18 reviews for Sierra Cup
This yogurt place was the first place of this kind in Old Town Monrovia. A year later, Pinkberry decided to plant their seed 2 buildings away from them...meniachal practice, if you ask me.
But, I am here to review this place and not to talk about anything else. I am a huge fan of Sierra Cup. They have red velvet mini cupcakes and coconut covered ones too....and they're cheap! They have good coffee and besides their yogurt and mochi toppings, they have a wii inside their parlour where you can play against others or by yourself while you're finishing your yogurt.
How fun, right?
The people are super friendly and they have good entertainment on Fridays and Saturdays.
I haven't been back to downtown Monrovia in almost a year. Taking a stroll down Myrtle Ave, I noticed Sierra Cup. "Oh, thats new" I thought. It was pretty warm out and that "Smoothie" sign in the window drew me in.
As I walked in, I was pleasantly surprised. It looked like the froyo places you see in the Silicon Valley; beautiful flat LCDs everywhere, including one being used to display the store's menu. Everything inside was WHITE. I was hesitant to touch anything, afraid of making something dirty.
I ordered a "Snowboarder" smoothie w/ protein boost. The names of the drinks were all winter sports themed: Snowboarder, Bobsledder, etc. Other than smoothies they serve a wide variety of coffee drinks along with Frozen Yogurt. Prices seemed reasonable (my smoothie was $4 w/ the protein boost).
This place isn't really about the food they serve though, the atmosphere is what makes this place. There is a Wii lounge (thats right, a Nintendo Wii lounge) to the right as you walk in with two Wii hooked up to HDTVs ready for consumption. In the back there is a patio lounge with nice chillaxing furniture. There is also a stage outside where they host live bands on several nights of the week. Nice. They also have movie nights at the store. Interesting. This place is all about bringing people together and keeping them entertained.

Food: D+ (for the froyo) and F (for the cupcake)
Value: C+
Service: A
Decor: bland light blue & green indoor with a candle lit patio
Return Rate: Will probably update this review once more for accuracy - UPDATED and will only return if my friend wants to play Wii
Yes, I'm still stuck on the Seinfeld episodes again. I'm thinking about the episode with the nonfat yogurt ... and when I think about froyo, is it really low cal?
But here's the low down:
Froyo did not leave a lasting impression, but it is creamier than Pinkberry. (UPDATE: too sweet)
The mini cupcake ... just no good ... was THIS low cal ... where's the butter?
The Wii ... good times ... too bad my friend and I like to get each other injured. (UPDATE: They have Guitar Hero. But we couldn't figure it out. After 3 games with a score of zero ... the kids told us that we weren't strumming ... I was laughing the whole time.)
Props to joanna e. because I felt the same the way :)

Hmmm...interesting concept for a yogurt place. Flat screen TVs all along the walls with 2 large ones in front where a girl was playing Guitar Hero on one and two guys were Wii bowling on the other.
And oh yeah, they also have yogurt, coffee and cupcakes.
They have four flavors of yogurt (plain "sour", chocolate, blueberry and vanilla) and lots of fruit and dry toppings. I ordered my usual, but found that the yogurt was a bit on the frozen side, so it was more like ice cream. It was still good, though.
Sierra Cup is a little too busy for me. Usually, I like to eat my yogurt in peace without having people in the background yelling things in the name of competitive spirit when playing video games. So I ended up taking mine to go.

This place has a pretty trendy atmosphere... about the same as Pinkberry, but with a Wii lounge and an outdoor lounge in the back. The service is friendly and fast.
The yogurt was very tasty, but the selection of flavors and toppings was kind of limited.
I was rather disappointed by the coffee. There was a bit of hype surrounding it, and I was let down when the coffee was no better than what you can get at Charbucks. Oh well.
So the yogurt is good, but the limited selection and underwhelming coffee bring this place down to a 4.
Mm... nothin' like a hot latte and some frozen yogurt. Latte was ehh.. frozen yogurt was pretty good. Tasted like soft serve ice cream. Mm.
My Internet was out at the time, so I was driving around looking for free wi-fi. Then I remembered this place because they were passing out fliers for their grand opening at the Farmer's Market. So I drove all the way to Monrovia (I live in Alhambra) just to try this place out, and because I'm so dependent on Internet. I wanna say I was studying and doing homework... but knowing me, probably not.
So after I connected to their open unsecured network, my laptop just froze. I had to unplug and it and take the battery out to turn it off then restart. Then it started acting all crazy. So this led me to believe that since this was an unsecured connection, someone hacked into my computer and gave it a virus or something, orrrr it was just time for this puppy to go. It said it was low on memory when I restarted it a few times, so I don't know.
I don't know why I'm telling you this, but it made this place memorable... not really in a good way. But they have Wii and flat screen TVs and a nice outdoor patio area in the back. There was a stage for performers, and couches for loungers. Cool looking place, but I'll probably have to come back here again to really say it's a place worth coming to. They had just opened, and it was pretty dead. I hope they're doing better now.

