Not sure what the issues are with this course.  It's fun, has some interesting holes, and is generally in good shape.

Same price as the surrounding muni courses (Palo Alto, San Jose) but more fun and challenging in my opinion.

Used to be a decent course, but management seems to be getting worse

SLOW PLAY, and marshals don't care.  I played a whole round on a holiday waiting on every shot, and never saw a single marshal on the course.

DEGRADING COURSE CONDITIONS - there is no sand in the sand traps, the greens are bad, even for a public course.  And the bird poop...

I used to really enjoy this layout but can't put up with the slow play and course conditions, especially when they don't seem to be interested in improving things.

    NO THANKS!!!

Just an OK golf course.  Nothing special but it is fun to play with water and big traps.  Can be very challenging when the wind kicks up.  Fun because both par 5s on front 9 are reachable.  Cut the corner on 9.  Nice area and good people.  3 stars but look for deals on green fees.  Nice range though.

In two words, bird poop. I know this place is being managed by a new company now but the course is in bits, actually disgusting. Had to wash, clubs, shoes and even balls after that round. will not be going back unless there are some drastic changes. Better cleaner places close by for the same money.

When you play from the blues, 6600 yards, and the wind is blowing, you are in for a tough round.  On a Sunday it was $54 for walking. There are no signature holes but it's a pleasant and walkable golf course.

My bitch with this place is they do no work on the sand traps.  If you are going to have a links golf course with lots of sand, make the traps good.  They seem to have an anti-maintenance program as they are dirt traps.  Step yo' game up Shoreline!

It's a fine muni.  Nor worth a special drive to but if your are on the peninsula I would check it out.

There must be something wrong going on here. There I stood on the 18th tee box with only 73 strokes already accounted for. What? how is this possible? You mean if I birdie, par, bogey, or even double bogey I can Break 80 for first time ever??!! What!! So of course pushed my drive OB right, only OB by about 6 inches....son of a #$@&!!  Now I am on the green lying 4 just need a 2 putt and get out of here with a 79....of course my first 3 putt of the day AARRRGGHHH!!!!!

Anyway, what is even more incredible was the fact that there was not one piece of goose s@#t on the greens! I know, can you believe it? I once swore I would never play here again because it was so bad, but last weekend it was in great shape and the beverage cart was circling, the wind was non-existent, it was a little slice of heaven.. A little slice of (son of $%^# %$#@  damn 80), heaven.

Between the smell, the wind, the bird poop, and the almost unplayable greens, Shoreline is almost not worth the trouble to go to.  And they want to charge how much?!  Ridiculous.  The only thing that saved this from being a 1-star review is the fact that they have a decent driving range, putting green, and chipping area.  The staff is also pretty nice.  Yup, everything you need to improve your golf game... except a decent course to play.

This place is a joke. Always empty and tee times available because it costs so much to play on a course that has worse grass and greens the the elks club in redwood city in the early 90s. $70 per player is about twice what I would pay to play at this dump and the staff is so pretentious they practically ran me out when I commented on their green fees. Stay away it's a rip off. Even on golfnow the discounted tee times are $67. Get real folks this place sucks!

5 star layout (it's was designed by Robert Trent Jones).  Except for hole 18 that got remodeled.
3 star condition.  It is a muni for God's sake.  Some greens are decent, some are bumpy.  Don't hit into any of the sand traps.  They are as hard as the cart path.

Great course for a mixed foursome of high and low handicappers.  The forward tees are easy while the tips can get ugly.  (The 10th and 12th being great examples.)  Play early in the morning or be prepared to play in monsoon-like winds. The early-bird Back 9 special is a great way to start your day.  Oh, there is goose poop everywhere.

Fantastic food and beer in a very nice, modern club house setting.  The pro shop is completely new and has a great selection for those people crazy enough to make major purchases at a golf course.  Green fees are quite reasonable.  Watch out for goose poop.

They have great practice facilities including a grass/mat lit driving range, multiple putting greens, a pitching green and even a practice bunker.  A great place to spend the day practicing with a rented sleeve of balls from the range attendant.  BEWARE the course pro wearing the straw hat.  He's a complete jerk.  It probably has to do with all the goose poop on the course.

Did I mention that there is a lot of goose poop?  There is...a lot.

I haven't played golf in a while, but this place was close to work and I was strongarmed by some coworkers into playing.

The course itself has lots of geese and hence geese poop. Besides that, it's maintained OK, nothing spectacular but you can do worse. The variety of holes was pretty good as well, lots of long holes, doglegs, and water.

