Tried out this hole in the wall place since I was in the area. There's no parking lot so you gotta get lucky with street parking. The place doesn't look like much from the outside, but the atmosphere isn't too bad once you get inside.
The lunch menu had reasonable prices and the sushi was actually pretty good. I usually don't like salad, but the house-made dressing they use is surprisingly good..whatever it was. Try out the tonkatsu or pork cutlet. Since the owners are Japanese, they use a different breading than the typical restaurants. The stuff that came in the bento box was also delicious.
I love Shiki. Every time I come home to visit my family in Rochester, it's a family tradition to come eat here together.
Like others have said, it's a small, intimate restaurant with really great appetizers. It seems much more authentic than the other Japanese restaurants in the area. I love the cod liver, the octopus appetizers, and a few of the "specials" that rotate in the menu.
Delicious!
So let's just make things crystal clear...I think Shiki has absolutely AWESOME sushi. Yes the service is unbelievably slow, but it's still worth it. You just have to get your mindset that this is gonna take a while. Have a few beers, chat it up with you dinner date, whatever.
The wasabi shumai are excellent but not for the faint of heart...this appetizers should be listed on the menu as WASABI shumai. Clears the sinuses very well.
I'm a big eel fan and Shiki's is the best in Rochester by far. The sashimi ANYTHING is wonderful as well as extremely fresh. Salmon and tuna are my staples but for certain all the sashimi is...well superb sashimi grade.
And again, yes the service is slow...but they do take-out as well so there's no excuse for not enjoying this gem. And if you think that California Rollin' is just an excellent place for sushi...keep going there because you have zero appreciation for good sushi!
Num, num...get some.
Service was actually pretty fast when I went last week, but the place wasn't exactly hopping when I stopped in on Saturday evening. The sushi was the best I've had in Rochester (but not the best I've ever had). Prices were reasonable and in-line with portions served.
I'll have to admit that it was pretty cool to go to a sushi place in Rochester where businessmen speaking Japanese took saki breaks. However, the seating seemed a bit cramped, as I felt like I was practically on top of the people eating next to me.
Great quality sushi. The fish is fresh and presented well. Nothing revolutionary, but for Rochester it is one of the best.
The restaurant is small, but I like that. I am a repeat customer.
5 Stars because this is graded on a Rochester curve. haha
-1 Star for an inattentive waitress (will explain later) but this place is a gem and worth exploring.
A Japanese Restaurant run by Japanese people is rare these days. Typically they're run by Koreans or Chinese but no not this place! The sushi chef is Japanese, speaks Japanese and so was the hostess/waitress.
I sorta see what last two people were complaining about, Japanese people aren't exactly known to be charismatic nor enthusiastic when they speak to you. I got that feeling from them and it was relatively normal for me, didn't think anything of it but yes there was some issue flagging down the waitress. It did seem like she was inattentive or busy.
I ordered the sushi appetizer which came with 3 pieces of a Tuna Roll and 3 Sushi pieces (Tuna, Salmon and Whitefish?) - Tasted fine to me
Unagi-Don (Eel on Rice) - Pretty good, a little bigger than I expected but otherwise just as I thought it would be. Can't complain.
The salad and miso soup did seem to take a little longer to arrive than I was used to but i just dismissed it as my urban-impatience.
Overall I would say go if you're from NYC up here for school and you're homesick for asian food. It's worth judging for yourself.
Kudos to Shiki for overcoming the curse of this street address (before they opened I watched 3 other restaurants open here and then close).
I was expecting Shiki to be just another sushi place, but it's actually a bona fide Japanese restaurant. In addition to sushi / sashimi, all manner of appetizers, a variety of items 'from the kitchen', and a good selection of noodle soups are available.
Can't help but think Shiki's offerings constitute a serious antidote to the popular notion that Japanese cuisine is uniformly light and healthful. A big percentage of their offerings have a close encounter with the deep fryer before they're served.
But happily for me the menu has more to offer. The sushi and sashimi are generally good, but it's the starters that set Shiki apart. Repeat favorites are the Ika Geso (squid legs with spicy sauce) and the E-Dako (cooked baby octopus). I will also admit to having seriously enjoyed the Unagi Yanagawa (eel and vegetables with egg) and the sweet Nasu-Den (eggplant with sweet miso sauce), even though they were oily - which is usually a turn-off. I remember staring at the half-centimeter deep oil puddle left in the Nasu-Den plate and wondering exactly what distance I'd have to jog in order to work off all those excess calories.
The restaurant's decor has a number of nice touches, and the crisp Shiki uniforms perfectly suit the restaurant's atmosphere and look stylishly practical. The place is small, but I somehow never feel like my fellow diners are invading my space.
Mmmm! This is definitely a hidden treasure in Rochester. When it comes to sushi this is THE place to go in Rochester. The fish is very, very fresh and the staff is friendly.
If you go here you have to try their tuna tataki - to die for!
Hungry and craving more sushi for my tummy, I yelped this place on Rochester's network. I ordered the Dragon roll which was wrapped with avacados. So good ;-0
The downside of this place is the texture of the rice. It's really dry and a bit skimpy. Otherwise, for Rochester, I'd recommend it.
Reading the reviews on this place inspired my friend and I to give it a try last night. We agree with all the accolades - this place is awesome!
I was impressed by the extensive selection of appetizers. We ordered the deep fried shumai and they were delightful! Some of the others sounded interesting, like the cream croquettes and deep fried chicken nuggets - maybe I'll give those a try next time, there will definitely be a next time.
The spicy tuna, crispy, tempura and dragon rolls get 5 stars, too. The freshest and tastiest in Rochester, for sure!!!
The atmosphere is quiet, the people are nice and the food is delicious. I'd recommend going for a quiet lunch with a significant other.
I just went last week and I can't wait to go again!
This is the best Sushi restaurant in Rochester. I only have one word and its AUTHENTIC! Their lunch box sides changes everyday, so your not eating the same thing each week. Highly recommend this place. I stopped going to Plum House, Plum Garden(over priced), and House of Sushi(terrible).
My friend introduced me to this not too long ago, and it's a great hidden treasure. Excellent box-plated lunches, along with good sushi! I hate soup, but I'll eat their's! I recommend the teriayki salmon for lunch, and try the tea: it's so refreshing. We are going there Wed again for lunch!
Wonderful little hole-in-the-wall restaurant that won't break your bank account! You can get a decent-sized teriayki lunch including soup and salad for under $10. I eat here about once a week!
Best Sushi in Rochester and paradoxically one of the cheapest. Authentic, fresh, and reasonable something most of the other sushi places in Rochester can't lay claim to - especially all three.
