When I was growing up in Monty G, Shoprite was actually a cool place to hang out. You would constantly run in to peers, whether it be stocking the shelves, smoking out back, or being dragged along on a grocery trip with their parents.
Until I grew up and moved away, I never thought there was anything special about Shoprite. Well let me tell you, it IS world class. So many markets I've visited since those days are grimy & offer poor selection. Montgomery's Shope Rite is clean. The produce is always fresh and they have the most random extras you wouldn't expect to find in a grocery store. The employees are competent and helpful. Their is a Bank of America (I think) located inside so you can multi task while shopping.
Make sure you bring/sign up for your savings card!!!
First, the good. This supermarket is great for produce. They have a fantastic selection, and everything seems quite fresh. There are quite a few local supermarkets locally, where the produce is so lacking, that you have to go to two or three before getting what you want, especially if what you want is somewhat out of the ordinary. I would say also, the bakery is very good, although on weekends, things sell out quickly. Good cheese selection too.
Now the bad... this place is far too crowded, at almost all times. The cashiers are awfully slow, and they seem to slow down as the lines grow. Hours are also "interesting". I was in there once when they announced they would suddenly be closing in about 20 minutes (despite the posted hours!), and then started throwing people out about 5 minutes later. This was extremely off-putting. Basically you are going to waste time trying to get through the crowded aisles and waiting in lines.
I guess what it comes down to is that the products they sell are good, but the experience of shopping there is not.
Given that this store is close and I have suffered through the local Stop and Shop, I started frequenting this place.
This is a serious improvement over the other chain stores in the area. For one thing the produce is decent. There is a large selection and there is actually a helpful staff that is willing to go in the back and grab you something fresh when they are avaialble, they often are not available though, not unlike most chains.
They have a good bakery and a fair selection of artisan items if you aren't there at the wrong time. I suggest Thursday, Friday or Saturday, that seems like the best selection overall.
Another plus is that they seem to consistently carry items and don't change up your favorite item often so you can count on it. I even once in a while can stomach the sushi in the counter, it's not near as bad as you would think :)