We played at twilight, 4:30pm, on a Tuesday. Wasn't busy, which is good. I hate playing in front of pushy, snobby golfers who always ask to play through, and there weren't any here. Not sure how it is on weekends or during the day.

The driving range? Meh. They didn't have plastic tees at all for the mats! This is the first driving range I've been to where you had to supply your own plastic tee. Ghetto.

I did shoot my first par ever here, so I guess I'll always have a fond memory of this place.

I enjoyed Shoreline quite a bit.  Outside of the goose turds everywhere, it's in good shape.  There is a lot of water on the course, adding to the challenge - but most challenging feature there is the wind from the bay.  Man, it can straight up blow out there.  In fact, I'm certain that the course rating and slope is high because they take that into account... so play there when it's calm, and you'll kick its ass.

I'll call Shoreline arguably the best of the economical "muni" courses in the area.

Seems like a lot of variability to reviews for good ol' Shoreline Links.

    Here's my take:

    - A good, but challenging Muni course.  Challenge depends a fair amount on the wind that day, which is usually strong, but not always.  When the gusts hit you, the par 4's play more like par 5's

    - Fair amount of water.  Theoretically, I believe it is in play on 8-9 holes, though for some only barely.

    - Wide open, but accuracy rewarded.  The fairways look very open, and they are, but this course will reward the smarter player that looks for the best 2nd shot, and not just where you can land safely from the tee.

    - Lots of geese, yes, and their droppings.  No doubt about it, but it didn't interfere with my play much (aside from almost beheading one, on a wormburner I hit...the closest I got to a birdie that day)

    - Back 9 is a leg stretcher.  If you walk the course, like I did, the back 9 is a lot longer, where there are considerable distances between holes and the next tee box.  It's not bad, but on a searing day it's quite a workout.

Overall, a good solid muni course.  Some say it's a little spendy, but it seems in line to me compared to similar courses.

The course isn't the best maintained course, even by muni course standards. They've cut back a lot of the random shrubbery which is nice, but the grass wasn't in the best shape when I went previously.

The winds can be pretty vicious. Prices are pretty high for what you get. There are other muni courses you're better off going to.

A nice bonus is that you get to listen to music when there's a concert at the Shoreline Amphitheater.

I am by no means a golfer. I don't own a set up clubs, I don't sport the geeky shoes, or even have a fancy pantsy visor with a golf companies name scribbled across the front. Still, seeing as my Mom has found a new love for the sport, it's nice to meet up with her and whale some balls at the driving range. Wendy and I cruised by to meet her at about 1 p.m. on Sunday. There were plenty of spaces open on the range, and we were able to find 3 spots next to each other. The balls are decently priced, the range is properly marked and giving my mom a high five when she rockets one off is priceless. I'm gonna keep going back here because it's all I know, and the range is closest to her work.... even though my back feels like it's twisted like a pretzel the next day.

Oh, almost forgot they have a chinese chicken salad in the clubhouse that's pretty awesome, and the pastrami sandwich isn't half bad either.

One of the very few places in the bay area where you can hit off grass at the range.  That alone makes me give it five stars.

Not sure what their "grass" schedule is, but I went on a saturday afternoon, and was hitting
    off grass.

Can't speak for the course though, as I haven't played it.

Solid golf course at a decent price.

True, I haven't played a full 18 holes of golf in years, so the course was a bit painful. For the price ($66 per person with a cart), the course was pretty with a fair number of scenic (and treacherous) water hazards.

There is some construction occurring on the back 9 which is a bit annoying (but there are rules on how you deal with the construction hazards...which I had to apply). You'll find a lot of geese (and their droppings); geese seem to love golf courses...

As the marshal told us, the recommended time to complete the course is 4 hours and 20 minutes, and they definitely come by often to check to make sure you're keeping time.

This was my first time coming here and I was blown away by how pretty it was for an average golf course. It was good enough for me, especially since I haven't played in the past 5 years...I didn't do as bad as I thought I would but I guess I should have gone to the driving range first to warm up :).  The first 9 holes was nice but the back 9 holes seems pretty run down. Beware of all the geese crap all over the course but no worries, they have an area by the golf cart returns where you can use an air hose to blow away all the crap off your golf shoes afterwards.

