R.I.P. Shuggie... I went twice today to enjoy my last awesome fried chicken and waffles and my last mouth watering burger and fries. I'm going to miss the huge burgers and green chili cheese fries, their ice cream onion rings, shakes and anything else I can get my hands on.
I hope this place comes back, I'm going to miss is a lot. :(1 Previous Review: Show all »

Trailer Park Eatery... what a great idea.
The new space is going to be pretty cool... long lot that runs along side Bouldin Creek. There are currently two trailers... Shuggies (Burgers and Seafood) and Torchies... best tacos in town.
I visited yesterday for the first time and decided to try Shuggies... had a traditional burger and fries... $7 range... but for an additional $0.50 I decided to fly first-class and upgrade to ice cream battered onion rings. Pretty darn tasty.
Bob, one of the owners, was super cool about checking-in with us and making sure that we had napkins, our orders were correct, etc. Sounds like they might be adding a 3rd trailer... something along the lines of dessert. But they want to make sure that any addition to the park will have the same hours as Shuggies and Torchies... so they'll probably be adding it themselves (rather than asking Hey Cupcake or Flip Happy to join them... sounds like they talked to both).
There were very few picnic tables outside but there was a covered area that was decent sized but oddly empty of tables. Bob explained that the city is having to re-inspect this area because of some minor changes. So that should be open for seating soon. Looks like there's a stage all up in there... should be cool.
It struck me as odd how many cars were parked in the lot given how few folks were eating... I should have asked Bob about this but it may be that there were construction guys working on improvements and/or maybe the lot is still being used by adjacent businesses.
All in all, a good experience... but it looks like this place will soon turn into something really special... a great fall Saturday afternoon destination. -

Shuggie's: the younger brother that was always standing in your older more famous brother's shadow. Torchy's and Shuggie's are now side by side. Can Shuggie's compare? Will I be let down or will I be dazzled?
It is pretty much common knowledge that I love Torchy's. I took Mouse, my puppy dog, to Torchy's yesterday for the usual Green Chili Pork Tacos. Today, I went sans hungry dog and ordered the Shuggie's Classic with Cheese and Fries. It is common knowledge that I love my burgers and fries. I consider myself a burger and fries expert eater.
For a Sunday afternoon, this place was hustling. I found a seat, and waited for my food to be delivered. In the mean time, 4 strangers asked if they could sit with me. "Sure, no problem." My food came, and it looked tasty. The strangers sitting with me stared longingly at me fries. I turned away so I wouldn't feel guilty about not offering them a taste. My fries. Mine. Mine. Mine. I love my fries.
These are the BEST fries I have had in a very long time. The outside is hot and crunchy. Seasoned but not salty. These are awesome fries. Did I mention that they are battered in beer? They are up there with Chick-fil-a fries. They make me smile. These are worth every calorie.
Now to the burger. The burger was a nice size on a buttery soft bun. I appreciate nice buns. I did ask for "no additional butter" on mine so it wasn't quite as greasy as it could be. The burger was decent, but it didn't have the same effect that Torchy's Green Chili Pork Taco has on me. My life didn't change with this burger. Don't get me wrong. It was a good burger, and a very fair price for a burger that size. It just didn't set itself off from other burgers I had. I can't explain why, but there was just something missing.
A few tips: Dirt. Everything is on dirt. If you wear flip flops, you will inevitably have really dirty and disgusting feet.
It is Summer in Texas. That means bugs. Flying biting bugs.
BYOB. I will next time.
They are dog friendly. Bring some water for Fido. I think the owner or manager or someone of importance came by to say "Hi!" to my dog. I thought he was just another customer until he went into the Torchy's Trailer.
Overall, Torchy's is the better of the two brothers, but I cannot deny Shuggie's 5 stars. The fries are just that awesome; plus, they are dog friendly. Mm.... Beer Battered Fries. -

I live in Northwest Austin. So the question with Shuggie's becomes..."Is the burger worth the drive?"
My answer is..."nah."
The meat could have used more seasoning. Although the shake was tasty.
I still rate Willy O's and Mighty Fine as better burgers. -

