I enjoyed Shoreline quite a bit. Outside of the goose turds everywhere, it's in good shape. There is a lot of water on the course, adding to the challenge - but most challenging feature there is the wind from the bay. Man, it can straight up blow out there. In fact, I'm certain that the course rating and slope is high because they take that into account... so play there when it's calm, and you'll kick its ass.
I'll call Shoreline arguably the best of the economical "muni" courses in the area.

I am by no means a golfer. I don't own a set up clubs, I don't sport the geeky shoes, or even have a fancy pantsy visor with a golf companies name scribbled across the front. Still, seeing as my Mom has found a new love for the sport, it's nice to meet up with her and whale some balls at the driving range. Wendy and I cruised by to meet her at about 1 p.m. on Sunday. There were plenty of spaces open on the range, and we were able to find 3 spots next to each other. The balls are decently priced, the range is properly marked and giving my mom a high five when she rockets one off is priceless. I'm gonna keep going back here because it's all I know, and the range is closest to her work.... even though my back feels like it's twisted like a pretzel the next day.
Oh, almost forgot they have a chinese chicken salad in the clubhouse that's pretty awesome, and the pastrami sandwich isn't half bad either.

Pros:
* Decently nice looking
* There aren't many ducks
* 18 holes costs $54 (at around 1:30 p.m.) without a golf cart for non-residents; $47 for residents.
* The fee is a day fee, which means you can play over and over again (I've never been up for it after 18 holes)
*The have a good sized driving range
Cons:
* There are a TON of geese (I've hit a few on accident, and even broke one's leg)
* No food / beer carts; you have to stock up before the 1st and after the 9th
* A couple of the holes are right next to the exit road; try not to slice!
* Can be pretty windy
I have been a member of the Shoreline Seniors for years always paying my dues on time and spending my money at the course.
I inquired about a small donation for my daughters school, and was blew off like I had the plague.. In short I was told the school is not in Mountain View,so take a hike.. Now that is a great for our children and grandchilden. Government has creeped into the lowest level and forsaked our schools..
Please do not used this course or the city as it is run by narrow minded people, who could care less about out educational system...

imo, this course has a MAJOR goose poop problem. i've played on courses with lots of geese before, but the poop here is just totally out of control. i won't be coming back.
Seems like a lot of variability to reviews for good ol' Shoreline Links.
Here's my take:
- A good, but challenging Muni course. Challenge depends a fair amount on the wind that day, which is usually strong, but not always. When the gusts hit you, the par 4's play more like par 5's
- Fair amount of water. Theoretically, I believe it is in play on 8-9 holes, though for some only barely.
- Wide open, but accuracy rewarded. The fairways look very open, and they are, but this course will reward the smarter player that looks for the best 2nd shot, and not just where you can land safely from the tee.
- Lots of geese, yes, and their droppings. No doubt about it, but it didn't interfere with my play much (aside from almost beheading one, on a wormburner I hit...the closest I got to a birdie that day)
- Back 9 is a leg stretcher. If you walk the course, like I did, the back 9 is a lot longer, where there are considerable distances between holes and the next tee box. It's not bad, but on a searing day it's quite a workout.
Overall, a good solid muni course. Some say it's a little spendy, but it seems in line to me compared to similar courses.

Pretty average course here, nothing to go crazy about but it's still a challenge when the wind is up. Lately I've been on a tear and shot my first ever sub-80's round, so naturally I've got some pretty good feelings about this course, but I've got to try being objective here.
The wind is definitely the deciding factor here. When it's down like in the morning, this place is a walk in the park (pun intended). However, when the wind is up, which is mainly the case, this course can be tough to say the least. Try hitting a 6 iron into a 130 yrd par 3 only to be 10 yards short. Talk about ownage. It's not like you wouldn't expect that from here though. If you go to a course where people usually wind surf and still curse the wind here...you should be punched in the face.
The greens here leave something to be desired, but all in all it's not that shabby of a course. I like that you can take a stroll in the park after your round if you have the energy.

