As much as I love Iowa Meat Farms, I consider Siesel's the rich BBQ sauce on the steak!! They have all the great selections of meat, poultry, fish, etc as Iowa - along with a FANTASTIC deli area!!
Working on a catering project, I had plenty of time to study what this shop offers. Having sampled their potato salad, cole slaw, and German potato salad (and they have many other sides and desserts to offer in the deli area), I came away feeling there was no way to go wrong here!
In addition to having a fabulous display of meats, etc, Siesel's will prep it for you any way you want it (well, I was told just about any way - we all have our limitations!). They have a smoker in the shop as well.
Now, with a specialty shop like this, you can expect the prices to run higher. It is true here but the important thing is that the taste and value are synonymous with Siesel's and I have no doubt you will be pleased that you chose them for your special occasion, etc.
Like Iowa, if you're looking for a fantastic grill, Siesel's sells the innovative Traeger grills - AND they are more than worth the price of admission!! You can't go wrong with one of these (see my Iowa Meat Farms review for Traeger grills)!!
You'll find fabulous foods and service at Siesel's! I'm already a regular! I have to be. I found the best all-time soda in the history of mankind in one of their coolers - Vernors!! They got it right!!
RECOMMEND: VERY HIGH
Absolutely the best meat we've found in San Diego, with the "butchers with an attitude" vibe thrown in for free. The store was recently remodeled, and the new layout is a heck of an upgrade.
There's an extra benefit for shopping during the weekends. They put out a sampler table with a wonderful assortment of chips and dips, and most folks don't leave the store hungry!
My only word of caution: you probably want to shop there *after* you've hit a mainstream market. The prices are a bit high (in line with specialty shops), and it's a silly place to buy staples.
And not to insult a group of folks with sharp knives, the staff at Siesel's are very nice and helpful. Regulars are noticed and appreciated.
I have completely lost all confidence in Siesel's.
I go to this place a few times a month since I live in the Bay park area and every time it's the same thing, Im speaking for the employees who work the deli, they are very incompetent and unfriendly, I really cant remember the last time they got my order completely correct.
For example today I call and order a tuna sandwich with lettuce and tomatoes mayo and mustard, I also ask if they can make and egg and cheese on a croissant, the woman on the phone goes I guess I can do that in the most careless tone in her voice.
I get home open my sandwich and I find no lettuce, no tomatoes, and no mayo or mustard. SHOCKER!! Im done with Siesel's never again!! You guys lost a customer... This is the 5th or 6th time this has happened and its unacceptable. The manager didn't give a shit when I talked to him. So here I am making sure people know about their horrible customer service and attention to detail.
Get a new deli staff that can write down a freaking order and follow it and maybe just maybe ill think of ever going back or recommending it to someone.
Great neighborhood spot. Great meats and deli sandwiches. The staff is friendly and extremely attentive which is why I dont mind spending a little more for the service and quality of the products that they sell.
I'm giving these guys a four.
Great selection of upper shelf type product. Obvisouly and especially the MEAT. mmmmmmmmmmmmMEAT!
I don't know why they try and sell fish what with the place next store with the really good stuff...but oh well.
Siesel's is a great place to just walk around for a bit and pick out some fresh food to make for dinner or lunch. It's not really a place to do your "shopping"....
I'd give the place 5 stars...but the service is kind of iffy....and the music they play in there is horrid. I would be suprised if some of the meat wasn't trying to get out of there on its own after having to be tortured by the 80's bad pop playlist...or whatever the heck it is....
I'll definatly be going back...like I said..the meat and product is good...service not so much...(for example...don't put a big pink star on a product that says "50% OFF MARKED PRICE" and then go ahead and mark the item with the sale price...it only creates confusion. lol
If it wasn't for Siesels maybe my spaghetti wouln't have come out so good the other day...lol CHEERS!
I go to Siesel's for their meat shop and frozen Julian Pie Company pies. Since they're located so far away from my home, I usually only make it down there for extra special barbeques and holiday meals. My most frequently purchased items are beef chuck roast (Guinness beef stew is the best), ground round, bratwurst and Italian sausage... all winners. While they may not have fresh Julian pies anymore (haven't seen them in stock for awhile), I prefer the frozen ones because the scent of freshly baked apple pie is among the best to have in your home. They might not be the best stocked grocery, but they're probably the best neighborhood meat shop around.
