Wow! What a wonderful end to a not-so-great ski day in Tahoe. When we got there Bill and Aimee were hanging up a decoration outside, but he came to our car to greet us and to make us feel welcome. It's so luxurious to have a gas fireplace and heated tiles in the room, and the whirlpool tub is, quite literally, like having a hot tub in the bathroom.
The next morning Aimee made us crepes for breakfast (delicious!) and we had a wonderful breakfast chat with the other two guests and Aimee. It was definitely cozy to have such an intimate, home-cooked breakfast.
The shared living spaces are well furnished. The sofa overlooking the lake was especially delightful. It's warmed by the sun in the morning and was an indulgent place to crochet from.
Aimee was a super gracious host, recommending dining options and helping us with some technical difficulties as we were leaving. I wish we could have stayed longer! -

Had a lovely time here on a quick Tahoe vacation. The innkeeper (Bill) is easy to talk to and keeps up his establishment well (even in the smallest room the bathroom is particularly nice); food is delicious!
The only thing I would warn about is that the husband and I found the bed to be exceedingly warm. We were sweating with no covers on and actually ended up laying on the floor to get some sleep. I hesitated to mention this because really we should have gone and asked about it, but it was quite late when we went to bed and we felt bad waking Bill up.
I mention it now in case there are others, like us, who prefer a cool bedroom even in the winter. I'm betting if you address this upfront it can be fixed. -

This is a guys version of a B&B. No frilly stuff lying around. None of the flowery wallpaper.
It it no less comfortable and warm than any top B&B. I like the location and the accessibility to almost everything.
Our room has that feeling of comfort and peace. Both windows overlook the street leading to the house. One of them has a view of the lake. it's a good size room. An open closet with enough space to hang your clothes. Switches for that mood light effect when you need it is an excellent addition!
The bed was comfortable. It had enough firmness to garner a great sound sleep after a long day outdoors in the snow. White robes and excellent bath products are provided. Tons of soft towels.
The bathroom is an open space and big enough for two if you're so inclined.
Bill is a great host. He's funny and very personable. He's got those honest eyes. He cooks a mean breakfast and he got my eggs perfect!
So on the way home we all agreed that we will see him soon!Listed in: Hotels, TRUBATES Binge!

We had a lovely time at shooting star. The room was clean, comfortable and relaxing. The bed was very comfortable. The location is great, right across from the beach and Gar Woods a fun place for a drink. The owner of shooting star is awesome and his breakfasts are yummy. I can't wait to go back for ski season.

This is by far the friendliest, most comfortable and "good vibing" B&B I've ever enjoyed. The rooms are very comfortable (I toured them all before leaving), and I'd be perfectly happy spending the entire day lounging in any of them. But the open kitchen and living room area upstairs makes you feel right at home, with a comfy couch overlooking lake views. It gives you lots of options for hanging out and recharging between adventures.
The key, though, is Bill's incredible skill as a host. He's a wonderful guy to talk with, but also perfectly happy to give you all the space you'd like. The food was always just perfect, with great presentation, fresh ingredients and cooked just the way I like it. Good strong coffee, too.
We loved the heated floors in the bathroom, comfy robes, fireplaces in each room, free wi-fi, and easy access to skiing, hiking and beaches.
We'll definitely be back! -

Definitely consider staying here! This was my first experience at a bed and breakfast and the experience was one to remember. Bill, the owner, is incredibly personable and friendly. He took the time to show us around and make sure our stay was completely comfortable. Jacqueline, who we met at breakfast the first morning was also very friendly and down to earth.
The house is gorgeous with a great open common area upstairs. Breakfast is hearty and fresh, with lots of fresh fruit and proteins. From both the common area and the bedroom, there are gorgeous views of the lake. The house is actually just one block down and across the street from a little beach where there are activity rentals. It's also just a 10 minute drive from Tahoe City.
The room itself had the perfect balance of homey design and modern comfort. Their beds have duvet covers, not crappy old comforters - a big plus in my book and the bathroom had a big open stone shower. In general, everything was very clean and well-kept.
I'll definitely plan on coming back here in the winter for ski season! -

