I returned here for a massage. It was convenient to be able to just request an appointment online vs. having to call.  Yes, I'm that lazy!  If you're looking for a spacious spa with a spacious lounge where you can veg out for hours, this is not it.  The one unisex bathroom with the turn-key still bothers me here, but I am able to get over it.  If I want something to hang out for a few hours, I go to Great Jones.  If I want to spend a day at the spa, I'd probably go old school and go to Red Door... If I want to be able to walk a minimum number of blocks to get a dependable massage or facial at a reasonable cost (and where they do NOT push product post facial), I come here.  They were on time and I found the massage better than most places.

They used to be my gold standard, so much so that even after I'd moved, I'd make an appointment for a facial if I was in the city. The perfectly coiffed Japanese expat ladies who could be anywhere between the ages of 30-65 gliding in for regular appointments attested to their skills. I always viewed Shizuka as a more utilitarian place than fancy and gimmicky. They used Naturopathica, which I loved. Their aestheticians (particularly Lisa) were skilled and knew how to get things out without  leaving you with a face that needed any down time. Then Lisa disappeared, and the last facial I had was okay, but not that great. The more regular clientele also seems to have shifted? I definitely wouldn't make any special effort to head back.

For the price - this spa is for comfort -- meaning the extraction is weak. I purchased the Signature Micro Facial ($160 for 80 min). The facial party only lasted less then 20 min and the rest was massage that could be better.

It was pricey - and not worth it, a good spa if you just want to relax though

This Spa was disappointing, to say the very least. On our vacation to NYC, my husband and I opted to get a couple's massage at Shizuka. We arrived 20 minutes early and were told that the second therapist hadn't arrived yet. We waited an hour to even be seen, and had to get massages one after the other (not exactly the romantic atmosphere we were seeking). Then, the receptionist charged us for full price on one massage, instead of the "lunch time special" we were promised on the staggered massages.

Then, when we tipped, we were made to feel like we weren't leaving enough... The entire process cost us an entire afternoon of our vacation, instead of the hour we were banking on.

The massage wasn't even worth it, should've just gone for a walk in Central Park like we originally planned!

My room mate (and friend of course!) took advantage of their 2 for 1 Geisha Facial special and had a nice facial exfoliation done with nightingale droppings.  Sounds so nasty on SO many levels but it was actually a very pleasant experience.  My facialist was so sweet and did an excellent job.  The spa is clean, tranquil and very chic.  I left with my skin aglow and perfectly pampered.

I went here for a gel manicure and pedicure. Because I was late they only had time to do the manicure, which I was fine with. It's pricey but I figured that was ok because it would last a while. They have a guarantee that they will re-do it if it chips or peels within the first 10 days of the application. Around day 10/11 some peeling did begin but only at the fingertips and not at the base which meant I could just trim my nails with clippers and a file and the rest of the nail looked pristine. I just cut my nails which cut off the peeling part -- so I still have a very nice gel manicure that has lasted two full weeks (even though there was some peeling at the fingertips by day 10). I definitely recommend this over the OPI gel axxium which I have had about 4 times and only once was it successful (meaning it lasted the appropriate amount of time, while the other three times it was chipped or peeling within a week).

The salon is small but nice, smells good, and the staff is friendly. I'd go back for another gel manicure but for waxing, facials, massage etc I'll stick to Bliss.

This is my 2nd time getting a facial ever and first time at this place and it was during Spa Week so it cost half what it normally cost and I don't know if that was why, but it felt just ok to me.  I didn't get any extractions this time since I was afraid I would end up breaking out so it felt like they rubbed some lotion on my face and wiped it off.  They put this wasabi mask which makes your skin feel hot, but I didn't feel a thing.  They did say for some people they don't feel anything, but I really felt like I paid them to put lotion on my face and wipe it off.

Anyway, I didn't break out this time which was good, but I didn't notice any changes in my skin either.  I guess I had too high of an expectation.  A friend of mine who went with me had a Japanese masseuse while mine was caucasian and she loved her facial.  Maybe that's the difference?

What a pity. This place COULD work. They have this nice space, and their heart is in the right place, I think. However, their 80 minute facial is actually more like 40 minutes, because they leave you unattended for the 1st 10 minutes during the steam treatment and then, toward the end, w/ the mask on for 30 minutes. But that's not really the worst part. The woman (she appeared to be Russian) was terrible--her fingers felt bony and her touch was harsh. I have received significantly better facials in Chinatown for the 1/5 of the price.

$160 + tip for THAT? I don't think so. They need to hire better arithmeticians and think about the contents of the services they provide.

I've been to Shizuka Spa twice, once for the bird poo facial and once for a body scrub/sauna sesson.  The location (Rockefeller Center)  is convenient to get to, but inconvenient to leave if you use cabs!  The ambiance is nice and serene.  Well-kept.  I wasn't put off by peeling wallpaper or dingy facilities.  It is small and unisex, so make sure to use the little dressing rooms.

The Nightingale dropping facial is awesome.  I have long since given up on all facials and only do microderms, but when I learned about this fantastic Victoria Beckham-endorsed gross-sounding thing, I had to do it.  I LOVED it, and would get this done here every month if I could afford it.  It is the only facial I have tried which really and truly improves the skin in an obvious way.  (I went and found the poo powder online and do self-masks at home every week now-- much cheaper!)

