I was so HAPPY when they finally open a Shin-Sen-Gumi around my area!! This is DE best Ramen place in the San Gabriel area. It just feels like what a Ramen restaurant should feel like.
When you walk in they yell at you!! When you order they yell the order to the cook! And when you pay and leave they yell at you!! Just AWESOME!! but the best part about this place is the Ramen... no duh!! you have the pick of getting it hard of soft :) the soft ramen takes a bit longer to make so the hard stuff is the way to go!! Don't forget to keep the Ramen coming!!! OHHHH my mouth is watering just thinking about it!!!
FINALLY.
After months of reading drool-inducing reviews, I came to Shin-Sen-Gumi to test the highly-acclaimed ramen noodles of SGV. I was ready to have my socks knocked off by the "authentic" broth flavor and "perfectly cooked" noodles. I wasn't, however, ready to have my eardrums blown out by the overly excited waitresses. Though very friendly, I didn't feel the shouting of every syllable was necessary.
Somewhat unnerverd, I marked off the order checklist for my preference of the oiliness and saltiness of soup, as well as firmness of noodles. Not sure where their standards were set, I selected "medium" for all. I also ordered a side of spam musubi, seeing that the Colombian wasn't there to make faces at my love for salty excess pork parts.
The spam musubi was disappointing and heavy on the rice, forcing me to make a mess by picking out the innards. Though the ramen noodles were perfect, the soup was a bit watered down for my taste. Considering the lack of ramen options in SGV, I'll probably be back to order a stronger broth. But if they open a Daikokuya in the neighborhood, you can bet that I'll be the first to show this place my flat behind.

I've learned the only Japanese word that I will ever need to know.....kaedama.
This placed was perfectly placed; on Valley just off of Walnut Grove. I like it because any further down Valley, you get a ton more restaurants with an assload of people waiting to eat there.
This place is so good, I went for thirds. The only problem is (which really isn't a problem considering how satisfied I was), your 7 dollar bowl could turn into a 30 dollar bowl of ramen. With all the add-ons and refills, your bowl of ramen could get pricey, but, as the old saying goes, you get what you pay for.
Also, I love this place because it gives me an excuse to visit my sis. There's four of us (siblings) and she's the one who decided to live outside the 10 mile radius that the rest of us live in. I drive that far to eat, might as well stop by her pad in Pasadena.
In short, I get good food and I get to visit my sister; I don't think that should get anything less than 5 stars.

Man, am I pregnant again? hmmmm.... I can't be.. but I can't seem to shake this ramen craving off!
The worst part is that there isn't a ramen place within a 15 mile radius to my house and that thought just makes my craving even a lot stronger. I ate Asa last week and I couldn't stop thinking about ramen since. To torture myself even more, I have been reading most of the Yelp reviews on ramen all week!
Anyway, when ramen calls, I usually go to Tampopo in Rowland Heights and I was devastated when I found out they closed. Next closest would be Foo Foo Tei in Hacienda Heights but the wait there, even on a weeknight can be so unbearable. Then, I came across this place. Rosemead? wow..... not as far as L.A. so that's doable. I called the BF at work, and it was a date!
I must say, I enjoyed every bite / slurp of my ramen. I loved how they gave you options; light, medium, strong broth; soft, regular, hard noodles; light, medium, strong oil; etc... etc.... My only gripe was having been charged for every additional item you want added to your bowl like pork, seaweed, spicy miso, egg.... It was worth it though. I really enjoyed my ramen. It was deeeeelicious. Another added bonus, was the 97cent noodle refills. That was a wonderful idea, especially for the BF who had 3 servings of noodles.
Service was fantastic. They were fast and very friendly. This place most definitely makes it in my book.
p.s. - i'm not pregnant, the weird craving went away after my very satisfying meal here =)

RAMEN: Good. It's as consistent as you'd expect a chain to be.
SERVICE: Wait staff is friendly, but the waiter we had messed up our order. It was probably because he couldn't read the handwriting and communicating with him wasn't very easy. That was a bit frustrating as instead of clarifying the order he went ahead with it.
LOCATION: Not so good.
- located in a crazy super busy Empire Commercial Center minimall
- trying to find parking on a Sat/Sun is a chore
With spending five minutes looking for parking and then another half an hour waiting for my friends to find parking, I was seriously ready to give up. It's ridiculous. I'm sure weekdays aren't as bad, but I rarely go out to eat on the weekdays so I highly doubt I'll be coming back to this SSG location.
If you don't live around Rosemead, I suggest you find an SSG or other ramen house to go to that you're closer to.

