with delicious toppings? Done, and done well.

I've been here a bunch of times, but today, I learned something new. Silvertone doesn't have dessert, but for my birthday, they gave me a shot of raspberry vodka with lime (at lunch, no less). Apparently they infuse it themselves at the restaurant and use it in some of their cocktails. It was great, and I'm always impressed with anything homemade, especially in unexpected places.

Service is always great; staff are attentive without being annoying. Ambiance is nice, though it can get a little loud, being in a basement and all.

I'll be coming back for a raspberry vodka cocktail.

I'm breaking this review down into a few parts

Food:
Quite tasty. I had the jerk chicken, which was well spiced, though not painful (in other words, it could've used more kick), served with fried bananas on a bed of rice surrounded in a tabasco-butter sauce.  The bananas were the perfect counterpart to the spicy meat and sauce, and I was thoroughly satisfied with my meal

Drinks:
The beer was good, though they don't have a huge tap list.  The cocktails, which is what I thought I'd be raving about, were just so so. Everything was really heavy on the ice and quickly got watered down, or just wasn't that interesting to begin with.

Service:
Great. From the host letting us know there'd be a wait (they don't take reservations) to the bartender, to our waiter being very attentive without hovering, I felt well taken care of.

Ambiance:
This is the hardest part.  It's clear that Silvertone is trying to be cool with their 50s decor, and I admire them for it, but they didn't try very hard.  Trina's in Inman (which I know was their second try) does the 50s vibe much better. Decor looks like it came straight from a high school theater set, cheap and uninspired.

Overall, it was an okay experience, but I was really hoping for more.  I'll certainly be heading back to bring some other friends who have way too much love for mid-century stuff, and to give that oft-mentioned mac and cheese a try.

Went here on a date last week on a friday night. It was pretty busy and the two of had to wait about a half our for a seat. The wait however, was well worth it. Was it because the date went well or because the drinks and food went well with the atmosphere? Likely both.

This place gets a big boost from me for having wings that are rochester style. rochester style!

also the mac n cheese kicked ass. I'll be back.

I can't say much about the bar  here because I only came for dinner with friends, but I will say  that part of the equation is quite nice. Their menu consists of a lot of comfort food if that is what you're looking for. It's not earth shatteringly good food, but it's good enough. My entire table got the mac and cheese, which was a hit. I like that it comes with a side of mixed greens so you don't feel so bad about finishing off the whole bowl of cheesy, calorie packed goodness. They've got cheap beers, and a small but nice selection of wines by the glass. Prices were good, so overall this is a nice little spot for some comfort food in downtown. The bar side of the place seemed to be hopping, so it seems like it would be a good place to go out for drinks also.

Mac and cheese, mac and cheese....I want more garlic sauce on my quesadilla please.

I've been to Silvertone twice, and have loved it. The pricing is amazing considering you're eating in downtown, and the food is very good. Great vibe, not so great service, but this place is ALWAYS packed, so can't really blame them.

The burgers are pretty decent, our drunk friend walked in grabbed a burger half and practically made love to it, so I suppose that's quite a testament.

The shepard's pie is really good, but I've had better.

The quesdilla has this strange garlic aioli on top that is sooo garlicky, your breath be kickin', but dayum it's worth it.

NOW the macaroni is downright fantastic. I typically like a creamier mac and cheese, but this is the perfect balance of creamy and cheesy. The buttered bread crumbs on top make it just delectable.

As usual, I'd like to place a little disclaimer:  I did not have a drink or have anything to eat here.  I would have liked to spend my money at this location, but before I could do so, I ran into a very big turn-off...which leads straight into my review.

Dear Silvertone,

I went in to visit you on a Saturday night around 7pm.  I was looking to blow off some steam with several of my friends in the usual way~ booze, food, lots of talking, and more booze.  I'd heard very good things about you, and even got a recommendation to visit you from a bartender at a local bar near my house.  Bars that receive bartender recommendations are almost always awesome!

