Within two weeks of my first review, I went back for a farewell dinner party. And I wasn't disappointed!
14 people, they took reservations and decided to sit us on the second floor...on the ground. ( I am unsure if the girl who made the call wanted to sit on the floor or it just happened that way). We all managed to cram in and the waitress was very patient as we all pondered over the menu. Being the only Asian at the table, I advised people on dinner choices, and everyone was extremely pleased. The waitress actually recognized me...and was very sweet, she changed my sashimi dinner order to ALL white tuna sashimi with brown rice, with no extra charge! Dessert got everyone talking...since we ordered a chocolate lava cake and everyone was fighting for it! One girl had to order it to go for her boyfriend...(but she ended up eating a few bites before she left!) Check time was a breeze, waitress was very efficient and split the check accordingly.
Good, fresh food...great service. It's worth the drive! :)
Tip-bits:
If you make reservations, request for table seating on the first floor if you have long legs and don't like sitting on the ground. I had cramps many times during dinner time. :(

Lost That Loving Feeling!
For as far back as I can remember I loved Shibui and it ranked high on my list of terrific Sushi Restaurants. What happened to them or am I just grown up?
The restaurants need a severe upgrade, the table cloths are beyond washed out - borderline tacky Vegas buffet restaurant look a like.
The service was embarrassing. The hot towels brought to us were not hot, our waitress and service were terrible!
The food was average and unmemorable. And have I mentioned how bad the service was?
I will not eat here again, inside the restaurant, and if I eat their food it will be on a take out only basis. It was OK.
Oh boy have I lost that loving feeling for Shibui.
If you're into special sushi rolls, you have to try Shibui~ Sooooo many different special sushi rolls. Smoky roll was my favorite as a smoked salmon & creme cheese lover!! We also ordered Halloween Roll since this weekend is Halloween. Pinky Roll, Sex On the Beach Roll, & Bagel Roll also good!! And we will come back for Christmas Roll, yay~
Bunch of appetizers too!! & I love the fact that I can order Sweet Potato Tempura instead of the mixed tempura. Yaki-Tori was so good also!! Don't forget dessert, Green Tea Creme Brûlée was super good!!
So I eat sushi at least 3 times a week. Just love it. This has to be the cheapest and unbelievable to believe some of the freshest sushi I have ever tried. Also they have 4 different steak tartares. The kimchi with NY strip steak tartare was just mouthwatering delicious. So when in Miami this is the place to hit. Tried a few other places in Miami. Sushi Rock, SushiSamba and that other joint on Lincoln, Doraku. Those other places don't hold a candle.
Liked it !!! totally did - the plum wine certainly helped things as well.
The Sushi is good, the service is OK. Sitting on the floor certainly makes it feel more authentic.
The Boat has everything you would enjoy, well presented and quite fresh.
Good Sushi, excellent Sashimi.
Still love this place but one of our rolls had WAYYYYYY too much mayo/conch sauce on it (Volcano roll) and there were kids running around because of a birthday party. The place is too small for kids to be running- makes me nervous!
The other rolls we had were the USA roll and the Shibui roll- both very good.
Anyway, Shibui cannot be beat! Great prices, great portions and good taste (just don't go with the Volcano roll)

The one thing that stands out for me about Shibui is the value. I was shocked at how much sushi we got for the price. I ordered edamame, the Arizona roll (which was good but not as good as the USA roll), three pieces of nigiri and a dessert. All for 24 bucks. Coming from San Francisco, that is a really good deal to me.
The upstairs is mostly sit on the floor seating. I would not advise anyone with knee or leg problems. It is very cramped, and people with long legs would probably not be very comfortable.
Sushi was fresh and tasted great. The red bean and fried banana dessert was awesome!!
Oh Shibui how I love thee!
Shibui is definitely one of my favorite japanese restaurants in South Miami. The food here is awesome...I've never had anything here that I've been dissappointed with anything here. The sushi is always fresh and delicious, the filet mignon teriyaki is mouth watering...absolutely everything is good...you can't go wrong! The inside of Shibui is two floors, and I recommend that you request to be sat upstairs simply because you sit on mats on the floor japanese style so that only adds to the experience. I also recommend that you call ahead and make reservations because depending on what time you get there the wait can be kind of long. The restaurant is very popular but not very big, so that whole supply and demand thing comes into play here...and there simply isn't enough supply on some nights. If you are looking for a good japanese restaurant..look no further...you've found it.
I have heard many great thing about Shibui. I do not like sushi - I know that's a party foul in Miami because it's the thing to eat. I just happen to like my food very dead and very cooked, but I have been to a few sushi place that have other food, fish, meat and or vegetables that I liked and enjoyed the experience.
