I came here today to get my hair highlighted for the first time and to get a trim, and I'm pretty satisfied with the results (especially for the price!) I had to wait for about an hour before somebody attended to me, and the whole process (full highlights without bleaching and cut) took about 4 hours. I specifically wanted Johnny to do my hair, but he only did the cut and another nice boy did the highlighting and blow-drying/straightening. My only two complaints are that it took a long time, and the dye in the back of my hair didn't fully sink in since that part was done last. Johnny is so nice and attentive. He gives advice but definitely listens and does what YOU want. He had about a million girls waiting for him, but he still manages to do a great job even though he cuts your hair ridiculously quickly.

Overall it was a good experience and I will definitely be coming back (though maybe right when they open, so I won't have to wait). Full highlights and cut for super long hair = less than 100$$. GREAT DEAL!!!

I started coming here after I got tired of waiting for Laura over at HK salon. I heard a lot about Johnny, but I haven't had the chance to get my hair cut by him. I usually ask for Chin - very friendly and cuts my hair just the way I like it! From looking around, it looks like the whole staff is pretty talented; if all else fails, just bring a picture for them to follow.
I see a lot of people mentioning the wait time for Johnny, and after coming here to get my hair cut early in the weekday mornings, I can advise you to come during those times because he is either not busy or just has one other customer =)

I went few weeks ago to change my hair style...of course I had to wait for Johnny (my favorite stylist)...he is consistent and knows what he is doing.  I just get annoyed about the long wait....and how he is constantly jumping from one customer to another while he is working on your hair....I have tried weekdays, weekends, mornings, afternoon...wait time is still a minimum of 1.5 hour (minimum) for a cut...and be prepared to spend 5 hours there if you were getting the japanese straight perm. Make sure you have nothing else to do before you go...and it's always helpful to have a pic or an idea of what you want..

JOhnny is worth waiting for...it's just me...i am impatient..wish he could take appointments....oh one time he gave me a small bottle of paul mitchell styling balm from free..yay!

I've only been here once and it didn't leave the impression that I came to expect after reading the reviews here. If anything, the wait was the least of my concerns since it was only about a half an hour.

I asked for Johnny, as recommended. When it was my turn, he seemed a bit annoyed. I couldn't blame him since I came in two hours before closing or he could have been having an off day. I didn't know exactly what I wanted and was hoping he could provide some input, but he didn't deliver. He urged me to get a straight perm right off the bat, but of course I didn't because that wasn't what I came for and my hair is straight enough! He got annoyed and asked "Well, what is it that you want??" And then I got annoyed, lol.

It wasn't the best experience and my haircut was so-so. I could have gotten the same results at my usual salon for $10 less minus the attitude.

I found this place because a friend of mine came to work with a great cut and I have been pouncing on every Asian girl I see with a halfway decent cut to find out who does her hair.  Do you know how difficult it is to find a good mid-range salon that knows how to cut Asian hair--and knows how to give you what you didn't even know you needed?

Johnny's a fussy HK type, really stylish and speaks with the confidence of decades' worth of experience.  I just went in and was like, I need something different.  Make me look good, and don't cut my hair too short.  Several things he did that no other stylist has ever done:

1) Noticed that my hair is actually curly in patches.  I always thought my hair was dry and crinkly, and other stylists have commented that my hair is dry.  Johnny pursed his lips and retorted, "you don't dye your hair, you barely blow-dry, you don't swim and you don't go out in the sun.  How can your hair be dry?"  He cut off a curly lock and showed me.  "It's curly," he declared.  Touche.

2) Dared to change my part.  I mean I wanted something different and no other stylist ever cut my hair with much imagination.  Johnny took one look at my face and knew exactly how to make the perfect frame for it.  He told me it would take a while for my hair to cooperate, but assured me it would be much better parted on the right side, than slightly off-the-middle like I had it before.  It gave me instant style.

