I wanted a place in Bend close to my sister's - and really the Red Lion is a better location - but they wanted $105 for a room right on the highway with next to 0 class. The Shilo Inn was a mere $78, and we even got upgraded to a room on the river. If I had requested a room on the river, I think that the price was about $95 - so still better than the Red Lion. We didn't eat at all while we were there... but checking in was a breeze, the room was great - big enough for the two of us, and the x-large dog crate for our puppy. The other great thing is that since we were on the river on the main floor, we had access to a sliding door with some grass so that our dog could go relieve himself as needed - which is quite often when you're just a young pup. So, this room and location couldn't have worked better for us.

The shower was fantastic... aside from the drain being in the middle of the tub (what the?) - it had great water pressure, and was nice and hot. The soap and shampoo/conditioner were good enough that I could actually comb my hair (that's always a challenge with some hotel shampoo/conditioners).

The room did look like the last time it was decorated was in the 70's sometime... but who the heck cares. Great view of the Deschutes, plenty big for two and a pup, a sliding glass door to the outdoors, a fantastic shower, and I didn't hear a soul the entire time we were there (within the walls, that is).

We did not eat... but I guess that it just doesn't make any sense to ME, anyway, to eat in a hotel. That's what restaurants are for.

Check-out was also a breeze, and overall I'm pretty happy - just wish that it would have cost just a touch less. I mean, come on... we're in Bend. What is there in Bend to justify anything close to $100 for a night's stay? Portland, OK - Bend, um... no.

We stayed here in June, 2006 - the first time we'd ever stayed at any Shilo Inn. We chose it because, with two young kids who sleep early, we need a suite. And also because it was the most expensive hotel we found in Bend, and we assumed that would afford us some luxury after a long drive from San Francisco.

Boy, were we mistaken! We'll never stay here again, nor will we ever stay at any Shilo Inn again. Here's why:

1) Our "suite" was actually only a single room, very much like other single rooms we could've reserved at another hotel for a much lower price. I went to the front desk to purchase an upgrade, but was told that the hotel doesn't actually have any suites. Isn't that false advertising?

2) We had extra visitors in our room -- gnats and spiders, even a dead spider on the ceiling that housekeeping had never removed. By the time these guests showed up, my wife and kids were all asleep so I decided not to bother asking for another room.

3) Worse than that, when my daughter woke up and pushed the covers off of her in the morning, we discovered a hard-shelled, beetle-like bug crawling in the bed!

I explained all this to the front desk person when checking out, but all she managed was a quick "I'm sorry" as she told me where I needed to sign for payment.

When we got back home, I emailed all these concerns to the hotel email address listed on Shilo's web site, and also sent a copy to the corporate email address, too. To this date, more than 2 weeks later, the hotel staff has not replied.

I did receive a letter by snail mail from the corporate office, with the following explanations:

1) Across the hotel industry, "suite" no longer means two rooms. The letter included a quote from Webster's dictionary for the word "suite."

2) Gnats, spiders, and bugs are "commonplace during the summer when the location is along a river."

Included with the letter was a voucher for a free night at any Shilo Inn. We won't be needing it.....

Hotels are NOT HOME!  So, get used to it.  Actually I've travelled quite a bit as a former "road warrior" consultant.  I've stay in high end superior hotels and 5-Star hotels, in mid-town Manhattan, Hawaii, Bahama's, Florida, Las Vegas, San Diego, San Francisco, etc.  That said, Shilo Inns and Suites is a decent hotel chain but not a 5-Star.  We stayed there for about 2 weeks awaiting our newly purchased home to be repaired back in 2002 and we had a room/suite right on the Deschutes River.  We had a very relaxing stay but it is a bit too pricey for a place to sleep.  We didn't eat at the restaurant.  Since 2002, Bend has produced several higher end hotels with updated accomodations and services.  Try AmeriTel Inn for starters!

I decided to stay in this hotel with my bofriend and we had reserved the "bath tub suite"
we went to the room and it was like every other room only $280.00......so i went to the front desk and they gave me a voucher for their bar and resteraunt and said they would fix it asap, meanwhile we should go sit in the resteraunt.
So we go over to the resteraunt, i ordered a ceaser salad (hold the anchoves)....what did i get? i big ol heap of anchovies, then i was told that was how i ordered it. I was also told that i was wrong and i was being rude. ISNT THE CUSTOMER ALWAYS RIGHT????? wierd
so anyways i go back to the front desk after these waitresses told me what a bitch i was for sending my salad back..(literally they called me a bitch)
and they said that they were not able to give me a refund but they could put me in a different room. It was a full bed and the tv didnt even work, i couldnt even get hot water in the shower. WHAT THE HELL...i thought they were supposed to be some upperclass hotel chain..yeah probably NOT