This review is courtesy of my friend Mike who went to eat here without me!
well i think it was too much hype. it was good but not great. mitsuwa was a lot better. im gonna break it down in my opinion:
all ramen was based off their pork and hakata style noodles.
soup- soup was made from their pork base soup. right amount of fat and oils but could use more pork flavor. i think they watered it out a lil bit. kyle said it was a lil bit too salty but i think it was just right. they also added just a good amount of diced scallions and ginger.
7 out of 10
noodles- since they were hakata based noodles (like the spaghetti noodles you ate at on valley by the hilton) i wasnt too fond of those... mitsuwas noodles were thicker and had more curl to it. im not even going to mention the amount. lets just say i finished by bowl in 8 bites. if you eat at night its perfect. but i would recommend ordering a double set of noodles if it was a lunch order.
6 out of 10
pork- soft and delicious but the slices were super thin!!!! even ordering a extra set didnt do justice!!
6 out of 10
gyoza- so van ordered a 12 piece set for all of us to munch on. man they should put a warning label on the menu: "objects appear larger than actual product". each piece of gyoza was about the length of a key and the width of a key head. you would have to order 4 more of those to satisfy 5 people at least. it was tasty but not enough filling (well what do you expect for a key sized hor devours).
6 out of 10
rice balls- kyle ordered a set. came out in 2 pieces. basically stir fried rice with soy sauce and bits of onion and carrots. cant rate this one since i didnt have any but kyle didnt seem too satisfied with it.
overall- it was good but not worth the price. the base ramen starts at 7 bucks and adding extra toppings will cost from 1.99 and up.
25/40--- not bad at all. Compared to mitsuwa ( i would give their ramen a 25/30 compared to shinsengumi 19/30) and foofoo tei mpk (12/30).
so thats my 2 cents :)

Shin Sen Gumi is decent. Points for being able to specify how you want your ramen cooked (noodle consistency, broth consistency, etc) Noodles were interesting, smaller in diameter but decent. Broth was rather on point, im assuming they didnt put too much msg (which some ramen spots are notorious for). The pork was aight, I've definately had better. Lunch specials are good and cheap, got a bowl of ramen and side of shredded chicken over rice (from the recommendation of my persistent coworkers) for around 8 clams. The chicken over rice reminded me of captain crunch (no joke!) and I craved some milk to pour over the dish. Next time I'll go with the spam masubi or pot stickers though. Also, id give this place a half star for the very enthusiastic staff, and the ackward cheers. Oh and the people there are actually japanese. word life to that.

I like it a lot! I get light oil, med soup base, med noodles, no ginger, +spicy miso. The soup is delicious. This is where I had my second date with my current bf! HI JESSE!! I was pleasantly surprised. This was my first japanese ramen experience and I have been hooked ever since. The food is not too salty and has a pretty good balance, and the spicy miso is like crack for us.
I'm a cheese lover, so I love their cheese egg rolls. Some people that I went with look at me funny when I eat the stick of melted cheese with a huge grin on my face. I don't care! its cheese and its yummy!
I honestly haven't tried many different ramen places and I can't compare this to many others. But I trust the fellow yelpers and by ramen addict bf when they say this stuff is GOOOOOOOOOOD.
The takana fried rice thing is good too. At first I thought it was weird, but now I love it! I like it by itself and with the soup. :)
Don't forget to order spicy miso with your bowl of ramen! I haven't yet seen anyone order the extra noodles. The portion is perfect for an average person. Lets not get fat just because the food is good ^^

I've eaten here numerous times and still like their ramen. In my opinion, their other dishes are mediocre. I'm not really a fan of their non-ramen dishes, but many of my friends enjoy them.
Since I've first started coming here, the service has dumbed down a little. The workers used to be extremely energetic, but they now seem a little more calm. The service is still good, but the experience isn't as phenomenal as before.
If you haven't tried Shinsengumi Hakata Ramen, I would encourage you to do so. The place gets pretty crowded on the weekends during lunch, so be prepared to wait a while unless you get their when they open.
Prior to coming here I had never eaten ramen!!! I was coerced into going by Ryan G lol and I have to admit i was pleasantly surprised that I would liked it so much. The Ramen is made to order and great PLUS they have coke in a can which i'm a huge fan of. This place is starting to turning into a hangover cure because i feel like we keep going the morning after partying.

