Oh man, I bet everyone that works here really hates me and my husband. We came here for lunch toting some bigass shopping bags (e.g., down comforter), and then sat down and ordered two of the cheapest thing on the menu ($7 ramen with vegetable dumplings). I didn't know that we were going to get 6 little dishes of appetizers and a whole fried fish each.....it was weird, but fun. And the final reason why they hate us is because we sent the fried fish back, since we're vegetarians. The waiter seemed really offended....

What a great deal! I can't believe you can get a huge, delicious, sit-down lunch for $7 in a non-dive-y place.

Been here twice. The first time, I got the LA Kalbi. It was like $20...what? If you're in LA, you can get AYCE bbq for like $13 and you eat like you're prepping for a famine -__- but the amount of meat they give you at Shilla can barely get a child full...so I had to rely on their ban chan to satisfy myself... so why the 4 stars? because the ban chan is deeeeeelicious! and the employees are never reluctant to refill your plate :] I LOVE their pumpkin salad. Oh lord, I go crazy, getting 12350182730591873  helpings...

The 2nd time, I got some dumpling noodle soup kinda thing. Again, it was meh! But I went on Christmas with my roommate so Shilla will always have a special place in my heart... My first NY christmas spent in K-town (not China Town! ohhh i'm clever)

Only complaint is the price! But I've been spoiled with good, cheap korean food in LA. *scoff*

My girl friends and I LOOOVE korean bbq! We stumbled upon this place walking through K-town.  We could smell the meat and smoke from the entrance.  I was quite surprised the restaurant had 3 stories, and every floor was full with carnivorous diners.

SERVICE - 5 stars! At first we were seated at a tiny table next to the walkway.  I guess we looked uncomfortable because a few minutes later, the waitress asked us if we wanted to move to a larger table with an actual grill.  Awesome!  Also, while we were eating, the korean lady kept coming to our table to cook our meat.

    FOOD - 3 stars
    1. Side dishes: LOVE LOVE the side dishes, especially the fried fish.

    2. Combo beef tongue with brisket: The bbq sauce that they used to marinate the brisket was sooo flavorful!  I would take a jar home right now!  However the brisket was too fatty and chewy.  The beef tongue was interesting; it had a tough texture but mostly tasted like meat.

    3. Kimchi soup: I thought this was just okay.  It was barely spicy...  I've had better tofu soup at other korean places.

Might come back again to try the rest of the menu, even if it means smelling like a smoked oven for the next few days.

Service is excellent. Very attentive. Explained dishes. Offered suggestions when first choice was sold out.

The food is just ok. the seafood pancake was too heavy on the dough for my preference.

my tofu stew had a weird smell to it. i can't figure out what it was.

we did get a bonus pot of steamed eggs on the house.

I've become disappointed with Shilla in the recent years... Shilla has three floors although rarely is the second floor open.  The service is always great, but its honestly one of the more expensive restaurants in Ktown.

I used to think their BBQ was the best of all the places, but lately New Wonjo has impressed me more.  Shilla's BBQ has become slightly dry and not as flavorful, and their ban chan options are not as diverse as in the past.

The mandoo guk at Shilla will always have a place in my heart, but it is not enough to make me come back...

When would I recommend Shilla? for large groups where you want to take your time - they never rush you here and you can sit and chat for as long as you want.

3 stars for the Seafood Soon Do Bu and 4 stars for the Kimchi Jjigae.   The tofu soup isn't the best I've had, and the seafood one tastes a bit too much like the ocean for me.  The kimchi stew, however, was delcious!  Pretty large for the price - beef, cellophane noodles, and a few rice cakes in there!

NOW, I would have loved to have rounded up and given this place 4 stars, but it lost some credit after I came here twice in a row in 2 nights and had a stomach ache and resulting consequences after eating it.  I eat Korean plenty and have never had this kind of experience afterwards.  And my stomach can handle real spicy foods..... hmmm.

    3rd time's the charm?

To be honest I would give Shilla a 4 for food and 2.5/3 for service.

The food selections are pretty diverse and the table side cooking is always fun, but the service goes from feeling rushed to forgetting you exist.  Perhaps if I spoke Korean it would be easier to get the waitstaff's attention, but in the heart of Manhattan, even if it is K-Ville, should I have to?

You do get a varied assortment of kimchi and other pickled condiments, but we had to repeatedly ask for refills of the unlimited condiments. The staff came over and turned off our heating element before we were done cooking our pork belly and vegetables and then came over to ask if we like to cook more well done.