If you're looking for a romantic retreat & getaway from the city, here's your spot! The house is beautiful, the food is delicious and the service is authentically hospitable. Bill is kind, warm and humble and makes the stay feel even more like home.
That little alcove that others mention where you can look across the lake is also pretty amazing. Bring some champagne and make a night of looking at some shooting stars from that telescope.
I'm definitely going back again some time this summer! -

We had a wonderful stay at Shooting Star back in April. Its difficult to beat the perfect location, warm hospitality, and delicious breakfast. With that being said, it is a bed and breakfast - you are staying in someone's home, and there will be other guest. Alex and I like the B&B atmosphere, and Shooting Star is top notch. Our room was clean, well appointed, and had great little touches...Aveda products, little chocolates, etc.
Bill was friendly and had great knowledge of the area and nearby activities. If you are ready for a relaxing retreat with your special someone, this is the place for you. -

This bed and breakfast is fantastic and exactly what I imagine a B&B in Tahoe to look. The building is gorgeous and not your usual house, but one built with an interesting design and a unique layout.
Bill, the owner, is totally awesome, and there to make your stay one of the best experiences you have ever had. There is a beautiful nook where Bill has set up a telescope so you can check out the lake, the mountains, or the stars. Great idea!!
The lake isn't far, nor is the mini golf! Be warned though: you are going to have a great time!! -

My husband and I just got back today from a wonderful visit to the Shooting Star. We arrived on Saturday afternoon, not your typical 'front desk' experience at all. We were welcomed by Bill (the proprietor) who gave us a tour of the house. We weren't rushed at all and didn't take care of the payment stuff until he was positive we knew everything we wanted to know about our stay (he explained everything well, so we had no questions!).
Our room was cozy, with it's own thermostats and floor thermostat too! It was a good size with a comfy bed and a place to write if you want, and a stuffed chair to curl up on too. The bathroom was also a good size with a big open shower big enough for a party! I liked the Aveda bath products too. Also, the bath stuff was replenished daily.
Also at our disposal was the upstairs living area and a downstairs tv room. The upstairs has tons of games, a telescope, and books you can read. The tv room has more books and the tv, which you can watch if you wish. Both areas are very cozy with comfy chairs, couches and ottomans, pillows and throws! Just like a real home, not a generic hotel. I'm very tactile, so I loved all this.
The neighborhood is quiet and peaceful. It's within walking distance to a 7-11 for snacks and also a neighborhood spot that serves really delicious food and drink.
Breakfasts with Bill were super yummy and fresh. I think he uses organic ingredients too. We ate together and the three of us had fabulous conversation and got to know each other a bit.
Staying here was pretty much like renting a whole house! I would recommend this b&b to my friends and family. -

What an amazing bed and breakfast! Our room was spacious and comfortable and there was plenty of common space to spread out in with games, books and movies (my bf and I tried to teach ourselves backgammon and go). The house is in a quiet neighborhood not far at all from the lake; there's even a view from the house.
Bill (owner) is a very cool and personable guy; plus he cooks an amazing breakfast. He was nothing but helpful; everything from where to eat to directions.
I would recommend this place in a heart beat to anyone needing a place to stay in Tahoe. -

Great location with a view of the lake. The house and rooms are very comfortable, although it would be great to have a TV in the room. Ours didn't but others mights.
Breakfast was simple but good, just what we needed to start the day.
The rooms are slightly pricey, but that may be normal for Tahoe, I'm not sure.
Overall we had a great experience there and would stay again! -