Upon first glance, Shinsengumi has an uncanny resemblance to a ramen joint that one can find in the bustling cities of Japan (the only primary difference lies in the fact that this place is located in an actual plaza surrounded by other businesses and residential areas). Inside of the restaurant, there are plenty of culturally Japanese paraphernalia that give the decor a more personalized, homey ambiance. Though be warned: the noise levels can become intolerable--definitely not a place for a romantic date or business casual lunch.
The restaurant itself is part of a larger chain that is privately operated by Japanese people, which contributes to the authenticity and quality of their ramen. Having ramen at Shinsengumi is a joyous experience; customers are involved in every step of the process in making their ideal bowl of ramen. Not to mention, the seemingly endless combinations and variety of ramen will keep even the most stubborn foodie pleased.
After trying the ramen at Shinsengumi, I have been reluctant to go back to other local places, namely Ajisen Ramen. Shinsengumi's ramen has it all: the right balance of texture, density, and elasticity. When simmered in a bath of that hot, wondrous broth, the ramen becomes a culinary delight.
So why 4 stars? With affordable prices and quality ramen, Shinsengumi is a tiny piece of Japanese culture that one should want take a bite (or two) into.

Hi.
I'm Sue.
And I am a noodle-holic.
"HI SUE..."
Yes, that's right people. I am a noodle whore.
I love every type of noodle...whether it's fancy italian pasta to a 39 cent package of wannabe ramen from Vons, I'll blissfully eat them all.
Not to say that I don't have a discriminate palate. In fact quite the opposite...it's just that I'm a realist. I'm not going to expect my cup o' noodles to taste like the real thing.
But I absolutely love this place! I come here for lunch, and I love that you can choose how soft your noodles are, how strong the broth is, and how oily you'd like your soup. Strong, soft, and extra oily...that's how i like 'em!!
On top of that, you can add things to top it with (like shredded seaweed) so you are not at the mercy of the cook.
the only thing I wasn't fond of is all the yelling by the waiters/cooks. I know this is meant to make it more like an authentic japanese place, but the place ain't that big, so they pretty much in your ear when they shout. I've had many a conversation interrupted this way.
*slurp slurp!!*
'nuff said.

I was very skeptical upon entering the restaurant since I didn't have an amazing experience the first time I went to the location in Fountain Valley. Having tried Daifukoya (sp?) in J-town, my ramen standards were pretty high... or so I though. Upon taking my first bite of the elastic noodles that were neither too hard or soft, immersed in a perfect balance of a sweet and salty broth, this won me over. Perhaps I was a bit more hungry than usual or was with good company, but nonetheless-- I had a wonderful noodle experience. I'm sure that there are other ramen places that surpass the quality and tastes of Shin-Sen-Gumi; however, this place has certainly topped my list of favorites for the time being.
Shin-Sen-Gumi anyone? I'll be craving some soon.

If you like entertainment while you dine, this is the place for you. It's tucked away at the back of this little strip mall plaza. So if you aren't familiar with this area or location, you need to pull in to the parking area and go straight back. Unless you like Pho and the first one street side is the shit too.
It is brightly lit inside and from the outside, it appears to be green on the glass. Adds a little color to the place. Most of the time, you don't have to open the door because one of the people who work here will already have it open. They also announce your arrival and the rest of the guys and girl who work here repeat and I'm assuming they are saying welcome. So when you sit down, you pick out what you want to eat, when you place your order.................guess what........................they announce your order as well. At this point, I wish I knew how to speak Japanese to know what others were ordering. Might have been something funny to laugh about.
I like this place because if you order any of the ramen bowls, you want more noodles, you can order extra noodles for $0.99. You can have your ramen bowl spicy or medium or not spicy, salty or not so salty, noodles hard medium or soft, I like to make sure there is extra green onions in mine.
When you are done and ask for the check...................they announce that too. When you pay, they announce it and thank you. They open the door for you as you leave and announce that as well as a thank you. So from the many reviews for this place and my somewhat description, there shouldn't be any complaints about the service, it was absolutely over the top. I don't remember having dessert here but refills and the customizing of your own ramen is the best for me. Appetizers and extra noodles has my vote too. Go here and have a good meal.