Went to the Trailer Park Eatery last night for their anniversary and experienced it for the first time. I've eaten at Torchy's before back when the arrangement was less formal and its pretty good (a little overpriced?) but good. Shuggies was delicious - right on the money for the size of the burger. We got the slider combo and an EZ rider, completely ignoring my body's cry of "Noooooooooooooo.... I'm going to get you for this later!!"
Mine was delicious -- the bun great, the sliders had great flavor (despite the thinness of the patty), and it was the perfect amount of food. My man had the EZ Rider with chili and cheese and green chilis and everything it takes to make your gastrointestinal tract go BOOM. It was so huge he had to take an eating break! The toppings were just delicious (I might have snuck a bite when he wasnt looking) and worked really well together.
I love the outside environment -- agree with Carrie C. that its nothing like a real trailer park -- but the concept is very Austin and I like having that many choices in a small area vs. having to drive around to find "your favorite taco truck".
If this were NOT in the trailer park eatery, well i might not bring out of town visitors here just because the burger was good, but not "I'm gonna crave that flavor" great. Since it's such a unique concept however, my guess is i'll be hitting up shuggies sometime in the near future. Right before we go to chicken shit bingo of course. -

Part of the reason I got my "Hog" was so that I could "cruise" around with my "Old Lady" on the back and go to "Biker Bars."
Pulling into the South Austin Trailer Park & Eatery feels like home when you've been on the road since West Gate and Stassney.
(In my mind) there is always a fire burning in the massive fire pit and Miss Rosie* always has a hot pot of Joe on for ya.
Before you even kill the 150cc's of pure raw power on your "Cruiser," the folks inside the Shuggie's trailer are throwin' a hand-pressed puck of 100% meaty heaven on the grill for you. They've got (nearly) a dozen different ways to slap together a burger and you can bet your sweet leather chaps each and every one is going to be a delight past the lips.
This particular road trip, "My Old Lady" and I both went for a couple of Shuggie's Classics. This is a simple sampling of back-yard grilling goodness. She doesn't eat all of the bun, 'cause she really likes the meat.
There are a bit too many Urban Soccer Transports kickin' up dust in the parking lot of late, but this little haven of Airstreams and hay bales will always be a stop for this weary traveler when he makes his way into the 04.
*I can neither confirm nor refute the existence of anyone named "Miss Rosie" at the SATPE. -

The burger I got was pretty good - the one with the fried bacon and stuff on it, but the damn thing was drowning in ketchup. The only place I've ever had a burger in Texas with that dastardly ketchup on it is McDonalds so minus a star for Shuggies.
The atmosphere is absolutely abysmal in that "mommy, why is that man's hair highlighted?" way. A "trailer park" for yuppie fools that would shit their shorts if a real trailer park opened up on their own blocks. As much as I despise the concept, the disgusting cutsiness of the whole operation and the dickheads, I did really enjoy that burger. It was a fine burger and probably will be very very good if I remember to tell the lady to hold the ketchup.
I also saw a little girl licking a cupcake that looked like a giant dog turd so that was pretty cool too. -

Listen up, South Austin! The people brought us Torchy's have filled the burger joint-shaped void in our hearts and it is called Shuggie's.
The cheeseburger I ordered was one of the best I've had in a long time, the meat was nice and juicy and it was perfectly accented by a pepper-flecked bun. The fries were also top notch- they were crispy on the outside, with just the right texture on the inside.
My sweetheart had the combo platter (shrimp, catfish, hush puppies, fries, and pineapple coleslaw). From what I tasted, the seafood really hit the mark as well and, judging from his empty plate, I think my bf would agree with me as well. :)
All in all, I'd say you're not going to be disappointed at Shuggie's and I predict another successful venture for Mike and Bob of Torchy's fame.Listed in: My Neighborhood

Not bad. Not great. Others who have praised the buns are quite right. They are the yum. They are buttered. This is not health food. The burger is big and clearly made by a hand. It's flat and griddle-fried and pretty greasy, which is to say, it's a burger. So relax, enjoy, and schedule a trip to the gym.
The setting is picnic tables on dirt right by the road. With mosquitoes. So it really made me feel like I was a kid again, eating a sloppy poverty burger sitting on a table by the road with my bare feet covered in dirt, going back to the trailer house for drinks. Fun!
Seriously, it's not a bad burger-n-fries, but it's not even close to the level of Torchy's. The staff is friendly, including the owner who came by and checked on us, as well as the beguilingly attractive tatooed vixen in the trailer (who previously was at Hey Cupcake and was the sole reason I bought those things on several occasions). -