I did like the " idea" of sitting on the floor while eating but it just made everything seem more dirty like my glass of water. When I mentioned I was promptly given another but .....
I ordered a chicken teriyaki and some seaweed thing with rice. I thought that it was very ok tasting meaning that I could have made it at home with some Kikkoman sauce and left of packets packets from Chinese take out.
The rice and wine and the fried tempura ice cream saves this place to get it 3 stars. i would go again only to drink the wine - I wish they had a bar.
Ahhhhh, Shibui, you are one unique place! Walking through the first floor of Shibui reminds me of an old Asian brothel. Okay, maybe not, but, just the sight of the 2nd story balcony is so appealing to see. Through the balcony rail slats, you can see people sitting on the floor with their feet dangling or not. When the feet are dangling, it definitely adds to the ambience!
Geisha house/saloon, whatever this place reminds me of, you got to love Shibui's second floor seating and their food. The rolls we had were all wonderful but my favorites were the caliente and rainbow roll. I love you guys for creating the caliente! It's like my favorite filet-o-fish sandwich was reincarnated into sushi! And the rainbow roll was so beautiful to look at and it tasted so fresh.
My only knock on this place is the tempura ice cream. It's a misnomer because it's really ice cream fried panko-katsu style and it's got a strong amaretto flavor to it, which I'm not a fan of. I definitely recommend the tempura banana (cause it's actually fried tempura style) with the green tea and azuki ice cream instead. That stuff is heaven.
This place is alright I suppose when it comes to the food. Decent usuzukuri. Acceptable shrimp shumai, tuna tataki and roll assortment. I have been many times but I had such terrible service on two separate occasions that it warrants me never returning.
The first time around we had a larger group and they put us in the backroom upstairs to accommodate. We repeatedly had to get up and hunt our server down for water, to take our order etc. The second time it was a full house and we were again put in the backroom. The service was so bad it was almost comical. Nevermind our server being m.i.a. most of the meal, they actually closed the restaurant with us still in it waiting for our cheque. I timed them for an hour and finally gave up and called the restaurant from my cell phone to which they answered "sorry we're closed". I replied "yes, we know we've been waiting for an hour for our server to return". Boy were they surprised! That's the PG version. There were a lot of expletives were involved but for the sake of this community I'll muzzle myself.
This place by far has the best appetizers I've ever had at any sushi restaurant. While the sushi is excellent also, I always find the appetizers the best part of my meal!
The ambience at Shibui is wonderful. It is so spacious with 2 floors: tables downstairs and floor seating upstairs. If you want a truly memorable experience, ask to go upstairs (if you don't mind sitting on the floor). The staff is always friendly (especially the owners which my boyfriend knows!) and there is always a large crowd of people.
You can definitely tell that this is a popular yet hidden secret by so many people in Kendall. It's a bit off Sunset and kind of hidden if you don't look for it but once you do, you'll be glad you stopped by!
Also, you might want to book a reservation since it gets packed on the weekends.
Last night we went to Ra in the South Miami area... we sat there for about ten minutes until I was looking at the Yelp app on my phone when I decided $11 bucks a roll for a place rated 2.5 is not even worth a try! We remembered having come to Shibui once and having an awesome meal so we called, made reservations, and drove right over. (Ra doesn't do reservations)
They had our table ready once we got there and our server was super kind and helpful. She even brought us a cup of sake on the house because we had never tried it before and weren't sure if we'd like it... a couple drinks later we were pretty damn sure that we LOVE sake now!
Overall this place is great! The rolls are big and delicious, not to mention at an excellent price. A lot of the rolls on the menu kinda seem to just be variations of the same thing but at least there's something for everyone. Shibui gets 5 well deserved stars and a big thank you for saving me from an awful night at Ra!
Great sushi place recommended by fellow Yelpers Kristin N. and Tony C. We ordered the beef tataki as an appetizer which was perfect. For dinner I ordered the Arizona roll and Rainbow roll, both which were melt in my mouth delicious.
On a whim I ordered the incredibly opaque iced green tea which I spotted a nearby patron sipping on. The waiter asked if I ever had it before, and brought out a sample for me to try to see if I liked it, which I did and ordered a glass. It wasn't sweet, but had a very mild flavor.
Thankfully Shibui has a good selection of non-sushi dishes for those individuals who prefer cooked dishes, so it's a happy medium for both parties. After last night's dinner I only wished we'd known about this place sooner and before we moved further north because it's a great restaurant.
Shibui is a great sushi spot. It's also very romantic. Upstairs tends to be more private although you have to figure out a comfortable way to sit on the floor.