My husband planned a surprise weekend getaway for the two of us to North Tahoe. He did such a great job picking our lodging at The Shooting Star. I love this B&B! We stayed in the large room upstairs and practically had the whole floor to ourselves. There are no other bedrooms on the top floor so you won't run into anyone else unless other guests want to hang out in the large common area (but there's another one downstairs) or if they're having breakfast at the same time you are.
The room was quite spacious and well decorated. The closet was extremely large...Harry Potter would be jealous! The king bed was very comfortable. And being pregnant, I appreciated all the pillows we were provided. Although my husband and I don't watch television when we're on vacation, there was a large flat screen with direct TV. There's also a DVD player if you're interested in staying in and watching a movie.
The bathroom was immaculate and well-equipped. There are his and her sinks and the shower is huge...with two shower heads. You are also provided Aveda bath products and an abundance of fresh clean towels.
The two mornings we were there, Bill (the owner) made breakfast for us. They were amazing!! The first morning we had a heaping plate of waffles, eggs, and sausage. The next morning he made pancakes, eggs, and bacon. There was also fresh fruit, water, juice, and coffee/tea. The breakfasts were delicious and filling. The man really goes above and beyond to make you feel welcomed and at home. He's also a really friendly and funny guy. You'll enjoy chatting with him :)
This place has everything you'll need to have a comfortable stay. The location is also perfect. You're about a block or so from the lake where there's a little beach and less than 10 minutes from Tahoe City. If you ask Bill, he can also tell you where the trails are if you're interested in a hike. If my husband and I plan another trip to the area, we'd definitely consider staying here again! -

Just stayed in the Bay Room for the weekend and it was delightful - it had all of the little touches that a B&B needs without being overkill. Soft towels, nice linens, a fireplace, a nice-sized whirlpool tub with jets, ambient floor heating, and down pillows - just to name a few of the amenities.
And, aside from the room, the entire place was very tranquil and put together. The breakfasts were both delicious and healthy without being too healthy for vacation(read: there was plenty of sausage). Bill's humor and friendliness also helped us feel right at home. He had the perfect balance of being helpful and available while not being intrusive at all.
It's in a pretty convenient location - we were able to get over to Alpine Meadows in about 20 minutes - and Tahoe City or Incline Village are about 10 minutes away.
If you're looking for a comfy, clean and low-key B&B - I would definitely recommend this spot. -

Stayed at this B&B just recently. Bill the owner is a very friendly and welcoming host and so is his staff. The place is clean, cozy and inviting. Bill walked us around and had free drinks for us in the fridge, which was a nice welcome on a hot summer's day. We enjoyed our stay however some of the the things can be improved. Some of the blinds were not functioning in the bedroom and the sofa had seen better days ( had stains ) which made it a bit uncomfortable to use. The Aspen suite is spacious and full of natural light, but the decor needs a revamp with lots of un matching furniture detracting from the overall harmony of the room. The california king bed is the best we have ever slept on in a B&B and is worth the money!!.
The two lower rooms are quite small and we didn't feel they are worth saving the 25 bucks. If you decide on staying here the Aspen suite is the best choice. -

This place is top-notch. I had never stayed at a bed and breakfast before, but I'm a pretty particular person, and this little B&B exceeded my expectations.
My boyfriend and I stayed in the Aspen room, which was very big and right across the hall from the kitchen and lounge area. We had a reservation for two nights and ended up spending most of our time in Tahoe at the inn. That was lucky for us, as the room was very well-furnished, with couches, a huge bed, candles, a flat-screen TV, a HUGE stand-in shower, and even a heated bathroom floor! The only downside to our room was that there was no fireplace or jacuzzi tub, which I really wanted. We asked to move to the Bay Room, which has both, but when Bill showed it to us, it wasn't fundamentally as well-appointed as the Aspen Room, so we stayed there. I felt bad for reversing our request but Bill didn't skip a beat and was not upset at all.
Bill made sure that we had everything we needed, and even helped us get the snow off our car when we tried to go ice-skating (we ended up just returning back to the inn because the highway closed). He asked us every day what we wanted for breakfast, and it looks like he only uses organic ingredients. The breakfasts were amazing! We had a great conversation with him, and the other guests were very nice as well. If you want to stay at a B&B in Tahoe, this is DEFINITELY the one you should pick. I would totally come back! -