The fees are $54 but twilight fees are $28. I'm not sure how much the golf carts cost but since my friend is a Mountain View resident, we got a discount on the fees and golf cart. And it wasn't that bad. I'd definitely be back now that I've got the golf bug in my system! :)

Closest golf course and driving range to where I live, so it's a regular on my list.
The driving range is great because it has tons of mats so theres never a wait. Pretty big compared to most driving ranges I think and that seems to help my shot. Only problem is the wind here. And the smell.
The actual golf course isn't the best maintained one I've seen, but it passes. I like how large the course feels and that they have golf carts =D

If I was taking someone to impress to golf, this wouldn't be in my top choice... Props for location and restaurant and shop and size of the place, but downsides definately are wind, smell, and care of the grass.

I took two sessions of golf lessons here with Roy Day & Joe DeBode this past spring. Roy & Joe are both excellent instructors.

I had never golfed before in my life and that included minimal miniature golfing as well. I am proud to say that I am a pretty good beginning golfer.

Shoreline golf has three nice practice areas for putting & chipping and a nice driving range.

18 hole course, cart rentals, pro shop, and course restaurant.

Shoreline golfers are not very friendly or patient with beginning golfers. Come on people, how quickly you forget when you were a beginner. Actually the two times that I played there outside of lessons I experienced some very rude unfriendly impatient golfers. Aside from that watch out for all the geese poop. It's all over the place.

    Pros:
    * Decently nice looking

    * There aren't many ducks

    * 18 holes costs $54 (at around 1:30 p.m.) without a golf cart for non-residents; $47 for residents.

    * The fee is a day fee, which means you can play over and over again (I've never been up for it after 18 holes)

*The have a good sized driving range

    Cons:
    * There are a TON of geese (I've hit a few on accident, and even broke one's leg)

    * No food / beer carts; you have to stock up before the 1st and after the 9th

    * A couple of the holes are right next to the exit road; try not to slice!

    * Can be pretty windy

I played golf here a lot when I lived in mountain view, and I liked it. I guess the fee is reasonable, not busy at all, the course is mediocre but not bad, a couple of par-5s and 3s. But the duck shit is all over...on fairways and greens. you've got to live with it. and a lot of ducks, too. one day I hit a driver, and the ball went straight, just 10 inches above the ground, and hit a duck. surprisingly, the duck was fine. it walked away.

Ain't that a shame.  I remember playing Shoreline way back in the day when I was 14, and I used to think how great of a course it was compared to Moffett.  So I don't know if I was just a retarded kid or if I am now a spoiled asshole, but Shoreline really has left me wondering what happened.  The location off of the bay adds some nice variables, such as the wind on 10, but the cons such as the stench and geese poop (aka. the most worthless animal on the planet) make it hard to enjoy.  I always remembered Shoreline being quite poo-affluent, but I was overwhelmed with how much fecal matter littered the course.  It was like walking through a minefield to avoid all the dung... probably looked like I was doing the soulja boy walking from shot to shot.  It got to the point where I took illegal drops just so I wouldn't get my iron grooves full of shit. DAGH. Such a disappointment.

Dootie aside, the layout is relatively interesting and the greens seemed pretty receptive and in decent condition... absolutely NOTHING like the practice green area, which has some of the most impossible breaks and pin placements that I have ever seen.  I never have gotten pissed off while practicing putting, but I was *this* close to launching the putter into the lake (which unfortunately only really comes into play on one hole, waste).  I was also surprised with how much GUR there was.... I swear the entire section between the 10th green and hole 13 has been under-repair for like 10 years now.  The entire tee box for hole 16 (I think...) was under repair, and was so severe that it was turned into a par 4 from a 5.  For the pretty high weekend price and no word of it from the pro shop before we teed off, it irritated me to say the least.  Pace was bay area standard, at least 5 hours, with few appearances from marshals -- probably a bad thing during more peak hours.

The range is mediocre, at best.  As people have said, they do allow hitting off of the grass from time to time, though I haven't figured out their mat-to-green rotation just yet.  The range balls are pretty shitty, and towards the evening the sun sets right down the range line... pointless to hit at this point.  Prices start at 6 bucks for a small bucket.

If someone ever asks me to play at Shoreline, I will definitely play, but I don't expect to go back anytime soon by my own choice.

I've only been to the driving range.  The course is in a nice and convenient location, just off of the 101.  The course is beautiful with a lot of water features.  However, the water attracts fowl of all types, whose collective poop can create an unpleasant stench.  It's one of those smells that you have to think about a little before realizing what is causing it.

