Review from Donald H.
International District, Seattle, WA
I went here years ago and I remember I left really disappointed. The wait was long, the food was not very good and there were so little banchan, I felt cheated. I thought this wasn't really like any real Korean restaurant I've ever been to. I vowed to never come back. But then I heard there were under new ownership, and I wanted to try again.
This time, I was not disappointed. The Korean food tasted just like Korean food should. Its not the best (the ones in Tacoma are the best) but its an authentic choice. The food was excellent, in good portions, not that pricey, and the banchan? Plentiful, just like a Korean place should be!
I am genuinely confused by some of the comments about awful service because I have been here a number of times, and the ladies has always been really nice and polite to me. I leave full and content each time, which is all I can ask for -
Review from Matt R.
I'll be honest and just say that I don't know shit about Korean food.
This was literally the second time I've had it and I thought the food was OK.
We had the Mackerel in honey and chill sauce, the seafood and green onion pancake, the calamari, and some mung bean cakes. Calamari was the best thing we had, the pancake wasn't cooked enough and super greasy, the Mackerel seemed fresh and the sauce was good- and the mung bean cakes were just plain strange.
Service was a bit impersonal and we did have 3 different servers.
Like many others- we had a Groupon- so what would have been an otherwise expensive meal was pretty affordable.
We went on a Friday at 7 and didn't have a reservation- they sat us right away without any issues. They had parking available below the building.
Not sure if I'd come back- nothing was really exceptional- but no major complaints. -
Review from Edward N.
The seating arrangement oddly reminds me of Denny's or Shari's. Think booths, many booths, all in a line bordering the windows looking outward. Then imagine eating sushi or Korean food with that. It doesn't really work for me, but I'm just picky like that.
I only ate the sushi and I tried a variety of rolls, which were all on-par with places like Wasabi Bistro, or Umi Sake House. Take a look at the picture I posted! They craft your basic sushi rolls and also offer sashimi, which is nice. It all tasted good, I had no complaints. I do have to say that I have yet to try "great" sushi, like some you'd find in Vegas or LA. So, my opinion shouldn't be taken too seriously if you are a big sushi person.
I went during a Monday afternoon for lunch, and it was completely empty when I came inside! Could be that it was around 2pm and everyone was already back to work, or something else.. I'm not sure? A few more people trickled in while I was eating, of course.
The service was nice, nothing particularly wrong, although nothing standout either, but what do you expect, this isn't fine dining. They do take BizXchange if anyone is wondering and a sign on the window says no Groupon's on holidays. I'd eat here again.. I think. -

We have ordered food from Shilla on http://eat24.com so the food is delivered. We loved the mackerel, chicken Katsura, salmon, pots tickers, and banchan. Lunch portions are nice but a little pricey if you want sides. Only got fish and rice. Banchan and Kim Chee are extra. Delivery was fast and friendly. We ordered the same foods off of dinner menu, paid over double and still didn't get banchan. Just got rice and fish. Otherwise the food is yumderful!!

I wanted to like it again so I came back. They should really try to be like Kawon and specialize in Korean dishes only and try to do a great job at them. Seattle needs a good Korean BBQ that doesn't require us driving 20-30 north or south of the city.
The panchan this time around wasn't good. The bulgogi and kalbi didn't have good flavor. The soondooboo chigae was not good either.
I want to like you but can't right now!1 Previous Review: Show all »

This place is definitely going down hill. I've actually been here once before and from what I remember it was a good experience. Anyways, I came to lunch here with a few business associates and I was very disappointed. The service was absolutely horrible. We waited for about 15 minutes before I had to get up and waive down a busser to find us a server.
The disappointment didn't end here... I ordered the chicken tonkatsu lunch special. The dish was just mehhh nothing special. To top it off they forgot to put dressing on my salad?! I mean seriously, who forgets to put on the dressing!!! Needless to say I won't be coming back anytime soon. -