3) Dared to give me bangs.  Not just any bangs, but  bangs the length you normally hate because it's not quite short enough to qualify as bona fide bangs, but not long enough to tuck behind your ears.  Swept to the side, though, they were perfect.

4) Didn't push me to get my hair highlighted.  He told me it would give my black hair more dimension, but didn't force the issue.

After 3 long years of living in the Bay Area and searching for the right stylist, I think I've finally found my guy.

I forgot to update this! For the past 7 months I have had purple lowlights. :) They are so pretty and the color stays in for a long time (about 10 weeks for me) if you take care of your hair. I really like the purple mixed in with my dark hair because it's very subtle. You really do not notice it unless you are up close to me or under the sun. Also, the purple changes as it fades out. It goes from a dark... almost blue color to a lighter and brighter purple. All the shades are pretty! :) I went in about 4 weeks ago to try to go back to blond for the summer, but I still left with purple lowlights again! This time he added a few strands of magenta to go on top of the purple lowlights, so it's a mix of pretty colors!

Love my hair. I always get compliments when I'm out and about. Thanks Johnny!

I went to see Johnny last Saturday (11/29/08).  I found him on Yelp and decided to see him based on the reviews.

I am the classic salon whore...... I have never seen the same stylist more than 3 times.  I at least give them a second if not a third time to redem my trust.  But I think I've found the one that I will keep going back to.

He doesn't take appointments but I called in advance to see how busy he was and he told me to come in after 5PM.  I waited about 15-30 minutes from the time he saw me.  I got my hair washed while I waited.  The staff was very friendly, always asking me if I needed anything and grabbing magazines for me to look at while I waited.

Johnny was very attentive even though he saw 2 other clients while he worked with me.  He listened to my preferences and concerns, while I asked for suggestions.  He is quick and efficient.

Oh my gosh.... Can I say HAPPY & SATISFIED!!!

I got a cut and color in 2 1/2 hours tops, along with the wait time, and at a very, very reasonable rate.  I can honestly say that I got away cheap and HE is WORTH every single penny and more!!!!

I went here on the recommendation of a friend of mine. I always noticed that she had fantastic hair so I had to find out who was doing it. She told me Johnny from Shing's! So, I decided to give him a try. The first time I asked him to dye my hair a dark burgundy red with black lowlights. A lot of times, I have trouble describing my "vision" to the hair dresser but Johnny knew exactly what I wanted and I walked out a very happy customer.

My first visit was three months ago and just this past week I decided I needed a change. Once again, Johnny delivered and knew exactly what I was talking about! Most Chinese hairstylists are not modern enough and do not understand the concepts. But Johnny is definitely not one of those. My color turned out just the way I described and pictured it, rich nice brown with subtle face framing highlights. The way he trimmed my hair was very nice too, my natural curls flip at just the right places.

I didn't want to forget the nice girl who colors my hair! I don't know her name but she's super sweet and both times Johnny tells her what I want, and she's the one that actually colors my hair. I should thank her as well because she does a great job. When I was sitting under the chair that heats your hair, I was reading a book and the sunlight was shining right on me. She was so sweet that she closed the blinds for me.

They use great products on your hair. I had red hair for 3 months and I was still getting compliments on it up until I decided to change my color to brown. Didn't wash out to orange or brown but stayed a true red!

I'll be back for sure :D

aw, my first experience here was needing to get my hair colored for my one year  anniversary & my friend had introduced me to this salon. I called in 30 minutes prior to my appointment i had set up with Tracy and arranged to see Johnny for tips and coloring.