Sooo, a new endeavor for the guys from Torchy's!! All I can say is, yess!! They finally heard my plea for queso topped fries!!! Pretty much one of the yummiest, most Delicious combos I 've had in a loooong time!!
Good ol' green chile queso from Torchy's tops off beer battered, crunchy fries, and just for the heck of it, some bacon crumbles on top!!
The menu items are opposite of anything you'd find at a Torchy's: hamburgers, onion rings, cat fish, po' boys... Oh & BTW, a chicken fried BLT!! Ya, deep fry anything & it's going to be fab!! And, I've fallen in love with the malts... So yummy!!! It's great that these two (Torchy's & Shuggies) are next to one another, it's the best of both worlds!! Great place to head to for late night munchies!!
And what 's more enjoyable than sitting outside watching the creek or playing some ping pong!?!?!?!?
I heart this new location!! -
Review from Dawn M.
I had a mad desire to cheat on my diet with a big, sloppy brunch. I brought the boys to Shuggie's with the idea to eat bad and maybe get a bit tipsy. I came prepared with a bottle of Prosecco, ready to make some mimosas in the disgusting Texas heat.
I had browsed the menu online, so I knew what I wanted - chicken and waffles baby. We ordered, and I was a bit sticker shocked when we got our total. Ok, ok...this better be good. We sit down and wait for a bit. Our food arrives and I'm surprised they bring my husband a small cup. Wait, he ordered the shrimp and grits I'm thinking. It WAS his shrimp and grits in a queso cup. I felt sad his portion was tiny and he said he only had 3 shrimp total. So I dig into my waffle and chicken. It was alright, not good, not bad. I chunked the ginormous slab of butter off my plate, but it had already done the job and left my waffle soggy. The chicken wasn't anything to crow about, but it was easy to eat being "tender-style."
Our other companion got the french toast. He liked it, except for the raisins in the bread.
Shuggie's should put out a descriptive menu of brunch at the location, not just the names of the items.
Overall, I felt it was slightly overpriced for trailer food. $2.50 for OJ in a small glass is overkill. The food was decent and the parking lot is a clusterfuck. I felt bad my diet cheat was so lackluster. Meh. -

Hands down the best burger and onion rings in town. I've had The Rambler (minus the chicken fried part of the chicken fried bacon), The Original and The 5th Wheel. The Rambler is my favorite by far because I never would have thought to put smoked Gouda and BBQ with bacon on a burger, but the result is soooooooo delicious. Portions are big so think about splitting because I always eat too much and leave wishing I would have had the self control to stop sooner. I tried the Slider Sampler today which was three sliders and it was a slightly more manageable portion of food.
The onion rings are in a thicker than normal batter and they have a great crunch to them which is far better than the soggy rings I've had at other places.
My advice? Make sure to bring your own beer and split a burger if you're a light eater. -

Not sure this placed should be judged on it's veggie burger (see 1-star reviews), as it has some of the best beef burgers around. They really don't cut any corners for being a trailer- big patty, bacon, great cheese selection, and buttery buns- plus the fries are way better than anything from P.T. or any of the 34 new burger places in town.
But I'm writing this today because I had brunch there earlier and it was absolutely amazing. The chicken and waffles were perfect - not traditional (like KFC), but 2 white meat strips (like Chik). My girl had the migas plate and they do them more 'over well' than scrambled and come with bacon, hash browns, fruit, and cheese grits.
The menu's changed so much since they reopened, that I feel like the older reviews aren't that relevant - go for brunch and bring your ice chest of bloody marys and mimosas. It's pretty much a no-brainer if your crew is drinking. -
Review from Jeff K.
Based largely on the strength of Yelp's positive reviews for it, I paid Shuggie's my first visit the other night ... and liked it so much that I went back the following night as well. Having lived in New York and eaten at the famous Shake Shack often, I am a major burger snob, and I have yet to find any Austin burger -- with the exception of P. Terry's and Casino -- that measure up. Hut's? Overrated beyond belief. Dirty Martin's? Ditto. Shuggie's, however, was amazingly flavorful, and accompanied by onion rings that are, without question, the best in town. On my other visit, I sampled the catfish. Also astoundingly good.
My sole complaint about the place would be the speed of service, which is also my sole complaint about the adjacent Torchy's. I know they do everything from scratch, but surely there's some way to get stuff out more quickly than 15-20 minutes -- and this was during off-peak periods where they weren't crammed with orders. -
Review from Edison c.
Sometimes people can't understand why anyone would like Taco Bell over any 'real' taco place. I tell them I suspect the reason is not because those people consciously know that Taco Bell makes superior tacos - it's because Taco Bell is actually a different genre of food (i.e. Not Actually Mexican). It's ok if they like it - but they should just accept that it is like comparing apples to oranges.
Shuggies is not quite that low on the food totem pole of burgers (i.e. like MdDonalds vs home bbq, or... Taco Bell vs. Torchy's) but it's pretty low. They also have milkshakes & a veggie burger & seafood products here, but I did not have any.
The fries were overfried in I-know-not-what.
Shug's would get the 1 star except that their people were very friendly and prompt, and beat the hell out of the Torchy's folks next door in terms of speediness.
I recommend these guys - if you can't wait to cram calories in your bod on the Torchy's line. -