I have been going here for years and love this place. I now have a family who I have introduced to this restaurant.
I probably am bias and thus the 5 stars instead of 4 because I was introduced to Shilla as a young kid and have been going ever since.
I say 4 stars is really probably the rating now because the quality has gone down a bit over the years. Not in the food but equipment and facility. The BBQ burners that are built into your booth are rarely used as most don't work so they bring portable burners.
But still great Korean food (can't speak for the Japanese side of the menu since I always go Korean) -

Lots of reviews have covered what I would like to say about this place.
I've been here twice and don't think I want to go back here again. The food was just okay. We used Groupon Now deals both visits and it really is not a good deal because the portions are TINY. The kalbi and bulgolgi can barely feed two people and the kalbi dish is overpriced at $23 for the portion you get. Waitresses looked annoyed when asking for refills on side dishes. The second time we came here and ordered the soondubu and it tasted very bland.
I saw one of the waitresses being super rude to another couple when they were ready to order. She told them to wait (rude tone) becaue she had to seat some other customers. I wanted to go over there and yell at her for them.
They do have their own parking lot but it can get full quick because people not eating at the restaurant park there, anyway. -

No no no no no more. I think this place gets a lot of hits for their happy hour which I cannot attest to since I've never been. This review is on their Korean BBQ. I've been here three times and I can really see the down-turn this place is taking. I enjoyed it the first time when we came with a group of probably 6-7, we came back again for lunch with 3 people and it was still good, but this last time...
1. Unknowledgeable workers
2. Small portions
3. PORTABLE STOVE ON A PLASTIC TRAY WITH A GRIDDLE ON TOP?!
As you can see, the first 2 points didn't bother me much. But the third was absolutely ridiculous. When my bill comes out to be over $70... don't bring me out a camping stove! The grill never even got hot enough for us to hear that oh-so-awesome sizzle of Korean BBQ. It was the quietest, most boring Korean BBQ experience EVER. I can whip out my electric pancake griddle at home and get a better sear on my meat then I did there that day. What's honestly weird is that they have built in stoves on the tables themselves. Perhaps it is just sheer laziness.
I will not be back. It's a waste of money. -
Review from Etta T.
We attempted to use a Groupon Now deal for Shilla a few nights ago when we were out shopping and didn't feel like going home to cook. When we walked in the place reeked of burned oil. The smell was overwhelming but we were hungry and it was late so we sat down.
Once seated, we opened the filthy menu book to find some of the pages stuck together. We saw the waitress pass our table multiple times without so much as a glance in our direction.
Looking around I just didn't like the feel of the place... the decor and booth seats looked incredibly dated, dank and sorry. There was no sushi bar (for a place that advertises as a sushi restaurant I found this to be a little disturbing) and the staff all looked very unhappy... none of the other customers seemed to be enjoying themselves either.
After a while the smell got to be too much and we decided to leave. On our way out the door we overheard a group of diners complaining to the maitre'd about several issues they experienced including their fan for the table grill not working and the portions being much smaller than expected.
I felt a huge relief when we walked out - and thankfully Groupon did not charge us for the un-redeemed certificate. -

We came in for a late lunch/early dinner right at the beginning of happy hour. I was pretty disappointed with the kimchi assortment. They had some of the basics (cabbage, salted broccoli, taro) but lacked some other pretty common staples like bean sprouts and cucumber. My bi bim bop was decent, although nothing to write home about. I was also a little surprised, as the dolsot bi bim bop was several dollars more and the version I got turned out to be cold.
As it was happy hour, I was also excited to order some nigiri sushi as it was only $1-3. Which seems awesome. Until you realize that price is per piece. The maguro tuna I ordered did not taste particularly fresh either. We only ate here because it was right across the street from our hotel, which was incredibly convenient. If I weren't staying in the same place again, I probably wouldn't seek this place out. -

