There are 25 other Sushi restaurants closer to my place and I continue to skip all of them and head back to SHIKI.

Fast, friendly and 1st rate service are just a few things to start with. The Sushi sends a rush to all of your senses starting with your eyes. Beautifully prepared whether it's a Volcano, Scallop Crunch or your classic California roll. Behind the Sushi bar are some of the best Sushi Chefs around. John, Sean, Eric and the boys are at the top of their game!.

I recommend getting the salmon chunk roll, salmon special, and their yellowtail special. The serving on the salmon chunk roll is massive so be prepared to share. The salmon special has the salmon meat seared and paired with a little dab of lime paste. The yellowtail special is the star of the menu in my opinion and is the best dish here. It's a yellowtail is served with a Japanese minty leaf which I dont recall with a little bit of lime paste. It's a must try dish.

On the weekends I strongly suggest you try out the "LIVE SHRIMP'! (ask for the female shrimp) Great menu options and benevolent service will keep you coming back for a long time, just like me!

This place used to be awesome under the previous management. But not so hot nowadays.

I feel that the portions are smaller and the menu definitely went up in price. I really enjoy the chunk roll and the sauce it comes with. I don't think that's really changed, but they are skimpy with the sauce. I used to recommend this place to everyone and now, it doesn't get the same praise.

    Sorry Shiki.

I've been going to Shiki for 8 or 9 years. The food was Great!.... Until the new owners took the place over toward the end of 2011.
Yes, now it has new paint and TV's everywhere. Like we need more TV's where ever we go. Can't live without a TV in your face 24/7?

The quality and quantity just isn't there anymore. Very disappointed.

The "Chunk Rolls" used to be fantastic. Then they "cheaped out" and started to use  imitation crab inside instead of fish.
I'm told, to many customer complaints led to a slight fix with a price increase.

My new Sushi place is Cho Cho San in Encino. The last time I went there it was standing room only. I was hungry and didnt want to wait. I gave Shiki another try.

My opinion. It's ok, not great.
I'll check it out again to see if there have been improvements.
Sometimes change - isn't always good.

    **** UPDATE ****

It's been about 6 weeks since my last visit and decided to give it another try.

My conclusion is that it will be along time before I will return to Shiki.
    To sum things up.
As the Quality has dropped (again) the Prices have gone UP (again).
But Hey, Now they have pretty new menus with lots of pictures!

The "Rainbow Roll" was the worst that I've ever had.
It was more like a "Rainbow Onion Roll".

    Fairwell my old friend Shiki.
It was good while it lasted.

Cho Cho San - here I come!!

It's amazing how the new owner of this place managed to take from good to bad in a matter of less than two months.

We've been going to Shiki for about 6-7 years at least once a week. The place used to be good. It was never the best sushi restaurant in town but it was decent with OK prices and big portions. Their outdoor patio made a very nice place to have dinner with friends.

Ever since the new owners took over the place has been going steadily downhill. Prices went up, and I mean really UP, portions became smaller, quality of fish decreased.

Our last attempt was last night and they managed to outdid themselves. Imagine getting a sushi not with one large piece of fish, but with 2-3 small trims.

With so many sushi restaurants withing a mile radius I don't think we are coming back.

Awesome lunch special. For 14 bucks there's a roll, a choice of a few pieces of sushi, a salad, and miso soup. Somewhat slow service but the food makes up for it. Plus you get a free appetizer when you check in. Whoo!

Sushi. One of the only foods that I refused to eat...that is until I came here. My sister convinced me to come here and try the rolls and I have been hooked on the stuff ever since. The best part is that you definitely get your money's worth: the portions are huge AND they have a lot of variety BUT you can eat a solid meal for under $20! The vibe the owners created is very conducive to a group dinner or even a date. Also,  the service here is really good and you have the option to try some imported Japanese beer here if you are of age.

So disappointed now that Shiki has been purchased by a chain.  Their fish, which used to be quite good, is now average, at best.  All but one of the sushi chefs have left.  Shiki has put up new TV sets, updated their bar with fancy chairs and such... but the food.... ugh.