The driving range itself is OK.  The stalls are in good condition and the balls are relatively cheap.  A medium bucket (55 balls) costs $6 and a large bucket (90 balls) costs $9.  The hitting area is pretty run down.  There is hardly any grass out there and there aren't any distance markers.  Plus, there always seems to be a strong wind blowing at you.  (Maybe that explains my slice -- or not...)

Shoreline is a pretty fun course.  It has a good variety, not too much slope and plays fast.  The downside is that with all the wildlife, you don't have the best kept course.  This course is much better than Palo Alto Muni, so I go here instead.  Driving range is also good (can hit off of the grass) and cheaper than PA ($9/$10 for a large) instead of $12.

Long and flat, wide open fairways, and hurricane winds ... that's Shoreline.  I hear the winds are not bad in the morning, but wow, being down on the south bay, this pretty nice muni does catch quite a breeze.  It's reasonably priced, well maintained (except the holes around the lake that are covered in ducks, and duck droppings) and they have those nice sun mountain push carts to rent.  There is a nice big driving range and a big restaurant there too.  It go often if I lived down there.

This has got to be one of the most boring courses that I have ever played - it is EXTREMELY flat, and it is surrounded by very industrial office buildings.  It is nice that they have a large range, good chipping/putting area, and a large clubhouse.  But, the course is kind of random.  It is maintained well for a muni course and there are some fun holes with lakes involved.  I had fun b/c I was playing well - but I didn't love the course.

I enjoyed my first golf outing in a very long time. The clubs I rented were decent, and the staff waited for us as we finished up our round of 9 holes as the sun was setting. The course has some water hazards and sand traps. It is flat since it is at the edge of the bay. Outside of the immediate fairways the grounds were not good, but I shouldn't have been off in the weeds anyway.

I've played 2 full rounds of golf here and I'm a beginner golfer with a 22 handicap. I think if you decide to play in the afternoon to evening, you should definitely be ready for some wind. We caught the twilight at 4:30pm and we were able to finish a full 18 before 9pm. Not bad for $25.

They have a great driving range and on weekends you can hit off the grass which is always great. They also have a huge chipping area in the back that you can practice at for free.

As stated earlier, there's a lot of geese poop but overal its a beautiful course with lots of different types of holes. Some are par 3's with water in front, some are straight par 5's or dog leg par 4's. A great variety of holes and the place is well kept. I'm definitely coming back here in for more golf.

Competitive twilight and super twilight rates, especially if you are a Mountain View resident.  More expensive on the weekends.  The front nine and back nine were created by different designers, so you don't have repetition,  making it more interesting.  The course is forgiving, so you will more often have a shot when you miss the fairway.  Wind is a big factor in the afternoon.  A few hills, a lot of dog legs and the water is not too intimidating.  The big negative is the geese s#*t, it is all over the place and your girlfriend will complain that you smell like  a sewer tank when you get home.  The greens can get bumpy at times.  Other than that, it is usually a lot of fun to play the course.  The bartender at the club is entertaining and gets a big crowd of 19th hole golfers finishing the round up at the bar.  If your current focus is to practice, you can't find a better facility.  They have separate greens for chipping, pitching, putting and a deep green side bunker.  All three munis north and south combined don't have near the practice size facility that Shoreline has.

A great Muni course.  Plays fast and fun.  Some great holes with some water hazards.  The price is reasonable and even better for Mountain View residences.  They also offer unlimited golf for a fair price for residents as well.  Some duck crap can be a problem on holes by the lake.  More challenging then Palo Alto Muni.

I like the course. Very challenging from the black tees, but exponentially easier, on the whites. Plenty of opportunitys for the longer drivers. You can practice all day for free. Thats pretty cool.

a fairly good variety in terms of length, turns, lakes, bunkers, etc.  generally well maintained.  $66 for one round and half a cart.  a little more expensive than i would have liked.  nice views.  very windy.  i take off a full star just for the wind.  i was told that it is often like that at this course.  it is bad enough that i would avoid going just for that reason.

I played here today and had an absolutely great time. We were 3 of us playing at Shoreline for the first time (we normally play at SJ Muni or Spring Valley) and we all unanimously agreed that this course is much finer than the other muni courses.
A definite thumbs up from me.

I play at shoreline once in a while. Very nice course if the weather is nice. Water makes the course challenging. I scored a 96 which is not that great, but i had one big problem with the course. There is bird shit everywhere.
When i got back to my friends house, i had shit stuck in my shoes. Shoreline is a wide, long course with hazards and water, which makes it even more challenging, but they really need to fix the bird shit issue.
