Short's is one of my favorite brewpubs. They do a wide range of brews, and they do them well. Joe Short is also one of the most adventurous brewers around. S'more Stout, Key Lime Pie Ale, Black Liquorish Lager, Bloody Beer... crazy ideas, but often crazy good. If you're a hophead go with the Huma. The Chocolate Wheat is my goto growler fix.
Food: Short's does deli sandwiches and pizza. That's pretty much it, but that's more than enough for me!
Service: Excellent bartenders and great owners. I could live here...
If you knew how far out of my way I drive to get a sandwich and a couple growler fills, you'd question my sanity... unless you've been here. -

Well, we went here on a lazy Sunday afternoon, on what I knew would be the long way to Petoskey. Yeah, it was out the way, but we were looking to expand our Northern MI pallet.
It was early Fall, and apparently Bellaire had just got done with some local festival. If you frequent Northern MI towns in the Summer, then you know that you can hit some lame festival every weekend from late May to late October, if you were so inclined. And one usually looks very much like the rest.
The streets were pretty empty. I guess we just missed all the fun, and the entire town was dead. I was ready to leave 10 minutes after we got there, and the irony in that, is this is the only reason we tried Shorts. My g/f and I our fans of Micro breweries, and I basically said "Well, it's a bit early for a beer, but if you want to try this place, we should probably do it now, because I doubt we'll be back this way anytime soon." We actually paced around the building a few times so I could finish my "morning" coffee while we made our decision to stop to grab a bite and a beer, or move on to Petoskey.. As a town, I felt Belarire defined tourist trap- very cute Michigan town without much to see or do.
Short's may have changed all that.
The first good sign was that it was only place showing signs of life in the area. It was actually kind of crowded during non-peak restaurant hours. We tried a a few beers--- and I mean the daring beers, like Right Brain, not the standard mico brew fare, and Short's did not disappoint. The beers were good, and Mexican style chips and cheese dip were had were great.
The one beer that did stand out was Bloody Mary beer. Spicy, but with a smooth finish.
So much for being a tourist trap. Now that my g/f can't find this beer online, I know we'll end up going back. -

I was pretty much in love with my cheese sandwich w/ avocado & tomato & chipolte sauce. Yum. Wish I had been in a beer mood, I hope I get a chance to return in the near future. I bet it'd be a rad place to catch some music. Ton's of seating, order at the bar.
*** If you don't like yuppies or hipster's steer clear, but it's actually a pretty family-friendly place, so don't hold back on that account. -

It's funny how you can just not know about a place one day, and then have the time of your life the next because of where you happen to be staying. My husband and I are in Northern Michigan, and, as we're always on the hunt for a good local brewery or brewpub, we decided to investigate some in the area.
Admittedly, I'd never heard of Short's before this trip, but we saw some of their beer at Boyne Country Provision yesterday and we looked them up. As this restaurant/bar was just about 40 minutes from where we were staying, we decided to make a day trip out of going to Bellaire and enjoying some beer!
First off, let me say that I love the design of this place. There's brick, there's wood, there's exposed beams, there's burnt-orange metal ... they all come together in a really awesome way that just makes your eyes look around and take it all in. There are two separate rooms (one by the bar with high-tops and another on a slightly lower level with long wooden low tables), but they almost feel like one big space, because there are cutouts in the brick that allows the atmosphere to just meld into one.
The beer was fantastic, unusual, creative, and strong! Maybe it's because I'm not used to day drinking (amateur here), but I was buzzed after half a sample of the Mama's Strawberry Milk (which has got to be the craziest beer I've ever tasted!). We got a couple of samplers and tried a lot of stuff. The only thing I was disappointed about not being able to try was the Chocolate Wheat, but they were out. I enjoyed the ESB, the Bellaire Brown, "The Magician" (Dark Red London Ale) and the aforementioned Strawberry Milk the most. Surprisingly, I wasn't as big a fan of their wheat beer -- it was just missing something, though I'm not sure what.
Their food was different and eclectic. We shared the crostini with herbed goat cheese and sweet and spicy tomato jam; a soup which had andouille sausage, corn, and cheese (what could be bad?), and a 9" plain cheese pizza which was fine, but nothing to shout about. What was obviously the main draw of this brewery wasn't necessarily the food itself, but the way the menu was created and the ideas put forth.(I also like the way it has a certain "snack bar" feel to it, as you've got to order your food at the bar and then you're given a number and it's brought to your table.)
Overall, probably the best brewpub I've ever been to. Their beer selection was outlandish, and I mean that in the best possible way. They seem very experimental and funky, and I am totally cool with that.Listed in: Something's Brewing

