I am a beach snob. I grew up near the ocean, so moving to the middle of Connecticut nearly killed me. I've been to several beaches in CT, including the most popular ones, but Silver Sands is hands down one of the best beaches I have ever been to.
First, and most important, YOU DON'T HAVE TO PAY FOR PARKING!! I've yet to find another beach in CT where that is the case.
Second, they have port-o-potties!
Other awesome things:
-It is very well maintained--both the beaches themselves and the boardwalk area
-It is the first CT beach I've been to without massive jellyfish everywhere.
-There's no ridiculous bars or stores on the beach or loud music or any of that crap. It's just a beach with a nice boardwalk and gorgeous marsh area surrounding it.
-There are several sections of the beach that you can chose to set up shop on.
-The sand bar opens twice a day, and you can walk to Charles Island. Through the ocean. WHAT? Nature is crazy.
-If you are lucky, the ice cream truck will come by the parking lot and you can buy yourself a choco-taco & all will be right with the world. -

Went for a stroll with the parental units today... a nice boardwalk, quiet even though it was crowded. Benches for resting and stopping to enjoy the water. Free parking which was super!
The walk is well maintained. Don't recommend walking to Charles Island unless you absolutely, positively know the tides schedule and even then it is risky. Stay on land and take some pics. -

Nice park that is well maintained. I heard from some long time residents of the town, that it wasn't always this nice, and it has come a long way.
A great place to brown bag it, on a lunch away from the office and great place to unwind after work!
Note: The gravel walkways are not the best place to practice jump kicks, due to the poor footing. You may end up with minor concussion. Thanks for the reminder Jenny! **blush**Listed in: Favorite Places, Work lunch rotation

I like this park just fine, but I'm not quite ready to wax poetic.
If you're on foot or bike, you can enter from the neighborhood on the east edge. If you're in a car, you can't; I guess you have to go in by an entrance on Rt 1. Inside the park there's a short, overgrown bit of road that, again, for walkers or bikers, sort of connects two parts of the park. Or maybe it's two separate parks. But it's not a huge space by any means. Still, it's a nice stop on our south-of-New Haven bike ride.
My in-laws stayed a hotel nearby and didn't care for the park all that much. But they're in-laws.
And last time I was there, I was on my bike, coasting along with helmet on, following all known traffic laws and some guy yelled at me to get off the road. He was just irate because he'd made a wrong turn while looking for parking, but still. We're in a park. I'm on a bike. Deal.Listed in: Inedible Delights

Great park for a walk or bike ride. Only four stars because there's no real "loop" yet , unless you walk on the sand. I'd rather not go on the sand unless I was staying there on the beach for the day. The beach is the nicest I've seen in the area, I like the more natural setting verses other beaches along Milford and West Haven. Getting out to Charles Island during low tide is a great little adventure if you have kids to entertain.
FYI, looks like they're expanding the "boardwalk", so I'll get my loop :) -

You will never in your life meet a human more grafted to a spot on this earth as I am to the beaches of Milford. This is in my blood down to the marrow. I can still see crystal clear in my mind the first time I rode my bike down to "East Broadway" and thought I had just stepped into a "Springsteen " album come to life. It was a rougher more bohemian place then. All ramshackle and rowdy , filled with colorfull thick skinned ,big hearted beach folk . It seemed like destiny that I would meet my best friend here .Tales of Glory soon piled high "Were gonna need a bigger boat". (RIP Frankie)
I left for the Badlands of New Mexico . One night I dreamed I was walking the beach with a beautiful girl with tan legs and wearing a pair of orange shorts. The dream recessed with time as they do and i never told a soul. Then a sunset stroll with my Wife , smooth tan thighs and a pair of orange shorts.
She gave me a daughter blessed by the Gods. The water used to be dirty , greasy , dead fish on the shore . Today Kingfisher birds dive into the waves to eat their fill. I walk into my chest and can see my feet.
and the young Goddess grows.
There are some who love the city and it's manic energy . There are those who find peace in the crisp mountain air . Here I have found ,made & lost my share of love and I'm thankful for it all.
There were hard times when we had no money and it would have been easier to leave . Instead we dug in deeper where the roots hold strong.
I have celebrated life's joys here and found healing when the world was merciless and cruel
This is sacred ground and I walk it's shores with the laughing ghosts of all her summers past and one day may they cast my forever warm ashes back into that loving embrace. -

The new boardwalk from Silver Sands Beach to Walnut Beach is incredible. It is wide and easily accessible. We went their on Palm Sunday, there were a lot of people out enjoying a great windy spring day. The boardwalk is wide with places to pause and take in the view. The people were polite and friendly. The dogs were well behaved. Great place to spend a Sunday afternoon.

I came here a couple of times when I lived in CT. It's quiet, clean, and a great place to contemplate...stuff. I only visited the beach facing the island of birds, but every time I came it was just fine. Nothing stellar. I never came in the summer when I'm sure the beach was filled with people tanning and wading, but if you're looking for an alternative to a town park and want some alone time, Silver Sands is perfect.