I waited for about 30 minutes and explained to Johnny what i had in mind. I love how i told him what i wanted and he also voiced out his suggestions. Since I have many layers, i wanted to get a couple of highlights, but he had mention it'll look funny for my hair since it's not as syncronized or same hair length. The lady who colored my hair was quiet and patient..she didn't seem to rush which was a good thing. I was under the hairdryer for a good 45 minutes and since the sun was setting around 6ishpm, the sun was in my eyes...it was so sweet of them to switch seats due to the brightness of the sunset, very thoughtful! As i was sitting waiting for my hairdye to sink in, Johnny grabbed a magazine for me to read, how sweet!

once i got my hairdyed, they washed my hair numerous times to get the color out. The reason why i like this place is because they wash it so thorough that when you are to rinse at home, not much dye is left over. Johnny finalized my hair and the color and gave a little volume to my hair with a couple of snips and gave me advice of how to take care of my hair.

i agree with all the yelpers, he listens to what you want carefully and definitely wants you to be satisfied.

i walked out of the salon with a smile, i will be coming back soon!

Been coming to here about 5 years (every 8 weeks). I heard a lot of great things about Johnny (from fellow Yelpers) who I believe is the owner, but I never had my hair cut by him, because there's always a wait for him, compare to my regular lady Chin. Also, I don't want to hurt Chin's feelings if she saw me replace her for Johnny.

why 4 stars?

1: reasonable price for a cut. But if you add shampoo and style during your cut, the price will go up.
2: fast & good service cut for men and kids. My young boy cousins been cutting their hair at Shings since they were a baby - No wait time. For the ladies, there will be a wait if you go on the weekends.
3:clean environment & everyone in there is friendly. (about 6-9 of them)
4: I will get the cut/style I want if I tell them exactly what I want, (every little details) I've had two of the ladies in there to cut my hair, Kelly & Chin, they are both every good in terms of what exactly you want. I want mine straight, long layers & thinned out. - GREAT. I'm happy. BUT...

Why negative 1 star? Cause if you show them a celebrity picture - example, Victoria Posh's laser-clean Bob. Then no, the stylist there can't achieve it. I think it's just too advanced for their technical skills. They will cut it a bob, but it won't be as clean & perfect. So that's the only problem I have with them, their cutting skills only go so far. But I can't say that for the Owner - Johny, so maybe I will give him a try the next I go.

I've been to a lot of hair salons, trying to find a good place that will do a consistent nice job on my hair and since I tried this place I've been coming back here.

This place is almost always packed, but I recently found out that a good time to go is around lunch time mon-weds.

The people here are pretty friendly and usually they ask you what you want as you enter the door.

A couple people have cut my hair already and theres 2 people I like so far. One is Chin (she the girl with long straight black hair) and the other one is this older lady but I cant remember her name right now but shes the one that doesnt have a crazy hair style. They always cut my hair the way I want it and they dont force me to get my hair colored with every cut like some other places do.

I think the first time I got a hair cut here, I got a little mad coz this one guy (he has long blondish looking hair and thick framed glasses ---is that Johnny?) was about to cut my hair. It has been in a pony tail for most of the day and I said I want to get shampooed too. He gave me a lecture on taking care of my hair coz its all dented from the pony tail. In my head I was like "hey I take care of my hair, I just like tying my hair". He did a nice job cutting my hair but I was a little pissed off with the lecture. But then I realized--hey they really do care about hair at that place!

The do colors, permanent straightening (they always recommend this to me, highlight, perms and a bunch of other stuff.

Prices are reasonable. I have shorter hair so mine usually comes out to about 25-35$ which is pretty cheap. I mean its not Supercuts (8$ cut) but its really good quality cut if you dont want to pay 100$ or more for your hair.

Recommended to me by two coworkers who had their Japanese straightening done here, I've gone back several times for cuts, coloring, and straightening, and perms.  They were quick to advise to always ask for Johnny, and as other yelpers mention, it comes at a price.  Most girls ask for him so there is usually a wait.  Most of the times I've been there (either after work or on the weekends) it hasn't been that bad.  The day I was getting the Japanese straightening, it happened to be empty, which seemed highly unusual.

