I went here because of Hugo's review (and my old roommate used to bring home that sweet-smelling shermans).

It is delicious.  It is old school.  Its well worth the money and the trip.

Fatty ribs that are a bit disgusting... Last resort for ribs- especially since it appears that the restaurant isn't the cleanest place.

I'm surprised no one's reviewed Sherman's. Quite honestly you'd be hardpressed to find any information on the net about the history about this place. This is going to require some good old fashioned research on my part as I am sketchy on the details. I remember growing up knowing about 3 locations that all wove the "Sherman's BBQ" flag..well, not a literal flag...more like an awning. You get the idea!. There was one on the 160's, another right by where i lived on 136th and broadway and this one. My family was never really into barbeque so i never got to taste it as a kid. By time I got my own place two of these locations had closed. Plus I heard that the one most folks gravitated to was the 7th Ave location. Since my sister moved into the area, though, we've made it custom to have sherman's at least once a month for the last 6 years. It's perfect as Sunday, guilty-pleasure food!

From the outside I can tell you right nothing will appeal to you about the location. In fact I wish I had money to donate a restored sign to this restaurant because the S-h-e-r has faded or fallen off. In my eyes it has landmark status just as much as Sylvia's or Lenox Lounge but I suppose they have any dedicated PR personnel. As you inch closer the first thing you'll notice is the sweet smells blowing its way through the fan vent setup where the racks of ribs are in rotisserie mode cooking to perfection. When you walk in the presentation is as bare bones as bare bones can get. The space is divided by a counter with a bullet-proof window and revolving caddy (like most uptown liquor stores). The folks who work behind the counter I believe are the original owners or close family members because they look like they've been there for ever. It's a mom-and-pop place with mom and pop literally serving the food!

Menu options are basic. You've got ribs or chicken for meats and your choice of three sides. The meal lets you pick two sides. They've got potato salad, cole slaw, and spaghetti. You also get a piece of italian bread with butter. The sides are decent. It's the ribs that you go there for however. They are perfectly seasoned, moist, and (at your own request) drenched in delicious barbeque sauce. You can ask anyone whose been in Harlem for a long time about ribs and they'll throw in Sherman's in that list. The plates are 10 bucks are you get them in a paper plates wrapped in aluminum foil...just like grandma. As you have gathered, this is take out only. And they don't deliver. So...either you live the near the area or you're not too far from a place where you can eat shamelessly.

Just a note, the prices for the plates went up about 4-5 years ago. If i'm not mistaken it used to be something like $6 for like 10 years. That was their first increase in the longest. I think it was fair though.
An old staple of Harlem...gotta take it like it is.
