Sausage, sausage, sausage! We go for the sausage. I never knew sausage could come so many ways until we went to Sheridan Fruit Co.

There's great produce, a yummy deli, and if you take a minute to look around you can actually find some pretty great "specialty" items. We found some pretty awesome giant pasta shells on our last visit. Sometimes changing up the pasta can really make a dish special :).

This is not a review for 1 visit. this is based on 20+ visits.
5 stars for the meat selection. Especially the freezer by the meat counter
5 stars for the fellas working in the meat department.
4 stars for bulk foods department.
4 stars for produce department (sometimes 5, sometimes 3)
    3 stars for deli/baked goods.
    What's that 21 stars

    -20 for the checkout clerks.

These are single-handedly the worst customer service people in town. All I ask of a cashier is acknowledge that I am there. I don't need small talk or any other "above and beyond" or "team spirit"  from them. Just a hello and a thank you. Wait... not even a thank you...how about just a "hello". No? Then how about a smile of acknowledgement? Still NO??? How about some eye contact? STILL NO???

Again this a 20 visit review. There will not be a 21st. Not even the great and helpful people in the meat department can get me to look past the check out clerks.

They must have great job security?

Sheridan Fruit Company is down the road from my studio, so I've been eating there regularly for the past couple of years.  I was shopping there as well until my husband was diagnosed with celiacs.  This place is not friendly to gluten intolerant people, even though they try to be (its very sad.)  My husband regularly found items with soy in them in the gluten free section.  THe gluten free jelly bellies are right next to the bulk extra-gluten flour.  And they bake fresh items in house, which is more painful than it should be because they have all gluten free meats.  I mean, if they didn't have flour floating in the air, there'd be some of the yummiest pastrami on the planet in my home right now.  It makes me very sad.

So if you're gluten friendly, IE can tolerate some gluten and are not a celiac, this place is a great place to go for some yummy food.

THe grill has some damn yummy hot dogs, and the sandwiches are awesome as well.  Also, they carry local specialty sodas like Fentmens botanically brewed.

Yummiest food, especially the deli and sausages.  If anything, go for the variety of fresh sausages.  The staff is always friendly and the outdoor grill is great in the summer!

We are up in goose hallow and started shopping here on our walks across the bridge. I like this place, especially for meat from grass fed farms. we got some lovely grass fed veal scallopini and a fantastic slab of grass fed beef a cut called flap cut. flavorful and was had with a great red wine reduction.

the produce although quite nice is pretty pricey, and unfortunately the chard we bought literally rotted in the fridge over night. sad face.

The carry a nice variety of cream, butter and local cheese. The nice thing is the grill, you pay inside for an assortment of sausages and burgers and pick them up at the grill. serve your self condiment station as well. love a quick sausage at lunch.

Sheridan's is quickly becoming my go to spot for quick shopping. I love the neighborhood vibe they have going on and it's easy to get in and out unless you choose to go during mlk/grand ave rush hour like I did today. The traffic is so annoying!

We've picked up just about anything we need from a nice dinner to a picnic in the park. It's a no brainer to pick up some stuff from their deli, some fresh local strawberries and hit the park on a sunny day. We haven't invested in anything from the butcher yet, other than a dog bone for our dogson but definately spent some time drooling over their selection. That's just too big of a selection of sausages for any one person to hangle at one time..pun intended. We may hit it up this weekend for some 4th of July bbq'ing.

I've always gotten great service and friendliness from the staff when I'm there..so far. Don't miss the greens by the lb or decently priced herb selection..or the bulk grains and spices section. I love love scooping a bit here and a bit there for my meals..I'm really falling in love with this quaint, laid back old school store.

My boyfriend dragged me in here last weekend and I've been back twice since then. I expected good, natural produce and, true to Portlandian form, a few other quirky products. What I was not prepared for was the deli counter. I can't eat a lot of wheat and/or sugar products so this was like a wonderland. It's not an eye-poppingly huge selection, but it is definitely quality. I built myself quite a spread with their provolone, hot coppa, and pulled pork. They also carry Secret Aardvark, which no one can go wrong with.

If you're familiar with Southeast Portland, think of Sheridan as an affordable (ludicrously affordable, actually), but just as delicious, version of Pasta Works.