So it was with anticipation that I went to visit you.  When we were approached by the hostess, we informed her of our starving situation, and that three of us were here and two more were walking from the T.  I was in a friendly mood, and I could see several very empty tables that could comfortably fit five.  However, your hostess was having a bad day where the proverbial bear did a number two into her bowl of cheerios that she accidently left in the woods that morning.  Although we were friendly and i teasingly asked if we could just sit down, since we were going to definitely eat, your little hostess completely doused me in cold water when she flatly refused to seat me and told me to get back to her when the whole party was together.

I contemplated buying a drink.  I really did.  But all my friendly goodwill towards you completely disappeared.  I understand if it was the policy not seat customers until the party was all there.  I understand that you may have had a bad day.  But a polite smile and a regretful sorry would have worked much better than the flat out no with the look of utter contempt that clashed dreadfully with your blonde hair.

Sorry Silvertone, I don't think I'll be visiting you anytime in the near future, and I doubt I'll be spreading the word among my classmates either.  And I had so looked forward to your jerk chicken w/ friend bananas!

I had a great late-night dinner at Silvertone a couple weeks ago. The atmosphere was perfect for catching up/getting to know new friends.

I had  the grilled cheese, which was pretty standard, but my friends got the Mac and Cheese, which was absolutely delicious!

The waitstaff was very friendly and ever-willing to replenish our drinks.
I will definitely be back here for a homestyle meal in the near future.

Great place, very affordable and very nice. Can come here on a date or with a group of people. Muscles are delicious if you like them def get them for an appetizer.  Salmon with the hoison sauce is a great entree, my friends had the steak tips and the steak with sweet potato fries and said both were excellent.  Bar area gets a little crowded so I don't really recommend it to hang out for drinks but for lunch/dinner it is a great spot.  Have martinis that are great too! Love this place!

Without a doubt this is my favorite place to grab a bite either pre or post catching a movie at the Lowes Cinema.

Great vibe, fabulous comfort food and tasty cocktails.  Sometimes the service is only ok, but the convience and price totally make up for it.  Especially since it sometimes feels like you need to take out a loan to go to the movies.

The turkey tips are my fave, but I also get the tuna melt frequently.  And they have the BEST pickles ev-ah!

The only thing keeping them from 5 stars is that it can get crowded and the wait for tables can be a while.

That being said, this is one of my favorite places in Boston. The food is really good for the price with the standouts being the steak tips, shepards pie, and the mac and cheese. The bar tenders are great and the  bar is well stocked with better than your average fare. Located next to Park st makes it the perfect dinner place before heading out to the bars, although some nights we never made it out and just stayed at our table the whole night.

So I've reconsidered my review of Silvertone after having lunch here with Cory H.  I think it was the Mac and Cheese that put this place over the top.  Oh my, that stuff is outstanding!

Wait at lunch wasn't too long, as the hostess got us to our seats within minutes of us getting to the restaurant.  And then, YAAAY!   The cheese was incredible, the bread crumbs were bready-y, and the macaroni was perfect.  All in all, a perfect mix of cheesiness and gooiness, with some salad on the side to balance everyone off.

Overall, service was excellent, so along with the incredible macaroni, I decided to bump my review up.  They also have good mixed drinks, as I recall correctly.

I would not have known about this place if it weren't for my yelp friends! I went here the other night, and had a nice time! At first, I had a hard time deciding what to order because everything on the menu looked good. My friends recommended the Rochester chicken wings. They were some of the best wings I have ever had, but I think the bleu cheese is really the reason people order them. (Do they offer that to-go?) I also tried the Shepard's pie- it was exactly the tasty & filling comfort food I needed! As for the atmosphere, I agree, this place feels very similar to Lucky's in Southie. It's dark, retro, & kinda romantic. Great place to go for drinks with a date! :)

I was pleasantly surprised by my lunch at Silvertone.  Meeting up with a couple of friends/old co workers for lunch here, I had no knowledge of this place other than seeing the sign and walking by, ignoring it many times on the way to and from work, for years.

