Review from Paul L.

My girlfriend and I went here on New Years eve with a reservation. From the minute we walked in and the hostess offered the coat check service to us we were made to feel welcome. Our waitress Anne-Marie was extremely knowledgeable regarding questions we had about the menu, wine pairings, etc - even having memorized a multitude of specials they had going on that evening all of which sounded absolutely delicious.
The atmosphere of the restaurant was festive and very appropriate given the fact it was New Years Eve - and both the food and the drinks were beyond phenomenal. The menu had a very nice and fairly authentic feel to it (as to how accurate that feel was I unfortunately cannot testify but this is by no means your "italian american" lasagna/chicken marsala place) with options ranging from a board of antipasti olives, cheeses, meats to truffle laden appetizers and salads all through the assortment of entrees and delicious deserts.
The restaurant definitely commands a bit of a price but for that special night out whether it be romantic or just a once-in-a-while dinner Siena is a choice you cannot go wrong with. -

Updated based on my non restaurant week visit!
When the parents came to town I thought I might treat my mother to a nice meal at a place my lovable but boring meat and potatoes father has no interest in. So one Sunday evening I left the wife and dad at the house to watch football while we were off to Siena!
First thing to note, you can now use Open Table to make reservations at the East Greenwich location! Hooray!
I had a glass of sangria while my mom had the basil strawberry lemonade, both were tasty. We started out by sharing the Caprese salad which we dug. I also had the pasta e fagioli bianco. The portion was huge and it was one of the best I have ever tasted.
My main course was the shrimp and risotto and it was perfect. Five large shrimp that were cooked well with a creamy and flavorful risotto surrounded by a vegetable puree. My mom had the smaller cut of the sirloin. She ordered it medium rare and it came out medium rare.
For dessert my mom couldn't wait for her creme brulee and she wasn't disappointed! I tried the bread pudding (because it's hard for me to say no to a bread pudding). It was flavorful but slightly dry, probably due to the panetone bread which I find to be a dry bread.
We walked out of there full and satisfied and without enough leftovers to feed us another full meal. One of my new favorite places and I am definitely looking forward to my next visit.1 Previous Review: Show all »

That was some good stuff! I love the mix-and-match tapas (meats, cheeses, and olives) that they offer... check out the menu! For some reason their location in Providence doesn't offer the same thing.
We got the fig and prosciutto grilled pizza, and DAAAAMN. I tell you, DAAAAMN. Pretty damn good! And the leftovers still tasted just as good.
Our waitress was extremely friendly and helpful, too. I wish it wasn't so far away, but I feel I will be back sometime anyway... -

Siena is a great restaurant!
It is very cozy inside, and that is not my nice way of saying small. It is very spacious inside, but has a very warm, homey feeling.
The staff is very nice and knowledgeable about what they have to offer, what wines to try and what the specials contain.
The food is delicious! The portions are large and very filling. There is always something new to try and everything I have ever tried I have enjoyed! Great Italian Food, wonderful atmosphere and a very accommodating staff. What more could you ask for? Parking? Well, there is an abundance of that too! -
Review from Robert M.
I don't get it. So yes the food was from okay good to great. It was Italian that in some cases very creative, in others, traditional. But to say this is the Best restaurant in Rhode Island is a stretch. A big stretch. Now I must say that my pallet is sometimes impacted by my wallet, but not this time.
So we had an app that was brioche with cheese and fig, it was great. The wife had a grilled pork loin that was really good. She also had a Sangria which she found marginal. I had their pasta bolognese, which is one of their signature dishes. It was good. Not WOW good, but good. We also had their risotto which was really good.
So now my gripe. I ordered a glass of ice tea. It came out in a small glass, about 8 oz. Remove the ice, you are at about 3 oz of tea. Then I drank the tea. I sat and sat and sat. Finally the waitress asked if I would like more tea. Yes I said. This happened twice. So a total of three glasses. So was this great tea worthy of the 'Best Restaurant in RI'? Ummm, it was powder mix. But, for their having to stir the stuff, you get charged $2.00 per 3 oz serving. It would be nice if they told you they did that.
So in the big scheme of things, I will probably not go back. There are actually better places if people just ventured out and did not buy into the hype. Was the food good, yes. Service, so so. Bill, way too high. Drinks, water was good, and just the right price. -

We went to Siena Sunday night for an unplanned family dinner after spending the afternoon watching our nephew's little league game. What a great experience!
The interior of the restaurant is beautiful, our server was tremendous, and the food was outstanding. A great menu, both food and wine, and the specials for the night were excellent. My meal choice was the grilled swordfish with mission figs, one of the nightly specials, and it was absolutely perfect.
I would absolutely recommend Siena for your next meal! -