Was going to go to Coldstone across the street for some ice cream but decided to stop here instead, and oh man was it a great idea.
Their coffee was good, the hot chocolate was strange in a yummy way, their cupcakes were good as well - yes, it's on the expensive side (to joanna) but if you've gone to the likes of Sprinkles, then no, it's fairly cheap. We played wii bowling for a few minutes and I used the free wifi to check my email on my phone, and then the owner (or at least he looked like the owner, because he was working behind the counter but wasn't wearing an apron or anything) stopped us before we left and gave us this thick pile of like 10 "buy one get one free" cards.
It's sort of a pinkberry rip in terms of decor and froyo, but it's not too bad. At least it's not an actual Pinkberry :)

I came here specifically for the red velvet cupcakes and although they were delicious i found them to be a bit oily ...but The frosting was very cream cheesey... mmmmmmmmm :-)
Uhmmmmmm, Karen and Pete are you related to the owners of Sierra cup b/c really my experience was not as pleasant?
Though the place is cute, Wii area, cute tables, etc.... but really $1.95 for the smallest cupcakes known to man! I want to say it was about 30% the size of a real cupcake. If you get a real size cupcake it's over $4!
Also, whatever happened to originality - b/c this place lacks it? It looks like a complete rip of Pinkberry!
I may give this place another go (before Pinkberry opens)...
Yummy yogurt without the sterile/cookie cutter feel of Pink Berry's. They have free Wii for the kids and occasionally have movies and bands in the back patio in the afternoons. It's a great place to go. The people there are always nice.

I came here by chance when I was visiting a friend out in Monrovia. She suggested to try this place since it is relatively new.
I am giving it three stars because the decor is just not my cup of tea (no pun intended). I prefer a nice quiet, simple coffee shop, but hey that's just me.
I did think the coffee was good, and I was even more excited to see that they serve Auntie Em's Kitchen's cupcakes there (being a huge fan it's great to see their cupcakes in other places).
Overall the experience wasn't too bad. But don't just go off my opinions.... it's worth a trip to check out.
I enjoyed the yogurt. It tasted like good frozen yogurt. They recently updated their topping lists to include a bunch of awesome sugary ones (I like me some refined sugar). The back patio is really relaxing; great ambiance. Note to the owners - maybe you can have them turn the volume down a little? I enjoyed the ambiance but I had to yell to chat with my friends. I also would like to see some cupcakes in there that have butter in the recipe instead of oil - much better taste.
I didn't get the chance to try their yogurt, though I did visit the yogurt shop up the street called Cherry on Top, but I wanted to mention their cupcakes. I tried their chocolate ganache (mini) and red velvet (reg.) cupcake. I've gone around L.A. and have tried various cupcake shops, like Sprinkles, Yummy Cupcakes and Violet's, and really wasn't expecting much but since it's just up the street from where I work, I thought I would give it a shot. I would say it was fair. The cupcake was on the dry/rubbery side, but I do enjoy their frosting though. It's not too sweet and is not reminiscent of that fake frosting that you get at Sprinkles (though the cake base is better at Sprinkles). The cake part is actually quite similar to Yummy Cupcakes, but it's nothing special. Next time I go, though, I might pass on the cupcake and try their yogurt instead.
I know 'tis not the season for yogurt... but heck we crave for it every now and then even if it's like 40 degrees outside. Once my husband and 2 kids ran in the rain cuz we forgot to bring an umbrella just so we can have our Sierra cup! We like this better than Pinkberry, to tell you the truth. It's not the toppings (i mean, how can you go wrong with fruity pebbles or mochi or fresh strawberries!), but it's the yogurt itself. It's more homemade in taste and not as commercialized. And it's also not because the owner is a fellow Filipino... But hey, that makes it even better, don't you think! And must I say, he's very very warm and friendly - you'll definitely feel at home when he's there. Makes us even more proud of our race!

Cool place, great ambience, especially the patio. Live music back in the patio area regularly. Really fine local talent (including one of the employees) plays here as well as some talent from other parts of LA. The sound system is much nicer than what you typically see at similar places.
The yogurt - only two words about it - freakin' awesome! The cupcakes are bitchin' as well.
The owners, Dexter, Cindy, and Larry, are all wonderful people and have really made me feel at home when I was visiting their shop.
We came here after dinner from Mikomi's across the street for a cup of joe and some yogurt. As you enter, everything here is clear and plastic, (seems futuristic) with tons ( actually, I think it was 8) of Vizio LCD TVs on the wall. They even have 2 TVs in the front just to play Wii Sports. The staff is friendly, the coffee was strong. They close at 9 on a Thursday but they were nice enough for us to play one game of Wii bowling after they closed. Great place to go after dinner or after a movie across the street.
Stopped by the place after a friend recommended it, i thought it was great. Got a chance to chat with the owners, seemed very nice and considerate. When I couldn't decide what to get, they were quick to recommend and let us try a few things. Personally, I like it better than Crack-berry... Hope they are able to continue to do well when it opens down the street.
I also like the decor, the Wii's are fun, and the back patio has a nice quaint feel to it, they also seem to have musical performances. Haven't had a chance to check that out yet, but hopefully I will get a chance soon.
Random thought? Why so many frozen yogurt places suddenly opening in Monrovia? Looks like 3 will be open in a 5 block radius.
I think for a small place they use it is amazing the menu they have. Coffee, sandwiches AND yougurt. I know they are struggling to make it as a new establishment trying to compete with other the overpriced frozen yogurt places while the economy also sucks. My suggestions to make this a viable place to help your bottom line:
No one should use the WII without buying somehting first
Put a sign up saying you love the company but coming for the free shows and using the WII won't help you.
the plastic furniture is ugly and totally uncomfortable. If a customer is old or short it's absolutely useless. The back area is great but you should also have a mobile cart to serve sandwiches/coffee as well.
stop spending so much on the best of the best blueberries from italy and other things that others such as "cherry on top" doesn't do. Most of us won't know the difference and it's not going to help you survive to be honest.
Honesly what you are doing is great, it's a great concept and I hope you succeed.
Please do not be so hard on the help. They work hard for you and do the best they can. They want you to succeed!
People help them out. It's a great place doing something better than other other boring coffee houses with all the great features they showcase--music, movies and WII.
BTW, the yogurt tastes better than the other one around the corner. :)
