IT'S MOVED!

I don't know how to change the contact information on here, but ALL the contact info is wrong.  It is now located at: 2900 Broadway
Oakland, CA 94612.  The website is: http://www.shugahillca.../ and the number is 707-874-8428 which is actually wrong on their website.  Whoops.

I've only had their food at Real Fest but my husband and I LOVED it.  I'm not at all a fan of BBQ like him, but their sauce was great, the ribs fell off the bones.  It came with a side of collard greens (SALTY HAPPINESS) and the SILKIEST potato salad I've ever had.  I know people have had trouble accessing the sides that they want, but I totally want to get them to cater my husband's 30th birthday because they are that good and pretty reasonably priced as far as BBQ goes.

I go to Grocery Outlet religiously.  So I can't miss this gigantic purple RV-catering-contraption thing that runs noisily on generators in front of Grocery Outlet when I shop there. The guy working said they are there Mon-Sat but take Sunday off to go to church.

I've been pretty full or too busy to stop and eat in the past, but last weekend I had to try a bunch of their sides to see what was good.  The guys working there were sweethearts and one of them gave me his number.  I don't think I'll call him, but now I have a Shuga Hill hook-up, you know what I mean?

I got 3 sides- and no meat, so this isn't the most well rounded review, but I will say the Mac and Cheese, Sweet Potatoes, and Red Beans and Rice were all just...decent.  Not great, not horrible, but probably not something I will crave and get excited about the next time I see the big purp vehicle.

The only thing I finished when I got home was the mac and cheese, mostly because I just love m&c, not because it was super-special.  In fact, I didn't finish my other 2 sides, I just wasn't that hungry and not feeling the food.

The other thing about getting 3 sides was it was sort of expensive.  Contrasted with all I get for about $9 right inside the grocery store, it seemed like a lot.  In the future I might get some meat and 2 sides.  Also they use Styrofoam, Save the Planet, Shuga Hill!  Maybe it's time to go green with your packaging?

I was driving near by the truck early after noon so I said to myself, " OK, I think I should give second chance."
So, I ordered a large BBQ chicken.
This time, they had baked beens, mac & cheese and candy yams.
But there was something else that I've never seen.

Me, " What's the heck is the red round things?"

Black Man in the truck said, " Sir?"

Me Pointed out the other man making something with the red round things.

The Man, "Oh! This is a Red Velvet."

Me, "What's Red Velvet? I know Blue."

The Man, "Ha! You don't know what's red velvet?"

Me, "Nope, I've never seen and never heard of it."

The Man, "It's a cake, Sir."

The other man was smiling at me and putting white cream on the red round things.

Me, "Uh-Huh! Ok, I see, I'll be back."

The Man, " Hey! Sir! Hold on. I'll give you a FREE sample. So wait a minute."

Me, " What? Free sample? For real?"

The Man, " YES! So, let him finish."

So, I wait for few minutes.

He handed to me a slice of the Red Velvet.

I was like ........ !

So, i got a large chicken + baked beens, mac & cheese and candy yams = 12 bucks
I am really glad I went back there to give the BBQ truck second chance.
Such a difference from my last visit !
People were very nice & friendly.
I'll be back.

One thing is that the location smells very STINKY like a puke.
Really.

I had to have the Red Velvet. $3.50
It's a bomb.
My first time Red Velvet was a good one.

She wore red velvet
Ooo Ooo Ooo~
Reder than velvet was the night
Softer than satin was the light
From the stars

She wore red velvet
Reder than velvet were her eyes
Warmer than May her tender sighs
Love was ours

Ours a love I held tightly
Feeling the rapture grow
Like a flame burning brightly
But when she left, gone was the glow of

She wore Red velvet
But in my heart there'll always be
Precious and warm, a memory
Through the years
And I still can see blue velvet
Through my tears

Ummmmm Red Velvet.

According to Chewy Gomez on 106 KMEL, he states "Just look for the purple truck for good slamming catfish and red velvet."

Aight, Chewy, well see wassup your spot.

So me and Jake the Snake headed off into Emery Town, to see what's good with this spot here. Apparently Grandpa and Grandma Cox must be proud of their grandson to head up a business consistent of 30 years of service catering good old soul food from the roots of Memphis, Tennessee. We ordered the following items:

-1 order of Hotlink Combo (consisting of: hotlinks, fries, and cornbread)
-2 orders of Red Velvet cake

The hotlinks were decent, wet and somewhat filling on the meat portions but not too bad. The fries were run of the mill fries, nothing spectacular of the sort. The red velvet cake was pretty damn good, light and creamy with that fluffy cream cheese after taste it sure was worth a try. I prefer Sprinkles (Newport Beach, Ca) but that's just my preference, they probably have a similar recipe to Susiecakes (Long Beach, Ca.) after thinking about it and comparing the two.