Went with my wife for a late snack, around 10:00, on a recent Wednesday night. Not wanting to wait, we sat at the bar and ordered some drinks and asked for menus.
We decided on a appetizer platter which consisted of cheese, bruschetta, hard salami, and olives. We also got one of the specials for the day which was a salad with very fresh mozzarella as the highlight of the dish.
The service from the bartender was good - she was friendly and efficient. Our food was served quickly and was as expected based on the descriptions from our bartender. It was all very good, and I was pleased with the generous portions. Usually when you get a cheese plate somewhere, you get the tiniest sliver of cheese. Here, we got a nice slab of delicious gorgonzola.
Everything was fresh and tasted good. I would like to try this again for a full dinner but since we only had a couple of small dishes I can't rate it more than 3 stars. Just not enough to go on. It is promising though.
One complaint - the music was MUCH too loud. If this was simply a bar or nightclub kind of place that would be fine, but it was a weird vibe for this restaurant. The tone here seems to be more of a refined atmosphere, with an emphasis on upscale menu items and a sophisticated clientele. Maybe it was just an off night. Definitely will go back to eat again though.Comment from Chris T. of Siena Cucina Enoteca 7/5/2011

Fantastic dining experience from start to finish. The hostesses were nice, our waitress was warm, funny, and lovely, the atmosphere had the feel of someplace where you could hold a grand occasion or a quiet dinner equally well, and you didn't have to shout to be hear over the music or the din of other diners. And the food, of course, was spectacular. My wife had this honey truffle chicken which was just about the best chicken dish I've ever tasted, and the swordfish special I had was fantastic. And the dessert we ordered was fantastic: a sort of friend dough (more like a beignet, really) coated in cinnamon and sugar, served with vanilla bean gelato and warm Nutella. I hate that I'm not eating that right now.

Can you call a restaurant workmanlike? What do you do when you find a place that does nothing wrong, but leaves no impression?
This is the perfect place for 1/2 star ratings, but seeing as that's not possible 4 it is. I'm not really a fan. Don't get me wrong, the food is good, and the service professionally done, but I don't like it here.
Getting a table is a chore, especially on the weekend. This is one popular restaurant. Without a reservation, you'll be standing in the breezeway, outside, or next to someone elses table. There is no room for the crowd. Getting seated near the door is as pleasant as it sounds. It's just as bad near the small bar in the back.
The food is well prepared, but "modern Italian" it ain't. There are some inventive choices on the appetizer side, but you'll be having a cutlet, pasta, fruiti du mer plate for dinner. Your not going to see "old school" Italian either, no ribiolitta or veal 'n peas in this joint. Just good versions of the same favorites you're use to.
I can say I'm a fan of the wine list. Its a well chosen collection, strong on Italian choices, that's priced well. I mean, you won't be running home smiling about what a deal you got, but you won't be remorseful about your choices either. Particulaly good are the Il Poggione Rosso Di Montacino and the BV Reserve Tapestry, both marked up less than $20.
Maybe it's me, but dining out is something I do for the experience. It's an activity, entertainment, a fun thing to do for the afternoon or evening. Well, you'll want to bring a few friends and some lively conversation, because here, it's just dinner. -

Last week we went to Sienna's for some good wine, nice dinner In a nice atmosphere. We have been to Sienna's several times before and new we were going to get exactly what we were looking for. We started with a nice glass of Chianti and the Involtini di Melanzane (fried eggplant rolled with prosciutto and ricotta cheese) which was wonderful. Next we decided on the Penne alla Vodka, I had mine with shrimp. Again, was all we had hoped for. In general this is a five star dining experience, great staff nice atmosphere and very good food. The tab is a bit on the pricey side but overall worth it. The wine is excellent and VERY reasonably priced however.
I suggest a reservation but also dining at the bar is also a good experience at this fine establishment! -

Siena in east g has a totally different vibe from federal hill. If you haven't been, it's definitely worth checking out!
The menu is slightly different and they offer cheese boards and tapas. They usually have a cheese selection of the day which you can't go wrong with! For tapas I recommend the roasted beets with pistachio purée which I can never seem to get enough of!
The pasta bolognese is probably one of their best dishes! And don't forget dessert.... The doughboys with vanilla ice cream and nutulla are delicious!
If your party is small sit at the bar! The girls behind the bar are AWESOME!
Recently I had an issue with something I ate that seemed to have gone bad. This is rare! I hate to complain but I said something to the waiter and it was immediately taken off our bill and we were given cimplimentary refills on our glasses of wine! Obviously there are bound to be times when something comes out of of the kitchen spoiled or doesn't meet your expectations like in any restaurant but I go there all the time and haven't been disappointed with the service yet!! -

This place was phenomenal. I had heard a lot about it and was excited to go. I am a vegetarian and this place had a lot of options. The wine list is very extensive. The service was great. The cheese plate and my meal was fantastic, I had the gnocchi. But the best was the Arancina Gorgonzola, which is quite possible the best tasting thing I have ever had.