Johnny only really does the cutting, especially if the place is crowded.  If not busy, he some times does the washing, coloring, perms, and/or styling himself.  Most of the times, his assistants do it for him, but he chooses the color, checks on the perms, etc.   He's very good at what he does, and is friendly and likes to chat.  I usually just tell him what kind of look I'm going for, and let him make suggestions.  So far, no regrets.

I've been to Shing's Hair Studio a couple of times now, and I really only have one complaint. THE WAIT. It seems that there will always be a wait, even if you call ahead and have an "appointment" (which isn't really an appointment because they don't take them, they just tell you if they think there will be time for you).

The people who work there are very nice and the prices are very reasonable (I had my hair cut, dyed, and highlighted for $100). Based on service alone I would go back but next time, I'm bringing a book. A huge one.

I had been going to Johnny at Shing's the past four years now.  It's only been cut and highlighting (for under $100).  The first time I went, I was amazed at not only how trendy Johnny made my hair looked, but also he was able to deliver the results with such speed and agility.  Since then, I had been referring him to every one I knew who wanted short hair.

Recently, I was a little tired of his style.  I thought it was him.  But when I went to a professional hair salon that would've charged me more than double the price for the same haircut, the lady told me there was nothing wrong with the way he had cut it.  She, even, seemed surprised by his work!

Johnny, when you catch him at a non-busy time, really takes care of you.  He has a wealth of knowledge about Asian hair, and face-shapes.  Most important, he is still passionate about what he does.  Really, the only thing is that you have to catch him at a non-busy time/season or prepare yourself to wait at least one hour because he doesn't take appointments.

Today, on an off-season day, with cut and highlight, I went there at 9 in the morning (just as they open), I didn't get out until 11:30.  So you can do the math.  On a busy time and day, it could easily go for 3-4 hours.  But he's well worth the wait.

To this day, I still highly recommend him to all women of any age.  If you're non-Asian, the clientele that I've seen has only been Asian, but it certainly doesn't hurt to try!

Shing's provides haircuts, highlights and straight perms for really reasonable prices. The clientele is almost all Asian, so they definitely understand Asian hair.

The environment is clean, but don't expect a high-end salon. Johnny is the owner and also the best stylist there. They don't really take appointments, so expect a wait for him on the weekends.

so after the many hair debacles i've had this year (i've gotten it cut three times since january), i've decided that Johnny is the ONLY person allowed to cut my hair ever again.

he just knows what to do. he saw my hair, winced, listened to me complain about my nasty layers, and worked his magic in under half an hour.

good god, he's amazing. plus, he's super friendly. i was flipping through some magazine while he was clipping away and we spent most of the time discussing whether or not Jessica Alba was still a megastar after she became pregnant (he said no, i said yes).

while he was cutting, he told me exactly what he was doing and gave me pointers on how to style my hair correctly. he also told me to never cut my own bangs ever again, and i've kept my promise! i went back two months later and he trimmed them for FREE. yup, i basically love him.

i only got charged $24 for my haircut, too. *beams*

ps. they don't take appointments! prepare to wait a while but trust me, Johnny's worth any amount of wait!

The first time I got my haircut here I wasn't very impressed. Like some other reviewers, I think he gave me the same haircut as the woman who got her haircut before me. However, I chose to come back a second time because my hair grew out of his haircut really nicely

My second time here I had come after having a friend chop off 10 inches of my hair to donate. I was here from 1 pm - 4 pm. 3.5 hours waiting, 1/2 an hour getting my haircut. I would definitely recommend bringing something to do if you come.

Once my turn finally came around, I showed Johnny pictures of what I wanted. He bluntly told me that it wouldn't work because of my hair length and so I told him to just make it look okay.

He did more than okay! I walked out of there after four hours with the best haircut of my life, despite the fact that my hair shorter than it ever has been. I now think that it is definitely worth the wait, but I would suggest calling ahead to make sure that he's there. I went on New Year's Eve and he said that he wasn't going to be there for the rest of the week because he was going on vacation. The salon is very nice for an Asian place (you know what I mean!) and despite being blunt regarding your hair, Johnny is a very nice person.