We used to be regulars, going at least a few times a month.  The last time we visited, I felt ill afterwards.

I'm sad to say that after 7 loyal years, Shiki has lost our business.

IT USED TO BE GOOD, NOW LOUSY.
I was told that the owner sold Shiki to some chain restaurantuer, and the portion became stingy , after i complained, they charge me DOUBLE the price for the same scallop hand roll I had before, without my consent, argument to no avail; the service went down hill; the management was rude and refused to make it right.
Big rip off, I am going to stop going there.

    What a shame.
I have been going to Shiki for years...and through two different owners. Went last night hoping for more of the great sushi and food I always get...but something seemed odd from the second I went in. New people? New menu? Whats going on here? Needless to say the place has been taken over by some corporate chain owner who changed the food and raised the prices. Shiki has always been one of those hideaway great places where you consistently get good food and a lot of it. Game Over. Food was awful, all my favorites are gone, friendly service was gone, and as I noticed customers were also gone. Kind of feel like I lost a good friend, quite sad. I will not return.

Im note sure what do I give one star too. I would prob give zero if I had choice.

After reading some of the good reviews I decided to try this place. Considering that I am a big Sushi fan and have gone many sushi bars this place was the worst place ever ever. First the place smells badly, service is horrible, slow and careless. Taste of sushi horrible , kind of old taste. Green Tea served with Tea Bag, are you kidding me! I have never had Green Tea served in a Tea Bag , what a cheap rest to do that. Never will go to this place again.

This place is fantastic. The Assi Roll is my favorite - part of a wonderful lunch deal.  All of the "chunk rolls" are fresh and piled high. I wrote them up as one of LA's best at http://www.winefoodjav... - reasonable corkage fee too.

Shiki is one of my favorite sushi restaurants. Everything from their complimentary miso soup and bean sprouts to their specialty rolls, their food is exquisite and of good quality fish.

When I go, I always sit at the sushi bar where John usually works. He always serves the freshest cut of the fish and the orders usually come out fast for those that want a quicker service.

I recommend getting the salmon chunk roll, salmon special, and their yellowtail special. The serving on the salmon chunk roll is massive so be prepared to share. As for the other rolls, I'm not a big fan of their fusion rolls, and if you're looking for rolls instead of good, fresh, sushi, I suggest going elsewhere. But for those die hard fanatics of good fresh sushi, shiki is a must go to place!

I've tried MANY sushi restaurants, but this is the only one I walk into so far where the head sushi chef, Paul (a very American name for someone who didn't who had such a strong accent), looks up when I walked in and yells, "Oh look! It's Wolverine."

No joke, ever since then, every time I go in, despite my haircut, he still calls me Wolverine!

Their sushi is amazing, especially the spicy tuna and the Red Dragon Rolls, and the prices are great. Best deals on Sashimi I've seen so far! Plus, it's great to always walk into a place and be known as the guy that looks like Hugh Jackman!

This is a great spot if you're looking to go on a first date. Intimate and the outdoor seating allows you plenty of room to get to know your date with out freezing your butt off!

I go back though for the sushi. Cause in the end, it's ALL about the sushi, isn't it?!?

We went on a Thursday night. When we arrived around 7pm, it was nearly empty, but by the time we left at 930pm, it was totally packed! I love that there's a ton of parking and that it's set off the street... so even though half the city is eating there, it feels a little like a hidden gem.

It's not very clear if you should wait for a hostess or seat yourself, but the chefs told us to sit anywhere after they noticed us idling between the indoor and outdoor sections.

I ordered a green tea and was happy to find that they brought water with a tea bag -- the first time I have ever gotten this in a sushi place (usually, they bring it brewed, right?). Then we waited a while to have our order taken.

We ordered a couple of rolls and several pieces... then sat around waiting for a very long time. Like, long enough that the waitress came over to see what was happening at our table and to apologize. She finally brought our first plate, then realized it was another table's sashimi... so we waited some more. Seriously, the table next to us, who had shown up 20 minutes after us, had finished three courses before we received anything. The waitress came over and let us know our ticket had been lost at the sushi bar, so they had to resubmit it and would have our food to us in "four minutes."