This isn't real Korean BBQ in the way I've experienced it elsewhere. The food here is tasteless and isn't very good at all. They don't even have actual bbq's setup, they just bring out a portable grill. Their service was bad as well, waitress only came to our table about twice. Oh, and they don't do refills on soda, which was a big turn off. Had we known then we wouldn't have bothered.
Concluding, avoid this place. Yes their Groupon & Living Social instant deal sounds so enticing but it's not worth it. Probably never coming back again. -

Yum. I love this place. Good service. Consistently good food. I do recommend this well-kept hide-away secret place.
Location:
Nicely located on it's own triangular shaped block near the Space Needle.
Parking:
They have their own basement parking garage. And there's often street parking available (I know right. Unique for downtown Seattle.)
Service:
We got seated right away. The service was quick and polite. (There weren't any hotties working there but the service and food make up for that.)
Atmosphere:
It's set up as a nice classy Korean BBQ joint, but I love the sushi there. And hey...this is Seattle..so dress is optional. My cousin and I wore jeans and we were fine.
Food Quality:
The sushi is most excellent. The choices on the menu are expansive from Korean to Japanese bento if you can't decide. My cousin got the bento box which was very beautifully presented and had a lot of variety. I had the sushi chef platter which was amazing.
Prices:
Bring that credit card or your boyfriend's.
Return?:
Most definitely. -

Bad Service: Although I am usually understanding when a place is busy, I do not accept bad attitude from waitresses - our waitress was very rude and did not make an effort to make us feel welcomed. She had a snappy attitude and she never smiled. On top of that, she also forgot our orders, after we reminded her 3 times. My friends and I were not even "difficult" customers, we just wanted our food.
Food - it was good Korean food, but with bad service, I will take my business somewhere else. -

Review from Nyssa D.
We had a Groupon Now! and decided to use it on a snowy Thursday afternoon. I don't know if it was the snow and related shenanigans affecting our experience or what, but I was way unimpressed with this place.
We were seated fairly promptly, but that's about the only prompt service we got. We had to wait what felt like forever (at LEAST fifteen minutes) to place our orders, and when we did the server snatched the menu from my hands like I had personally insulted her entire family. Very rude.
The food was so-so. My kappa maki was average and fell apart by the end of the meal; the other roll I got was tasty but so unmemorable I couldn't even tell you which roll it was. My companion says his Bento box was pretty average, with fairly small portions. I would note, however, that the house salad had radishes in it, which I liked. But otherwise, the food was overall not super great.
Also, when entering in the Groupon, the server very nearly stole my companion's phone; we had to actually ask for it back...
We ended up paying almost $30 for our meal (even after Groupon Now! savings), which didn't seem worth it. I'd skip this place; Seattle has much better sushi to offer elsewhere... -
Review from Kelly L.
We got a Living Social deal so decided to try it out.
It was two of us so we just ordered chicken and kalbi for the grill.
The portions were small - probably half of what you would normally get from Old Village for the same price. The chicken was a little dry and the slices were very thin. Don't think we will be going back since that's what we usually order at Korean BBQ restaurants.
Overall dining experience and service was decent. -
Review from Duane L.
The Korean food sucks. I'm sorry for the bluntness. But, that is the only way I can put it. The haemul pajun tasted like an egg disaster. The meats were dry. The service is typical for a Korean restaurant, in other words, terrible.
I can't say anything about the Japanese food, as I didn't try it. But based on the Korean food, I'm not going to give it a shot unless I'm starving and it's free.
The only redeeming character is that it's in the Seattle metro area. But, I'd rather drive far north or south to get much better food anyways.
Bleh. -

Okay - i (begrudgingly) went back because my boyfriend had a Living Social coupon too. Maybe we just had the worst server ever last time... I was pleasantly surprised with the Korean ajuma who waited on us this time. She was very nice and attentive. We had nigiri and 2 sushi rolls - the sushi was decent, and the sake was nice and hot. I still won't be paying full price for the place, but i didn't leave feeling ripped off this time.