There are a few reviews here that rate the service as lacking or rude. Frankly, I find most Yelpers to be too sensitive about service and think it's dumb to knock off two or three stars because the person helping them was having a bad day. Maybe I've just been lucky so far, but having been helped and served by several of their employees, I only found one to be less than enthusiastic and he at least got the job done. I won't take away a star because the guy at the butcher's counter didn't want to chat.

Dog owners: If for no other reason, go here for your pet. Do him or her a favor and get one of the bones from the meat counter. For around $3, you can get a huge still-meaty bone that will make your dog immensely happy. At most grocery stores, the mass-produced rawhides of about the same size are at least $8. This is a real bone, with real meat (and real grease, so encourage your dog not to gnaw on it on the carpet) for a great price.

THE BEST SAUSAGE IN PDX! I think Sheridan's wrote the book on sausage making. The pre-made meat loaf rocks too. There is a huge bulk section of grains, oats, spices and stuff like that; its super great! I don't really grocery shop here, but i do get my bacon ends and sausage here.

Sheridan is a great shop filled with local and organic goods at fairly reasonable prices. I probably wouldn't go there for items such as canned goods, cereal, and things along those lines. However, for produce, meat, and dairy it doesn't get a whole lot better. Fresh, local, and organic. Three words that I like to hear when shopping for produce, meat, and dairy and Sheridan certainly delivers here!

Milk in glass bottles from grass fed cows? Check.
    Meat from local farmers? Check.
Fresh, organic produce that looks delicious just sitting there? Check.

Yes, Sheridan passes the test and is easily somewhere I'd add to my weekly shopping destinations.

Sheridan has the best meat department in the greater SE area. The staff is always friendly and helpful. Their produce is reasonably priced, and I could not live without their bulk section.
The only reason I can't give it five stars is because I find their prices for items such as cheese and other random small items to be more expensive than at other stores around town.

    I'm turning into my mother.

    Behold:
    - I've gotten way into Masterpiece (Theater). It got to critical levels last Sunday when watching Cranford I could not resist calling my mum to make sure she was watching, too. (Me, lying on living room rug while romantical cohabitator has been relegated to bedroom to watch Tim and Eric YouTube videos ((which, by the way, are totally the opposite of Cranford on Masterpiece)): "Are you watching?? The part about eating fruit in the solitude of their bedroom chambers because it makes the sister uncomfortable??!! I'm crying a little bit!!!" Mother, in bed while father has been relegated to living room to watch Sex in the City reruns  ((Don't deny it, Dad.)): "Uh huh." SYNCHRONICITY!!!

    - I'm inclined to buy two of the same thing if I like it enough: pairs of shoes, pairs of pants, spatulas.

    - I've developed this tone of voice, used only with my sister and husband, that makes me clamp over my mouth with my hands because it so eerily channels my mum. Used for phrases such as "For Pete's sake are you trying to kill me" and "if you'd just dust once in a while it would really make the difference."

    - I like to stock up when I grocery shop. I like a loaded pantry. I like several options for dinner (I cite this as the reason I do not cook. I, however, would most likely not cook were I equipped with all kinds of dinner options because I happen to have absolutely no knack for cooking. Times a week I "cook": 2, if you count going out to eat and offering to pay. Times a week my sweetheart cooks amazing meals that make me realize how lucky I am to have him, especially when considering he is an awesome cook who uses pine nuts and sun dried tomatoes and fancy Basque ingredients on a somewhat regular basis: 5.).

This is how my mother shopped. This is how I like to shop. None of this stopping by Trader Joe's on the way home to pick up two things for dinner. I need options, man. I need fresh fruit and vegetables and dry goods I can scoop out of a barrel in a way that reminds me of Little House on the Prairie.

So I like Sheridan. I love Sheridan. I like that it's small and general-store-ish and the people who work there are so nice and I can get really great cheese and delectable baked goods and deli stuff and the aforementioned fruit and vegetables and dry goods for really good prices. Also, they sell my favorite Chinese rose/honey soap for like 80 cents. I've seen it at other places for 4 dollars. Mummy would love that!