I made a reservation for Friday night just a few hours before without a problem and noticed the long line of people waiting outside to be seated. We arrived a little late but were seated promptly.
The service was very friendly and quick. The sushi rolls yummy: we had the dragon roll, spider roll and the sex on the beach roll (the last one was recommended by our waiter). They were all good, although the spider roll did have a tendency to break a little easily.
Overall, I loved the food, the ambiance, the convenient parking and the friendly service. I and my wife will be back!
Best sushi I ever had!!
I love sushi. And this place has VERY fresh sushi. I have eaten at many sushi restaurants and have found that the closer you are to the ocean, the fresher the fish is. Coincidence? Maybe. But Shibui, being further than a rocks throw to the ocean, is as fresh as it gets.
A couple of small negatives. Shibui is small with tight walking spaces. Does this take away from the food? Absolutely not. Just an observation. Second, they don't serve ice tea! Just green tea. (iced) Is iced tea going out of style? Again, not even close to removing a star!
There's a seating area upstairs with floor seating! Again tight, but the experience more than makes up for the small spaces. This place deserves every star! And your date will want to come back again and again! Way to go Shibui!
Great place if you want to try something different for the ordinary... There is a wide selection of food to pick for and they sever you a lot of food. On the 2nd floor there is authentic Japanese seating on the floor that is very cool!
I recommend this place to go with friend or on a date the ambient is very nice and staff is very friendly and attentive. You have a very good selection of Sushi, udon, Soba and more... It a very good place to go I recommend it :D
I ate here last night and found it to be a nice place. We sat upstairs which is seating on the floor. I have long legs so it was not the most confortable place to dine, but was an experience to be had nonetheless.
I thought the Sushi was good and the price really can't be beat. The nigiri sushi was fresh and well portioned. Each piece was only a $1.50! I usually pay $5 or $6 for two pieces. The rolls were great too.
I would recommend a reservation because it looked like the wait time could easily exceed 30 minutes on the weekends. Overall, it was a great place to eat.
Firstly, I know two of the four owners, so is this review prematurely biased? LOL, of course it is. Is the sushi good? Effin' good. Did I have to know the owners to like this place? No. Was the five stars necessary? Yes... in short. Are these short, neo-grammatical sentence questions necessary? No.
Haha, no really! This place is truly impressive. The service was excellent, the sushi was sooooo good and so so fresh. The aesthetic was very japanese. And want to hear the truth? The owners didn't know I was there and I was treated like any other joe. Go to this place, but I suggest you make a reservation or expect to wait!
Cramped eating area is my only complaint. They are open later than most other sushi places, with good prices and good quality food.
The best Sushi i have ever had in miami.
I have never had any problems with service, food, or wait. But i do always make reservations.
I tried to give Shibui a second chance, but they were nothing more than disappointing during my last two visits. A few years ago, I agree, they were on top of their game. However, it seems as though the quality of service and food has gone downhill. I experienced similar problems during my last two visits: slow service, dirty glassware (I despise lipstick stains... completely unacceptable!) and average tasting food. I have no motivation to return to Shibui.
*I KNOW THIS IS LONG, BUT TRUST ME I RECOMMEND YOU READ IT*
OK where do I start. I am not the type of person that likes to complain, but my last experience in this restaurant drove me to open an account here in YELP! just so i can at least speak my mind.
The first time I ever ate at Shibui was about 8 years ago, and I fell in love, with the restaurant, the food, and the service! For the past 8 years i have called it my most FAVORITE sushi place.
UNTIL 03/20/09, my husband wanted to take me out to dinner for sushi, remembering that Shibui is my favorite, we drove from Miramar (Broward) all the way down to Sunset (Miami) about 30-35 min drive, we arrived around 10:30 PM, we were immediately seated on the first floor as we requested, but in the back corner table, right next to a table of very loud, very obnoxious, immature, and bad mannered people. (other tables were available)
When our wild curly hair, too much makeup wearing waitress arrived to take our order, she was not very friendly, but she was no rude either.
She forgot to bring the hot white towels they always bring to cleanse our hands before eating sushi, then I believe is was due to the volume level of the talking from the table next to us, she did not get all of our order.
The Service:
1- We ordered extra Eal sauce, she brought a tiny amount not even enough for 1 person!
2-She forgot our Volcano roll order, then she brought it after we were done eating everything, including our tempura dinner.
3-she was MIA (Missing.In.Action) almost all the time.
4-We ordered spicy mayo, Never got that.
5-At the end when we told her we were not happy with the food, she replied "but you ate it all,,,right??" with a smirk on her face and hypocritical tone. (so much for the customer is always RIGHT!)
