I went here last night for the Cubed & N crowd PHIT show. It was was fun and entertaining even though none of my suggestions got used.
So here is a spectator's review of the space. The space is very small giving everyone the equivalent of being front and center for the performance. I am not so sure I would call this "intimate" as much as cramped. We were glad the air got turned on after the first performance and the house was only half full at best. The place looks like it has had a fresh coat of paint recently and newish chairs/seating area. But I am not sure if it is the best space for a improv comedy show since the closeness of the seating makes picking volunteers a little dicey. Basically you are going to only get picked if you are sitting on the outside of a row.
On the whole it is a good space for small budget shows and I will probably go to shows here in the future.
This is the type of theatre that I would have never ever came across if it weren't for the dedication that goes into seeing your friends perform during The Fringe Festival every year. My friend had two parts in a four part play about women in war. so I decided to go and support.
The Shubin is a really intimate theatre, and by that I mean it's freakishly small. while this does get you a little too close to the people around you, it also gets you close to the overall production that's going on. it felt like I was sitting next to my friend during her parts, and it really felt like the audience was involved even though we had no speaking parts. That's the type of intimacy that you can only get out of a small theatre like here.
Aside from Fringe shows the Shubin puts on a lot of Improv shows. the listings for a lot of the upcoming shows really looked worth checking out.
I like the fact that when you rent the Shubin, it's yours for the whole time of you occupancy. Recent upgrades to the flooring and window treatments have made the place looks ten times better than last year. Not that it was bad last year, but it is a great place to produce on a dime. I have worked in the space on three separate occasions and will most likely produce there again!