Short's has to be my favorite microbrewery....ever. I recently moved to NYC and took 20 six-packs of Short's with me. I will be back to Michigan soon to replenish my stock!
Good food, innovative tasty beer, and friendly staff. The Short family is in there regularly conversing with customers, etc.
My only gripe is that their kitchen closes early. We were in there on a Thursday night at 10pm and the kitchen was already closed. We ended up having to go next door to Lulu's for some food! -

We've been fans of Shorts ever since it opened seven years ago. Frequently, we park in Bellaire and do our 40 or so mile bicycle ride from there just so we can enjoy a post-ride pint or two, or pick up a growler. Shorts offerings are creative and the brewer is not afraid to experiment. But, the person who only drinks bland rice/corn beers (e.g. the national offerings heavily advertised) will still enjoy the "locals light". Our favorites are the chocolate wheat and humalupalicious (the latter being very floral and right up there with the Pacific NW beers I'm used to). Seasonal offerings like the Saison (on tap now) are also great, as it the spruce pilsner. The Soft Parade is a bit too much like Kool Aid for me, but if you like fruit in your beer, you'll enjoy it.
Food is always pretty good and a couple cuts above the usual pub fare. And, the recent cut outs of the brick wall will help blend the upper and lower spaces together. -

Out of the 10 Michigan breweries I've visited, Short's is tied for second with Dark Horse [and that's saying a lot]. Nestled in the quaint Bellaire, Short's is spacious, has a comfortable vibe, played a mix of indie music & was very inviting.
I've had all their bottled beers that are distributed in the SE part of the state, so my husband & I tried only things we'd never had before. I started out with the Chocolate Wheat which was a carmel-y porter - not spectacular, but solid. My husband started with the Anniversary Ale, made with blood organge and peppercorns and it was GOOD! For our second round he started with the Bananarama, which was dark, toasty & tasted like banana rum. I didn't really sip much of his, though, because I was too enamored with mine - the Key Lime Pie. I was pretty skeptical of this beer because I don't like very sweet beers, but WOW - full flavors of citrus and graham cracker, without being too sweet & nothing short of amazing. We picked up a growler of this for home.
Not only was the beer fantastic, but the food was great as well. We started out with the goat cheese bruchetta & it was incredible. We followed up with a pizza on special that had asparagus, feta and some other delicious items I no longer remember.
It was well worth the visit & we'll definitely find excuses to head up north & go back! -

Good beer, good food, worth a trip! For any of you, who aren't familiar with Short's Beer, they are known for their bold and innovative beer. The same can be said of their brewery. It is definitely an Indie vibe.
There are many, many different beers available on tap and a very impressive and unique menu for a brewery. Bananarama, key lime pie, strawberry shortcake, just to name a few. I would recommend ordering a flight or two of beer because they are all really worth a try. If I were to have one complaint, it would be that there was no waitstaff and you have to stand in line to order food and drink. I know that's not uncommon for a brewery, but that area gets really crowded and uncomfortable, and it becomes difficult to get your drink to your seat without spilling it.
If you happen to be anywhere near Bellaire, definitely stop in to Shorts! -