Solid golf course at a decent price.
True, I haven't played a full 18 holes of golf in years, so the course was a bit painful. For the price ($66 per person with a cart), the course was pretty with a fair number of scenic (and treacherous) water hazards.
There is some construction occurring on the back 9 which is a bit annoying (but there are rules on how you deal with the construction hazards...which I had to apply). You'll find a lot of geese (and their droppings); geese seem to love golf courses...
As the marshal told us, the recommended time to complete the course is 4 hours and 20 minutes, and they definitely come by often to check to make sure you're keeping time.
This was my first time coming here and I was blown away by how pretty it was for an average golf course. It was good enough for me, especially since I haven't played in the past 5 years...I didn't do as bad as I thought I would but I guess I should have gone to the driving range first to warm up :). The first 9 holes was nice but the back 9 holes seems pretty run down. Beware of all the geese crap all over the course but no worries, they have an area by the golf cart returns where you can use an air hose to blow away all the crap off your golf shoes afterwards.
The fees are $54 but twilight fees are $28. I'm not sure how much the golf carts cost but since my friend is a Mountain View resident, we got a discount on the fees and golf cart. And it wasn't that bad. I'd definitely be back now that I've got the golf bug in my system! :)
The course isn't the best maintained course, even by muni course standards. They've cut back a lot of the random shrubbery which is nice, but the grass wasn't in the best shape when I went previously.
The winds can be pretty vicious. Prices are pretty high for what you get. There are other muni courses you're better off going to.
A nice bonus is that you get to listen to music when there's a concert at the Shoreline Amphitheater.

Great course for a mixed foursome of high and low handicappers. The forward tees are easy while the tips can get ugly. (The 10th and 12th being great examples.) Play early in the morning or be prepared to play in monsoon-like winds. The early-bird Back 9 special is a great way to start your day. Oh, there is goose poop everywhere.
Fantastic food and beer in a very nice, modern club house setting. The pro shop is completely new and has a great selection for those people crazy enough to make major purchases at a golf course. Green fees are quite reasonable. Watch out for goose poop.
They have great practice facilities including a grass/mat lit driving range, multiple putting greens, a pitching green and even a practice bunker. A great place to spend the day practicing with a rented sleeve of balls from the range attendant. BEWARE the course pro wearing the straw hat. He's a complete jerk. It probably has to do with all the goose poop on the course.
Did I mention that there is a lot of goose poop? There is...a lot.

Closest golf course and driving range to where I live, so it's a regular on my list.
The driving range is great because it has tons of mats so theres never a wait. Pretty big compared to most driving ranges I think and that seems to help my shot. Only problem is the wind here. And the smell.
The actual golf course isn't the best maintained one I've seen, but it passes. I like how large the course feels and that they have golf carts =D
If I was taking someone to impress to golf, this wouldn't be in my top choice... Props for location and restaurant and shop and size of the place, but downsides definately are wind, smell, and care of the grass.
BLINDNESS!!!!
Avoid the range/course at sunset -- you'll be hitting straight into the sun, not to mention fighting whipping winds.
Shoreline has one of the more challenging short game practice areas.
Once you've shoveled the geese droppings from your soft spikes, kick up your heels at Michaels for refreshments and bar food.

This place went all foo foo on me.
I'm a mountain View resident and the prices to play here have SKYROCKETED. It's not even a very well kept course.
nNot happy that this course has fallen to the cost-prohibative and snobby category. SHAME!

One of the very few places in the bay area where you can hit off grass at the range. That alone makes me give it five stars.
Not sure what their "grass" schedule is, but I went on a saturday afternoon, and was hitting
off grass.
Can't speak for the course though, as I haven't played it.

I played golf here a lot when I lived in mountain view, and I liked it. I guess the fee is reasonable, not busy at all, the course is mediocre but not bad, a couple of par-5s and 3s. But the duck shit is all over...on fairways and greens. you've got to live with it. and a lot of ducks, too. one day I hit a driver, and the ball went straight, just 10 inches above the ground, and hit a duck. surprisingly, the duck was fine. it walked away.