The only snag is they don't have the kind of selection you would find in a grocery store, but you could be delightfully surprised by what they do have. I could totally start cooking dinner like once or twice a week with this place on my side.

It is so refreshing to go to a good old fashioned market.  They carry everything... I made persian cookies and they had the rose water & raw unsalted pistachio kernals.  I made middle eastern and they had zataar.  The meat is from farms who believe in treating their stock respectfully... Sheridan is not pretentious about this in advertising, price or over graciousness of being honored you are there.  Feels sorta East coast in a really great way.  If you need to be catered to while shopping at a market go to Zupans or New Seasons and suffer the price consiquences.  Thank you Sheridan, I appreciate you!  ...so does my dog for your bones & your meat keeps my man very happy!

    Size does matter.

Also a pantry Cook i can always find a few huge bargains here.
sheridan has been keeping the Produce in Produce Row for um...I dunno.  Many Decades...before the 1970's anyway. Look for the Huge Fruit to find it. ( #6 Bus just before it turns left to cross over to downtown )

One time I find the Huge bottles of GOOD Balsamic Vinegar for just $12. So i buy 2. And am about done.  i came in to see if they sell Beer or wine, but: Whoa, Extra Virgin Olivie oil in GIANT Tins for about 11?
You bet.  I'll even pack it around all nite while carousing, and home on the bus or a bike.  (Tell people you are planning an Olive Oil party...and make 'em WANT to get on your tasty Guest List.

I buy anytime huge gourmet stock items are $13 or less (if I have half or less of a giant Tin left) or buy it anyway, and make Hummus and Tapas all month to celebrate the score - and some kinda crazy host Gift Salad Dressings and marinades to share with the BBQ Kings and Cocktail party  Mavens in our Lives.

    These are simple affectations,
but some of us need it in our lives.

Large supply, larger happiness. Thanks, Sheridan.

A local grocery store that has been around forever in Portland, Sheridan's is pricey, but you definitely get the feeling you are putting money back into this town. Outside grill offers the usual, plus specials, and an awesome veggie burger that is cooked by a lady that is essentially every bodies favorite Mom. Produce is okay, but is no Limbo or Farmers Market. Again, meats are decent, but you might have better luck at New Seasons. The deli serves some decent grub, but is a little spendy for what you get.
Sheridan's is a cool little grocery store with a history in Portland. They may not have the best of everything, but what they have is decent enough for all but the super food snob.

    There you were...
The crazy billboard sized sign that stares at me, mocks me, the fruit bowl face with big broad smile.

For a long time I tried to point you out to my Wife. She thought I was CRAZY.

Then... one evening... she saw you!

It was this event that made me commit to going in and seeing what you are all about. Sure, you kept sending me messages from neighbors and friends almost monthly; "I got this amazing steak at Sheridan's" or "I picked up these spices in bulk at Sheridan's" and there was the "You've got to check out the deli counter and the meat counter at Sheridan's".

It only took me five months to finally venture in.

When walking into the doors I felt as though I was venturing into the late 60's / early 70's. The store has a layout and look that brings you way back.

I was impressed with everything there.

The winner though was the stop at the meats... The butcher helped answer some questions about some really unique sausages (made in-house of course). We settled on trying two sausages; Chicken Basil and Kung Pao Chicken.

Both of these sausages are of the larger variety - I'd say they were at least 9 inches in length.

I brought both home and grilled them to perfection. The Kung Pao Chicken sausage was weird but very good. It literally had its namesake stuffed inside of it, peanuts and all.

The winner was the chicken basil. A perfect balance of basil, chicken, garlic, salt, and other glorious aromatic herbs and flavors, It will be a definite repeat.

I love Sheridan's--they are family run and have an old-fashioned emphasis on real food for a decent price. Wonderful selection of bulk beans, grains, dried fruits, candies, and a section of restaurant sized cans and jars. This is the place to shop if you have a big family, but don't do Costco. Really good cheeses, olives  and meats for a good price, good brands of dried pasta, oils, teas, condiments and other assorted foodstuffs. *Big* bags of frozen veggies, fruits and pastas. They care about good food, but aren't remotely pretentious with it--no rare specimens, but always quality.

They have a wide variety of creative handcrafted sausages. My absolute favorite at the moment is the duck/mushroom, but I did get a kick with the jackelope (jackrabbit and antelope sausage).