The prices are pretty average for Korean BBQ with each dish ranging from $20 - $30 per item with a two item minimum.

Similar to many restaurants on the slice of W. 32nd St. there are many Koreans patronizing this place, so that could be a nod to its authenticity. It could also be because the place is open 24/7 and therefore at any time you can grab some pretty tasty K-BBQ and/or bulgogi.

Pretty good food.  I would rate it 3.5, but giving it the four because of a great bi bim bap i had there.  Had it with some go chi chang, and it hit the spot.  The service was good when i went there, went with 7 other friends.

Food came pretty quick, and the price was reasonable.  I tried some of my friends' dishes, some were on par, some were amazing, some were so-so.

So some of the dishes were alright, could have been better, but the bi bim bap i had was really good.  Was in a black bowl that kept on cooking, and best to leave the sides burning a bit so you could eat some crispy rice at the end.

In a street full chock full of Korea restaurant I tend to stick with the ones I know. Once in a while we branch out to try a new place. Will it be a hit or a miss?

I found the food here to be pretty solid Korean fare, and service was attentive and friendly. As with most Korean restaurants the prices are on the higher end of some other places. But in the end it all comes out to about the same.  We decided to try some new dishes that looked interesting on the menu ... Hae Mool Jjim(spicy seafood w/ bean sprouts & scallions), Spicy Honguh Tang(spicy skate fish casserole w/ vegetables), Al Jjigae(hot & spicy fish roe casserole). We probably went a bit overboard on the casserole part but it was a cold day! Everything said spicy and looked intimidating but in reality it wasn't really that spicy unless all you ate was bland food...then yes it probably will be.  I always order the Al Jjigae if it is on the menu and here I was very good ... it had plenty of fish roe, tofu and mixed seafood. The skate casserole was equally as good with basically the same but with the fish instead.

Overall, we had a good experience here. Good service that didn't feel rushed like many other Korean establishments where it is like wham, bam thank you M'am and solid Korean food is a plus in my book. I can add this to the list of choices when we have a hankering for Korean food.

I entirely disagree with other Yelpers who laud this place for its service. I've been to plenty of restaurants with lousy service, but at least then I was prepared and didn't pay up the ass for it. Not so in this case.

It wasn't one thing they did that killed the mood for me, but rather a bunch of things that happened over the course of meal that led to believe that there was some shady discrimination (yes, it happens). My table (large, diverse, though non-Korean) had to ask repeatedly for extra banchan, which were charged extra without our knowledge. We had to ask for rice with our BBQ, again repeatedly, and only after did they bring us two bowls, which is a slap in the face considering other places will bring  a bowl per person without question. They didn't bring us spoons to eat the rice with either (equivalent to how waiters don't give chopsticks to Americans). I am certain that there was preferential treatment going on, as I noticed other Korean-speaking tables were definitely serviced better than ours. Adding insult to injury, they didn't turn on the vent, so smoke was fuming into our faces as we were eating.

Overall, service was deplorable. The food itself was admittedly good; portion-wise, it was kind of tight, and the waiters were definitely stingy and deceptive about the extra plates of kimchi. Really though? Stick to Kun Jip if you're looking for KBBQ in the area.. I will neither be returning to nor recommending this place to anyone in the future.

Do you ever notice that Korean chopsticks look like weapons--all metal & flat & pointy? They're difficult to pick up noodles or tofu or anything that I actually want to put in my mouth. Shilla doesn't have those chopsticks.

My favorite Korean spot in K-town, but probably bc I refuse to eat anywhere else. Their array of banchan is delicious.amazing.scrumptious. I have a hard time not filling up on it while I wait for my actual meal to come. The staff never seems to judge when I ask for 2nds of the ones I devoured.

I always get the sizzling rice & tofu. I've tried other things but they were non-memorable. It's 24hrs so its a great place to stop off @ whilst wandering the city if you're on that side of town. There's never really a wait. The bathroom is clean. The menu has pictures. I have no harsh words.

delicious Korean food + excellent service.

We started off with seafood scallion pancake. It was crispy and had tons of seafood. Next we had marinated beef, pork and shrimp. also very delicious. it had tons of flavor in every bite. Of course you cant have Korean food without the famous tofu soup. It was a tad spicy but nonetheless still warm and cozy, perfect for the cold weather.

the service provided was really good. there were some language barrier, ie I requested more appetizers as in the side dishes and they brought us more scallion pancake. but no worries, the food made everyone happy. also plus side, we left the restaurant without the Korean BBQ smell!

