Shirley Plantation, Virginia's oldest plantation, has been home to the Hill-Carter family for 12 generations.  They are still there, but open the first floor of the house & the grounds up to the public.  It is still a working plantation -- the country's oldest family business (since 1613 - the main house began contruction in 1723).

The layout is like a formal English estate - symmetrical.  Most of the buildings have survived and can be viewed.  This is one of Robert E. Lee's ancestral homes and it is said that he went toschool in the Laundry building where you buy your $10.50 admission ticket.

Visit the 300+ year old WIllow Oak on the banks of the James River.  Wander through the gardens.  Looking at the working farm land surrounding the buildings.  Enjoy a piece of American history.