Ann Arbor, MI
I don't know quite what I expected. But Short's exceeded, in every way.
I live in Ann Arbor, and frequent Arbor Brewing Company frequently. I grew up in Royal Oak, so I'm familiar with the ROB, and the WAB.
Once a loyal Arbor Brewing Company gal... they do not hold a candle... not even a little votive candle to Short's.
I've gladly had me some Short's in a bottle, and was even lucky enough to drink a Soft Parade on draft at Ashley's in Ann Arbor. Being in Southeastern Michigan, making the trek to Bellaire to drink some beers seemed a little unorthodox.
That was, until, my dad announced that he was having his wedding in Glen Arbor, MI. in May of 2011. Was I excited to take the weekend off? Yeah! Was I excited to go to Lake Michigan? Absolutely. But to be honest, the first order of business was planning the trip up North, and how we could most strategically make it to Short's Brewing Company and still be to Glen Arbor in time for the wedding.
:)
The drive from Ann Arbor to Bellaire was 4-ish hours... lots of construction. Pulling into the back lot and turning the engine off was music to my ears, and as we exited the car, the manager on duty was right outside the door and said, "going to Short's?"... and showed us to the back door. Awesome.
My fiance went straight to the bathroom and I entered the bar area, totally excited but trying to act like I didn't just drive 4 hours for a pint. The bartender, Rhiannon, greeted me with a smile and asked me if I had been to Short's before. Now, normally if someone asked me that, I'd think they had me pegged as a tourist and were incessantly judging me. But this girl was genuine. She showed me the menu, explained the process of ordering, and immediately made me feel at home.
We ordered my favorite, a Humalupalicious, and he got his pale ale. We ordered food, my sandwich on Rhiannon's recommendation, which was really really yummy.
I decided to order a flight, because hell... why not. I went up to order, and Rhiannon says, "Melanie, what can I get for you and Dan?" Stunned that the bartender, who was taking care of a bar full of patrons just acknowledged my fiance and myself by name, I ordered, and promptly received my delicious drinks.
The beautiful day, accompanied by the delicious beer, accompanied by the impeccable service and hospitality of Rhiannon and the staff made our day unforgettable and incredibly special. We added on a couple of Growlers of Huma and Pale Ale for my dad's wedding reception :)
Thank you SO MUCH for making our trip, day, and weekend special. You guys rock, and kick the ass of your competitors downstate in both beer and service. Team Short's :D -

I'm not a big beer drinker but Short's has become a family stomping ground when I'm home to visit. We all meet up there for live music, awesome food and great micro-brews. I just tried their pumpkin brew but my favorite is definitely the Bellaire Brown. If you're lucky you'll be there on bacon mac 'n cheese night. :)

Short's is a true destination brew pub, and a truly special place. They always have an extraordinary array of beers on tap. Joe Short is a remarkably inventive brewer and most of his brainchildren are quite palate pleasing.
The menu varies quite a bit, but the soups are always good and we've never gone wrong with the pizza, either.
The staff are knowledgeable and friendly, and the crowd is always festive and congenial.
My wife and I make it here as often as we can. -

Definitely a place to visit. Always a wide selection of unique brews which is constantly evolving. My personal favorite is Soft Parade.
Has a "hipster" sort of vibe in it's decor and atmosphere.
The live entertainment is always unique and fun as well. -

Ann Arbor, MI
This place has some dang good beer and if you need to figure out what you may like they give samples. The decor here is all original and very open. People come here as if it was a town hall to celebrate birthdays, lunch or whatever. The food is simple, but has quality.
Everytime I am in the area I make it a stop, but I live downstate. -

Very good microbrew...clearly caters to tourists as well as locals. An order at the bar affair, recently expanded from what I understand. Right downtown in Bellaire, a most pleasant downtown with several varied shops and restaurants.

Shorts is a fun brewery to visit. They have a huge list of brews on tap and we like to get the sampler to try a variety. I'm a big fan of Chocolate Wheat and The Magician.
They also have a deli which has nice appetizers, sandwiches, soups, and pizza. -

Where do I even begin....we usually stop in for beer and food when we're up at Schuss for the downhill season. It's tucked into the center of town and feels like a safe haven to duck into when the weather picks up and the snow starts to really fall. Live entertainment in the back room with some lounge chairs to sink into while you enjoy whatever libation you've chosen from their brewed world class offerings. Their pizza is the jam too. That means it's superb in case you don't follow by posts. Additionally, they offer flights off their beer menu in case you prefer to try absolutely everything they brew...this is where I reside folks. Their each great while you may not love them all. They also have a little game chest in case you want to spar against a friend over a game of chess at one of the hi-top tables with the inlaid checkerboards. I love this place and always enjoy catching them at the Michigan beer festivals. Support Michigan brewers and check this place out.