All i have to say is AWESOME RAMEN. It's the best ramen in the San Gabriel area.
My boyfriend and I really love ramen. We try to experience new places as often as possible. I was real excited since Shin Sen Gumi is a well known franchise among various Japanese food... i.e. yakitori, shabu shabu, ramen, etc.
The second we walked into the restaurant, they yelled stuff at us....we had no idea what they were saying since they had heavy accents. We had to ask them 4 times to repeat what they were saying. Apparently, they were greeting us and asking us where we wanted to sit!
To make a long story short, the workers there shouted a lot. The whole time. Shouting as in calling out orders and communicating with each other, not as in verbally abusing us. Either way, it was freaking obnoxious. I just wanted to eat some damn ramen in peace.
The portion was sad. The price was too expensive. The noodles didn't come with anything except ginger. The add-ons were too expensive. The soup was mediocre. The only thing I liked about the place was the fact that you get to "customize" your selection.... salty, less salty, thicker ramen, more soup, etc etc.
I can honestly say how over rated this place is. The entire franchise for that matter. I've even eaten at their yakitori and shabu shabu locations. They were equally as disappointing. I've experienced sooo much better ramen at your local mom and pops. Heck, I've eaten better ramen made by other asians selling "Japanese" ramen!
Other than that.... I left hungry. Leaving hungry at a restaurant is an aweful feeling....

MMMMMMMMMM Ramen! This place is soooooo good! I feel very fortunate that I live fairly close to an awesome place like this. They offer a great Ramen menu and let the customers choose the intensity of every part of their Ramen experience. (oil, spicy, ramen consistency...) Definitely go here multiple times!
Love Shin Sen Gumi.....
i love it so much that i bought a Shin Sen Gumi Tee Shirt!
HAhahaha :)
today, they accidentally brought me a full sized ramen (i ordered half ramen and a half fried rice) and i am soooo full, i could explode!!
it was soooo yummy!
i got the ramen with extra chaysu, extra green onions, and spicy miso. YUM!
the people who work at this location are super nice, too :)

If you are a Ramen fan, you'd love this place. It's nice how authentic it is. I felt like I was in Japan. The Japanese waitresses are so cute. Anyway, they give you several options when building your Ramen noodles. Interesting concept. See for yourself. Don't take my word for it.
When i first walked in, I thought the dude was yelling at me, but then i realized its the way of their greeting. I like the customer service, very polite and energetic, i guess thats how they stay awake at work. The ramen is descend, not the best in the world, but it is pretty good. They have scale for you to pick like how hard the noodle you want, soup base, strong or light, and etc... Overall a good place for a ramen day.
UGH. i LOVE this place because its SO GOOD and always HITS THE SPOT...
but i HATE the wait... esp. on weekends.. the wait is FOREVER.
which usually means they are doing something right. right?
anyways.. yes.. Ramen with PORK.. (cha...shu?.. i give up) and CORN. because its CHEAP. and get EXTRA NOODLES... (why not.. its only a dollar more)
appetizers and everything else is super expensive.. so i usually pass.. plus.. the extra noodle (for a dollar) usually fills me up.
i always get the ice tea as well.. mmm...
Oh .. and for crying out loud finish your soup. its what your paying for.. dont be like my friend and leave a whole bowl if it and say your done.
(supposedly the process to make the soup takes DAYS).