And the fresh fruits and veggies of course. My mom is addicted to the little purple bags of produce they set out front for a buck.

If you love to cook good old fashioned home-made meals, Sheridan's is your store.

I've been shopping at Sheridan on and off (based on where i was living and my daily paths) for over 20 years. It is, without question, the most interesting grocery in town.

it's a local farmers market, high quality butcher store, expansive bulk food store, perfectly stocked pan-ethnic market, can't miss deli and a just the basics grocery store all in one. It never leaves me hanging, and more often than not inspires me in new culinary directions. The prices are fair and the service is great. And it has this authentic urban feel that's been scrubbed and sanitized out of most downtown stores. Which is not to say it is creepy or dirty, it just isn't weirdly sterile and lacking in personality.

My new favorite Sheridan things are the minimally processed Jersey cow milk from a small dairy in Mulino, OR and their house-made meat loaf that doubles as a great base for a spicy, meaty pasta sauce.

IMO, you're not a real Portlander (or food lover) if you have not shopped Sheridan.

A hidden gem in industrial SE. I work nearby and regularly hop over there for delicious food. During lunch they have a grill full of delicious veggie burgers, hamburgers, cheeseburgers and bratwurst. The ordering instructions are a little strange, but you get used to them after the first time around. Sometimes it takes a little while to get your food, so you can also call ahead to get your burger and then pick it up in about 10-15 minutes if you have limited time during your lunch break.

There's a great selection of chips, drinks, fruit, dried foods, international foods and health foods, and there's an extensive deli section with hot and cold food items. There's beer too, if you're up for it, and a dedicated parking lot, which comes in handy considering the density of traffic off of MLK and Grand Ave. I seldom eat meat, but I've heard great things about the full butcher shop in back.

If you're looking to buy fruit, make sure it is in season. I recently picked up large pints of mouth-watering blackberries that tasted like candy. They were local and cheap and made my stomach happy.

Even if you don't plan on making it your local grocery story or place for lunch, this place is a real Portland curiosity and definitely worth a try. The odd shape of the store and the people that go there (from all walks of life) are intriguing to say the least.

If you decide to come here more often, you can make friends with the staff really fast. All of them will warm up to smiles and kind small talk over time, and you'll probably end up seeing the same people week after week. Feels like you're stepping into a small shop in a small town sometimes.

I had no idea there was such an awesome grocery store right on Grand!  Sheridan advertises produce, which they've got plenty of.  They sell their fruits and veggies fresh and cheap and their selection is vast.  But beyond that, Sheridan is a full grocery store, specializing not only in produce, but an enormouse and awe-inspiring bulk section!

Sheridan happens to deliver produce to the cafe/restaurant where I work and I've noticed that 1) their arugula is never too bitter and 2) their delivery drivers are always really friendly.

This place was very dirty when I was there & the staff couldn't be bothered for anything - let alone saying excuse when THEY got in the customers way.

The prices were pretty ridiculous - New Seasons was cheaper for the organic counter part of their almost rotten non-organic whatever from what I could tell.

The only thing that is slightly redeeming to me is they try to carry Oregon products & based companies. That's something - but I won't go back.

Seems my initial excitement about there sausages was premature. Although the descriptions are wonderfully cleaver and witty, the combinations of flavor and odd textures have put me off more than on sausage.
We are eating our way through a sample selection I purchased.  I'd say, so far its 2-3 stars for texture and flavor, 3-4 stars for creativity. If you want an ultra lean sausage these are fab, I am however a fan of fat in my casing along with lean cuts of meat.
We have a few flavors left to sample but I'm heading to Otto's, Edelweiss or Gartners next time I'm looking for a spicy sausage.

Went with a friend who is a sausage aficionado.   That could be interpreted quite different if I was reviewing a gay bar, but this is a really good hot dog stand in front of the store.

He was raving about the chicken Italian sausage but the woman that runs it talked us into letting the butchers choose a couple of chicken sausages of their choice.  That choice was delicious.  They called mine "Kung Pao", I think it had peanuts in it...  Whatever it had in it, it was really good.  $4.50

I also got the special of the day, "Drunk Pig".  It was a super tasty and spicy pork sausage, then she asked if I wanted chili on it?  Of course.  The whole thing?  $2.