Joe Short is continually smashing crazy food flavors into a twelve ounce bottle. Peanut butter and jelly stout, key lime pie, plum rye, wtf? He's pretty hit or miss with the av ante guard, but his heart, head and heard are in the right place. Humalupalicous an amazing super hoppy IPA with a thick rich head, citrus notes, and heavy conifer bomb taste. You can find it almost anywhere that carries decent beer in the mitten. I'd review the rest of his beers, but they are all pretty damn good and deserve to be judged by you.
The brewery itself is a marvelous act of ninjaneering. Pretty sure that he uses old cheese making equipment to get his mash on. It's an amazing balancing act. Most beer machines like this wobble on three wheels and can barely keep up with the brew pubs demands. Joe seems to thrive under these conditions.
As far as the service goes, I never ever had a bad experience. The food is super straight, and i heard last night a friend say that it was the best sandwich of 2010 for him. I've read a few other reviews that write about rude service, but a certain level of understanding is in order. i have always had a blast and feel welcome there. What most people don't understand is that brewery folk drink pretty hard all the time, especially while behind the bar. It's called alcoholism. This leads to massive head crushing hangovers, severe intoxication on the job and a heavy emotional unbalance, which generally pisses of tourist who in turn hop on their mac book and spew all over the inter web how a bartender was rude to them. In all actuality he was probably just drunk and pissy. Then again, maybe they harbor angst towards the tourons who destroy the morrell beds, blow up their favorite beaches and pack down the powder. I'm just saying. My money is on the hangover. This is completely different from the crappy service you would receive at say,.... the WAB. Over optimism and cheery disposition can be down right depressing when you are half in the bag, so cool it out bro and slow down while your up north with a pint in your hand. -

Amazing beer! Great Atmosphere! I could find a thousand more things to exclaim about this northern michigan gem. The beer is always rotating with new specialty batches on tap. If you are lucky enough to catch a musician there, it will make the experience even better.
I will continue to make the 1.5 hour journey out of my way to this great place and hope some day there is a campground or friend with a place near by so I can get just one more sampler. -

I love everything about Short's. The food is great, the beer is great, the owner/brewer is great. The atmosphere is awesome and it's so fantastic that there's a performance space and Joe Short has such a dedication to live, local music. It just makes me so happy every time I see a young, driven entrepreneur doing everything right and succeeding in a place like Bellaire, MI. (It's beautiful up there, by the way.)

Chicago, IL
I love Shorts. Love as in, think about it often-wish I was closer-distance makes my palate grow fonder kind of love.
This coffee-house reminiscent brewery is tucked away towards the end of the quintessential main street in downtown Bellaire, a small town in northern Michigan. Surrounded by friendly people, mom and pop shops, this brewery shines.
The people that work here are always friendly and happy, offering their wealth of knowledge about the beer, the food, and the gorgeous surroundings (Torch Lake). The setting is casual - a bar to sit at, some random tables and a few old cadillac seats to cozy in to, with a music room to the left. They have live music most days, playing in the evening to get the crowd moving.
Now on to the beer, the most important part! With creative names, and hand drawn labels, this beer dances on your tongue. Each brew is as different as the next, some fruity, some smokey, some spicy, some full of hopes etc.... As mentioned by others, try a flight, you will learn that unexpected ingredients and hard work make the best tasting beer. The names of the beers are as creative as the taste, and its always hard to choose which 5 should be chosen for your flight. My personal favorite is the Soft Parade - its fruity, its light, and described as "perfect for the ladies that like wine", but I have known a man or two to pony up to the Soft Parade. If you prefer a darker beer, Bellaire Brown is sure to please, or for something lighter the HumaLupaLiscious is really good. I have yet to try their fall beers, but I would imagine their pumpkin beer would be stellar.
Last time I was here, I was delighted to learn that Shorts will be bottling by the end of the summer - I can only hope it makes it to Chicago! -

