I miss this place! I've been going here ever since I moved to the city many moons ago - I got lots of stuff here, and it seemed really cheap - at least compared to Whole Paycheck.
I loved their version of corn nuts and dried apples. I get them now at Trader Joe's, but TJ isn't across the street from me! And I miss the super cheap spices. I still have a few bags laying around my kitchen. It will be a sad day when my curry powder is no more...
I just have the Vitamine Shoppe right around the corner, but they seem "borgish" with their matching blue shirts and constant following of their customers. Oh, Sherwyn's, what ever will I do without you? -

This is Chicago's greatest health food store. It was here long before Whole Foods, The Vitamin Shoppe, or any other johnny-come-lately. It still has the best selection of supplements in the city, and a nice selection of organic produce and great bulk herbs and spices. Their prices are still mostly competitve too, although if you shop for price alone, you may find marginally better deals at some of the big franchises.
But you will not find a more knowledgable staff anywhere. I tend to patronize them somewhat out of loyalty, although Sherwyn doesn't need my business any more, thank you. I started with him when he was a tiny storefront across the street thirty odd years ago. There is something to be said for shared history! -

I'm so shocked to see that Sherwyn's is closed! Does anyone have the story behind this? What happened? It's the only health food store I liked because it had everything: groceries, vitamins, books, magazines, beauty products. If someone knows why they're gone please post.

It's closed?! It's closed?! Nooo! I took it for granted when I lived in the area a few years ago. Now I wish I shopped there more often to get the most out of it before it closed. They had a great selection of soy milk, protein bars, vitamins, and herbs, and it was cheaper than Whole Foods.

I know Sherwyn's is closed now, but that won't stop me from posting about it and how great it was and lamenting the fact that it's gone. I'm so sad to see this health food store go, surely driven under by the Whole Foods of the world. Sherwyn's had a great selection of organic foods, dried fruits, and herbs and spices. There was also a huge variety to their supplements. I thought the prices were very reasonable, especially for the dried fruits, nuts, and spices. Come back, Sherwyn's! I miss thee!

I too miss Sherwyn's. None of the existing places can replace it.
They had a wide variety. I loved to purchase food items especially in there. The Vitamin Shoppe's has made an effort at adding foods, but the choices are poor. I can do better at Whole Foods. I say thanks to Sherwyn's for the years of serving the community. It was one of the last indepent health food stores left. Independent stores have a difficult time competing with the chains like Vitamin Shoppe. Again, Sherwyn I really loved your store and I miss it a WHOLE lot. -

Everything that you could want health-wise is in there from the very basics of food and vitamins and organic stuff to even books and appliances, too.

This health food store on Diversey is for those who strictly follow rigorous training regiments, eating habits, and all that good stuff. It's a rather pricey place and you would expect such healthy and specialized merchandise to be.

It is nice to see that there are still independently owned health food stores in the city. This store has a huge selection of healthy things, from books to appliances to obviously foods. They have really good deals on dried items in particular, such as nuts and dehydrated fruits.

OMG! So sorry Sherwyn's is no longer around. I used to work there in the late 80s and loved the staff...second family. Does anyone remember or keep in touch with Liz, Jerome, Neil, or Meagan just to name a few? (I was one of the twins)

I love this store! Its got everything you could ever want as far as health food and supplements go! I could seriously spend hours in here looking at everything and reading labels... its relatively cheap too, cheaper than GNC most likely because its not a national chain!

Sherwyn's is probably the largest health food store in the city. It even has enough "normal" food and produce to be worthy of substituting it for a trip to the grocery store. Its greatest strengths are the huge stock of herbal supplements and its very knowledgable staff, and the amazingly cheap array of rices, beans and other grains for cooking all sorts of interesting recipes. If you cook a lot or havea big household, buying herbs in bulk is a really good deal too. It's great that it continues to thrive in light of competition from Whole Foods and the ridiculous Vitamin Shoppe.

The organic and/or environmentally friendly beauty products here are a good find, and average-priced. I like shopping here for myself, but wouldn't use Sherwyn's if I was cooking dinner for a large group/family, for example. An excellent selection of teas is available, as well as allergy-friendly foods.

Great place to check out for some really healthy stuff. They not only carry vitamens, energy bars, and food, but they also have lots of literature on staying healthy and eating healthy. Its a great place and has a lot to choose from. The sales people here are really great as well -- they really know their stuff!

This is a pretty good place for health food and organic stuff. Lots of choices for some things, not so much for others. definitely worth going in and taking a look.

Helpful, knowledgeable staff. Prices can be a bit high, but they can't buy in massive bulk the way Whole Foods can. They're happy to special order items, and the herbologists and vitamin specialists really know what they're talking about.

Great place for health food and vitamins. Organic meals, fruits and veggies. I would say, great place, though watch out for the prices, they are up there.

The staff at the front are not very helpful and seems clueless about some of the products I was searching for. Other than that, the prices seem OK for a health food place.

While I'm not totally into the supplement thing, I swing by here to pick up vitamins and clif bars, of which they have a huge selection. The people here are much friendlier than across the street at the Vitamin Shoppe.

Sherwyns was iconic, one of the best stores for moderately priced healthy foods. I will miss them a bunch. I used to purchase their dried red beans, which were the best along with the must-have maple pecans.
I have found one other store, Capitol Discount, that has a variety of supplements reasonably priced. -

I like this place for vitamins. They have a good selection and everything is easy to find here. They also have a lot of other great healthy products.
