Would stay here again if I needed to be in Newberg. OK, truthfully, we wanted to stay in wine country and our first choice was McMinnville at McMenamins, but it was full. So for $80 a night, we found a place that was close enough to the Painted Lady (where we were eating dinner and topping off the Pinots we had been filling our bellies with all day long) that you could stumble back, though a boring walk.
But for $80 you get a big king sized bed, with a sink, mini-fridge, microwave, and free breakfast. Rooms were very clean. A bit dated, but not worn or very well maintained anyway. The bed was too soft, and the tv was tiny, but the wifi was free and flowing for us, and the breakfast included the normal "continental breakfast" stuff like orange juice, coffee, and fresh fruit as well as a make your own Belgian waffle station (fancy for this place!) so you could have a hot breakfast. We had no problem with parking or street noise, but we faced back away from the highway. And in addition to the free wifi, they had a computer with a printer attached which was also all free, or at least included with room charge, however you want to look at it.
The staff was not too talkative, friendly, or tourist helpful, but they weren't rude or anything either. There is really an opportunity for them to make some Marketing commission money if they cross sell some local tours or wine or something, but they are going to have to engage a little more to take advantage of that :-)
Anyway, bottom line is my opening line, if I needed to be in Newberg, I would stay here again for the value. And that is saying quite a lot really.

Being a part of a nationwide $25 million exercise would make you think that the participants would be staying at some nice digs. Unfortunately it seems that it was all spent before any got to me because I got to stay at the Shilo Inn during my weeklong stay in Portland.
Looking at the hotels nearby the Shilo Inn is one of the less expensive hotels in the area. The other dirt bag motel is the Inn at the Convention Center. But are sub $90 rooms which is a great deal considering that the hotels nearby run about $150-$300 a night so this is a deal if you're on a budget or for you Portland horn dogs... if you need it now.
But let me remind you that you get what you pay for. Here are some highlights and low points.
THE BAD:
-Parking lot is first come first serve. If they run out of spots you're out of luck.
- There's secret cameras in the parking lot http://www.yelp.com/bi... under the watchful eye of the owner. He's watching it because the motel lot is also a paid parking lot so that you might run out of your "complementary" parking space if there is overflow. The good news is if the shady dudes come into the lot you have a fighting chance of not finding used condoms in your car. (Well at least that's kind of good)
- The rooms smell. I got used to the damp smell after the second day.
-The motel is next to the busy street so if you're used to the "urban" life you're going to feel at home with the street noise.
-The rooms are small and the beds are terrible. http://www.yelp.com/bi...
THE GOOD:
-There is an air conditioner/heater. I tried both and it works! http://www.yelp.com/bi...
-The bathrooms are pretty big. They also have an ironing board and the iron works too!
-There's free wi-fi. In fact I noticed they had 3 wireless modems running so I never had a problem connecting to the Internet to yelp. Also for you other horn dogs this means that you can download your porn off the Internet rather than buying your $19.99 in-room adult movies like "Forrest Hump" and "Worst of Porn part IV".
Basically for the money the Shilo Inn is a decent spot. It is also 2 blocks from the metro-rail and 4 blocks from the Lloyd Center Mall. It is across the steel bridge from downtown Portland so you can't walk downtown but the Metro can bring you in if you don't want to deal with the cost.
I also have to thank the owners because though I had reservations for 7 nights they only charged me for 6 since I left early. That was really nice of them!
I'd give them a 3.5 stars and would give them another shot if I was on welfare (it might not be long folks!)
Basically it's better than the YMCA... without the village people!

Rooms are dated, but hey its clean, affordable, and close to all the wineries. Can't complain too much. The rooms were very spacious. Ours had a king size bed, a mini kitchen (microwave, fridge, and sink), and a large couch. Free wi-fi is an added bonus. We didn't have any problems with the parking either.

I stayed here for four days while visiting Portland for a wedding. The bride told us to stay by the Lloyd Center, so that and cheap were our room-priorities.
I booked through http://shiloinn.com and w/ AAA, paid $70/night for a room w/ a Queen size bed, mini-fridge, microwave, & free Wi-Fi. There was also an ironing board, iron, blow-dryer, A/C, etc.
I will also add that the door had a regular lock (well, keycard style, anyway), deadbolt, and chain-like thing. The room was quiet too, even though it was at a fairly busy intersection. So those are pluses.
The room was pretty no frills (no closet, no notepad/pen, no extra pillows or towels), but it was clean, inexpensive, and right by the Max.
There isn't much in the immediate area, unless you are actually there for the mall or convention center.
There is free parking at the hotel, but it's first-come, first-serve. Of the 3 days we had a car, only once was there no parking. As it was Saturday night and street parking was free, everything turned out, but I did see on a different evening a guest yelling at the attendant about the parking situation, so I'd imagine it could pose a problem. Unless you are driving out to the boonies for wedding events like I was, I don't really know why you'd need a car anyway...
In any case, the WiFi is free but the signal isn't super-strong. The room was always impeccably clean. The front desk attendants were pretty much indifferent to us, but were pleasant enough.
If I was visiting Portland and was again told to 'stay by the convention center,' I might stay here again. If I couldn't find anything similarly inexpensive in a more interesting neighborhood, I might stay here again. Am I dying to return to the Shilo Inn? No. But it was clean, the non-smoking rooms didn't smell like smoke, and the water pressure was good. What more do you really need?