About ten minutes later, we received our first plate, sashimi, along with an apology. Then we waited some more...

We each were trying to save a piece of fatty tuna for the end of the meal, but we got so hungry waiting that we ended up finishing the sashimi while we waited. The pieces were delicious, and we were still optimistic about the rest of the meal.

We waited and waited, and finally a California roll came out. Then we waited some more.

Finally, the rest of our food came at the same time, which felt weird... like, at first it seemed they were putting time between courses, then there was a load of a few things dumped on our table with an exclamation point.

With every delivery and check-in, though, the wait staff was apologetic and sweet... but I noticed that the manager specifically avoided coming to our table. He must enjoy visiting the tables where everyone is satisfied more than dealing with issues, because it was obvious that he understood there was a problem with ours but avoided even making eye contact so we couldn't wave him over.

The food was outstanding on the night we visited, and I let the waitresses know that their service and the quality of the food helped ease the annoyance of being seemingly forgotten about. I like to linger over a meal, but there is a tipping point where slow service becomes a distraction rather than a luxury.

Shiki is not inexpensive, which made the idea of being forgotten a little more annoying than if we were at a cheap place, but I left with the feeling that our service was a fluke of a lost ticket and the first impression could be re-evaluated on our next visit.

New management? Nooooo!!! My go to sushi spot is no more...The food is not the same, the prices have been raised, the portions have been reduced, all the good sushi chefs are gone, soda now comes in cans!!...I have been coming here for about 2 years now and I was at the point were I knew all the chefs, waiters, and the owners son, it makes no difference to me that they sold the place but the important part (the food) completely sucks now...

    RIP Shiki Sushi..

I live in Sherman Oaks and although there is an abundance of great sushi spots in the valley, my boyfriend and I keep hunting for that one great place. I'm personally kind of a sushi snob... my ideal sushi spot is in Little Tokyo, authentic, small, ample fresh sashimi and sushi.

We decided to try out Shiki after reading so many good reviews on Yelp. It is a large place so I was questioning it immediately as we walked in. We managed to find a quiet table in the back and were immediately served yummy complimentary miso and bean sprout salads. The first part of our order came really fast! The waitress was incredibly attentive and welcoming. We even got a complimentary lobster dish for it being our first "experience" at Shiki.

I paid attention to the reviews warning about the large portions. They weren't kidding!! The fish on top of the sushi flowed onto the plate. The price of the sashimi threw me off until we received the plate. Beautiful, fresh, melt in your mouth, gigantic pieces (more than a usual sashimi plate) of salmon. There were so many amazing looking dishes coming off the bar we are DEFINITELY going back to try out some actual dishes. I tend to stick to sashimi and sushi, no rolls but I wouldn't hesitate to order some at Shiki.

We of course over-ordered as usual even after we knew how big the portions were but managed to eat every morsel, it was that good! We've been to many other places in the Valley, Bizen, Katsu-ya, Little Island, Iwata, Izakawa M, etc. and the bill has been high even with happy hour prices. Our bill at Shiki after TONS of sushi, 3 large sakis, a glass of wine and 2 large Saporros was about the same as a sub-par spot wherein you'd leave still feeling hungry.

This is our new favorite spot. Great service, great sushi... also seems ideal for large parties, great outdoor patio as well. If you want to keep it date-style romantic there are small dimly lit tables in the back by the bathroom (sounds gross but the bathrooms are actually way down a hallway so it's not bothersome).

    Enjoy!

Zero stars would be a better fit.

Walked in here at about 9:00 PM on 8/6/11. We were served complimentary miso soup and bean sprouts. Very nice!

Ten minutes go by and a waiter has not appeared to take our drink orders.

We decide that maybe we should sit on the opposite side of the table so that we could face the chefs and waiters.

Another 10 minutes of staring and trying to get their attention.

Five minutes later we decided to leave and never come back. Not so great!