My husband and I just got back from a nice relaxing weekend at Shooting Star. We were able to check in a little early since we got up to Tahoe early afternoon. Bill was outside and greeted us with a handshake and a smile.
The room was cozy and relaxing. Bill showed us around the house and let us know what was close by to do and where to eat.
The house was so warm and inviting. He has a little area where you can look across to the lake. Its like a little alcove it has a couch and a telescope so you can look at the lake or moon and stars.
We checked in put our stuff in the room and oh before I forget.. the bathroom! the shower was a walk in and it was huge! I loved it. Plenty of room for 2 and lots of room for just one person! You could do yoga in that shower! I also noticed Aveda products in the bathroom! What a nice surprise I have been to plenty of places that were expensive but none of them had Aveda!
So we went out for the day came back to change for dinner. When we came back from our dinner the house had lights on so we didn't come back to a dark unfamiliar house. Bill came by around 9ish to make sure we were ok and didn't need anything. My husband wasn't feeling well so Bill was cool to set him up with the pot that warmed up the water.
During our check in Bill asked us what time we wanted to eat and what we wanted to eat. I told him that my husband east pretty much anything for breakfast. I on the other hand do not eat eggs so as long as there was bacon for a bacon sandwich I was cool! He laughed and said he would see what he could do.
So cut to this morning... We lounged in our room. I heard Bill come in and start our breakfast. We got ready and went up to see what he and planned for us to eat.
Bill cooked eggs, toast, fresh berries and potatoes! Super yummy all of it. He even cooked me a bacon sandwich! what a guy!
We talked about pretty much everything from yelp to strippers! we stayed away from politics cause who wants to spoil a nice time.
We will for sure be back to this great place! I forgot to mention we were the only ones there so it was like we had the run of the place! There are tons of books and games to try out as well as a TV but with all the beauty outside of the windows who needs TV. Bill is a pretty cool cat and next time we will for sure have a beer or 3 with him.
Cheers Bill can't wait to go up again! -

I had a wonderful weekend at this B&B. Bill, the innkeeper is easygoing and friendly and he carefully took into account my allergies when fixing our delicious breakfast. He had great recommendations for dining and kayaking and the room was beautiful. I will caution that the outside of the house does not look like much but the inside more than made up for it. The location allows easy access to Tahoe City, Kings Beach, the lower Truckee river and incline village.

Shooting Star is just wonderful. You will definitely feel welcome here! If you prefer a place to sleep where no one will bother you and you can check in and out without ever seeing the owner, then this B&B is probably not for you. If, however, you enjoy the classic B&B experience of a comfortable night's sleep followed by a warm and friendly conversation with the owner while he cooks you breakfast, then you need to stay here. Bill (the owner) is one of the nicest and coolest guys you could meet. The building itself is lovely and well-designed. A perfect spot for your Tahoe vacation!

My wife and I came here on our honeymoon in July and had an absolute blast! Bill was very personable as was the young lady that worked for him (I'm so sorry but her name escapes me :o( ) The room was very clean, neat, and orderly. The breakfast in the morning was excellent as was the conversation with Bill and other guests.
Bill has done an excellent job making you feel like you're at a home away from home. The next time my wife and I are in Tahoe we are going to stay here again. Anyone that is looking to spend a few days in Lake Tahoe need to stay here. Thank you Bill for giving my wife and I a very memorable honeymoon! -