I am no cook, but I felt like a badass Chef-in-the-know upon walking into Siesel's.
This place has quite a rep amongst cooking enthusiasts and I can see why. Great selection, great quality and helpful people. Will definitely be back.
Bonus point....love being able to get some fresh, chopped-up cow femurs for the Rottie!
Clara Peller once said "Where's the beef?"
I say --- Where's the beef jerky????"
Part of the ritual of going to Siesel's/ was being tempted and ultimately succumbing to the beef jerky at the register. When I stopped by today I was confronted with a new layout, spiffy new counters, new registers, and NO BEEF JERKY!! - I asked where is it and the lady says "It's over by the meat counter. How do they expect to sell any beef jerky if they aren't tempting you on the way out. Cohen's - Listen Up! - No one wants beef jerky at the meat counter! Put it back where it belongs and bring order to the universe!
Hands down not even a question the best steaks you can buy in San Diego, period.
As people have said, it's a throwback to those old school butcher shops we all used to go to as kids. Gruff guys talking shit, attitude, etc.
Not just steaks here, but damn good carne asada, roasts, sausage, chorizo, pollo adobado, pollo boracho, seafood, everything.
Do you like to get your meat wo/man-handled?
Do you like to play hide the sausage?
Do you want meat in your taco?
Do you like your meat hot and juicy?
Whether you like the dark meat or the white meat, Seisel's is the place to go, you can't beat their meat...It's a butcher shop, what the Hell were you thinking? Jeeze, get your minds out of the gutter people...I can't take you anywhere.
Seisel's is an old-school butcher shop in Bay Park that has an awesome selection of fish, poultry, lamb, pork and of course beef. Their Prime Dry Aged steaks looked amazing but considerably pricey. They have a small frozen section with more specialized meats like quail, pigeon, and other fun things like Scrapple. Scrapple is disgusting and I would never recommend it, but Seisel's has it if you want it.
They have more than a great butcher counter at Seisel's though. Their grocery section holds fine wines, condiments, pickled vegetables, chips, fresh produce, cheeses, desserts and freshly made dips. FYI, the blue cheese dip is incredible!
Their deli counter is great too. We got two Torpedo sandwiches there today. GOOD LAWD THAT WAS A GOOD SAMMICH! Mortadella, bologna, salami, shredded lettuce, tomato, mustard, mayo and oil and vinegar on a fresh french roll. We ate outside at the little picnic tables and couldn't even finish our sammies. Cool, we'll have leftovers for later!
Meat is AWESOME.
I got a BBQ for christmas and have been test driving it with lesser steaks for a few weeks to dial in my grilling techniques specific to my new Weber. Anyhow, I finally was able to prepare a New York Strip to a point where I would have rated it the second best steak I'd ever had (#1 being the graduation porterhouse at Morton's, see review). That being said, I felt I was ready for my call up to the majors and started researching butcher shops around the area.
I hit up Siesel's because, I have heard nothing but good things about it, and it didn't hurt that it was close to my house. I piched up 2 Prime T-Bones, which looked more like Porterhouses, but that is a good thing if you know your way around a steak. They ran a total of ~$65 which is pretty damn reasonable for a big ass slab of prime (I want to say about $22/lb).
This place is well stocked in all grades and also has chicken, sausages, marinated stuff, as well as various canisters of potato salad, onion dip, and what not.
Solid experience, I'll be back.
L-O-V-E this market and butcher. We are a big grillin' family and always get our meats here. Their meat quality and selection can't be beat and they have a huge assortment of sauces and rubs. We also have an annual hog roast event and they prep the piggy for us and do a beautiful job!
I cannot overstate this. Siesel's is the best place to get meat in San Diego.
They boast not only the best variety of cuts, they have the best variety of grades of meat. Yes, that means you can choose between choice or prime Rib-eye steaks. It is simply great. The prices are certainly fair for the quality.
Siesel's can serve as a one stop shop, but their produce is mostly conventional, and the variety is limited. Nevertheless, who is gonna complain about the fact their baked potatoes aren't organic, when they are eating unbelievably good meat? Not me. And my dinner guests better not be either!! They also have a great seafood selection. The fish generally looks to be fresh and, again, the variety is there as well. Also, check out their bbq sauces. Unless you are making your own, you can grab some seriously good ones that you can't find elsewhere.