By far one of my favorite--- if not my favorite Korean restaurant in K-town.  I literally went 3-4 times last week.  The staff are always so sweet and kind.  I always order their Goong Joong Dduckboki (rice cakes) which was oh so good (but a tad bit spicy).  Their beef dumplings are especially delish, especially when dipped in the rice cake sauce.  I learned this trick from a friend of mine who is a K-town connoisseur.  The last time I was here the waitress saw me do this and was so surprised because apparently this is "how it's done."  Of course I gave her a "of course I know" look...pretending like I knew this all along even though I learned it within the past month or two.  Perception is reality boys and girls...

Some other dishes I enjoyed were their octopus dish (also spicy) and the Kal Bi Jjim (short ribs stew) this is amazing.  I swear it's been cooking for hours and just melts in your mouth.  It's extra amazing when eaten with rice.  I've tried the spicy Kal Bi Jjim, just as good and just as mouth watering.  I almost forgot, the BBQ is also spectacular.  I've tried the short ribs; but be informed, you have to order a minimum of two orders for BBQ so come with friends!

So if you're ever hungry (which always seems to be the case for me), anytime in the day or night, definitely try this place out.

Big menu of items and a big restaurant..shortens the wait and they don't rush you out quickly.  Had the bibimbap and thought it was pretty good, nothing special.  The seafood pancake was very good.  I like the little fried fish everyone gets.  The rest of the small side dishes were good too.

I'm surprised by all the good reviews about the BBQ here.  It's been years since I have been back to this place.  The food wasn't great back then either, but the lady kept giving us free soon tofu and the steamed eggs cause my friend kept making me say stuff in Korean.  The perks of being young and cute.  Too bad I can't remember those days any longer... :'(

Well anyways came here this past Friday for dinner since my friend had a Korean BBQ craving.  We ordered the beef brisket, beef tongue, samgyeopsal(pork belly), two different cute of kalbi, dukbokki, haemul pajeon(seafood pancake).

Beef tongue, beef brisket and pork belly weren't really BBQed, more like steamed...  That made me quite sad... :'(

Dukbokki was decent but kinda seemed like it was sitting for a little bit, and also it wasn't spicy.

    Seafood pancake was alright.

The banchan(side dishes) was lacking in variety.

The food could have been better if grilled differently.  The waitress was the worst korean bbqer in the WORLD.  You're supposed to cook then cut, NOT CUT THEN COOK.  I was deeply saddened by the nights events other than the fact that a pitcher is only $20.  But to top it off, the stake in the heart is that the nice ahjima that always gave me free food was nowhere to be found.  SADNESS.

The first time I went there it was a great experience. The food is good and reasonably priced, well portioned, and after 11pm they have great deals on beer and drinks. Everyone got to drink and eat and be merry. But the second time I went there the story was different. The food was fine, but the servings were small, and they made us buy more food to get the deals for alcohol even though my group had the same number of people. The fatal blow was when we found a cooked cockroach in the food! They said they still had to charge us for the food because the manager was out, crummy stuff. I'm giving it two stars because if you can find someone to buy an entre and risk the bug infestation, then it is a good place to get cheap sapporo after 11pm.

The food is outstanding. The interior could use some help though. Pretty bland layout, which I guess added to my surprise as to just how good the food is!
The banchan was noticeably well presented and the kimchi was tangy and tasty. Been to plenty of other spots in K-town,and they're mostly all good, but this one really stood out food-wise. Totally looking forward to going back!

Came here with a group of 4 for lunch. Service was spotty for lunch and it took us awhile before we were given water or had or orders taken. We had to flag someone down to fulfill those requests.  After those initial moments....the food and side dishes came out promptly. We ordered 2 bibimbops, 1 kalbi, and 1 bulgolgi. Food was delicious! Not the best ive ever had but still good nonetheless. I never feel that korean food is worth its high price tag....especially for lunch and this restaurant did not help me change my mind. Overall, decent food, mediocre service, but I'll try some other ktown spots before coming back.

we dont have decent korean food in miami and i went in search of korean grub in ny. walked into shilla cause did not want to walk anymore than 3 blocks. it was cold and rainy which totally blows. the hostess was very nice and smiley. but then the waiter came to our table and he just had this shitty attitude .. must be the weather, i dont know how happy i would be if i had to go to work when its cold and rainy and shitty but thats not my fault. the food was ok. i had a spicy soup and the broiled fish special. this place would have been 4 stars in my book if we would have gotten a more upbeat waiter... so mister waiter the annoyed. come to miami. bring your chancletas. spend a week under the sun. you might get rejuvenated and make better tips afterwards. fo reals.