Delicious, but make reservations! We made the mistake of not doing so and yet managed to get a table in the bar area. For me, I felt as though there was too much traffic at that seat because we were right near the front door...not so good in January!
The food made up for any discomfort I felt, however, and I cannot wait to return! -

Thank you VERY much, Siena, for washing the taste of Temple out of my mouth.
Rhode Island is heaven for italian food conessieurs. Places like Providence, Cranston, and Federal Hill teem with italian food restaurants offering fares from bistro style "new american" italian food to hearty family style classic italian dishes. The historic and world famous north end of Boston is just over an hour away, showcasing the best pastries and pastas this side of the Atlantic. It's overwhelming.
Siena stands out as one of the best of the best in a saturated market. It has legitimate street cred; locally trained chefs (Johnson and Wales products) that have trained classically in Italy. Siena brings the fresh taste and zealotry for fresh ingredients to life in unexpected places. The quality across both of their locations is equal and immeasurable.
The E. Greenwich location is located on the outskirts of the historic and boutique-y shopping strip. In the summer time, it's certainly worth a trip to enjoy the sights and sounds. Beautiful shops and houses decorate this quiet and sleepy RI town.
Service was warm and friendly, notable considering how busy the restaurant was when my group was seated.
The restaurant rotates it's specials so that every time you visit there is the option of something new, daring, and exciting. The regulars we ate with (props for the great choice, Jay and Kat) rarely ever bother with the menu.
That menu, however, will offer something for ANYONE. Overflowing with variety and tastes.
The pink penna ala vodka cream sauce pizza was crisp and flavorful; artisan touch with a warm and zesty sauce finish.
Entrees such as Maple glazed seared salmon in a buttery roasted sun dried tomato cream sauce topped with perfectly cooked scallops were mouth watering and visually appealing. The fluffy risotto was exemplary and decadent, complimenting the huge fresh stuffed shrimp.
Make sure you try the doughboys or one of the other FANTASTIC deserts. You'll hate yourself for the indulgence later as you pound off the calories....(if you're me) but the moment is worth it. Warm and doughy pastries blanketed by ice cream and drizzled with a chocolate nutella.....let me wipe off my keyboard before I finish.
Wonderful experience, amazing food, great presentation, and fabulous service highlight a restaurant I will return to in the future. The menu can be a bit pricey (especially the wine list, which is very posh) but overall a dining experience that should be savored and treasured. -

I never really thought I'd give 5 stars to an Italian restaurant situated in a nondescript strip mall in East Greenwich, RI...but hey, never say never, right?
My cousin picked Siena for our Easter dinner, and I have to commend him, because it's one of the best meals I've had in a while. There were 8 of us for dinner, and we were seated immediately. (yay reservations!) The dress code was "formal", but formal is sort of a misleading word because in my mind, "formal" conjures images of top hat, cane, and monocle. AKA Mr. Peanut. Everyone seemed to be dressed nicely, save for a couple of women whose idea of Easter dress was something better suited to the Strip in Las Vegas. Tight shiny green print halter dress that barely covers the bum? Check. Lucite heels? Check. Sense of propriety? Curiously absent. They were just so out-of-place on such a cold day. I couldn't wrap my brain around it.
The decor was nothing really special. I faced the window, so I didn't get to check out too much. I noticed, though, that earth tones and funky circular booths seemed to dominate the room.
No, what really made this meal was the most important aspect: the food. Sean and I split an appetizer of the Balsamic Calamari, which was tender and crispy in just the right way. My uncle ordered the asparagus wrapped in prosciutto and stuffed with goat cheese (a combination of my three favorite things). OM NOM NOM. For my entree, I had the Frutti Di Mare, complete with JUMBO skrimps and lots of other types of seafood over tender linguine with a delightfully tomato-y clam broth. Bliss, including the bread. Sean had the gnocchi, which was incredibly rich but delicious. Our table ordered a variety of food, from chicken to salmon to seafood, and everyone seemed to love what they ordered. I had two glasses of Lohr 2007 cabernet, which provided a perfect complement to the meal.
Because I'm awesome and don't know when to say no, I ordered dessert. I forget the exact name of my dish, but it was basically a giant scoop of vanilla bean gelato with 3 fresh doughboys (sprinkled liberally with sugar) and a little bowl of warm Nutella for dipping. Oh my. I couldn't finish it, but what I did have was amazing. However, Sean had the chocolate hazelnut gelato, and while my dish was delicious, I sort of wished I'd just followed and ordered the same thing.
After all that food, however, I left full but not overstuffed. The prices? Well, the bill came to $400, but that's really not unheard of given the circumstances. At $50 per person for food and drinks, that's not bad at all for the type of meal we shared. I'd definitely come back here for a family meal, but it's such an odd location. I certtainly wouldn't think to come back here on a whim...unless it was to people-watch more inappropriately-dressed patrons. -