My one recommendation, make sure you get butcher over 35 to help you at the meat counter. The young guys are either hitting the bong in the walk-in, or they are just simply a little slow. In any case, getting a "professional" butcher certainly helps.
I know for some people, Siesel's may seem like a drive. I assure you, it's worth it (read the review people!). And the great upside of the drive, is you have an excuse to stop off at High Dive Bar (it's about .25 miles south of Siesel's on Morena), grab a pint, and then proceed to Siesel's.
DISCLAIMER: This review is a natural product. The minor inconsistencies in spelling and grammar only enhance its distinct character and are in no way to be considered flaws or defects.
I'd give them a 5 if they would sell fish...they have a great place next door that does.
Aside from that that I am always pleased with what meats I find here, as well as the suggestions on preparing it!!!FAB FAB FAB.
Also I have been longing for some green beans not to find any decent ones at either of my 2 local grocers...BUT I did here!! also the head of lettuce was fantastic too!
I gotta start shopping here more, and maybe they will stock up on some more goods for me to buy.
Another 5 Star review, this means if you haven't been here then your missing out! My family has been going to Siesel's since I was just a twinkle in my father's eye. Although it's location puts it a little out of the way for my liking, it's worth the drive. This place is a real throwback style butcher shop and market. with great customer service and quality.
I stopped eating beef and pork a while back but this place still makes me drool, even if it's over the home made ambrosia salad, cucumber dip, or salsa's. Not the largest store but it covers all the bases. I would recommend this place as the best pre BBQ stop that I know of.
The marinades, people, quality of food and reliability of Siesel's is unmatched in SD County. Visit, grab a number, and get ready to rumble.
Best meat in San Diego!!!
'nough said.
Does anyone know how to give YOURSELF stars? If so, I'd rate my performance at this market with about a ZERO. I wasn't prepared when I went to the meat counter... of course, there aren't any prices listed - ANYWHERE - so when I asked for our Xmas tenderloin, and was asked in reply "hey, you want it trimmed?", I just nodded like a sheep (okay, a carnivorous sheep, but still).
Net result - $19.99/lb tenderloin, at about 6 lbs, became a 3.5 lb tenderloin - AT ABOUT $30/LB!!! Why didn't I ASK about the price difference? It was the daintiest, tiniest little $110 roast you EVER SAW. (Fed everyone it needed to, but... jeez, I felt like I needed to post a guard on it between purchase and Xmas.)
Good selection of other "market-ey" stuff... cheeses, etc. - but frankly, go for the meat. AND ASK QUESTIONS.
SIESELS SIESELS SIESELS!
I get pumped just thinking about going there. It took me three years of living here in SD to figure out that there WAS a good butcher shop here in town.
This is my GO TO place for special occassions. I say special occassion because it is out of the way (from the 92101) and it is expensive. However, for fresh meat I will always pay extra (insert Michael Scott TWSS here)!
But seriously, their selection is unparallelled. Everything from pork to filet, bacon to sausage to carne asada to venison (wild game is in a stand alone freezer there). They also have the Julian Apple Pies there!
The fellas behind the butcher counter can be a little off-putting your first time there but don't take it personally-that is just the personality of the place...a little Brooklyn attitude off of Morena Blvd.
# TIMES VISITED: 10
I would give this place 5 Stars but customer service went down since Iowa Meat Farm bought the place a few years back. You must try their Chorizo (pork), it's top grade.
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MEAT!
Go Meat!
Their prime beef selection is excellent. They could bulldoze the other half of the store, keep the meat counter and probably their chocolate offerings and probably still be doing just fine. Prime is corrosive on the bank account regardless of where you go, so I can't fault them for that, but the quality is great and still cheaper than hitting Bristol Farms.
Meat meat and more meat.
Combine that with knowledgeable employees and the choicest cuts of meat you can find.
Guys this is the place to get your steaks if you really want to show off your shiny new grill.
Don't forget to try the spicy links.
Great meat market! One of the best in town. Iowa and Siesel's are owned by the same company, but each market has it's own twist on some of the items. Definately high grade meat here. It is pricey, but you get what you paid for.