Upon exiting, the Missus explained to the host that nobody bothered to even acknowledge us (not counting the excellent bussers). Sadly, he really didn't care and offered to do nothing about the situation - not even tell the other people working there that 2 customers are leaving.

We arrived with empty stomachs excited about trying a new sushi place with 4 stars and over 200 reviews on Yelp and left with a bad taste in our mouths. This should not even be considered Japanese as they did not show any respect to their patrons. The Japanese would surely be insulted by such a mockery.

Just goes to show you that Angelenos are easily amused and there are a lot of sheep out there  on Yelp.

Will never try again and will steer as many people away from this establishment as possible.

    Cheers!

I used to come here with the hubbs all the time, used to leave with a nice low $25 bill, but last time we went we it ran us about $60 =(
It was one of my favorite joints bec it was good sushi for a moderate price, thats just too bad.

For what its worth, get the Spicy Albacore Chunk Roll or the Alex Roll. Both are excellent!

Shiki used to be much better.  It seems like it has changed ownership in the last month or two.  I haven't noticed  a drop in quality of food but the portions have gotten smaller and the prices have gone up.  To be fair, I think the lunch special portions are still enough to satisfy a big eater like me.  My main issue is with the iced-tea.  They switched to a basic lipton type brand.  It used to be much more flavorful. Oh, one more thing... the music.  They used to play nice, relaxing international music that got your mind off the daily routine.  Now, it's the same hip-hop carp I hear everywhere else.

This place is my go to place, when I'm looking for affordable sushi. If I was going to rate this place on the price of the food, I would give it a solid 5 stars. The spicy tuna chunk roll is about 10 dollars and is enough to fill you up with one order!!  However the sushi is not the greatest and the freshness is hit or miss. Some of the sushi chefs are not nice as well. Recommended for a quick inexpensive meal.

We went to Shiki yesterday (Thanksgiving Sunday) and were quite disappointed.  We used to drive over the hill to enjoy this great place with nice portions and prices.  This time, we happen to be in the neighborhood, so we went.

The place wasn't busy at all and the waitress wrote the order down herself on the sushi sheet.  The baked salmon and tempura (cooked items) came out first, but the tempura was cold.  1 of the California rolls was wrong and had to go back.  Then, the 2 simple rolls which 2 of us ordered as entrees never came.  I got up from the table and requested them, finally received them with the excuse that the sushi chefs changed (SO?  What does that have to do with completing our order?) and again one of them was wrong.  The waitress did not seem to care really.

I had checked in on yelp, so our edamame ($4.95) was complimentary and the manager took the 2 rolls off the check because I told her what happened.

I don't like writing bad reviews, especially when I've eaten a delicious meal, but I was raised in the restaurant industry and I really have a problem when I'm ignored by the wait staff in a very nice restaurant where I'm spending good money.

    Here's the breakdown:
I went to Shiki on a Friday night with two of my girlfriends.
There was no wait for our table.
The food (that was delivered to us) was delicious and our water glasses were consistently filled (the bus boy was on it).
Our waiter practically ignored us all night - we had to yell across the restaurant every time to get him to come to our table because he didn't acknowledge us when he walked past (which wasn't often).
We waited awhile for him to take our order, no problem.
He talked us into the sashimi plate along with our three rolls, said we'd love it. The sashimi never came.
We asked for extra wasabi and ginger.
Our rolls came out far apart from each other, with no wasabi or ginger.
We asked for some and were brought a portion for one person.
Not one person stopped by our table to ask how we were doing.

All in all, it was a decent experience, with a different waiter it would have been quite pleasant. I know for a fact that there are hundreds of fabulous out of work waiters in LA, it would be great if a place that charges you $20 for a roll would keep a full staff of them.

Good thing there are a ton of great sushi spots in the valley; I will not return to this one.

    Shiki oh Shiki!

I made a mistake, my first time going to shiki I ordered edamame to begin with since most sushi places don't fill me up.I have never made that mistake again. The amount of food they give you here is outrageous (in a good way)!

