Better than most Asian restaurants in Lakeland, sushi, teriyaki and tempura are all nicely done. The makizushi (sushi rolls) are quite creative and done well, sashimi/nigiri as good as I've ever had.
I think at this point, we've had just about everything on the dinner menu, and liked it all. When we want a nice meal with no wait, Shingetsu is our go-to, and always pleases. Mama-san is very sweet every time we go, very firm with the waitstaff, and the itamae (sushi chef). We're usually in the $20-25 per head range. My wife and I have both been to Japan (she lived there for three years) and agree it's quite authentic. Unfortunately for Mama-san, Lakeland seems reticent about Japanese-style food; their loss, our gain. -

Fine Japanese dining. My meal began with Ramune, a strawberry soda served in the "fun" bottle, with a little rolling crystal ball beneath the opening. I ordered a tofu bento box for lunch....steamed rice, California roll (sushi), hot veggies in a delicious white sauce, fried tofu cubes (Mmmm!) all a la chopsticks. Enjoyed hearing the sushi maker and hostess chat in Nihongo (Japanese), both from Tokyo. Can't wait to go back and try the udon noodles, sushi, and many other authentic selections reminding me of my travels East!
They do have happy hour specials for under $10 and a full sushi bar. On a later visit, I had the chicken teriyaki dinner. It was very moist in a nice broth, but different from the "yakitori" flavor I was expecting. The $14 meal included salad with ginger dressing, miso or house soup, steamed rice, vegetable and entree. It was a fair price for a good meal. I recommend the house soup--a soy broth with thin carrots and onions. They also have a nice mild pork cutlet "katsu" and a wonderful spicy shrimp in a light batter. Several fabulous appetizers I've tried" Crab rangoon--dainty--5 pieces at $4, a cucumber-crabstick salad, and hot salted edamame.
I also love the red bean or green tea ice creams! Shingetsu continues to earn five stars! They're hosting sake and plum wine tastings the second Saturday of the month--very worth the experience. -

Serviceable Japanese food. I've eaten there 3 times this week (not many options for non-chain restaurants here) The sushi was better than expected and the Katsu Dunburi was pretty damn good. I'd pass on the Shrimp Balls which are just deep fried Shumai. The wings are really quite good. Kay who owns the place is very sweet and quite a character.
They've been having a singer performing on Friday & Saturday which is odd but OK.
Definitely try the place if you happen by.