Ain't that a shame. I remember playing Shoreline way back in the day when I was 14, and I used to think how great of a course it was compared to Moffett. So I don't know if I was just a retarded kid or if I am now a spoiled asshole, but Shoreline really has left me wondering what happened. The location off of the bay adds some nice variables, such as the wind on 10, but the cons such as the stench and geese poop (aka. the most worthless animal on the planet) make it hard to enjoy. I always remembered Shoreline being quite poo-affluent, but I was overwhelmed with how much fecal matter littered the course. It was like walking through a minefield to avoid all the dung... probably looked like I was doing the soulja boy walking from shot to shot. It got to the point where I took illegal drops just so I wouldn't get my iron grooves full of shit. DAGH. Such a disappointment.
Dootie aside, the layout is relatively interesting and the greens seemed pretty receptive and in decent condition... absolutely NOTHING like the practice green area, which has some of the most impossible breaks and pin placements that I have ever seen. I never have gotten pissed off while practicing putting, but I was *this* close to launching the putter into the lake (which unfortunately only really comes into play on one hole, waste). I was also surprised with how much GUR there was.... I swear the entire section between the 10th green and hole 13 has been under-repair for like 10 years now. The entire tee box for hole 16 (I think...) was under repair, and was so severe that it was turned into a par 4 from a 5. For the pretty high weekend price and no word of it from the pro shop before we teed off, it irritated me to say the least. Pace was bay area standard, at least 5 hours, with few appearances from marshals -- probably a bad thing during more peak hours.
The range is mediocre, at best. As people have said, they do allow hitting off of the grass from time to time, though I haven't figured out their mat-to-green rotation just yet. The range balls are pretty shitty, and towards the evening the sun sets right down the range line... pointless to hit at this point. Prices start at 6 bucks for a small bucket.
If someone ever asks me to play at Shoreline, I will definitely play, but I don't expect to go back anytime soon by my own choice.

I've only been to the driving range. The course is in a nice and convenient location, just off of the 101. The course is beautiful with a lot of water features. However, the water attracts fowl of all types, whose collective poop can create an unpleasant stench. It's one of those smells that you have to think about a little before realizing what is causing it.
The driving range itself is OK. The stalls are in good condition and the balls are relatively cheap. A medium bucket (55 balls) costs $6 and a large bucket (90 balls) costs $9. The hitting area is pretty run down. There is hardly any grass out there and there aren't any distance markers. Plus, there always seems to be a strong wind blowing at you. (Maybe that explains my slice -- or not...)

This is a real fun links course. It sits right on the water behind the amphitheater, which is real popular for wind surfers for good reason: it's WINDY! It would be best to learn how to hit knock-down shots if you're playing in the afternoon. There are a lot of holes which invite big drives, but placement is key on many, especially the holes where water is present, like the 10th, where the lake is in front of the green and usually accompanied by a 2-3 club wind. This is a very fun course, just wash your hands well. Like everyone else has said: goose poop.

Please hire a full time maintenance worker that's in charge of blowing off geese crap on the golf course. I'm tired of stepping in poop 75% of my round. Beside animal poo, the fairways are blotchy and greens are not smooth, quite bumpy, and slow. They have a full range however its tough going there in the afternoon because your hitting directly into the sunlight. They have a decent practice chipping and green area. Its tough to get a decent morning tee time if your not a mountain view resident and requires a CC to hold your tee times. This course is not in my monthly rotation.

Long and flat, wide open fairways, and hurricane winds ... that's Shoreline. I hear the winds are not bad in the morning, but wow, being down on the south bay, this pretty nice muni does catch quite a breeze. It's reasonably priced, well maintained (except the holes around the lake that are covered in ducks, and duck droppings) and they have those nice sun mountain push carts to rent. There is a nice big driving range and a big restaurant there too. It go often if I lived down there.

This has got to be one of the most boring courses that I have ever played - it is EXTREMELY flat, and it is surrounded by very industrial office buildings. It is nice that they have a large range, good chipping/putting area, and a large clubhouse. But, the course is kind of random. It is maintained well for a muni course and there are some fun holes with lakes involved. I had fun b/c I was playing well - but I didn't love the course.

A great Muni course. Plays fast and fun. Some great holes with some water hazards. The price is reasonable and even better for Mountain View residences. They also offer unlimited golf for a fair price for residents as well. Some duck crap can be a problem on holes by the lake. More challenging then Palo Alto Muni.
I like the course. Very challenging from the black tees, but exponentially easier, on the whites. Plenty of opportunitys for the longer drivers. You can practice all day for free. Thats pretty cool.
If you like stepping in goose shit this is really the course for you.