On a Thursday night, I brought my significant other here after a piano concerto show from the Seattle Symphony. Judging from the outside, the restaurant looks nice, and the menu has a large collection of food that you wouldn't normally expect from a Korean restaurant. It seems all exciting by far, yet it took them 10 minutes to realize that we were actually ready to order, when there was absolutely no one but us in the restaurant and somehow the waitress was busy doing her own thing god knows what.
We ordered the shilla roll, the spider roll, the sea food pancake and the kimchi fried rice. Along with the side dishes, the food do not in anyway deserve the price in terms of quality and quantity. Simply put, the ingredients weren't flash and the food temperature weren't high enough.
In short, this restaurant is merely acceptable, there are plenty of places out there serving quality Korean food in a much lower price range. -

What a sorry excuse for a restaurant. My family and I were so excited to try this place after purchasing a groupon. The majority of our diet consists of sushi and korean. We drove half an hour from Lynnwood, and got there at around 9pm. The first thing we were told was that they would only to-go food now, when we specifically checked the closing time which was at 9:30. Pretty taken back already at the fact that they wouldn't seat us half an hour before closing, we presented our groupon to use towards the food, and were told they would not accept it for to-go. So first of all if a restaurant has a waitress so lazy they don't want to serve customers before the place closes is completely unprofessional. The fact that they won't take their OWN coupon because of whatever reasons they like is just ridiculous. I wouldn't even go back to taste their food because I'm sure their kitchen reflects service at the front door.

This is my first Korean restaurant I have ever been to so I don't have anything to compare it with. However, I left saying "I think I like Korean food" We ordered so many sides and two combos for three people. Its like everything I tried was supper good or supper bad, nothing in between.
Over all, it was a good experience. The location was good and with plenty of parking. Its clean and nice inside. Good for groups. service was just blah -

My son requested this place for his birthday! They were so accommodating and patient with our children. At one point the owner came over to give my kids a lesson on how to use chop sticks, and even gave them a few extra's to take home and practice. Having both Japanese, and Korean food, gave my family so many options to chose from. Kimchi was really really good, and we were a huge fan of their teriyaki, we did not get the best directions on how to work the Korean BBQ, and so we burned our first part, but we figured it out. The server was so nice, and friendly, my kids found her before we left to tell her thank you, and she hugged each of them good bye.
We had a wonderful evening.
The only downside, was that they were pretty expensive.
We will come back for sure... someday... -
Review from Dennis D.
Alright sushi, and alright gyoza... but it's deep fried instead of pan-seared. :-/
Their teriyaki is pretty good though. I can recommend that.
I really do have to return to try their Korean BBQ. But I feel I should have at least three other people to make it worth their time.
It always looks fun and TASTY!

Review from Han O.
It's a good thing my guests were having Korean food for the first time or else I would have been very very very embarrassed. Best part of the dinner? Ogling the barely clothed women in the Bikram Yoga studio across the way.
I kept it simple with kalbi and seafood pancake. The pancake was NOT good. Too much egg in the batter so the guests thought it was quiche, which it might as well have been. There was a dearth of seafood. LOTS of onion and green onion to fill in the gaps and just a lot of eggy batter that didn't have any seasoning to it. Straight up flour, egg, and water? Even the accompanying seasoned soy sauce was lacking.
As someone previously said, the tabletop grill we were seated at was not working. (This is a possibly a theme since the bathroom had a neat automatic seat cover rotater that was out of covers) We opted to have them cook and bring out the meat. Herms....the marinade was shameful to a Korean restaurant. There was no depth to the meat. I was very disappointed. The most flavorful component of the dinner was the daenjang sauce that you eat with the meat.
The banchan were fine. Nothing amazing. Many were given a brief tasting and left untouched. There was not ONE empty banchan dish by the time we left, which is a huge indicator. Bland, bland, bland.
It gets worse every time I go. This time was prompted by a Groupon but I will probably pass it up if I see it again. Aurora and Factoria, here I come! -