The ramen is excellent! The pork is really good. If you're not full, you can order more noodles for a nominal fee. I would give it a five star, but you have to wait awhile to get seated due to the enormous amount of people waiting to eat at this place. BTW, this is an authentic Japanese restaurant. The waitresses and the guy cooking the noodles actually speak Japanese.
It's not good. It's not bad, but it's not good. I usually end up here once a month because it's close to my work and it is the best hangover cure in the area.
Their add-ons are ridiculously expensive. The noodles aren't that great. The soup isn't very complex. As far as ramen shops in LA go, you could do much better. But for me, it's close by, and when I get that craving, there's not much else I can do about it.
If I were commandeering a Death Star-like planet-destroying space station with a food court that could only hold 3 restaurants, this would be one of them (the others being In N Out and a toss-up between Sushi-Ya and Afloat Sushi in Pasadena).
I LOVE SHIN SEN GUMI! Holy crap! I really can't say enough good things about this place.
The servers are consistently awesome, fun and friendly. Yes, there is a lot of yelling in Japanese and no, I don't know what it means, but if a team of servers and ramen chefs saying "hello," "goodbye," and "thank you" in Japanese bothers you, then this place is not for you. It's definitely not the place to enjoy a quiet romantic dinner, but I've taken six friends to Shin Sen Gumi on separate occasions and all of them liked it. I'm pretty sure none of them had ever eaten at a ramen house before either.
Also, everyone that works there is super friendly and genuinely nice and it seems as though they take their jobs very seriously. It seems as though cooking and serving ramen is their passion. I can really appreciate that because I think it's a definite contrast to the attitude that most American wait staffs have. I would put them on the level of In N Out's employees, if not higher because it's clear that what they do is important to them and it shows. I definitely appreciate their efforts and energy!
The place has a really great vibe when you sit about halfway down the restaurant facing the ramen-making area. The walls have ramen-related photos and you can really feel the passion for ramen emanating from the place. I guess if you've never been there, that might sound silly, but you can definitely feel a lot of love.
As for the ramen itself, it's awesome! I'm by no means a ramen expert, I've only eaten at Orochan in J-Town and Kyushu in Van Nuys, but I prefer Shin Sen Gumi to both of those places. They ask you how firm you want the noodles (get firm), how strong you want the soup base (get strong), and how heavy the oil base should be (I get light). I get the full hakata ramen with extra chashu, spicy miso, flavored egg and green onions and ginger. They also offer an extra serving of noodles for $0.95. What a deal!
With a drink and tip, it's $16 well spent.

all i have to say is: shin-sen-yummy!
i just can't get enough of the broth!
4.5.08: I came here several times and I guess maybe its all the shouting and screaming is what makes me feel at home. Chinese people are known to sound like they're always screaming and well I agree. At this Japanese restaurant everything they do involves a phrase.
When you arrive they say welcome. When they sit you they say something but I'm not sure what it is. Ordering is the fun part. You can order different type of soup, softness of noodles and including how much oil you want in it. Is that service or what? Once your food arrives there's another phrase. I believe they say enjoy and when you leave its a good bye and thank you!
There's no place like home.

I realize that I just don't believe in going out to eat for Ramen. Nothing about this place was exceptionally good or bad, but after I'm done I just really can't believe that I just paid someone to boil some noodles for me. I guess we can all afford to be lazy sometimes, but if I'm going to be lazy, I'd rather go somewhere and pay someone to make something that I would never make for myself at home.
With that said, though, out of the few Ramen places I've been to, this one probably ranks up there are one of the better ones. As people have said though, don't expect to be able to enjoy a quiet conversation as the waiters are constantly yelling! It's alternately amusing and annoying.

pretty good ramen for LA standards. having had good ramen in japan makes me spoiled, but to get my ramen fix i go here cuz it's close and reminds me of japan. quality kinda went down since it opened but it's still decent. i go back when i can, but i can't stand the wait..

Whenever I have ramen I'm disappointed and wonder why the hell everyone likes this stuff.
Finally, I understand.
Other ramen I've had has been closer to the Chinese style soups with grease added to it. They haven't been pleasant or tasty. The broth here is fatty without being greasy! The texture is silky with a smooth taste to match! The best part is, it isn't overly salty like many ramen are, you can add more if you wish.
The noodles were just noodles. They were pre-made, but very good for pre-made noodles.
It kind of sucks that you have to put the stuff in that you want. I guess its a good idea so you can get a custom made bowl, but sometimes I don't want to think and just want it to come.
Also, make sure you get there as soon as they open for dinner. They open at 6, at 6:15 I got the last seat, which was next to a smelly guy at the counter.