I would've like to have tried the Korean BBQ, but in my lunch hour...there was just no time. So instead, I had a bim bi bob, which was rice, ground meat, veggies in a hot stone bowl...which is quite the awesome. it made my rice crunchy, which was fun and qutie delicious to eat. I could've used a bit more meat, but whatever. it was a good quick lunch at a decent price (under $10). i'd go back again.

The service here is great and the food is even better. Their kalbi is, in my opinion, the best in Ktown -- perfectly marinated and absolutely delicious. I haven't had many of their dishes beyond the standard three: bibimbap, kalbi, and bulgogi -- but they're all very good. Plus, this place is open 24 hours. Two thumbs up.

I was pleasantly surprised by the nengmyun here. It was really good. It was really good. Yes, that absolutely required mentioning twice.

They use dong chimi mool (radish kimchi water (?) - what, it makes sense..) in the dish, which just really made my day. It was a perfect balance of tangy and sweet with a crisp coolness that took the bite out of the hot summer day.

I haven't tried anything else, but would come back just for nengmyun.

They have large signs for nengmyun outside their restaurant... I won't say it's one of the WORST, but what restaurant doesn't put meat in their nengmyun?? I've never had it like this and when I asked if I could order meat on the side, the waitress said NO. I'm sure it might have had something to do with her not speaking English that well but I wasn't about to order a meat plate on the side for a large bowl of noodles.

    Whatever.

Their beef is soft, juicy, and fatty, just the way I like it. Their spicy pork is well seasoned (though can be spicier).  Kimchi pancake, win.  Kimchi Fried rice, Win Win.  And they have good variety of ban chans-triple win. (the accompanying side dishes, i love their kimchi).

Service is hit or miss but who cares? I'm not going to dock a point because of their service. You don't go to these restaurants for their service; you're going for their food. You're grilling your own meat (once in a while, they will help out).

I'm going to keep it short and sweet: This place is good for the BBQ meats.  The tofu soup and the bibimbap is OK ( I like BCD tofu house more for those).  For BBQ meats,  generous portions, decent price, and good decor/ambiance, Shilla is a good choice.  We had 10+ people, ate like a fat korean emperor (is there such thing?)  and paid about 40 bucks a person.  Granted, we had very hungry people who just ran a corporate run so your bill may cheaper.

Just went here today, and it was good, but not as good as Wonjo just down the street.
What people have said about the service is right - it isn't that great. Water took a while to come, the waiters took the things to flip the meat and vegetables with away each time, and as a result the food burned.
Also, while the meat was super tasty, the vegetables had a weird marinade that I didn't like (the others at the table didn't seem to mind though), and the kimchi appetizers weren't amazing.

The ambiance was just like any other Korean BBQ place, nothing fancy, but not bad either.

Still a good deal at $35 with tip (in a group of 7), but I'd recommend going to Wonjo instead - or another Korean BBQ place down the street.

People loving this place have obviously never had Korean BBQ from LA or Garden Grove.

I was very disappointed with Shilla.  Ate here on two occasions and spent way more money than I should have.

Had the bibimbap my first time here, and the server didn't understand anything I wanted.  She didn't seem to understand English.  I just wanted bibimbap with bulgogi and egg.  A rice bowl, or the equivalent of one, came out (and yes, it was the bibimbap).  I made a WTF face.

Second time, I ordered Korean BBQ.  Servers basically waited on me and tried to intervene every time I cooked a piece of meat.  The Korean BBQ experience should be that you do everything yourself and talk amongst your company.  I was getting my food cut like I was a 5-year-old and was watched the entire dinner.  Not cool.  And my Coke was always watered down, WTF!

Banchan was not memorable or tasty.  Never found myself requesting for more.  I really wanted to like this place and have a substitute KBBQ while away from home, but Shilla failed.

It's standard ktown BBQ, can't complain.   Conveniently located, overpriced, but average as far as Ktown prices go.  Comes w the side dishes +  korean ladies who flip your meat and cut it up and bring you even more side dishes. yay.  Both times I got the ssamgyupsal.  Love it.  They have decent everything here.