Their Rolls Royce roll is piled so high it is almost falling off the plate. I always promise myself that I won't finish it...but how can you let it just sit there? My gripe with Shiki is that I always walk away pissed off that they made me eat so much :)

Their Dynamite rolls are off the hook, though they take a little longer than everything else, and their Alex rolls are extremely tasty.

I end up going about once a month now but I make sure to not eat for a week beforeand and afterward!!!

Shiki has gone way downhill.  This used to be a place where you could reliably get large portions at a reasonable price.  Last time I went, the prices were up by at least 30%, and the portions were about 50% smaller.  Not only that, one roll took 45 minutes to come to our table, and still wasn't taken off the tab.

This used to be a place I really looked forward to going to about once a month.  Don't see myself going back.

MMM... Shiki! The thought of this place makes me drool--Homer Simpson style. All you need is one bite and you're going "Oh my gad!"--Apu Nahasalalala-what-was-his-last-name-again? style.

I haven't had one disappointing dish here, and I come here a lot--from the sashimi [albacore belly especially] to the baby lobster roll, everything is freshly scrumdiddlyumptious! The portions are amazingly huge so you get every bang for your buck. You can even request they go easy on the rice if you're on some type of low-carb diet.

The service is always at a 100%--quick, friendly and amazingly helpful. The chefs like to engage in coversation while the waitresses make sure you are properly catered to.

This place can get really packed around lunch time especially because they have these awesome lunch specials where you pick a roll from their specials menu and it comes with 2 appetizers and a miso soup--I usually go with a garden salad and sushi.

I have been going to Shiki for a long time -- I'm talking about since the first week that they opened!  This used to be the place, great people, great quality, great prices, etc.  As mentioned by others, ownership changed.  I'm not sure why the new owner decided to make such drastic changes, particularly with the menu, but Shiki has been turned into just any other sushi place, completely mediocre.  Oh well, at least we had many good years of enjoyment, and all good things must come to an end.  Two stars because the items that remained from the shiki menu (e.g., chunk rolls), were still good although more expensive.  The non-shiki items, well below average.  The good news -- a great excuse to start exploring other sushi options in LA!

Let's face it- animals are delicious.  And if you're half as busy as me, you don't have time to cook them.  Enter sushi: the perfect solution.

Shiki's menu is extensive.  They offer a variety of standard and house rolls (or "rors", as they're known there).  For those of you dining with people who think fish tastes too fishy, they have rolls and entrées starring animals that walked, rather than swam, to their demise.

The prices are very reasonable- but because of that, make a reservation or plan on waiting...  especially on Friday and Saturday nights.

Sushi at Shiki!  You'rr ruv it!

I never thought I'd order a "hot dog roll" at a sushi place, followed by 2 of the chefs looking at me confused, before the one who I requested it from replies "Oh yeah!  I know a hot dog!"  10 minutes later, my buddies and I are sharing a 3-piece "hot dog" roll that was DELICIOUS.  I cannot tell you what it consisted of, not because I don't want to, but because I have no idea what it consisted of.  IRREGAHDLISS, I suggest you order it and ENJOY.
This place serves Costco-size sushi portions (note: these are DELICIOUS portions, not quality-goes-down-because-of-size portions), so don't order too much or you'll feel like the bathroom scene in 'Bridesmaids."  But in a good way.
My roommate ordered the mackerel, which was fantastic (not too "gamey," or should I say "fishy"?  No, that would be absurd.)

Good food, but why say your dish comes with mushrooms and crispy onions if it comes bare? Don't tell me that it is for decoration on the menu alone if it says it is an integral part of the menu.

I think I died and went to sushi heaven, then I died from the awesome food and went to secondary sushi heaven, then I died and..you get the idea.

I originally came here with my family, and good lord this place is fantastic. For starters, the parking is a little narrow, but really that's not a big concern, especially if you come when its not rush hour, because this place is jam packed during.

The waiters/waitresses are very nice and always smiling, its such a warm and welcoming environment, I love it. There's a nice option of sitting outside to enjoy the weather, and if its too hot they pull down the shades. If you sit inside there's tables and a sushi bar (of course!).

