For the money is was very nice. Good Location. Large Room and Large beds. No hair dryer though :-(

We got the hearst castle package and we had a good time. To be honest, out of all the hotels and motels on this little strip this one actually looks the nicest.

My girlfriend and I stayed here about a year ago when we drove down from San Francisco to meet some friends who drove up from LA.  I picked this motel based on yelp reviews and was not disappointed.  The room was pretty clean, the courtyard was nice enough, and the price was right.  I'm not sure how some of the other reviewers got rooms for as cheap as $39, but at $60 (which is roughly what we paid) it was still a pretty good deal, especially considering that the beach is right across the highway.

The real luck about ending up at Silver Surf, though, was its proximity to another hotel a couple of doors down on the access road where the hotel bar has Saturday night karaoke.  The crowd that got together (and seemed to do so regularly) to sing Elvis, Latin pop, Bon Jovi, country western classics, "My Sharona," and everything in between is an incredibly diverse and interesting one, reflecting both the central coast's demographics and its position as a stop over point for domestic weekend travelers like my group and international ones.

So if you end up at Silver Surf on a Saturday night, be sure to track down the karaoke a couple of motels down.  It's worth checking out and participating in if you're not afraid to be upstaged by a 70 year old man in cowboy boots.

Hey, can I be the Human Torch? Can I...Can I? I want to toast my own marshmallows without a match.

Oh wait, it's the Silver Surf Motel, not the Silver Surfer Motel. Damn. No wonder none of the staff was wearing silver body paint. Actually, this motel doesn't remind me of "The Fantastic Four"...it reminds me of "No Country for Old Men". Remember when Josh Brolin's character hides the satchel of money in the air duct in that 60's-style motor lodge in Del Rio, Texas. I swear the Silver Surf bears a striking resemblance to that motel. I kept worrying that Javier Bardem was going to break the door down with that freaky captive bolt pistol of his. His Herman's Hermits haircut was scary enough.

But no, it wasn't that exciting here. There was just a group of rowdy classic car owners who made noise for about a half-hour in the next room. Otherwise it was a quiet place, one of those row of motels you see in a burp of a town we all know as San Simeon, smack dab on Hwy 1 on the way to Hearst Castle. Our double queen room (how appropriate) had clean sheets, a fridge that didn't work, and cable TV that did. We didn't get ambitious and try the microwave oven. Hey, I may reproduce...it could happen. The bathroom looked renovated and was quite clean. The floral bedspreads and pillow shams had the worn look you'd expect in a motel.

Dog lovers seem to love this place since there is a huge lawn area in the middle (see my photo). I heard tell of a pool, but it was too chilly to consider even in July. Speaking of which, rates over the 4th of July were on the high side - $139, but you can get much lower rates during the colder months. If you are looking for an affordable place to leave your toothbrush while going for the 8am tour at Hearst Castle, you could do worse than this place. A whole lot worse. Consider that Motel 6 is just down the stretch.

I'm upgrading my rating to 4 stars, basically for value.  I've stayed here 4 times.

Location - good -- 5 min walk to beach.
Friendliness of staff - good.  leave you alone.
Value - pretty cheap, like $85 bucks on weekends
Cleanliness - very clean
Rooms-- pretty simple, about like motel 6.  small TV and refrigerator.
Beds--old, could be upgraded
Hot tub/pool - not super posh, but, very functional and just the right temperature
Walls/Quietness -- pretty thin, but, I think this place is a little on the older side

If you're crimped on cash, this place works.  Pretty dang good value.

$39. No, I am not kidding, $39. My husband, doggie, and I took a drive up highway 1 on the way to visit my family in SF for Christmas. We hoped to stay in Big Sur but couldn't find any place that allowed us to bring our dog. We nervously booked a room at the Silver Surf Motel. We were expecting ghetto-meets-thrift store scabies.
We were pleasantly surprised. The room was clean w/ a TV, coffee maker, free wireless, indoor pool, and a little lawn area with benches. The beach is right across the road, we could hear the ocean from our window.  There were plenty of places to eat in Cambria (5-10 minute drive).  If I paid $100 I would have given it two stars, but for the price -- we were pleasantly surprised.

Really, not a bad place to stay for the money.

We were headed home from a nice visit to San Francisco. We chose this
motel after looking at the AAA travel book. As mentioned in a previous review, the bed cover is faded, the beds are hard, the decor
out dated, but.....the price is right.

The grass area is beautiful, the staff friendly and acommodating.

Our room smelled a little musty, but we opened the windows for a while and aired out the room - no problem.

The windows could use a sheer curtain, so the fish-bowl atmosphere isn't so bothersome when the curtains are drawn.

We heard coyotes at night and I looked out the bathroom window to see if I could glimpse them and I just happened to catch a racoon scrambling up a pine tree - probably trying to avoid becoming a coyote supper. It was cool.

I would say this motel is average. Nothing outstanding, but very pleasant.

Would get a 5th star had the TV been a tad bit bigger, but hey, I don't go on vacation to watch TV.  I was quite busy walking to the beach across the road and to the many restraunts in the area.  Very affordable motel and pretty decent for the price.  I didn't expect it, but you can hear the ocean from your room at night, very nice.  I suggest their Hearst Castle package.  Rooms are very clean too!

Very affordable place to stay. Most rooms have a balcony with a view of the ocean, although some views are obstructed. Beautiful gardens to walk thru. Basic, but clean accomodations, most rooms come with fridge & micro. Will definately stay here again.