I've been going to Shings' for 3 years.  Ask for Johnny, he's the owner.  I've only gone for hair cuts and colour... i don't particularly like to colour my hair, but last time I decided to go for it and he did a good job.  Johnny has a tendency to trim and trim and trim....  so you have to watch him and make sure he doesn't trim too much, but he does a GREAT job esp. with THICK hair.  Just make sure you let him know EXACTLY what you are looking for.

They also wash and style your hair + cut for about $35 total.

Unfortunately, they don't take appointments, so get there early on the weekends, b/c they fill up quickly.

I wanted to try out Shing's hair salon because my cousins have been raving about the owner and how he cuts hair perfectly and he charges reasonably.
But what I didn't come to realize is that this guy DOES NOT TAKE APPOINTMENTS. Which is a rude awakening. I came in an asked him how long would it be, he told me that he had 4 people in front of me, and most likely it would be at least 4 hours. I walked out and hoped for a positive outcome the next day.

Next day I came back, same thing, I was wondering if these women got here at 9:00 am to reserve their spots or what, I was surprised to the fact that people were already waiting for him.

My next mission there will be before Chinese New Year February 7th, so hopefully I will make it in there to know how "great" this guys really is.

Two words: BUTCHERED HAIR!

My Aunt recommended this place to me. I always like trying new places when it comes to hair, until I find the right place. So I gave this place a shot. I came in to this place with long hair and I wanted layers, STRICTLY layers. I brought in a picture like I always do so that they know exactly how I want my hair done. A middle-aged woman cut my hair. I knew I shuoldve asked for one of the young ones. I showed her my pictured and asked her to thin out my hair since my hair was thick. She said ok and chopped away. She didnt even talk to me or walk me through the haircut so basically, she did her own thing. End product? Butchered hair! My hair ended up looking slightly like a mullet. She ruined my haircut down to the last cut. It was awful.

I'm one of those people who do not get many haircuts, just because I've had bad experiences in the past. This place, like all other asian places, are typical! Nothing spectacular, but I did LOVE how my haircut turned out. The staff are friendly, which is a plus. I'm going back. That's what matters right? If your happy with how your hair turns out :)

Johnny is the best! he always cut my hair in perfection, do not ask for others, wait for him ONLY
And u ladies should trust me with him, im very very picky about my hair. I have thick straight asian hair, and Johnny always give me a nice layers, not the crazy japanese layers that make your hair limps.I wouldnt go there for color, especially highlite.Last time, he charged me $27 for hair cut.
The only downside is he doesnt take reservation. First come first serve, and if u come on weekend, dont wait with empty stomach, coz u'll wait forever.

Johnny did an awesome job on my A-line bob the very first time that I went to him! He can tell from your face shape right away if the haircut you want will work. The wait time for me was nothing because I called ahead (thanks to reading some of these reviews too) and asked him how many people were ahead of me. He told me 2 people so to come in 30-40 mins. I went in and started to read one magazine and he was ready for me. I would advise to call ahead if you are nearby so you can grab a bite to eat if you have to wait or something before hand!

I use to come here in high school to get my hair cut but after i went to school in socal I started going somewhere else since it was too much of a hassle for me to keep coming back for a haircut. I always had Johnny cut my hair, he is the owner and always is super busy. He speaks english, chinese and vietnamese. If you are looking for someone who handles alot of asian hair then he would be a good choice. The only thing I don't like is the fact he thins out your hair alot. I was growing my hair out the last time I went to him and he took half of my hair away. Kind of sad but I have a lot of hair and he thinned it out like crazy to "lighten the look". I just prefer to not go here anymore since he is so busy, he doesn't take the time to really cut your hair, he just goes super fast so he can fit all his clients in one day. My advice, go super early to get your hair cut and the prices are pretty fair.