The Food:
1- The appetizers and sushi tasted good, but..........
2- All the Rolls we ordered (caliente, dragon, fox, and volcano) were falling apart, some were not even rolled all the way, the volcano was half the portion I remembered from the last time I was there and being a hot plate, it was a bit cold.
3-now to the very expensive Shrimp tempura dinner... Well my husband and I are still recovering from the burns on the ceiling of our mouth, due to the scorching shrimp we received, then to top it of, the tempura sauce was so bland, I actually had to pour soy sauce in it to give it some taste.. (I've had better Shrimp tempura from a delivery/take out place in Miami Lakes!!!)
To add insult to injury, while we had to endure bad service and bad food, the obnoxious people next to us were taking off their shoes and placing their bare feet on the table, the chairs, and on each other!!!!
In conclusion, our total bill was $82.00 and we paid it without making a scene, however I wrote a message on the back of the credit card receipt they keep, asked a manager to contact me, and I am still waiting.

Every time I come here I get stuck sitting on the floor despite my protest with the people I am with. I hate it. Luckily for the rest of you, you have the choice of sitting on a chair, comfortably, or on the floor. They also offer training sticks if you can't figure out how to use chop sticks as well as forks for those of you who refuse to embrace other cultures (xenophobes).
The menu isn't as vast as some other local joints but there are some really good selections. Not just rolls, but tempura, teriyaki and such. This place is a lot of fun in groups, as you can all order your food and share the different flavors.
The atmosphere is a cozy one, there are two levels (seats downstairs, floor pillows and broken asses upstairs) and the lighting is not too bright and not too dim. The dessert was delicious, I am not sure what we had, but i recall trying the fried ice cream and thinking, "this is not as good as the green tea ice cream. unicorns rock"
The reason I did not give this establishment 5 stars is for the simple fact that whenever I show up and my table is not ready, i have to wait out front. Now, this is normally not a big deal, but the front of the restaurant smells like raw sewage on a warm summers day.
The best quality about Shibui is the ambiance. The restaurant is set up to look like a Japanese home, complete with tatami mats, two floors, a sushi bar with flat screen tvs (2nd floor), and cute wooden tables. The lighting is romantic. They have udon, tempura, and soba dishes, and pretty good sushi. I would give it four stars, but last year quality started to suffer a little and there was just excessive amounts of mayo sauce in everything.
Otherwise, it's a great place for dinner. Make reservations!
I recently moved into the area and a few local friends highly recommended Shibui.
Physically the place looks very legit. The location is loft styled so what I initially thought to be a very small establishment turned out to have a whole second floor specifically with floor seating. Don't worry the first floor has regular tables but for the full experience I would recommend the floor seating on second floor, which is also where the sushi bar is.
The service was very warm and friendly. Beer selection included the typical japanese beers including one of my favorites (Asahi Dry). We ordered Spyder Roll, Spicy Tuna, Volcano, and Rainbow. All were great except for the spicy tuna lacked....spicyness.
Anyway, I still highly recommend Shibui for your Sushi needs.
This place is the real deal. I've been a patron for longer than I can remember and love that they always seem to have a family-vibe going on from the time you walk in.
Great sushi, awesome service and reasonably priced considering everyone and their brother is opening sushi spots all over town. My mouth's watering, I'm heading out the door and going there now for a Sapporo and sushi bite.
I have been going here for 2 years also and I LOVE IT. You can't beat the price and the quality of it. This is my favorite Sushi place in Miami.
The sushi is super fresh, my favorite is the Bagel rolls, and the Rainbow roll. Every time I go I say I'm going to try something different, but it's just so good, I can't help my self.
I have also tried the steak skewers as appetizers, which was pretty good. But my favorite appetizer is their stir fried vegetables. I don't know what type of sauces they use, but I want to learn how to make this at home, it is so good.
The tried their fried ice cream the other day and I'm not a big fan of this, but surprisingly i really liked it. I also had their fried cheesecake which was really good. Those are the only two things I have tried though because usually I'm too stuffed to make it to desert, after the appetizer and food. My boyfriend always gets a Bagel roll and the Dragon Roll, he also loves it.
I highly recommend you try this place. Oh and if you love the Japanese style "sitting on the floor" the entire up stairs is for sitting on the floor, I love it. If you don't like to sit on the floor because it's uncomfortable for you, the down stairs is full of regular tables.
BTW Make reservations, it's worth it. I have only waited 5 to 10 minutes with reservations, and usually they are much faster than that. If you don't make reservations, the weekend gets pretty packed and you can be waiting a while. The only thing I can complain about is the Parking Lot, it gets so packed that sometimes it's a mission to find parking, but we always find parking so it's not that much of a biggie.