They don't really make you wait that long..I think the wait time was 20 min max even during during peak hours due to the pure hugeness of the place (3 floors)

I was surprised..TONS of Caucasians and otherwise non-Koreans eat at this place.  I can only conclude that they must speak decent enough English here to attempt to communicate, and also that non-koreans must feel relatively comfortable here.  That is saying a lot bc Koreans are realllllly good at making you feel like you should have been born Korean.  Like, I am Korean and only speak English and I TOTALLY feel like I need to go to most Korean restaurants w Korean speakers.

Do not wear anything that can't simply be machine washed.  You will reek of bbq guaranteed.

I ordered some soup dumpling here and my friend ordered the bimbimbap!!!

the bimbimbap is as good as other restaurant in koreatown!! Decided to give a 4 stars at first but the soup dumpling is just OK to me.. I kinda like it but nothing really surprise me.. Just a normal experience... maybe I am just not use to the korean dumplings??? which I assume is different than the Chinese Soup Dumpling..

The waitress is really nice to us and also another reason that I did not give a 4 stars is because my friend and I were at the corner and we have to basically "shout" to ask for more water or order... :( Other than that.. The food is good.. :) I like the idea that they gave us unlimited side dishes.. :) Nothing much to comment about it since we only ordered 2 portion.. I will return some time to update my reviews on their bbq!!! :)

Tried kalbi stew (on last page of the menu) for the first time.the meat was tender and yummy. The service was just okay though. Went with my korean friend who picked out the dish:)
Might go back again to try something different but make sure to go early cuz there was a line on a wed. night

Came back here a few weeks later with some friends and this place just keeps getting better.

Service is really good and they are really fast with bringing out the food. Although having Kbbq by plate is much more expensive, the service and having someone else cook my food makes it worth it. Our waitress was taking care of a number of tables, but never forgot us and kept our food cooked.

Everything was delicious, nothing over cooked and everything just tasted perfect. Only complaint is that I wasn't full, but it really isn't Shilla's fault. I really didn't feel like spending $200 for dinner and still have room for dessert.

I wanted to give this place a better review because I really liked the design of this place. However, nah.

My friends and I decided to go to this place on a Friday night because the wait was the shortest. After getting seated, we got our menus, but no water or tea? Okay, so we placed our order and asked for 3 cups of water. The Mexican waitor is pretty friendly and he knows Korean too.

Anyway, after 2 of our dishes arrived, still no water. So I asked again and finally we got our water.

Now on to the food. We ordered 2 bibimbaps, one was with raw meat, one seafood pancake, and one stir friend rice cake with bulgogi meat. I liked the raw meat bibimbap, but the other regular one didn't taste good, kind of flavorless. The seafood pancake was smaller compared to Wonjo down the block and the flavor was lacking so much. Plus it wasn't even fried correctly. Once you try picking up the pancake, the seafood and green onions will fall off. The rice cake was lacking in flavor too, but it was bigger than the one at Wonjo's. Oh and the side dishes were all boring and tasteless.

Sorry, but the lady who took our red pepper paste to give it to another table without asking or letting us know totally threw me off. How rude.

I liked this place quite a bit.  They start with the standard giant-pile-of-korean-stuff, and then we did a veggie dumpling starter.  I had the spicy cold noodles, which were really great (and apparently vegetarian).

    Highlight of the meal:

"Do you want your noodles cut?"
    "Sure"
[whips out giant pair of scissors]
    !!

This place is aiite. I mean it's not BADDD.. I was teetering between 3 or 4 stars.. but I can't give everything 4 stars ya know! But yea I really like this place too but it's not a place that I go often like KunJip. Why? I don't know.. I mean the interior is a lot nicer and bigger than KunJip but I always feel like this place is so pricey for not so good food. But last time I went, I got their kalbitang and it was SOOO FREAKING DELISH. I went there at dinner time so it was like $15 for a freaking kalbitang but I guess that's newyork for ya! They were so generous with their kalbi pieces and the taste of the gook was pretty on the spot. It was also super soft so the kalbi would literally slide off the bone. It was pretty LEGIT.

I mean I did come here a lot my first year but not so anymore... maybe I should start going back just to see what my confusion is about haha. But yea I remember their lunch combos are reallyyy good deals so if you want korean food in NY you just gotta go during lunch cuz it's good portions for good price! AND this place is one of the bigger restaurants in Ktown so you always get seated fairly fast which I love!