Bought a Groupon for Shilla and decided to give it a try with a few friends. It was fairly nice inside, but the restaurant was dead when we entered, and not a single customer came in the restaurant during hour of dining (know we know why).
Our server's English wasn't very good...had to point on the menu when ordering. Even with pointing, she still got my order wrong. The food wasn't bad (the crab in the california maki was very dry...my salmon sashimi was delicious...) but my main complaint was that everybody's food came at different times. Now, I understand that this place may serve family style on the table, but there is no reason why my boyfriend's food should have came 10 minutes after everything else.
After receiving the bill, all four of us tried to figure out how they got to the total after using the Groupon, to no avail. We figured there was no point in trying to explain it to our server, so we just paid and left.
Wont be going back. There are too many great restaurants in Seattle for me to go to, and Shilla is not one of them. -
Review from Joseph M.
Had a groupon to this place so I decided to try it out since me and my gf are korean. I would say this place wasn't all that great. They weren't horrible but not good either, if that makes sense.
We ordered BBQ and some soup. We got pork belly which is generally really thick and boneless in all of the other korean BBQs we have been to. Shilla gave us super thin slices with little pieces of bone in them. We buy this at the korean store for home grilling and buy a big package for $5. This is the lower quality than restaurant quality and this is what we got at shilla for $18 -
Review from clint w.
Remodeled. No more bar at the back. New upholstery. Unfortunately, the grill at the table didn't work and the staff came with a portable version.
But to be honest, I thought the food wasn't as good as before. I used a cert so I shouldn't complain too much.
I thought the marinades were off a bit and the serving size was smaller than before. The service was good but our kalbi and bulgogi weren't quite as tasty. Dinner still comes with a good variety of panchan, but it will be awhile before I'm back.
It does have underground parking and street parking is usually easy to be had.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Let it be known that I've never before given a restaurant 2 stars. I can generally find something to appreciate in any establishment but not so much in this one. Vastly mediocre food for inappropriately high prices and unfriendly staff. Not even worth trying, don't be seduced by the groupon.

Review from Will L.
It has a big dining room and it's not anything especially fancy, but it works for me. This was near my hotel at Hyatt Place in the Belltown area, and I was missing a little Korean comfort food. So I went over there late night and ordered my favorite -- doen jang jjigae (Korean bean paste soup).
The order came out piping hot, with the steaming pungent (and wonderful!) odor of doen jang, along with potatoes, onions, tofu, and squash. This was an incredibly welcomed collaboration of flavors because it was a chilly upper 40s outside and this order brought forth cozy thoughts.
The ban chan lineup was solid too - cucumber kimchi, cabbage kimchi, mook (a gelatin in soy sauce), sprouts, some sort of Asian potato salad and fish cake. They also serve you tea (cha) in a pint glass, which was funny, but kind of cool as it takes a while to drink the tea.
If you told me $11 would buy me a little comfort of food from the motherland, I would tell you that is a major bargain. -

STAY AWAY!! They offer variety of stuff and they suck at them all. Food is blah and service is just absolutely horrible. Took them 40min to bring shabu? I mean common. It's just slicing the meet. That's all to getting a shabu ready. Avoid this place!!!

Review from Angela C.
I came here last night for dinner for two reasons - I had a Groupon and I was eager to try this place again, since it has been years since I last ate here. We ordered my usual Korean staples (because I like them and for basis of comparasion) - the Bulgokgi and Kalbee short ribs. We also got this spicy soybean soup to share.
The best part of the meal was probably the soup and the bahn chans. I really liked their Kimchi, cold mashed potatos, bean sprouts, and the marinated bean curds. The bahn chans were probably one of the better bahn chans that I've had in a restaurant. The soup was filled with stuff - seafood, meats, veggies, and had a really nice kick to it, without letting the spiciness overpower the flavor of the soup. The BBQ meats however, were disappointing. The flavor could have been there, but the problem was the fact that the meats weren't marinated long enough. So when we grilled the meats, some of the pieces just didn't have enough flavor to them to the point where the meats may as well been unseasoned.
It's too bad considering the location is conveniently close to me and they have free parking underneath the restaurant, which is practically unheard of in Seattle. If I didn't have another Groupon here, I likely wouldn't come back. Next time I come, I will try the sushi. And maybe the grilled pork belly. -