Firstly, the meat is great. The selection of meat is amazing. The home made sausages are delicious. The poultry is nice, they have pretty good wine selection, lots of cool small-store stuff.
I also love that its not a big impersonal grocery store. I still go here at least once a week, despite my general dislike for it.
Why 3 stars?
1. Because the service is so god-awful it makes me cringe. I don't need that much "service" at a market and I don't imagine many people do, but most (not all) of the employees absolutely hate their jobs and clearly hate the customers. They close at 7, try walking in the door at 6:55 to grab something quick and see how you are treated.
2. The produce is a joke. If you don't know what I am talking about, go and take a look. I know its not a produce place but seriously, my friends and I gamble on how many different produce selections will be covered in mold. The guy in charge of fresh produce is going blind or something (what an employee there told me), and it shows.
3. It is expensive. Very expensive. $30 a pound for cow meat is a lot.
Siesel's market is in my opinion the best place to go pick up fresh meat. With a great selection and a helpful staff it makes picking the right cut for the right occasion a breeze. Expensive? A bit, but for quality price is often not far behind.
The deli is great with wonderful sides such as potato salad and Siesel's baked beans which the staff is happy to let you try before you buy.
I'm glad I found this place located right off Morena Blvd. in Bay Park.
I love this place. My friends love this place. And they (for the most part) have never been here.
I do steak nights at my place on occasion. I buy the meat and my friends just reimburse me. Almost every time, I've come here. Last time I decided (for the sake of my tight summer budget) to try the meat at Costco, they all agreed so, we did. We all decided that day that Siesel's Choice Rib Eye at $16 a pound was a better choice than Costco's Prime Rib Eye at $10 a pound. Sure, I don't expect Costco to have the "best" meat, but when I'd rather pay $6/lb more for a "lesser" grade of meat, I think it says a lot.
Seriously, if you can find a better place in SD to get meat (not TOO inconveniently and at a reasonable price), PLEASE let me know. I'd LOVE to try it.
I wanna fight anyone who gives this place less than five stars. Seriously, let's throw some Jack Johnsons!! Everything from house-made sausages to chicken cordon blue to swordfish kabobs. Sandwiches, homemade dips and salsas, I could go on............And oh yeah, the steaks are the best you will EVER find.
Seisels is a throwback, the butchers are all really friendly and knowledgeable. The cashiers are happy and friendly. This is the meat shop that you imagine your parents went to before such places went the way of the dinosaur.
I have been coming here for years. I will only buy my meat from here or Iowa Farms. They have spoiled me from being able to eat regular supermarket meat. I've tried everything! including their marinated selections and have never been disappointed. I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!
All I can say is Surf and Turf. Siesel's is located next to one of my favorite fish restaurants in Bay Park. They offer dry aged meats of all sorts, and if you can't find what you want, they can accomodate to you. Their own smoked bacon is AMAZING. We stopped by when they had just finished smoking their latest round of bacon and the butcher was kind enough to slice me a sample. It was absolutely amazing.
Its rare nowadays to find a butchershop that is so knowledgeable. I was in Vons last night picking up steaks and I asked the guy behind the counter, (he doesn't even earn the title of "butcher") if the steaks were aged, and he said "um... i hope not. they usually are really fresh. the longest they'd sit there is a day or two and people would buy them." hm.... that slightly disturbs me. =P
Stop by Siesel's and they'll let you in on their secrets on the best way to prepare everything.
An old fashioned grocery store where even the customers talk to one another. They are the friendliest bunch around and makes you feel good going in.
Siesels isn't the biggest but it has the best meat selection and I haven't found any produce that compares in freshness or quality other than Whole Foods. The dips are great and they lay out samples daily. They have classes on how to do cooking. Fresh bread and Julian pies are always available.
This is the place to shop.
Siesel's is OK. I did not find them to be an exceptional butcher, though. I've tried them a couple of times because friends recommended them. When I asked for a Lamb saddle, they didn't know what it was. Finally, we determined that it is what they happen to call a "bracelet". No big deal, butchers from different areas use different names for the same cut of meat.
So, they were accommodating enough to trim the bracelet for me. But HOLY MOLY.... they weighed all the trimmed off fat and other refuse and wanted to charge me the same per pound as a trimmed lamb chop. I think it was $120 per saddle, a cut which would normally be around 1/2 that price at any other butcher.
