Review from Jen R.
Los Angeles, CA
I went to this place today, it was awesome! Very cool stuff. Supun was super helpful and nice. I was looking at chandeliers and he pointed some out to me, and even wired one up and plugged it in to show me it worked. He was very nice! I will definitely be back here, they have great old housewares and original things that could be cool for houses, especially older LA houses.

OK, people, you have to start thinking about buying and reusing what is already in the world.
Go see Tommy or Cev and they will help you find a mortise lock, glass doorknob, 1920s floor lamp, Miele washer/dryer combo or any other household treasure with a past.
Home Depot is great and all but if you live in a beautiful old apartment in Los Angeles (of which I know there are many, I had two pre-40s era) and something original to the era needs replacing it's cheaper and better to go to the Salvage yard.
It's heartbreaking when your ding-dong landlord wants to tear out the cabinet grade fir door in your apartment with the solid brass peephole and replace it with some P.O.S pre-fab off-gassing factory-finished door from Home Depot.
Or the worst...replace rose brass and pressed glass door hardware with the cheapest bright "brass" knob he can find at the Ferreteria. He'll have to rip out the mortise lock and he'll curse at having to drill a giant hole in a door that's older than he is and it will be UGLY.
Oh and while I'm here.
Stop painting sash windows shut!
Stop painting hinges...oh the many hinges I have saved from suffocation...Bakelight handles covered in 17 coats of cheap off-white paint.? Not on my watch.
What's wrong with people??
I'm on a rant...I'll stop. Apologies all around.
Where was I?
These guys have the door or hardware or towel rack or whatever you need.
These guys are helpful, they have expert knowledge and above all are kind and courteous.
Say you're like me, and you have a few ideas because you moved to a loft and you need to build a few necessities like say, a kitchen.
They have cabinets!
And they are full of creative ideas like turning jalousie windows into bathroom shelving.
That's thinking outside of the box!
Their prices are so fair (you hear that, Liz's Antique hardware?) and they'll even let you trade in your amazing vintage whatnots for store credit (their discretion, of course).
I've been to a few Salvage yards in town and by far, these guys are the best.
So use what's in the world already.
Future generations will thank you.Listed in: Experts

tried to go in the other day and was shut down by the owner( i think it was him). They closed a few minutes early and he was kinda surly.
Hmmm. So much for raving about their good service. Their employees are nice but the owner, Bruce, not so much.1 Previous Review: Show all »

A gem. An absolute gem. When you visit a place like this it really puts into focus the amount of crap Home Depot is selling. They offer a wonderful product at cut-rate prices. Windows, doors, vintage stoves, post office boxes, chandeliers, hardware. You name it. It's here.
The service is wonderful. I bought my bookcase there with the help of MatJames. The bookcase I bought had a cracked glass pane and they not only offered to replace it for a very reasonable fee but said that it would be ready the next morning.
The following is a description of the Pallazzo Bellagio door at Home Depot. I added this to my review because there is a plethora of salvaged solid wood doors with true charm and beauty to be found at Silverlake Salvage. I'll get back to my point. Just read below.
------Palazzo Series Moulded Panel Door features distinct raised moulding combined with unique high-definition panel profiles. Palazzo's raised moulding introduces architectural accents like no other door. Both designs make a grand impression and add elegance and sophistication to any room.
I'm quite certain that a generic big box store offering mass produced products should not be throwing around descriptors such as 'grand', 'elegance' or 'sophistication'. Silverlake Salvage, with their unique offerings, can claim those words. Unlike Home Depot, I doubt that they would ever try so hard to sell themselves. -

This place has rows and rows of old doors and windows, plus lots of hardware, sinks, etc. Really cool stuff if you like vintage and original stuff. We bought several doors here when remodeling a 1920's home. The guy that helped us was really nice and really put in the effort to help us find the right size and style. We got 2 doors for $70 each, which I thought was pretty good, and one for $50 since it had some slight damage. The only bummer was that a lot of the stuff didn't have the price or measurements written on it, so it could be a little slow to go through it all. But overall I was really impressed with the selection and service.

While this place may seem worthwhile on the surface, in fact the owner, Bruce, knowingly buys stolen material lifted from construction sites, sometimes even from homes in Silverlake itself. He was a named participant in the sale of materials stolen from multiple sites on the same street late last year.
Salvage is either a wonderful thing, or a shady business a step above being a black marketeer. Put this in the last category. This business violates the basic tenets and trust of community and should be closed.Comment from Bruce B. of Silverlake Salvage 7/4/2010

I bought a cabinet mirror door that i turned into a full length mirror and gave it to my fiance' as a birthday gift. She loved it and the price was better than a 100 dollar cheap mirror from Target. There are lots of things here, I found an old Dental X Ray View box. The guy practically gave it to me. Great customer service.

The selection is pretty good here, although I think the prices are a little too high on some things. Staff is friendly, but unwilling to negotiate at all. Meh.

This place is awesome. They have so many beautiful items - rows and rows of antique doors, windows - all shapes and sizes. Porcelain sinks, wooden built-ins, hardware, you name it. I think the prices are certainly reasonable, and the people who work there are really friendly. They spent over an hour helping me find the exact door I was looking for, while my three tired and cranky little children made a fuss. I really love this place and I am so happy to have found it - it is a real salvage yard, as opposed to some storefronts who call themselves salvage yards, but are in reality over-priced antique shops. Go to Silverlake Salvage - if you want to find quality vintage pieces at decent prices, you won't be disappointed!

to XA Bruce has never knowingly puchased stolen merchandise. Any shop that buy salvage material is always on the lookout for stolen items and will work with homeowners, police, or whoever it takes to keep the business legitimate. Read the other post, people are always lamenting the fact that their neighbors, landlords, relatives, etc, are taking out vintage items from vintage buildings to "upgrade" them. Not everyone gets it , that it is very difficult to create that wonderful ambiance of a vintage dwelling, once it has been ravaged by uneducated or thoughtless people. Unless you have positive proof that someone has knowingly bought stolen merchadise, you have no right to besmirch the reputation of a much needed business in our community. Bruce, keep up the good work.
