6 reviews for Sign Hill Park
I've been wanting to climb the "SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO THE INDUSTRIAL CITY" sign forever and finally did. You enter at Sign Hill Park, a small park on Popular Ave @ Rocca Ave. It's in a residential area & FREE street parking is available on Popular & Rocca Ave.
No bathrooms.
To get to the letters take the Letters Trail .2 mi. The letters are made of concrete and you can tell that others have been there because there's glass bottle & cardboard for sliding. We didn't slide, but we did take lots of pics and stood on the letters. The letters are 60 ft high & 10 ft wide so when you're up close you can't get any great pics of the words really.
Two benches at the top, we also saw the Electric Christmas tree - They light them up day after Thanksgiving-Jan 6.
We also took the Seubert Trail .36 to the Eucalytus Loop trail .27 - it was ok.
Iris Hill Trail goes to the top - saw a trail sign for it at the bottom & top.
Worth going at least once.
No doubt that there are magnificent views if you get there on a good day, or before the fog rolls in. But, the amount of broken glass and garbage made the overall visit unpleasant, especially since I was scared my dogs paws would get cut.
WARNING TICK CENTRAL! We brought our dogs, and ended up spending that night searching for ticks after I found one on my leg. We then found 1 more on our little 15 pounder, and 2 more on our 120 pounder. I know big discrepancy, but it's like George and Lennie from Of Mice and Men (quick, witty Chihuahua/Terrier mutt, and big, clunky German Shepherd).
In short, go for a quick walk (wouldn't really call this a hike) up to the letters, snap some shots and leave, and don't forget to check for ticks before getting in the car. Oh ya, don't bring your precious pups!
A friend and I came here a couple weeks ago with the intent of sliding down one of the big letters that gives this place its namesake. We stopped by the Burger King in downtown San Francisco to pick up a plastic tray before heading off on the BART. Unfortunately I forgot to bring a map, so we could only navigate by keeping the hill in our sights, but with bikes, daylight, and local knowledge, it wasn't too bad.
We hiked up a ways and ran into a couple suspicious looking characters, who turned out to be really friendly. It's almost as if they went up there to jump somebody, but came to an epiphany while immersed in nature and decided to do no more evil. Or maybe they were just too blazed to do anything...who knows really.
Sliding down the letters turned out to be more challenging then expected because of the uneveness of the concrete. Without a good way to control direction, it was easy to veer off course into the dirt. Still, I could tell that with the right terrain and technique it was possible to pick up some serious speed. It's essential to use a tray, and not say, cardboard, because the concrete is not as slick as a proper slide. I had the most success going down the "T" in Industrial. It starts off nice and steep, but levels out at the junction. The "I" in Francisco isn't bad either, but there's no runout at the bottom and it's pretty steep. The key is using your feet as rudders, similar to how you'd turn a rowboat by paddling on one side, except here we're braking. Next time I'm also going to experiement with skateboard wax to see if I can decrease friction even further.
Overall, not a bad way to spend a dreary Monday afternoon.
A brilliant beginner's hiking trail. I'm not much of a walker/hiker myself but this was just the right steepness and length for a quick weekend or afternoon hike. It took me about 1 hour to climb all the way to the top and down. I just street parked which was fine. I'd definitely do it again.
Sign Hill Park has a couple miles of hiking trials. You can enter from Mountain Road or Poplar Ave. There's a small parking lot with about 6 spaces at the Mountain Road entrance. There are usually only a few cars at most. If you enter from Poplar, you can find street parking. People come here to walk their dogs or go for a short hike.
Ever see the giant lit Christmas tree in SSF? It's on top of Sign Hill Park. Currently there's the number 100 lit up every night, celebrating 100 years of SSF being incorporated.
Walk a little further and you have a great view of San Bruno Mountain State Park, the water, and south city. You can also see the SF airport and airplanes taking off and landing.
If you take the sign hill trail (about 2 miles round trip), you'll come across the huge letters on the mountainside, which reads, SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO THE INDUSTRIAL CITY. The letters are made of concrete and sit flush with the hillside. It's fun to climb up there and stand on the letter.
3.5... round up to 4 i guess.....
So I dragged like 5 other friends with me this weekend to come up with me on this mini hike.... I had no idea I could hike up here!!!
C'mon... how many people do you know that's been at the top of those letters!?!?! None!!!
Although the entrance of the trails smells like piss, and it starts behind some random folks' houses, the trail started out kinda slow. And the mountain looked puny from the parking lot. Its actually kind of surprising how close you can get to the mountain just by your car. I was totally not impressed at first b/c I didn't feel like I was in the wilderness, I felt like I was in someone's back yard. The terrain SUCKS. they pretty much sprinkled these tiny stone gravel pebbles on top of the beaten path, I don't know why, b/c it makes it SUPER hard to climb when it gets steep since you're feet are slipping from those little pebbles. There are some parts of this trail where it gets really windy since there's no protection from the wind. It's pretty much out there one its own. So we first took the sign hill trail, then it took us to the ridge trail? Then to some other trail, and basically took us full circle up and around the mountain. The big letters were kind of anti climatic, since there was so much dried up grass it was kind of hard to see the letters, and its super steep, so it was kind of hard to take the cool pictures that I had in my mind.
But all in all, it ended up being a decent hike considering I drove like all of 15 minutes to this location versus the 1 hr I drove to mt Diablo. It was kind of cold, so you def have to go on a day where the weather is nothing less than perfect to get the full enjoyment of the view of ssf. I saw the 100 sign at the top, theres also a bench were you can sit, part of the hike was paved road, and also my favorite part of the hike was actually this one huge flower bush, that kind of created this tunnel over the trail. It had tons of these beautiful yellow flowers. Def good picture op.
def something you want to do at least once! i don't know if i'll be up at this particular trail again. i like the other side of this mountain better. much longer trail and AWESOME panoramic view.
Not much of a hike... it was more like a mini adventure. Afterwards we wanted to just veg, so we went to eggettes and then went to tanforan to watch iron man! HA!!!