They have new menus that offer more Japanese dishes now. I took my parents here for Korean BBQ before, and we thought it was good. So we came back again, but we just ordered food without doing the BBQ.
We started off with California roll, it was decent and nice portion. Then we had chapchae, which is stir fry potato noodles with beef and vegetables. My family always loves this noodle dish because of the noodle texture and flavor, but Shilla's chapchae was a bit too chewy and greasy to us. We were then served with bulgogi, marinated beef served on a hot sizzling plate. When it came out, there was no sizzling at all but dry looking beef, and it was pretty flavorless. We also had seafood tofu stew, also it was not boiling in the pot like in many other Korean restaurants. The last two dishes were pretty disappointing especially when they did not present as hot dishes.
The only thing we liked about the place was the side dishes. They actually taste better than the food we ordered. However, the service was friendly, but they really need to upgrade the quality of the food especially when they are in such nice location. -
Review from Alix H.
I went here for a business lunch and was surprised with both Korean and Japanese dishes to choose from (I originally thought it was only Korean). I had the Korean tofu soup which was not bad (not the best I've had) and it came with banchan (side pickled dishes). Each table is equipped for Korean BBQ so I think I will have to go back there and try it sometimes. Friendly service, moderately clean. I would go back there again and try other items they have to offer.

Came here for some good Korean BBQ cooked at the grill. On first sight, the prices are alright, not too expensive. But when we got out meat the portions were so small and the meat was cut super thin! I could have probably eaten both of the plates myself (but there was 5 of us so I needed to share, HAH) They only provided us with 4 bowls of rice even though there was 5 of us so we paid extra for one more small bowl of rice -___-
We also ordered some california and spicy tuna rolls, the quality is like Genki but with the price of Miyabi.
The waitresses were pretty nice though so I appreciated that. -

I'm a fan except for the service on busy nights.
The food is overall very good (sundooboo jiggae / kimchi jiggae). I would never order Korean BBQ here. It's just waaaay to expensive. You need to go to Federal Way, Tacoma, or Lynnwood for Korean BBQ. Their panchung is pretty good. It's actually always really good and just spot on for freshness. We generally have pretty good service except this last time where the waitress was extremely slow and inattentive. Sure, it was busy, but no excuse.
Food: 4
Atmosphere: 3
Service: 4 (but the last time was 2)
Quantity: 3.5 -

Nice to know there's a Korean joint nearby if I get hankering for kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew) or dubu kimchi (stir fried kimchi and pork along with firm tofu). I'd like to give some of their soups and other stews a try. I had the soondubu jjigae (soft tofu stew); it was okay, but definitely not the best. The kimchi jjigae was quite good though although it could've used a bit riper kimchi. The banchan (side dishes) were great; potato salad for the win!
We got the bulgogi, which was alright but not great. I'm going to steer away from the Korean BBQ here as it's pricy and there are better choices up north or in Federal Way. But this will definitely be a place I'll go to when I need a quick Korean food fix! -

Poor form!
I want to write a good review and support a small business but the service we received tonight was pretty awful. I've eaten here a few times before (with regulars) and the service and food were ok. Having bought an Amazon Local voucher last week ($20 for $50) I arrived for dinner tonight with my partner and, knowing we didn't have a printed copy of the "coupon" - asked the manager upon arrival if he needed a printed copy or if he would accept the code i received in my e-mail.... assured the code was all they needed, we were brought to a table and given menus.... and.... time passed.... over 20 minutes later the manager noticed we we were still waiting for service and.... returned a few minutes later with our "waitress" who immediately proclaimed that they would only honor a printed copy of our voucher! I am serious.
Slightly disgusted and still hungry - we left the restaurant and went to Umi which was, as always, amazing.
On a side note: If you come here.... come with regulars + ask about MSG in the food if you have allergies.... I learned the hard way :/