Quite a find inside a strip mall in forest-lined Rhode Island suburbia. Siena Cucina has fantastic service, for the most part fairly attentive and polite even though everyone looks like they are under the age of 21. The goat cheese and proscuitto appetizer was salty and creamy and wonderful, and the frutti del mar pasta dishes (a favorite at our table of 6) were made very well with succulent pieces of fresh Atlantic scallops, shrimp, and whitefish. I ordered the grilled scallops which came with a block of polenta and tomato paste on the side, which tasted like the best part of the best pizza you've had. However the portion size on the scallops left something to be desired, so I'd recommend ordering that as an appetizer.
Drinks were strong and a glass of Five Rivers red was the winner at the table. A definite recommendation if you're in the area. -

Siena is a really great Italian restaurant with one of the most amazing penne a la vodka dishes around.
I'm a penna a la vodka snob, and it's hard to beat the dish from my favorite NYC restaurant. However, Siena came VERY close, which shocked me since it's in a strip mall in a Rhode Island suburb. Their penne a la vodka was spicy- amazing!
They also have an interesting tapas menu, which looked delicious.
The atmosphere is warm and cozy, especially since we went there in a torrential rainstorm. I highly recommend this place! -

I have dined at both locations and the food is good and they have a nice selection of olives. However the service was very poor this Saturday night. We had appetizers and it took almost 45 minutes to receive our food. It was good but it couldn't make up for the service.

Siena was an excellent place for two couples to sit and talk. The atomsphere was amazing, low lighting and unique decor. The tables are far enough apart that you have your own space. Dresswise, I would say jeans and a nice top. YEt, it is a place you could dress nicer and not be out of place.
And then there is the food. Our group order a the giant meatball topped with great Italian cheeses and a portabella mushroom topped with goat cheese and panchetta. AWESOME! For dinner we ordered a wide range of items and was happy with all of it. The service was great and not overbearring.
Overall, we were very happy with our time spent at Siena. -

My friend just moved to RI, so I headed out here to visit from San Francisco. We wanted a fun girls night out - and so headed here for dinner. We were so happy we chose this place. The bill was about $100 (including tax, tip, drinks etc), but worth so much more! I had two glasses of the Tolly Pinot Noir and my friend had Coppola Claret.
We started with the Firenze Tasting Board - wonderful, the combination of the fig jam with the salty prosciutto was the perfect compliment. They also brought a bread basket - my only complaint: the butter was cold and the bread wasn't warm. There were three types: garlic foccacia, multi-grain (?), and white bread. We wanted more of that amazing foccacia and asked for it to be warmed - heaven!
My friend had the Sacchetti con Zucca e Amaretti (Pumpkin Ravioli in chestnut and pancetta cream sauce) - let me first say it's been 24 hours and she's mentioned how amazing it was about 1,000 times. She says it was the best meal she's ever had. It was phenominicent (Phenominal and Magnificent). I mean, if it resulted in a new adjective in the English language, it had to be good.
I got the Antipasti Involtini di Melanzane (eggplant) and it was really hearty and done so well.
We also, being lushes, got the small side of risoto and sweet potato fries. Wow, it was so much food - so, so much food. Everything was so fantastic.
And then, to ensure our titles of "princesses of lushness" we got two desserts: the Budino di Panettone (bread pudding) and Raspberry Crème Brûlée. We enjoyed a coffee (one regular one decaf) each. I love very strong coffee, but this was just alright, not super strong like I like. The desserts were really big and both were done very well.
Needless to say we couldn't finish the dinner or dessert .
Our waitress, Ann Marie (I think?!) was great. She was very knowledgeable about the wine list and when we drew blanks she suggested wines for us and we loved them both. She also was very truthful about the menu. When we complimented her on her knowledge of the menu and honesty she said "It's easy, it just depends on how amazed you want to be."
We were there for over 2 hours (Tuesday reservations for 7:30pm), never felt rushed, or too slow. There was a bit gap between the tasting board and the main course but it was well worth the wait. -