Wasn't exactly fast food, but worth the 10 minutes to cook.

Amazing condiment bar, with the obligatory cock sauce...

Fresh fruits and veggies, plus a whole lot more

You don't find many good neighborhood grocery stores around much anymore, especially one that's also a local produce distributor. That translates to low-priced, fresh fruits and veggies at the Sheridan Fruit Company. Another plus here is the huge selection of organic and locally-grown stuff, which goes way beyond the fruit title.

You'll also find a diverse selection of bulk foods, beer , cheese, imported food and a meat counter. So basically everything you'd want in a good grocery store but probably cheaper and fresher.

Tip: Make a trip here every other week to bulk up on your staples, so you can keep the typical grocery trips for the in between stuff.

I work down the street from Sheridans so I end up shopping there almost daily purely on the fact that is convenient. I love that there is a grocery store near us and that I don't have to bring a lunch or buy a full meal at a restaurant. However their food is expensive, their fruit (which they supposedly specialize in) is always unripe and rock hard and above all else their employees are the most unfriendly people I've ever dealt with. I've heard they are not paid or treated well, so maybe it's not their fault?

I will continue to shop there until another option opens in the neighborhood.

I used to work very close to this store and I loved to stop in to get gummy worms or cookies when I needed a sweet treat.... but this place has much more to offer.  When there, I usually picked up some other necessities and often found that though there produce is a bit on the spendy side, that it is quality.  Also, there are times that they have great deals if you shop by sale prices (like when pints of organic raspberries were going for $4 elsewhere they had a special for $2!)  The rest of their products are not competitively priced, so I wouldn't do the majority of my shopping there, but, again, it does have some quality stuff and makes a good place to swing in on your way home from work to grab whatever your fridge or cupboards are missing.

They also have a deli that is great to grab a quality lunch on the go.

Sheridans has a nice comfy feel to it. It's kind of muggy inside....Sheridans is definitely a local grocer if that makes any sense. They have fans going....the employees are joking around with each other. I have seen someone BBQ outside......I would shop here if I lived closer but I don't think I would drive  a long distance to get groceries here......

The main attraction to this place is the bulk section. If you need walnut berry flour (just made that up) or some specialized sugar, you will more than likely find it at Sheridans.

They also have a fresh deli...meats, cheeses, beer....anything at a regular Safeway...no special prices or anything.

The only reason why I shop here is out of sheer convenience: it is the closest thing to a market within walking distance of my residence.
For a minute I kind of fell in love with the sausages and the grill cart, but then I got discouraged by the consistently rude service here, let alone weird vibe.
The other bummers are obvious limitations on variety coupled with high prices.  After paying $22.50 for a bag of pine nuts and being treated (for about the dozenth time) incredibly rudely at checkout, I am pretty damn sure I will be doing everything in my power to avoid ever patronizing this neighborhood spot any time soon.
Sad, really.  I'd rather give a 'mom & pop' shop my money in this economy but after all the attitude, it's worth it to go out of my way to a larger market if it means I won't be insulted as I'm being overcharged for my food.
I am never going back here ever.
It would be like asking for a relationship with an abusive ex.

    LOVE this place.

It's not flashy, and for the first 3 or 4 years I used to drive by it, I thought it was either a wholesale veggie market, or some variation of bum grocery store.   Turns out it's that, plus a whole lot more!!

GREAT Meat... what more needs to be said.    I cure a bunch of meat at home ( make bacon, pancetta, salume, proscuitto ) and the quality is top notch.  Just scored a grass fed whole leg of lamb for about 40 bucks.. now that's sweet.

They have a great cheese selection, as well as an awesome bulk food selection.   Always a good beer selection, as well as the odd and unique canned/dried international foods.

Produce can be hit or miss, but I've never gone wrong.. for the person who was complaining about strawberries... don't buy them in January.. they're all crap, no matter where you get them.  Some things are meant to be eaten in season ( like tomatoes and strawberries ).

Friendly service and super convenient location make this place a winner in my book.

This place is a sausage party. In the best possible way.