Yum. It's a bit of a drive for me but I like that they seem to give you more chaysu than other Ramen places I've been to. I'm not a fan of the gyoza but others seem to love it. Good place for a quick lunch or dinner.
One of the better ramen joints in the area. The flavoring of the soup is just right (not too salty or too overpowering), and the texture of the noodles is perfect - not too stringy, not too mushy, not too hard. Of course, they let you customize it to your liking, which is great. I do wish they had more than one type of ramen, but I guess it's called Hakata ramen for a reason.
Their enthusiastic service is truly Japanese-style...you get this sort of service a lot in Japan...but the yelling starts to drive you crazy after awhile.

Ok, I am a ramen lover so this might be a bit bias if you aren't a ramen lover.
I love the ramen here though I've had better. I love how you can pay just a buck more for more noodles. The service is good and they greet you when you come in and leave. There is almost always a line and you can tell what type of ppl are there. Young asian teens to young adults. This place is not made for big groups bigger than 4 in my opinion as seating will be difficult.
I took my parents here once but them being asian didn't like it especially since its pricy for ramen. For me, its worth the money. I suggest you try it if you like ramen if you haven't already.
It took me a while finding this place but it was well worth the driving and the numerous illegal u-turns...
I love the the enthusiasm of all the workers there! They even drink with you and they have this whole kampai chant thing which I think is so awesome!
Anyway, lets talk about the ramen. I LOVE their ramen! I think they have the best hakata style soup at Shin Sen Gumi in LA. You can choose the firmness of your noodles, how much oil you want in your soup and add things in your ramen (for extra fee) like chasu, garlic, wonton, corn, menma, eggs, etc. I always get medium firmness, heavy on the oil, chasu x2 and menma! Rosemead is a bit far from where I live, but I would still go there when I am craving some good hakata ramen!

Pretty good, though I think I could make ramen with broth almost as good but sometimes I dont wanna bother. Also their noodles are excellent quality as well.
Best value: go for lunch but be prepared to wait on weekends. They have lunch specials which make it a pretty good value otherwise their ramen is kinda pricey but still very good.
Not much else needs to be said as there are plenty of detailed reviews.
I read the article a few months ago in the LA Times about Rameniac.com. He rated Shin Sen Gumi in his top 5 so my wife who loves ramen and I went. We were impressed with the gyoza-light wrapper and tasty and the ramen is excellent. I can do without all the yelling but it's part of the ambience there. I like the idea of extra noodles for 95 cents. What a deal. The chicken karaage is excellent as well.
This is much better place than Aji Sen in my 'hood. I still like Daikokuya in Little Tokyo. Their portions are more substantial.
WORST SERVICE IN THE WORLD! I'm a big lover of ramen and admit their Ramen is good. But their service is just horrendous. They yel at you all the time, boss you around, make you wait while there are empty seats. It's just annoying. I've gone many times just being I really felt like ramen, but the last few times, I left regretting it!
If you want ramen, I would go to DaiKoKu, in J town. it's really much better and the service is great. They're both busy places, so it's really not like one is better than the other.
But all in all, I have to say, it's a failure. I refuse to eat at a place where I'm bossed around and not appreciated for spending my money there.

This place has the best ramen in the area. The thing I like most about this place is that there are alot of options as to how your would like your ramen such as the firmness of your noodles, the spiciness, and what extras you would like to put in it. It's cheap also.
I discovered this secret little spot this week. When you step into the restaurant, you are greeted by the cooks, waiters, and waitresses simultaneously. Very welcoming. The ramen is great. But what was really great were the appetizers. They had eggs that rolled aka eggrolls AKA "cheesy" eggrolls...and they were DEE-licious. The cheese just melts in your mouth when you take a bite and the eggroll was so scrumptulously soft, it just melted away with each bite. I can almost taste it again as I write this review. And just because of the appetizers alone, this restaurant gets my official GOTTA TRY BE4 YOU DIE 5-star FDA approved Stamp of Approval.