On top of that, the lamb came from New Zealand. They don't even carry any fresh domestic or local lamb.
I didn't argue, since I had not asked the price prior to trimming it. I've been back once or twice, but their meat is fine though nothing really exceptional.
If all you need is ordinary cuts of meat with friendly service and a somewhat snobbish clientele, Siesel's is good. They don't provide anything that any other ordinary butcher can't provide, so don't make a special trip if there is another butcher nearby.
A few years ago and 450 miles north of here, i was in charge of the cleanliness of a small, independent butcher shop (http://www.yelp.com/bi...). i learned much from the owner (40 years' experience) about what to expect from your purveyor of meats and seafood, and Siesel's satisfies most expectations.
First, though, the reasons for pulling up short of that fifth star: 1) No organic chicken - maybe they have a good excuse, but i'd rather eat birds broken up over Phish's break up; 2) only frozen ground veal - don't look for my internal contradiction, just accept that i don't want a baby cow popsicle; 3) the fish isn't all that pretty - but Siesel's neighbor cornered the market on that, so no biggie. However...
The steak selection is impressive, with many cuts and always a number of Primes - kinda like an ice-cream shop where half of the tubs are filled with something that looks like Raspberry Swirl... marbling like a Tuscan villa! The bacon is truly marvelous and their deli makes the cut (tee-hee!), and they have an impressive selection of non-meats: spice rubs & sauces for those lazy or pressed on time, an improbably good selection of wines, attractive produce and cheeses - what a friend we have in cheeses!
Knowledgeable and friendly staff? Check.
Occasional Berkshire pork? Check, and if you don't know, find out!
Whole-piece mesquite charcoal? Check.
And a piece of good advice: DO NOT buy premarinated meat from a butcher, even a distinctly reputable one. There's a reason why it's cheaper and marinated already.
A San Diego institution. Ever hit OTL and find yourself at a great BBQ? The meat most likely came from here! This place has been around since the 50's and they stand out still for their awesome beef selection. Now that they are owned by the Iowa Farms people, some of their more creative pre-marinaded stuff has been pushed aside for the big selling stuff (Carne, Flank Steak marinades, kabobs and sausages) but who can complain? This is a fantastic place to load up for a summer party. They seem to carry a larger selection of Prime grade meat than the Iowa farms store. The staff isn't as customer centric as Iowa, so I can't tell if they are as knowledgeable. Still it works, but don't be afraid to speak up here especially if you are buying a shoulder roast, or rib roast in advance, ask them if it's dry or wet for example and how many it will feed. Good salsa selection.
This place is awsome... Every once in a while it's time to splurge on some Top of the line steaks. The aged USDA Prime N.Y. steaks are the best. They also have really good carne asada and pre-made Kabobs. Expect the cost to be $$$ ...You get what you pay for though.
meat. meat!
that's what my college roommate used say as we passed by our nutrition professor on the bike paths everyday. everyday in lecture, it would be about how americans eat too much meat, you don't need half the protein that is in the average american diet- yes, even if you are lifting weights and working out... why does the pizza guy put cheese on my pizza when i specifically asked for no cheese and....no meat? yeah, my nutrition classes sucked when i was an undergrad, but maybe he did have a point about the meat.
that said, i still like my quasi-typical meat centric american diet and sometimes i despise wasting my meat-filled calories on crappy meat. siesel's has great quality meat.... and for that quality you're going to pay for it. but let's be fair, it's not as expensive as bristol farms and provided that you don't f- it up when you cook it at home it's the best meat filled meal you'll ever cook.
the baby back ribs are about a dollar per lb cheaper and have tons more meat on the bone than anywhere else. so much more meat, i had to adjust my cook time. they were delicious. produce is not so impressive and the non-meat items in the open fridge and freezer section can be scary. i did see i sign once for julian apple pie here once, but i have yet to buy them here -i guess i will have to wait for fall time. this is a place to stick to the meat and the wall of meat seasonings/sauces. service is friendly and quick.
meat.