Overall, we spent probably $14.00 with tax altogether. The gentleman manning the grill and taking charge was definitely a respectable fellow and seemed to be courteous to all of his customers. I'm coming back here to get a better idea of the ribs and chicken in the future. Otherwise it's good to see my old local spot, starting to step their game up in terms of food offerings for everyone.

The Purple Truck, Red Velvet, what's next the Green (Cannibus Cuisine)  Bus?

I came to this place as part of the Charles Chocolates Movie Night.  I was one of the first ones to order, and that is very key to this place.  It takes awhile for your food.  Maybe a bit longer than a restaurant when its really busy.  Keep that as a frame of reference, and you might not bail on this place.

If you are on your lunch hour and you are in a hurry, give this place the quick kick of the tires... if they say they are out of a lot of things and there are a lot of people milling around... get out!!

Yes, as others here have attested, they do run out of food.  I heard many late comers crumbling about this long after I had polished off my beef links, mac n cheese, and corn bread.  It was some of the best corn bread I've had.

The servers are real friendly, but of course, I had a smile on my face and got everything I ordered.

So, if you follow my plan.. you'll have a 4-star (or more meal)... See if there is a large line... if there is, there is going to be a long wait for your food.  If the line is small or non-existent, don't mess around with your order.  If they start telling you they are out of every side you had your heart set upon, well I'd try for another day.  The sides are just as good as the meat.

After eating Soul Food througout the Bay Area I often think it is one of those things which the normal folk just want to say they like. ....I don't know,  lemme put it this way, it seems to me that Soul Food is the equivelent of what House of Nanking is for Chinese Food.

So this place has set up shop inside the Gross Out (Grocery Outlet ) parking lot. Pretty impressive rig, .

Ordered the turkey burger with side of Black Eyed peas and rice.

First off, if this place was next door to my house, where I could order my food, walk over to my stoop, pour a glass of lemonade, it might be ok. What I am saying is this place takes a long time to turn over an order. In fact I ordered, stood outside for a while, decided to shop inside Gross Out, stood in line after grabbing some groceries, came outside, :"sir you order will be up in a couple minutes"......well, it wasn't done for another 8 minutes. . I thought to myself, damn, 20 mins? but also, maybe they hickory smoke that sucker! ....So I get home and try the burger. Nope, not hickory smoked  does not even taste flame grilled. ..it pretty much tastes like bun and the  thousand island type sauce they used liberally over the burger., no burger taste at all .....After being a bit diappointed from the burger, I turned to the peas and rice. ..it is now an hour after i got home and I am still looking at the peas and rice as after a bite I was not really impressed....

While I am not sure if their true BBQ dishes are good, and since I don't eat red meat . I guess I will never know. ..all i do know is that it was a pretty equally disappointing meal, not only a crappy way to blow $7, but also a crappy way to waste  20 mins

Soul food from a truck?  My coworkers and I stumbled upon Shuga Hill during lunch the other day and decided that we had to try it.  We placed our orders and sadly, they were out mac and cheese, which I had been craving, so I opted for corn bread as my second side order instead.

After waiting 25 minutes to get our food, I was told that they were also out of corn bread.  Couldn't they have told me that 25 minutes earlier?  Ok, how about some yams?  Nope, out of that too.  When I asked which sides WERE available, the woman rudely told me I could have a soda.  Um, I want my side, not a soda.  I was told I could have black eyed peas.  Ok, fine.  Well, the woman took my box of food into the back of the truck to get my black eyed peas, which, for some reason took another 10 minutes.  When they finally had our orders ready, they were shoved through the window and the screen was slammed down in our faces.  They also forgot to give my coworker her soda and she had to go back for it.  Here's the kicker - the black eyed peas I waited an extra 10 minutes for ended up being COLD.

The food ended up being delicious (catfish, greens, and black eyed peas), but I just don't know if it's worth the attitude and the wait.  Another woman waiting in line said that it usually doesn't take that long to get your food so maybe they were having an off day, but that still doesn't excuse the level of bitchiness that we were served.

Tried their food at the Eat Real fest.  Ribs were fall off the bone good and potato salad and collard greens were great too!  One of the highlights of the festival in my book.  Can't wait to go over and dine on more of their offerings.  Yummy!!!