Laid back atmosphere with some interesting vintage decor all around, this underground place is certainly interesting, with a whole lot more room than I expected before going in.  The menu is pretty simple with some comfort food and allegedly good steak tips.  I got the mac and cheese, and it was fantastic, some bread crumbs on the top and a side of greens to go with it, it was certainly tasty.  My friend got buffalo wings, and let me try one for Yelp purposes, and those were also pretty nice.  The beer selection is good and the service was really friendly and quick.

I enjoyed it and would go back.  Next trip here will include either the grilled cheese or the steak tips.

First of all, I have to thank John L. for choosing this place to meet up for lunch.  I have walked by it many times and never thought to check it out.  It's more spacious inside than it appears on the outside and we didn't have to wait long for a table.  I love it's retro/diner/dive vibe.

Secondly, this place has the BEST mac and cheese.  It was warm and really cheddary with bread crumbs on top.  And it came with a really delicious salad on the side, which made me feel better about eating a huge ramekin of mac and cheese.  And for $8, it is quite a lot of food and a really good deal.

Went there after work on a Monday to meet a friend for drinks. I knew vaguely where it was, but didn't realize it was in the basement. That, on top of the poor lighting would make for a cool hang out if it were last call on a Saturday, but under these circumstances it just made me squint and stumble my way in.

Bonus points to the bar for having hooks underneath it to hang up bags, coats, umbrellas, small children on leashes, etc. Clutch play.

I ordered a tanqueray and tonic - strong and delicious. Negative points to the bar for refusing to change the tv channel from the US Open to the Pats opening game. Sure, it was Federer but this was the first game of the season.

Being a mac'n'cheese connoisseur, I had to order it -especially with all the glowing reviews. He ordered the spaghetti bolognese. The food came surprisingly quickly, and piping hot as well. It was gooey and cheesy, solidly delicious. I also appreciated the fact that it came with some mixed greens, as if eating vegetables could cancel out the previously consumed glorious fats and carbs.

Overall, Silvertone is like that guy you once knew in college - dependable for many things but nothing to write home about.

I had heard about this place for so long but I never went. That all changed a few months ago and now it's a regular hangout down town (with  afew buts). The drinks are solid and the food is delicious. Mac and Cheese has to be in my top 5 M&C's in Boston. The downside, they don't have a clue how to pour a Guinness, a 16 ounce glass in one pour is NOT how to EVER pour a Guinness. That is a 2 star penalty for sure. It can also get very crowded and ordering a drink from the bar can be a royal pain in the ass and take some time.

5 friends and I went here last night to celebrate a birthday.

The food was a knockout - halibut with polenta and red pepper sauce was great, as was my friends' steak tips dinner, the marinade is amazing with a little bit of spice to it.  Great wine list, I browsed the mixed drink list, and it looked very interesting

It got crowded fast, and they do not take reservations, but I will be back soon.

I must say that I was completely surprised... but very pleasantly so. I went here with an old friend for her birthday dinner/drinks. Now, in list form, here are all of the assumptions I made before coming here and how Silvertone shattered them...

1. I figured it was Saturday night in Downtown Crossing and the red line was teeming with tourists on my way over: I figured this place would be PACKED to the gils and we would have to wait standing elbow-to-elbow at the bar before they could seat us
       - This was just not the case. After we walked down the stairs a       waitress quickly scooped us up and took us to a little corner booth.

2. I saw the price of the cocktails and figured cocktails priced a third
less than most nice downtown bars meant that the drinks would be really watered down.
        - Also, no true at all. The Raspberry Martini I ordered was not only very tasty and were much stronger than I expected, the raspberry vodka was made in-house. YAY!

3. Honestly, how good could the food really be based on the low prices?
         -  The answer is: FANTASTIC. My friend and I split the goat cheese crostini, the steamed mussels, and the cold peanut sauce lomein with chicken. All were having us giggling and licking the plates clean.

4. I figured that because the decor was kind of arty-cool with all of the red, black and white and the cool old photos that the people that worked there would be a bunch of pretentious snots.
         - Our waitress literally could not have been sweeter. She was so helpful in helping us pick the best things off the menu and was always quick to make sure we didn't need anything.