With 100s of hotels and at least 50 B&Bs under my proverbial belt, I give The Shooting Star four Peter Pan stars!! Nestled in a spinny of pine trees in quiet neighborhood just a block from the lake, I began to relax as soon as we pulled into the driveway. We stayed in the Aspen Room, which is the size of a small apartment just by itself. A comfortable sofa and chair are available for reading or watching a nice flat panel television set with cable or satellite premium channels or one could easily turn the set [by design] and enjoy it from the comfortable king sized bed in the room. Or, if you desire, you could sit at a small wooden table and play board games, hook up a Mac/PC and use the free internet access that was provided, and/or catch a snack. [Bill keeps fruit drinks and soda available in the refrigerator.] I like the small hallway between the suite's entrance door and the door to our room, which allowed for maximum privacy. A plush carpet was comfortable on the feet after a long day of hiking and the contemporary bathroom and shower -- stocked with plenty of plush towels -- made for a relaxing clean up before lounging at night. Plenty of windows gave us a view of the lake and adequate shades allowed my husband to sleep in total darkness as he is wont to do.
The Shooting Star was not the most elaborate, fancy-schmancy B&B at which I've stayed and there wasn't someone being "googly-gaggly" all over us, smothering us with fresh baked cookies when we arrived home at night. But, I have to say that Bill Matte, the proprietor and our host, greeted us with the welcome of an old friend, making sure that all of our needs were met and our questions were answered. He lent us his books with hiking trails noted, offering to have the top-rated massage therapists come in if we needed a massage for tight or sore muscles, and scheduling breakfast around our desired time of rising, not his. And, Bill proved himself to be a terrific cook, serving us three delicious (and different) healthy and hearty breakfasts each morning. Most enjoyable was the relaxed and interesting conversations we all enjoyed; Bill quietly demonstrated that he was well-taught at Cal :) and our conversations were lively, interesting, and memorable.
I would recommend The Shooting Star to my best friends and to the best members of my family (NOT the "out-laws", as it were). The Shooting Star is on "our rotation" of places where we would stay again. -

We had a great time here. Bill - the owner-operator of this B&B - has invested a lot of time and energy into building this place from the ground up, and you can tell. The decor is modern, clean and well suited to the mountains. It wasn't the frilly Victorian style characteristic of many B&Bs, which we appreciated. There was heating in the floors, great sound-proofing between the guest rooms, and a great view of the lake from the common area on the second floor. The breakfast was good and not full of the sugary cakes and sweets that we've had at many Midwestern B&Bs.

Sometimes you visit a place where everything plays the same notes as your heart. This is my place. I fell in love with the Shooting Star as soon as we drove up. The owner greeted us at the door and helped us with our bags. He was super friendly, personable yet very professional. The Inn is nestled in some lovely trees close to Lake Tahoe. The fireplace was burning in our room and a lovely "treat basket" (complimentary) was sitting on the breakfast table with beverages. The owner gave us a tour and a brief history of the home. He was funny, eager to help and full of local information. We had wine, cheese, crackers and a veggie plate in the afternoon with him. We gazed outside his beautiful living room window using his awesome telescope. The bathroom was heavenly and I couldn't wait to hop into the luxurious jacuzzi tub & once in, didn't want to get out. There were bath essentials and a heated tiled floor. The bed was incredibly comfortable and I slept like a baby. There were comfy chairs in the yard, etc for our use. The next morning a newspaper was waiting and breakfast smelled inviting. He made homemade banana pancakes that were out of this world with fresh fruit, juice, coffee and sausage and eggs... WOW . He was pleasant and we talked. We felt like his personal guest. He thought of and provided every comfort I could imagine - even robes.. We never felt like we were being rushed, intruded upon or uncomfortable. It was home away from home... in some ways even better... I can't wait to go back.

The Shooting Star is exactly what a Bed & Breakfast should be: A great location, a lovely comfortable room with nice amenities, terrific well prepared breakfasts served whenever we wanted, a host who provides friendly hospitality without being over-bearing or submitting guests to a lot of structure or schedules. You can relax in a comfy environment with a view of the lake, read or watch a movie or socialize with fellow guests over a glass of wine or cup of tea.
This little gem is in a great location in Carnelian Bay, which is a quiet lakeside town on the northwest shore of the lake, just outside of the craziness of Tahoe City, and across from Gar Woods - one of the better restaurants on the lake, and just behind CB's Pizza which is one of the best pizza places on the lake.
As someone who has been visiting Lake Tahoe for 45 years, I have found The Shooting Star to be the perfect place to stay. My husband and I have stayed there for the last 5 years on our anniversary and truly enjoy ourselves every time we stay. We'll be back again next year.