Holy underwear! This place is the cat's pajamas!
Great beer, and amazing variety, all of which is theirs. Get a flight, and you'll understand the depth and thoughtfulness of beer crafting that the brewmaster has put into every keg.
The Cheddar ale soup I had was delicious.
But my favorite part is the Ween-themed menu. I nearly sh*t my pants! I don't know the owner yet, but I think I'm in love. -

I love Short's and I'm not even a beer drinker! Tried "Funkin Pumpkin"; spicy and tasty. The soups are a must try. Had roasted cauliflower and it was delicious. Don't forget the pizzas, inventive and very good. We made the trip (about 20 miles from home), on a Wednesday afternoon and it was packed at 2:30 in the afternoon.

The beer was tasty, the music and atmosphere were also awesome but the bartenders were unfriendly and boarding on rude. Maybe they were just having an off night, or maybe they don't like non-locals? Whatever the circumstance, that kind of service is not what I expect from a small town local place. Thankfully we came with excellent company.

Very nice and friendly microbrewery.
Excellent selection of nearly 18 beers on tap. I found it difficult to narrow them down for a beer sampler. The beers were very good. A few weren't my type but were still drinkable. The food we had was also very good and creative. I had the chicken pesto wrap. It was delicious and bursting with flavor. The place was pretty well filled for a Friday night as well. We still had great service and found ourselves a table quickly. There was some live music there as well which only added to the atmosphere. We will return! -

I love Short's Brewing Company.
I love the beer (I am partial to the Bellaire Brown, but any of their chocolate porters or stouts are are fantastic). We started coming here at least a couple of times while on vacation (we are up here in July).
I am glad to see they are doing well and I have even seen their beer on the shelf at Glen's here in Bellaire.
Their food menu has evolved and improved over the years. I just finished the 'Someday' (a nicely done club on a ciabatta roll).
As good as always, almost forgot their Wifi is fast and free. -

Awesome brews and venue! In the quaint village that is Bellaire, this place is a little hike from the rest of the Grand Traverse area. This would be a great destination to pair with a visit to view the beautiful Torch Lake. The service was wonderful. I had a sample with a variety of brews, and there was only one that I didn't care for. I can't remember the name of the brew, but the description said it was to have "hints of orange, marshmallow and... something else... in it" - to say the least, it was terrible! Stick with their more basic brews and you will be happy. I love going to Shorts when I am visiting northwest Michigan!

Short's is my favorite brewery ever. Ever ever ever.
The beer is nothing short of fabulous. Many styles from which to choose. Some are downright strange, but in the most wonderful of ways.
The brewery itself is cozy, nicely divided into two rooms, the bigger room with performance space, tables, and chairs, and the smaller room with the bar and a few smaller tables and comfy chairs.
Short's is interesting people watching. Lots of families that I imagine are from Oakland county, up visiting their lake house and wanting a beer. Lots of younger hippie types. Lots of older perhaps ex-hippie types. Good gathering spot for lots of folks. Good beer, frequently good music. Always good atmosphere.
Big basket of peanuts and a big glass of Cuppa Joe Stout on the table in front of me, sitting in a comfy chair made from the seat of some long gone automobile and I'm a happy lady. -

My new husband and I made a special trip to Short's as part of our honeymoon. This was a great move on my part as a new wife - he LOVED it!!! The best thing for a beer enthusiast is the nearly 20 beers they had on tap. We had never visited a microbrewery with more selection and it was tons of fun making our way through the samplers.
The food was great and the place was hopping at 3:00 on a post-Labor Day Saturday afternoon. Overall, it was an incredibly fun visit.
My husband was most impressed by the experimental variety of beers from the Key Lime Pie (which he loved and brought home for sharing) to the Strawberry Shortscake. They had quantity AND quality, which is somewhat rare for a place with so much variety.
It is well worth the trip! I have been to many microbreweries with my husband and have never seen him have so much fun with so many beers to sample. The only downside of Shorts is the distance from our Chicago home. -