I HEART comfort food.

After venturing to the taco truck across the street and enjoying it, I decided to be adventurous give this place a go. I got the regular rib plate (comes with 2 sides) and a slice of red velvet cake (what... I was already there! Might as well :P)

I started with my green beans. I wasn't that impressed, maybe it's just not my style. I like my green beans with bits of onion and ham which I always thought pretty standard. Ah well, not a the best start. Then I hit the cornbread. YUMMMMMMM! Buttery and cornmeal goodness. You know it's good when it falls apart when you break off a piece. Then I had the ribs. Again, tasty! The meat just falls apart and the BBQ sauce was solid. Finally the red velvet cake. Moist and with that cream cheese frosting that all red velvet cakes must have to be respectable.

So 3 out of 4. I'll just try a different side next time. The portions are pretty good, I have enough to keep me happy for a few meals for sure.

Wow!  What a surprise!  I work 2 blocks from this place and it took me a year to go here.  Man, that makes me sad!  Although I would be 20 lbs heavier if I started going there a year ago.   Great ribs!  I should have asked for them spicy, though...  Good mac and cheese and good yams.  Our food took about 10 mins to come out and they were really friends.  Oh, the red velvet cake was awesome!!!  A friend got the burger and it was okay and another friend got the pork sandwich and wasn't too happy about it.  Lots of fat and gristle...  The ribs were great, though!

"OMG, HAVE YOU BEEN TO SHUGA HILL?!?...YOU KNOW?? THAT BIG OL' PURPLE BUS/TRAILER BBQ PLACE?!?...YOU KNOW! THE ONE OFF 40th ST!!" -- i ask every bbq fan this question.

shuga hill is no joke. everytime i see that obnoxious purple/pink trailer thingie i start to drool. the bbq sauce is sweet, vinegary, and the spice is just right. i would recommend their links in the hot bbq sauce - they give you a sh*tload. for side dishes i would recommend the mac+cheese, yams [my bf HATES yams but loves them from here], and their baked beans. i have yet to dry their baked goods but i know they have a piece of red velvet cake with my name on it.

the only downside to shuga hill is that not everything on their menu is available everyday but i always manage to find something else to fill me up.

its a rainy day, and i just finished eating from here. I'm so happy about this place, their food is so damn good, if you haven't tried it yet you need to.

i ordered the red snapper with mac&cheese and the cornbread, and i got the bf the two way combo: the ribs & links wit mac &cheese with beans and candied yams.

the red snapper was flavorful and not greasy like other places and so juicy too. the cornbread was a hot and was a great size serving, large:) the ribs fell off the bone and was so tasty and the links were soft, usually i would enjoy eating the links soft like that but it was so good, and the candied yams were so tasty and sweet.

overall stars..i loved this place, ima fan of SHUGA HILL CATERING now and i will be back and trust if you have not ate here yet let me repeat myself "IF YOU HAVEN'T TRIED IT YET YOU NEED TO!"

Oh god I ate too much and I'm so happy right now.  I've been searching for this big purple truck for weeks because its not actually on San Pablo, its on the other side of Pack~N~Save.

The BBQ ribs are spectacular.  I, for one, can't ever get enough sauce, and what was left in my to-go container went right into a jar in the fridge for later!  The greens were reliably tasty and the baked sweet yams were heavy on the sugar & spices, but that's perfect for me.

But best of all... the too-hot-to-wolf-down-giant-slice of CORNBREAD thats so good I plan to go back everytime I have to go to the grocery store and grab as a snack.  I'll definitely be making this a regular stop.

Tried it out this weekend and discovered that "Memphis-style BBQ" means "swimming in BBQ sauce." A bit too much for me (I'll ask for sauce on the side next time) -- but the meat was fall-off-the-bones tender, smokey and tasty.

The blackeyed peas and rice were also smokey and flavorful. The mac and cheese was also tasty - -albeit very basic.

I wanted to try the chicken and the chicken wings, but they were out of it. In fact, on the day I went, they were out of half of the items on the menu. Ah, well. While there were no lines, there was a steady stream of folks coming by to order food -- many seemed to be repeat customers, which is a good sign.

Not a place I'm cravin' to try again, but I'm glad I did try it.