Onto the food, the magnificent, delicious, beautiful, and very vivacious food. I apologies if I'm a little too into the description, but I appreciate good food, especially good sushi.

I've actually been here a few times already so I know the special rolls pretty well haha. The Alex roll is fantastic, its like this fresh raw tuna mixed together with herbs and placed on top of a thin layer of tempura rice, and they have a nice sauce on the plate for you to mix it in with, when it comes out its really warm and really delicious.

Another one of my favorites is the Chunk Roll, your choice of salmon or tuna (I get this one each time I go). I normally pick salmon, so its a plate with a salmon roll and on top a healthy donation of diced salmon that was mixed in a some very tasty sauce.

One last roll I'll mention, which might be a hit and miss with some, the Caterpillar roll. I've had this one a couple times, it can be good and it can be bad, but when its good it blows your mind. The roll itself is an eel roll with sliced avocado on top. Now, it takes a bit of time to bake, I think they add the avocado last cause when it comes out the inside is warm and the top is cold, you have to let it sit there for a minute and let the heat of the roll warm the avocado. If you do that and try one, it'll melt in your mouth and its sooooo good.

The food tastes fantastic, the portions are wealthy, the quality of the fish can't be beat. This is my new sushi place, they've assimilated me into their sushi frenzy. Sushi = crack for me?

Very interesting menu. In addition to all the standard Sushi I had the deep fried fish bones and the deep fried shrimp head that came with the Sushi. To say the least it was adventurous. This fish is OK. Nothing to write home about. The sake is a little pricey. 3 stars should do it...

    Mmmmmm Shiki.

Food: I don't even know where to start. I guess I can begin by saying everything is good. They have chunk rolls which are probably in every review of this place. These rolls are very unique as they have huge chunks of whatever fish you order on top of a sushi roll and the portion size is very generous. The fish quality is exceptional as most of what you order will melt in your mouth.

Price: For being in studio city and having large portions, the prices are great. They charge what most other sushi places do (average of $10,$5 for 2 piece sushi etc.)

Parking: They have a lot right in front of the place that you do not need to pay for and there is usually a spot so its not bad.

Ambiance: Very classy place with both indoor and outdoor seeting. Shiki tends to have a very relaxed atmosphere.

The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because I would like to see more variety as far as special rolls are concerned, but thats just me being picky. The place is great and I can't wait to go back!

AHhhh Shiki, it's been too long.  I'm going to be heading here tomorrow but I figured I'd write up a review of one of my favorite Japanese restaurants in Studio City.  For the price, this place cannot be beat.  They have a TON of different varieties to choose from so your friend who doesn't eat raw fish and your sashimi fanatic will both be enjoy their time here.

Personally, I LOVE their salmon teriyaki special here.  If I remember correctly, it comes out with a huge salad and 3 piece sashimi. Deeeelicious!
    Try it out next time.

Oh, and their sashimi...you get nearly DOUBLE the amount fish compared to other japanese restaurants, the quality is pretty good and it's fresh!

Glancing at the dinner prices, I probably wouldn't come here for anything but lunch. The lunch specials are an amazing deal. We ate lots of yummy fish for under $15. Service and patio were good.

I came back after saying that I was done with this place because of my last experience. Rolls were off and so was the service. Came back today for lunch and sat outside in the patio area. Ordered off their lunch menu which has stayed the same, price wise. The lunch menu is definitely a value with their salad and side of albacore, tuna, and salmon sushi. Visky took care of us, actually remembered me which made me feel important again. I can't stay mad at you for long Shiki. Work on your service and you might be 5 star status.

This is my favorite sushi place!!!

Huge portions and consistently good sushi has never failed me.  I have come here for 2 of my birthdays. The Nigiri slices are twice the size of a normal sushi place.  Rolls are huge and you never leave this place hungry.  Its always a great meal and you leave happy.  The chefs at the bar are very friendly. The waiting staff is questionable on a busy day. If you like sushi you don't have to think twice about trying this place out. You won't regret it.  They also do lunch specials.

P.S. Try the Volcano if you like rolls