Chicken Fried BLT. YES. so wrong but oh so right... battered bacon, fried up nicely on a soft fresh roll. lettuce, tomatoes, with a tasty jalapeno relish. oh man this was so good. the battered fries were perfect and the jalapeno hush puppies were delicious. the wife had a burger that was super good as well. good place to take the kids or a group of friends since there are so many options with Torchy's being right there too.. the shaded outdoor eating area was nice. i'll definitely be going back. hopefully soon.

Well, the burger was great. Peppery, which gave it a great flavor, and you could tell it was handmade. The fries were tasty, too, nice and big. I picked up on my lunch hour and brought it back to work to eat, and it was really tasty. I'd like to go again and eat there just to check out the vibe a little more. The folks working in the trailer were really friendly and helpful.

I was at a dinner party on Sunday night where I met Mike, one of the owners of Shuggie's. As an aside, he owns Torchy's too. He told me about the new place, and I was immediately intrigued.
This is a new burger joint, but it meshes nicely with the framework of the South Austin scene. You place your order at an airstream trailer and eat in an outdoor but covered seating area. The burgers are fantastic! Nice and juicy, not overdone, and huge. One of the best burgers I have had in Austin. The fries and onion rings are amazing as well. If you are up for a real guilty pleasure, get a shake too.
I gave this 5 stars. In reality, it probably deserves 4.5 as the outdoor seating made things a little warm despite the overhead fans circulating air. This is the perfect place for having a great burger once the weather cooperates a bit. -

had it on friday night at 9:30pm.
awful! the burger was ok - but they forgot to give me the fries with my burger. the onion rings & hush puppies that my husband ordered were burnt and dry on the inside.

We went there after reading a review naming them as having the best veggie burger in town. The seemed very confused when I ordered one. All they have is a mushroom veggie sandwich. They also do not seem to serve seafood. I guess the menu has changed. I really wanted to sit in the nice outdoor trailer park but too bad for me.

Got an email last week that Shuggies was starting up a brunch menu this weekend, and made the trek over there on Saturday to give it a try. We were definitely NOT disappointed. First of all, the service was really great. Quick, and the chef even came out to make sure we were happy with our food. I had the Texas Pecan French Toast - one thick texas toast covered in pecans, and browned up just enough on the outside that it remained soft on the inside. Served with a nice dollop of butter on the top, some fruit and syrup on the side. Super rich and delicious. The hubby got the migas and was not disappointed. It was served with some grits which he also enjoyed. Our little one got the homemade doughnuts, and they were delicious. Fresh, hot and served covered in cinnamon and sugar. Fresh squeezed oj rounded out the meal. We loved it, and will definitely head back to try some more of what they have to offer. The brunch menu didn't have a ton of options on it - but what we tasted was really great. Looking forward to heading back to try some other options soon.

Jesus, if you're listening. Please don't make THAT many more great burger places in Austin. I swear, there are already SOO many and it's hard to choose sometimes. That or they're so good that i'll eat them more than once a week and i can't have that. I browsed their menu online and picked up lunch for my friend and I. She was hoping for a veggie burger but, their online menu stated they just had a veggie sandwich. When i got their, they had revised their menu and added a panko crusted black bean burger. She was stoked! I opted for the rambler. One of my dreams had been answered by shuggie's. A burger with smoked gouda! If you're not familiar, the rambler has smoked gouda, grilled onions, house made bbq sauce, chicken fried bacon, mayo, lettuce and tomato. We also got the fries and onion rings and I got a chocolate peanut butter shake. I know, i'm secretly a fat a**. It's no secret. Ok, the onion rings were beyond tasty and they gave us a side of jalapeno ranch, which was delicious. The fries were tasty as well. My burger was superb but, honestly, i think the bbq sauce may have overpowered the gouda and that made me sad. The sandwich itself was delicious but, i was REALLY wanting to taste that cheese! The chicken fried bacon was a nice touch as well. My friend said her burger hit the spot as well. I'm definitely going to have a few more things on their menu soon!