I knew my boyfriend liked Huma before we went on our vacation to bellaire, so I brought home a 6-pack from a local store to celebrate that our vacation was only a few days away. I had a huma for the first time with him at home and OMGGGGGGGGGGGG i couldnt wait to visit Shorts for REAL! We stayed at Shanty Creek for 6 night and went to Shorts almost every night/evening. It is such a cool place, all sorts of different folks passing through. Sometimes it was packed and sometimes we were the only ones in there! They have the most delicous craft beer ever. You can order in "tasting flights" or by the glass. My fav of all time will always be HUMA LUPA LICOUS. Some I tried while there that i loved also was "another caucasian gary" (the dude!!!), Key Lime Pie, Anniversary Ale, Chocolate Wheat, Strawberry Shortcake.( I always get jealous when i see new releases on their website b/c I am not there to try them.) The bartender was sooo nice too. One of the days we were even offered a tour by a staff memeber that noticed we had been there a few times and brought us down to the brewing rooms and told us about the process of making shorts beer - HOW COOL! especially for beer snobs like us! We only ate there one day (before a 51 mile bike ride so we needed carbs) and we had a pizza and it was, i kid you not in my top 5 pizzas ive ever eaten in my life. NOMNOM! I cant even describe it, it was just a delicious pizza. Shorts is great - if you are going anywhere within 50 miles of bellaire, make sure you sidetrack a trip to shorts and you will not be disappointed!!

I love microbrews. And I love to sample them. Which is why I love Joe Short's brewery. His menu features the largest number of original brews that I've seen in a brewery. My friend and I each got samplers of five different beers each and still could have gotten two more to try to taste the entire menu.
Joe is a clever entreprenuer and I admire what he's done at such a young age. He's starting to build a reputation and I enjoy watching the growth from afar. It's so nice to see a worthy establishment garner the attention and praise it deserves.
Short's always seems to have inventive events, diverse live music, and a general sense of community. Living in Traverse City means that I don't get there often, but I always feel welcomed when I do. Friendly staff adds to the enjoyable experience. Not to mention the comfy, cozy interior.
Some faves: the recently bottled Huma Lupa Licious, Soft Parade, new Cup A Joe Coffee Creme Stout, and this past summer's Raspberry. But I recommend that you try a sampler or two for your first visit. And grab some grub. Tasty, tasty grub. (Pizzas a good, spin-art dip yummy and gooey, and chips and spicy salsa has a nice kick. All special events with dinner have been delicious.)
I heart Short's. -

Amazing place. Joe remodeled himself from an old hardware store. It's a pretty impressive building. It was pretty crowded but we were lucky enough to get a seat at the bar.
There are 16 taps of great beer, I'd move to Bellaire just to be closer to this place. Some of the highlights are Cup-A-Joe, Bellaire Brown, Uber Goober, Black Cherry Porter and my favorite The Stellar Ale. Everything served in a 16 or 20 ounce pour.
The staff is amazing, they some of the friendliest people. Leah was awesome and Jon gave us an outstanding tour earlier in the day.
The pizza was good and very filling. The Salsa is fresh and spicy. -

Short's brew their own beer. It's owned and run by a guy named Joe Short. He and some friends from school just love making beer and do a great job of it. It opened about three years ago despite opposition from a nearby church and has continued to do well.
They have a number of specialties... but I like Bellaire Brown. Try a sampler. There is a cherry flavored brew that is pretty tasty too.
The food there is good but seems lately they are mostly doing pizza. But that is good too and big. So go for it and hang around this small town pub for a bit. They have original live music from time to time also. -

Woohoo I loved Shorts! Key Lime Pie beer?!?!?! Yum! Pistachio Cream beer?!?!?! Yum! This place had some totally weird flavors, some worked better than others but we have to give them credit for the creativity. We loved Shorts so much that we picked up some bottles and some growlers to bring home with us. The food was awesome as well. I got a bowl of wild mushroom soup and the BF got the mac and cheese. Both were really different from what we expected but in a really interesting and delicious way. If you are in the area, GO TO SHORTS!
