I absolutely love this place. I've only been once, and I fell in love with the place as soon as I stepped in. As Bob Marley poured from the small speakers amid the vast selection of the owner's Cd's, I felt immediately at home. Russell greeted my girlfriend and I quickly and courteously and told us to sit wherever we would like.
I have heard the Mom's Curry is fantastic. Unfortunately they were out on the day I went. I then asked for the Spicy Basil Chicken but was informed that the basil had just been planted and could not be expected for some time. This made me feel good about the quality of the food I was about to be served, if I could ever pick something they were not out of.
I finally settled on the Pad Thai, as did my lovely girlfriend. I must say it was absolutely fantastic. Some of the best Thai food I have ever had.
As friendly as Russell is, he takes his time on taking and placing your orders. It made me feel good to know that each dish is cooked to order, but it would be nice to get it out a little quicker.
All in all, Siam House is a great place and is highly recommended in my book.
We were introduced to Siam House 5 years ago. The interior is in desperate need of an update, as are a few of the painted, sagging ceiling tiles.
Russel, the owner, is a bit odd, but always nice. As for the crowd? There usually isn't one. Maybe 2 or 3 tables when we go.
While the atmosphere doesn't offer much, the food is fabulous. Most entrees are prepared by Russel's wife and we've never been disappointed. I am a fan of the Cashew Chicken, while my husband loves the Pad Thai. Most entrees are prepared by Russel's wife and we've never been disappointed. For those that love Thai curry, this is the place to go. Russel's mother-in-law prepares the curry and ships it to him weekly from her home in Thailand.
Just remember that this is a true hole in the wall. We're not driving 30 minutes for ambiance...Just the great food.
We decided to check out this little store front Thai restaurant just off the UNT campus. The restaurant is small and homey with pleasant accents in rose, peach and forest green. There was only one waiter serving during our visit and he was slow and smart-mouthed. Even though school was out, there was a small group of boisterous students that disrupted whatever atmosphere the place could muster.
The menu featured a limited selection of Thai and traditional Chinese entrees, appetizers and soups. The egg rolls with chicken were fairly standard and were served with a nice sweet spicy sauce. For entrees, we had the Rama Swimming (Peanut Chicken) and Chicken Pad Thai. The Rama Swimming was served with chicken tossed with spinach and peanut sauce. The peanut chicken was an outstanding dish with a great sauce that was a nice warm spicy heat. The pad thai on the other hand was a little odd, served with very thin rice noodles instead of the more usual wide noodles. The sauce and seasoning was unidentifiably sour. We had planned to try their "famous coconut ice cream," but the poor service and obnoxiously loud patrons discouraged from staying any longer than was necessary.
Surly owner doesn't make up for the restful decor.
Have been several times, always hoping his mood would improve, but not. Unless you are in his 'circle', apparently the owner sees no reason to be friendly to any others, we've seen him fawn over a friend who drinks to oblivion so maybe that's the key. All others are just adding to his bottom line.
Food was okay but I'd go elsewhere. Sweet Basil Thai on the loop, or Thai Ocho at Malone/Univ. or SukoThai II on W. Hickory near Fry, anyplace but here.
i tried this place twice. Their food is overpriced, service is non-existent but damn, I do love their decor. I liked the low-lighting and their tea was great. Definitely not worth a second visit but I gave them a shot. I wonder if other Thai places feel insultedby these guys.