TRY IT OUT, IT'S WORTH IT!
Shibui is my favorite sushi restaurant. This IS as good as it gets! The fish is so fresh, so delicious. If you eat at Shibui one night and another sushi restaurant the next, you CAN tell the difference. I love sitting upstairs on the floor. It's so fun and makes for a great ambience. Take a few friends and you'll have a wonderful time. The service is wonderful and the food is fantastic. The cooked food is delicious as well and they have a wonderful selection. The parking is a little difficult when it gets busy, but completely worth it!
Shibui is a great restaurant -casual yet elegant dining. The food is great, and they have a wonderful variety of unique sushi rolls. The sushi is extremely fresh, and prepared to your liking.
The service is friendly, and they are quick.
Best sushi rolls: dragon roll, eel roll, and the spider roll.
Make sure you sit upstairs if you'd like the authentic Japanese feel of sitting on the floor - it's a must at least one time.
Ha-Ha That's Right one of the BEST Sushi Restaurants in Miami is in Kendall aka the burbs. Even I, a non sushi fanatic love this place.
This fantastic restaurant is in a house looking homey little building. I've always sat upstairs on the comfy pillows on the floor.
Everything on the menu is fresh and you can't go wrong however, feel free to ask for recommendations and don't skip dessert.
Every year in August i go to shibui for my friends birthday. SHe loves her sushi so on that night i suck up my non-sushi lovingness and go for her. But needless to say Shibui is still good for the non-sushi people who do exist out there (yes there are people like that..)
Ive had the chicken stir fry and the vegi tempura and some chicken (maybe chicken katsu but i cant remember for sure) and they all have been on the money. And even i the non-sushi person thinks their sushi looks amazing, so amazing i wish i could eat it (eeks i know!)
Parking is kinda on the suckish side, and you should always make a reservation. Seating is either regular chairs or floor cushions, and as cool and fun the floor cushions are sometimes they can be a pain for people with bad knees like me.
Overall really nice place, good for your "happy ___________"
Being a big sushi eater from California, this is a great spot.
The food was delicious and the service was very good.
I would definitely go back there again!!
Oh how I miss Miami, pretty much for shibui.
So cozy and comfy and hits that sushi spot you've been craving all day!
mmm beef tataki, drizzled with lemon, melts right when it hits your tongue.
and the JC roll: with cooked fish, crab, avocado, lettuce and touch of spicy mayo. delish. Just ask for a side of ginger dressing and double dip this bad boy, once in soy, once in ginger. trust me.
Cuke Crab roll is riceless and so refreshing!
And yes, there is a lot on the menu. Cooked items, teriyake and such. I stick to the sushi because it's that fresh and that good.
Do not skip desert. My personal fave is the tempura banana with Azuki Bean (red bean) Ice Cream.
Delicious Sushi - really fantastic. We had the boat and everything on it was great. Also, for the first time l had plum wine at the recomendation of the server and it went quite well with our order.
Even though l am more of a sashimi fan, the rolls were amazing and l was taken with them.
If you sit upstairs I recomend for the ladies, no short skirts. Really.
I went on Saturday will a few of my friends and we were seating within 5 minutes without reservations. This probably never happens because the place is ALWAYS packed. So we were seated up stairs and we sat ON THE FLOOR. super cool. We ordered some beers and saki and then we each ordered a roll (dragon, volcano, and caliente). When our drinks came our waitress encouraged us to do 'sake bombs' which was really cool and nice on her part because no waitress has ever encouraged me to make a mess. I guess shes one of the more fun waitress. We ordered cheesecake for dessert which was absolutely amazing. The best I've ever had. Overall the waitress was very nice friendly and helpful, the food was perfect and we had a great time :]
Most amazing sushi in Miami! I recommend sitting at the Sushi Bar. The sushi chef are amazing :) My husband and I go every chance we get :)
Shibui dethroned Sushin Izakaya in Coral Gables as my favorite sushi place. The rolls here are incredibly delicious and fresh, if slightly overpriced. Will also add that the chicken wings are incredibly tasty, but the stir fry dishes and teriyakis leave something to be desired. My husband ordered the chicken teriyaki on our last visit and it was pretty bland. Stick to the sushi and you'll be alright.
Whoever gave this place a good rating has obviously never eaten good sushi. This place has the worst sushi I've ever had. One of the horrible rolls I ordered literally had over a cup of mayo on top of it. WTF?!?! These people need to go to California and learn how to make sushi. I hope I save someone from going there with this review.