The body scrub is refreshing and smells wonderful.  It's very scrubby without being oily, and the woman who did it was lovely (and silent--she didn't say much at all).  I liked stepping straight into the little shower cubicle to rinse off too-- very cute!  My only complaint was that it didn't drain very quickly.

The secret weapon here is the private sauna.  I had no idea they had this until last week, and it is awesome.  Your own private little sweatbox.  I will be coming back here just for that.  You can book sauna sessions, but you can have it free with any body treatment anyway!  I will absolutely be doing a $65 scrub + free sauna again!

I checked out Shizuka after reading an article in New York magazine online about their LED gel manicure.  They are also having a $40 manicure special until Labor Day.  This was my first time getting any kid of gel manicure.  Kimoko was my manicurist and she was very nice.  Heavy accented, but she was very knowledgable and helpful with any questions I had about the manicure. You get to pick from a few color options.  I decided on a natural pink with a darker pink/purple gradiation at the tip.  She uses the Presto brand LED gels.  With each layer that she applys, you stick your hand under the LED light for a few seconds and "presto" it's dry.  After a basic manicure, she applies a base coat, two color coats, and then the top coat. I love my manicure (check pic posted).  Hopefully it lasts the entire two weeks because I am extremely rough with my hands. I will you guys a status update soon!

This place is very famous so I thought they give me a great job. I did body scrub and facial massage. The esthetician was young Japanese American girl. She was nice, but when she started talking about her boyfriend.. she never stop talking..I was so tired even I paid for expensive services.. that was sad. massage was OK, not so special.

I went to Shizuka to try their LED gel manicure and it was completely worth it. I have horrible nails that seem to repel polish so I thought this would be a good option for me (it was). Every member of the staff is polite and gracious, the technician who has done my nails (Fumi) is personable and knowledgeable and the parts of the facility that I've seen are clean and provide a serene setting. I recently had a mix-up with a charge and the owner herself called me to apologize and had the mistake corrected immediately.

The spa focuses mainly on skin care so I will be trying some of those treatments next. I highly recommend Shizuka.

Nice place for a massage, but the therapists are hit or miss.  I only went 4 times, and stopped, because I never learned the name of the first massage therapist that worked on me, and she was better than the next 3 people that they gave me.

This is a great spa and salon. It is such a relaxing environment that you forget that it is right in the middle of midtown. LOVE it.

A bit pricey but the outcome is worth it. Only downside is that while most places charge an extra $5-10 dollars for French, they charge an extra $20. That can put a damper on your visit. But overall, a good spot.

Not quite A-ok in my opinion. Although like somebody else said, this place could really work, they just seem to get it all wrong. I went during spa week because, and only because of the infrared sauna. I used to do it in LA and fell in love.

A couple of days after I booked my appointment they called me to see if I could reschedule the time because they couldn't find a masseuse for me. I thought that was a bit strange because its not like I was going on Christmas day, but regardless, I just couldn't move the date because I had picked the date and time based on an engagement I had that evening. These people called me back and forth three times over a week telling me they were still trying to locate a therapist. Finally, the day before my appointment they called and said they only could find a masseur, although I had indicated I preferred a female.  Well, I let that one go and went to the salon more excited about the sauna than the massage anyway.

The place was warm, somewhat classy and welcoming. I still got the "spa" feeling even though I was standing in an office building in the middle of midtown. They did well on maximizing their space as well as on the interior design. Also, the amenities were pretty excellent and thoughtful, snacks, nuts, fruits, juice, cucumber water etc... They gave me a cute little cotton bag containing a beautiful Japanese robe and some sleepers. The stark cleanliness was pretty impressive too and much appreciated. Now my beloved infrared sauna. Except for the fact that I had to figure out and control the temperature and timing by myself, which sucked a little because it took a few minutes off my treatment, I felt so happy and relieved once I was finally seating inside, lounging with a magazine and some fresh water. My bliss was short-lived however because they came and got me before my 30 minutes were up. I was a bit shocked a bit furious a bit disappointed, many bits of unhappy feelings. Thank god the heat had put me in an elevated state of relaxation and I didn't have the will nor the strength to argue. Next, the massage. I showered in their super complicated Swiss shower they are so proud of but fail to explain to you so what you get is just a plain old regular shower ONCE you have figured out how to turn it on and adjust the temperatures. The sauna was a piece of cake compared to that futuristic mess.

I changed into the pretty Japanese robe and waited in the private lounge for the masseur to come and get me. That's when the snacks and nuts came in handy for me, I was starved. After a while an imposing man with a white cane came in looking everywhere but in my direction.

    Yelp, my masseur was blind.

I never had anything against blind people and I was indeed happy that the spa didn't discriminate against them either, but after everything that had happened from the time I had booked the appointment and this very moment, I thought, "wow, a blind masseur really? gee, thanks I'd never though of that..."  The massage in itself was nice, I can't say bad or great, just nice. I was tripping out the whole time I think, unconsciously. Deep down I must have thought how strange the whole thing was. I didn't want a man to massage me, now I had a blind man giving me a Swedish massage... He was really nice mind you... I tried to relax, did for a while, but yes I confess, I wanted out. I eventually got up, changed, paid, left a generous tip and walked out. Too bad I wasn't in a good mood anymore.