The sausage selection is amazing. I went in for some steak and after reading the descriptions of the 30+ sausages on display, I couldn't leave without bringing some of those babies home. The selection was a bit overwhelming, so I asked one of the meat guys which ones were his favorites. After naming a few, he said that this was like asking him which of his children were his favorite. They all are! Still, we chose three: the Deer John, with venison, garlic, red wine, rosemary, pepper, and coffee; the Drunken Pig, with pork, garlic, cheese, and Guinness; and a Cajun sausage that he pulled from the back with shrimp and I don't even know what else. As we were chatting, I mentioned that it was our first time in the store. He then gave us a couple of the Wild Blue Yonder sausage, with elk, blueberries, hazelnuts, and sparkling white wine, on the house to take home and sample, along with a list of all of the sausages they make.

We finally got around to cooking the sausages, slow and low like the butcher recommended. They were soooo good. My favorite was the Drunken Pig with all of its oozy cheesy goodness. T liked the elk one the best. But really, they were all awesome. I have been looking over the list of sausages and plotting my next trip here all week. I can't believe I waited so long to get in here and missed the summer barbecue season.

Go to this place for all of your sausage needs.  They make most, if not all of their sausages in house.  The one I'm currently eating is called Cherry White, the Sausage of Love.  It is a chicken sausage made with port marinated cherries and spearmint.  It is quite good.  They also offer more exotic meat sausages like elk and jackrabbit amongst others and their prices are pretty reasonable topping out at around $5.99/lb, but some are as low as $3.49/lb.  Of course prices do change.

There are other things you can buy.  I get some of my veggies here as well as eggs.  They have a large hallway in the back where you can buy items in bulk like various types of flour and beans and all that good stuff.

Do come here for the sausage though.  You won't be disappointed.

When we had a car we would visit Sheridan's regularly. It has a great fruit selection (obviously), but it also has a good meat, cheese, and imported food selection.

A little out of the way, but worth a visit.

Best selection of hot sauces in town!   ...not just the mass commercial sauces.

LOUSY! What a big disappointment this place. Horrible produce dept (yeah, and I'm not joking)  I spent 15 minutes last night cutting bruises off of a $6 container a strawberries. Overpriced in every single way.

For a fruit company, they sure have a teeny weeny organic selection. They had a beautiful selection of berries, but they weren't organic! I'm just not able to eat a non-organic berry. If a berry ain't organic, it's pretty much a toxic sponge IMO. The deli looked fabulous, but I didn't try anything. I went because it's called Sheridan FRUIT Company, and thus expected a wonderland of fruit and veggies, but no go.

This was my first time to Sheridan Fruit Company and I was immediately overwhelmed by the meat counter.  They have a huge selection of sausages to choose from and I was very excited to make my selection.  I chose a savory mushroom and a spicy duck with cranberries.  However, upon cooking up the sausages, I found the texture of both of them to be very dry and grainy.  I would go back to Sheridan but I wouldn't do the sausages again.

I ventured here for the first time yesterday after passing it on so many occasions. And it was a good choice.
I wish I had been in need of more bulk items, because when I turned the corner to see the bulk isle, I actually said "Woah." The front of the store was so unassuming, but what a great find! There is quite literally everything you would need to make a simple dinner at home or to start a small restaurant. The spices, flours, beans and grains were all reasonably priced and the selection was amazing! When I start to run low, I will definitely come here.
The produce selection was excellent and it made me feel less guilty about opting out of a rainy farmers market and coming here. I grabbed frisee, golden beets, concord grapes, cherry tomatoes, butter lettuce, honeycrisp apples, to name a few.
I don't think I could do my entire grocery trip here, but for produce and bulk items, I will certainly be returning!

Sheridan is probably Portland's best-kept lunchtime secret. And I'm gonna leave it at that, because already the parking lot is sometimes totally full! OK, OK, just do this. Enter store. Take a right. Behold delicious, extremely inexpensive prepared food. Eat like a king for under $6.

Sheridan's is Portland's own old-world mercantile right on MLK. They have an impressive selection of dried goods (enourmous wall of all kinds of flours), fancy food imports, and a top-notch deli counter. In the summer, the grill set up outside is a tempting offereing. I always come here for that random ingredient that I can't get anywhere else.