Owned by the same folks at Iowa Meat Farms for the past several years, this classic of a butcher shop and grocery store has experienced a bit of a renaissance. Great meat selection, prepped and serviced by some very knowledgeable (and occasionally surly) butchers. The rest of the market is a collection of tough-to-find spices/rubs, wines, cheeses, produce and specialty items. Great shop, if you're in the market for quality meat, though Iowa Meat Farms has a nicer facility (and friendly counter help).
Hard to beat a TRUE meat market. Special orders are welcomed here. Reminds me of the days when I was a kid, and the butcher would cut off a piece of REAL beef bologna, complete with the skin on the edges. These people know their products, and provide first class customer service. You might pay a bit more, but the proof's in the eating.
If you like to grill you need to be going here. If you cook often, you need to be going here. The meat quality and selection is impressive and the little market is perfect as the final stop on the grocery run for any bbq or feast, large or small. They've got a huge selection of sauces, rubs , marinades, appetizers, etc. to put together a delicious meal for you and a friend, or to entertain the neighborhood.
I felt obligated to review this place in order to address several points that were brought up below by an unnecessarily not-so-stellar review.
First of all, the produce there should be an afterthought for someone shopping there and should not be taken into account very seriously in rating this place. After all, if you were looking to pick up the freshest produce, would an "old fashioned meat market" be your first stop? No. The produce "aisle" (really about half an aisle) is there for convenience (i.e. ooooops, i forgot to get an avocado at the supermarket, or mmm that would be good sliced on top of this meat), not as a substitute for a grocery store. Hence, asparagus being like 6 bucks. Bottom line: go elsewhere for items other than meat, deli and appetizer stuff.
Also, if you regularly shop at Vons or Ralph's, which (as many people don't really know) is entirely staffed by robots, you may be taken aback by the human nature of the employees. I actually walked in there the first time I went at 6:55 when they were trying to wheel the ginormous cow into the doors to close up. I was given an exceptional amount of help from the guy behind the meat counter, and engaged in a conversation with the checkout lady about how bad she wanted to go home (something that most humans feel after a long day at work towards the end of a shift). The bottom line: if you prefer emotionless cogs, return to the Vons meat counter, but don't expect more help than they are programmed to give you (i.e. reading back the sign in front of the meat / fish after each question). If you want to talk to a person who is knowledgeable and helpful go to this place, but be warned: because they tend to staff humans, you seriously run the risk of encountering emotion during any interaction.
Finally, the price. I am a red meat lover. There was only ONE steak there (Prime, dry aged NY strip, I believe) that was 29.99/lb. Whoever has a problem with this doesn't know what they are looking at, although referring to something so beautiful merely as "cow meat" also raised a red flag. First of all, you cannot get prime dry aged NY strip at normal grocers. A 12 oz. portion of that type of steak served up at a restaurant is gonna run you like 60 bucks. Dry aged meat is expensive and you can't get it most places. Be aware that even all the meat at Costco is all only CHOICE, not PRIME.
I tried the dry aged rib eye and it was absurdly delicious (just barely seared, of course). There are totally reasonable things that are not expensive there as well. The HOMEMADE corned beef is awesome, take some home, boil it, and eat it for days. Also, the HOMEMADE sausages are great.
Overall, if you come to this placed armed with some food ideas and some common sense you will be very impressed and it will quickly become your new meat headquarters. Everyone else who gets to eat the food will thank you too. Go nuts.
Meat, sandwiches, speciality items..this place is a must go. worth the drive. you will be going back for more. everyone is super friendly and helpful. it will bring a huge smile to your face.
I love Siesel's....The stuffed pork chops are a personal fave, as is the Hawaiian marinated London Broil. I strongly suggest thatyou check out the freezer in the back - a great place for some hard-to-find items, like cryovacked duck breats, fois gras, great gounrd turkey and much more. The Burbon sausages are alto fabulous...
Its wonderful to walk into a grocery store that doesn't have the corporate supermarket feeling. It is clear that people running Siesel's really are interested in stocking quality foods from there selection of cookies to wine.
I went for the meats section and it was awesome. Wonderful selection of fresh cuts with a friendly helpful staff. I'll have to come back for there sausage and the Berkshire pork another reviewer recommended.
The prices were not low but quite reasonable for the quality.
Dry aged rib eye around $17/lb. The hanger steak I walked out with was $7.99/lb.
