I'm not quite sure why people are so down on this hotel. My wife and I stayed here for two nights en route to the national parks in southern Utah and it was perfect.

The hotel looks dumpy from the outside but the inside has definitely been renovated. The rooms are very clean and modern, nice bed, a choice of pillows, and widescreen flatpanel TVs. They have a free shuttle service from the airport, with free bottled water(!), and as far as we can tell it was free parking for our car too (we picked our car up at a downtown Avis location).

Oh, and our room rate? $69 a night! We grabbed it through one of the online discount hotel purchasing places.

The only reason we give the hotel 4 instead of 5 stars is that they still charge for wireless Internet access, $9.99 a day. Seriously? Who still charges for wifi in hotels??? If you're cheap (we are) there are a bunch of computers in the lobby you can use for free, and you can even print boarding cards at them.

Almost everytime I stay here I get a room that faces a brick wall.  Nice when you want to get some sleep, but depressing when you open the curtains.

"Gym" is tiny.  Has a few dumbells but little room to do much with them.  Has the usual ellipticals, treadmills and stationary bikes with built in TVs, if that's your thing.

Generally the hotel has a dark, depressing feel to it.

I stayed here one night because my brother had Starwood points.  The room we got was out back by the convention facilities, but overlooked the pool.  The room was a loft style with a living room & fold out couch downstairs, and a bedroom & bathroom upstairs.  The bed was very comfortable.

As of April 2009, this was the only Starwood property in the Salt Lake City area.  The exterior of the hotel is dated and tired, but the interior looks like it's been renovated.  My room was clean and had new furniture, carpet, and fixtures.  The bed was comfortable and there was a decent sized HDTV in the room.

Upon arriving, I realized that the property is also a convention center hotel so there were a ton of people milling around downstairs where exhibitors had trade show booths set up in the lobby.  Not exactly what I'd signed up for, but it wasn't too inconvenient.

I stayed on the Club Level and popped into the afternoon reception once.  A few items to nibble on before heading out for dinner and it wasn't too crowded.  There didn't seem to be too many dining options within walking distance of the neighborhood, but I just hopped into my car and was at The Gateway in less than 10 minutes.

Not a hotel that I'm dying to return to, but not a bad Sheraton on the whole.  My room rate was about $200/night in mid-April.

I love this hotel so I was a little confused to see the previous reviews. I spend a lot of time at Starwood hotels while traveling and generally always have a great experience.

When I checked in they automatically upgraded me to the Club Level on the 10th floor at no charge. I stayed for three nights and during that time I used quite few of their amenities. They have some of the cheapest parking I have ever encountered while traveling, only $10 a day. The Club Room served Continental breakfast every morning and appetizers and $2 happy hour cocktails in the evening. Room service was good and the general customer service was excellent. They have a starbucks connected to the hotel for all you caffeine addicts and a free shuttle too and from the hotel. The bartender Brian at the hotel was fabulous and the food was pretty decent.

The only thing that sucked was the fact that you can smoke at bars in Utah. Yuck, yuck, yuck, yuck, yuck. I'll be back when they stop that nonsense.

Where do I begin?

I guess I'll start on a positive note.  We had a nice big comfy bed, the hotel restaurant had good salads, and the hotel bar had good pool tables but the bar closes early.

Otherwise, the hotel kinda sucked.

1) It was impossible to conduct business in the business center.  The computers didn't work the first night, the copier didn't work at all.  There were no pens anywhere and the staff member I asked for help just responded with, "I guess it doesn't work."

2) We ordered room service for breakfast.  It arrived on time but the food was a little overcooked and way too buttery.

3) Asking the concierge for directions was like pulling teeth.  He wasn't sure where anything I asked for was and he just started pointing in different directions (I've never been to Salt Lake before).  I had to ask him at least 3 times to write everything down before he actually did.  He also gave me wrong information.  I asked a different concierge later on to map out the same places and he gave me perfect directions.

4) The elevators weren't working properly.  We were staying on the top floor and the elevators stopped at every floor every time I rode in them and it wasn't because people were waiting for them.  All the floor buttons were lit up all the time.  I tried all 3 elevators and experienced this with all of them.  Talk about ANNOYING.

5) The front desk staff was unhelpful and incompetent.  They had no record of our second night stay.  They messed up the wake up call.  When I asked about the hotel spa services the woman just responded with mumbled jibberish.  She didn't bother (or offer) to find out any information for me.

If you just need a place to rest your head and aren't expecting much, this place is great.  It's clean and spacious and quiet.

The Sheraton is near the center of SLC, within walking distance of Temple Square, State Street, and  several blocks from the old Salt Palace and Energy Solutions Arena. There are restaurants and yes, bars, a few blocks away. There is even a gentleman's club nearby. (Bars and lap dances in the shadow of the main Mormon Temple?! Geez , the winter Olympics 5 years ago changed everything!)

It is an older building (as most all downtown hotels are from any brand) but it has been completely remodeled and updated. The room is quite large; I stayed on the 9th floor (Starwood Gold member) and the king size bed did not overwhelm the room like some hotels. The decor is a bit too homey for me: the wallpaper with decorative leaf trim next to the ceiling, with everything in a green/mauve accent. Sheraton over the past 5 years has really upgraded their beds, and they are pretty sumptuous now for sleep, with 5 pillows and a comfy mattress cover. All upper rooms also have a small private balcony.

The room has been updated with adequate outlets (don't you hate business hotels with limited outlets, and almost all of them are taken by the TV, coffee maker and lamps?! I carry my own power strip, for my 2 laptops - Mac and PC,  2 cell phones - separate work and personal, blue tooth headset charger, and iPod charger.  Hell, thats six right there!). They still do turn down service in the evenings, which consists of a fresh bag of ice and a pillow chocolate, and your bedding turned down, of course!

There is an in house sports bar of sorts, an italian restaurant (Olio's) and a Stabucks concession in the lobby. The room for me was about $135 (before taxes) in September, mid-week. There is paid parking, but only for visitors. Guests can access parking with their room key.
This Sheraton is about 10 minutes from the airport, depending on traffic.

I've stayed here many times. Don't be fooled by the name "city centre". Its far from it. You can dine at the Mc Donalds across the street. But if you walk 3 Blocks away, there is a 24 hour mexican fast food joint that makes really good all fresh and all natural burritos and tacos.

Rooms were clean and quiet. Too quiet. As much as I hate Starbucks, I'm comforted by the site of this store in the lobby. It connects me with the feelings of being in the city. Yes, I I hate being stuck in the middle of the boondocks. I've experienced anxiety attacks in my room when I'm away from the city.