Service was superb - we were a party of 3 & 2 things we ordered (the shrimp fritti appetizers & the doughboys) came as an order of 2 & we were able to get three of each thing on request (of course for an add'l charge).
Portions were reasonable and everything was really tasty, though my boyfriend was a bit disappointed with the size of his scallops and the fact that they seemed more like they were prepared on a grill instead of in a pan because of the unevenness of the sear. I had the veal scallopini with mushrooms and I do wish it was served with a small amount of pasta to soak up the delicious sauce. -

I love Siena, If you can get a table, you're golden. They are always packed. I love getting a cheese plate to go with some wine as a starter. For your meal, you can't go wrong with a Mediterranean pizza, but my favorite thing is the baked gnocchi. Once they also had a meatball appetizer that I am still thinking about. It's a great place, and the servers are top notch. Rock on, Siena!!
PS--They are also next door to a truly amazing yarn store, UNWIND RI. -

Um...I am going to go against the grain here because my experience was nothing like the others I have read. We had a reservation that was made a week in advance. We were seated promptly at our table by the door...oooooo October breezes. The service was ok. The menu, while interesting offered no more variety or italian authenticity than any other restaurant in the area. Calamari was very fishy tasting, the filet was fatty and my pasta dish was bland at best. I remain unimpressed.

Fabulous food ALWAYS, fabulous staff and atmosphere.
My only complaint is that when you Go to pick up your take out orders, they make you go to the bar to get it, if it isn't ready you stand there awkwardly waiting..... Uncomfortable if your not drinking, in overly casual clothes, or with children. They should rethink the logistics of this.
,I love the original Sienna in Providence too ! I love Chris. -

We love Siena in East Greenwich. The food is consistently good; the mushroom pizza appetizer is a particular favorite of ours. We've never had bad waitstaff service there and every entree we've had there has been fabulous. One little glitch, though, that I had with them some months ago was with a reservation; I called on a Tuesday evening for a Friday reservation, and the woman took my information down and made the reservation. However, when we arrived on Friday night, they apparently didn't have it. They did manage to squeeze us into a table after a short 15 minute wait, but I am now leery of their "system" when I make a reservation there. I always call before we head of the house to confirm, which you really shouldn't have to do. On a side note: I really like using http://OpenTable.com for reservations; I've never had a problem using that system.

Siena's rating fluctuates from 1-5. Some dishes are executed very well and others are far from great. To elaborate, the tomato and mozzarella salad was unbelievable. The lettuce was an extremely fresh spring/spinach mix. There were red and yellow tomatoes, with an extra virgin oil balsamic glaze. In between the tomatoes was the mozzarella which was smoked to perfection. Presentation was simple but creative, the tomatoes and cheese was stacked in the center of the dish and the lettuce surrounded it. The swordfish was very dry and lacked a flavor. The cioppino had a good flavor but the clams and mussels were very fishy. One of my favorite pastas was the butternut squash ravioli topped with a maple butter glaze. The flavor was amazing but the pasta was not as good as you would expect. This is an example of how sometimes they are on the mark and other times they can't get it together. I did however have one of the best wines a cabernet/sirah blend, Engelbrecht Els to be exact. A beautiful South African wine. I'll be back but sometimes this place is like playing the slots. Perhaps one should stick to the wine and cheese boards.

A sister restaurant of the original on Providence's Federal Hill, Sienna Cucina in East Greenwich is my new favorite place. Located in the Benny's shopping plaza on Post Road in the space vacated most recently by India, suggest you make reservations--otherwise, it's hard to get in without an hour wait, even on week nights. If we're lucky, we equally enjoy grabbing seats at the marble bars and sampling different small plates. Great atmosphere, good attention to service, and outstanding quality and portions of food with a nice wine list at a good value. Overall, consistently excellent.

For a state with a deep tradition of amazing Italian food, Siena is at the top of the list. Consistely rated as a Best of RI pick, the food is well-prepared, diverse and delicious. Be prepared to spend money, because you can easily rack up a large bill with the fantastic meat and cheese boards and lots of good wine.