I've eaten food from this large truck twice and both times I've been quite impressed.  First meal:  Fried red snapper was very good - crunchy, well seasoned, moist, hot and delicious.  The baked beans were surprisingly meaty, although a bit sweet for my taste.  The green salad was just average.  Second meal:  I had the ribs in mild sauce - very tender, fairly smokey, and good sauce (next time I'll try it without sauce).  The greens were surprisingly tasty, in fact, some of the best mean greens I've ever had; not sure exactly what seasoning they're using, but it works.  Potato salad was good.  There is a bit of a wait between order and pick up, as you'd expect since the fried food is fried to order, and it always takes time for any BBQ joint to carve up and plate food.

I will definitely be trying more menu items.  So far, I find the BBQ ribs better than Everett & Jones (San Pablo Avenue).

I very rarely give five stars for food places, so four stars means I recommend it and I'll be going back.

After coming from Ikea, I saw this place and wondered what it was about. I checked out some reviews on my cell, and u-turned to check it out for myself. I got the regular rib plate w/ mac & cheese and black eyed peas with rice. The ribs were good. The portion sizes were good too and all for under 10 bucks. The mac and cheese was okay, nothing to make me wanna go back, tho; the beans were ok too. I did like the ribs, they were meaty, tender, and not fatty; the mild sauce was good. I'll be back to try some more stuff, like the seafood. What can i say, i love trying food sold outta vehicles parked at random locales. I'm not quite as big of a fan as other reviewers, but I'm willing to go back and give it anotha try.

Ok, I have been here at least twice this weekend and each time the food was consistently good! I had passed by and saw the purple truck on a couple of occasions and didn't pay too much attention.. I mean, you don't really see too many BBQ and fish etc trucks selling food nowadays (in my case never). But I made a mental note of it. Skip to Friday, when I passed by and checked out the menu. Not bad! Ended up getting a two way combo, ribs and chicken. Sides were Greens, Black eyed Peas and rice, and Candied Yams. Everything was wonderful! chicken was juicy, ribs tender, sides were homemade and no doubt made from scratch and very good (cause yams and greens can go wrong in the wrong hands, we ALL know that). Then again on Saturday, found myself in the same area decided to try the BBQ sliced beef dinner. This time sides were Pinto Beans and Rice, Greens and Potato salad. Again, fabu! Been was tender, really good sauce and a good amount for the money.  They also have other items such as fish, turkey and chicken wings etc. It's also a decked out truck, from what I can see they have the ovens and fryers etc all packed in, and it's very clean (cause if your like me those things count). Plus, they also take credit cards, which I wish I had known the first time before I went to Pak N Save and pulled money out the first time, but that's cool. Hopefully the next time I go i'll be able to get a milkshake, as I guess they were out of stuff last time. So, if your near Pak N Save (which is where it parks on Emery Street) or just wanna try someplace new, I highly recommend it.

BBQ,  Fish, Turkey/chicken wings, Burgers/Chicken Sand etc.
Cakes avail by slice (I think you have to place order ahead of time for a full size)
Lots of side dish options
From about $5-20.00 From what I remember

One of my favorite lunch places as of right now.  It's right around the corner from my work so we go on lunch to get some amazing BBQ business.  The past few times they've been out of the bbq chicken (which means it's in HIGH demand).  I've had the chicken sandwich which is fresh grilled chicken and absolutely amazing. The pintos and rice are tasty.  The BBQ Beef is fantastic also.  All sides are made from scratch and I dont think you can find anything better within a 30 block radius.  Portion size is generous and the prices aren't too expensive.  The red velvet cake and the Peach cobbler are divine.  There's normally a little bit of a wait because everything is made as fresh as possible, but it's well worth the wait!  I'll be back there tomorrow for the chicken (they already know we're coming hahaha).  If you're in the area and see the big purple trailer truck, stop by and try it out.  You will NOT be disappointed.

the chicken wings were indeed bomb this afternoon when i finally woke up. we headed back to the truck for a little late lunch. i had wanted to get the smoked turkey wings but they were out. normally this kind of thing would piss me off but i am pleased that you will be getting the freshest food possible off of the shuga hill truck. i opted for the bbq beef strips which were AMAZING. they were fat chunks of slow cooked beef smothered in shuga hill's signature bbq sauce. the meat was so tender and i can't begin to describe how good the sauce was. the sides i got were the macaroni and potato salads. both were excellent. the dessert that i had today was the german chocolate cake which wasn't your traditional german chocolate at all. it was bundt cake with a chocolately german chocolate filling. i loved this interpretation of it. i'm bummed that i will have to wait until i am in the area again to partake. hopefully the turkey wings are available.
