10 reviews for Sheraton Portsmouth Harborside Hotel
I've never actually stayed at the Portsmouth Sheraton, but I've worked from there. Staff is very helpful, the internet is fast (big plus) and the breakfast is very good. I had the smoked salmon plate, I normally like my Salmon more pink that it was, but it was very good.
All the guests with us also had great breakfasts. We've had some not great dinners but overall a very good place and you can't beat the view!
This Sheraton is a large, attractive, colonial-style hotel on the edge of downtown Portsmouth. Though it is 2 blocks farther out than the Hilton, it is still easily close enough to walk to everything. Parking costs extra and is in a lot across the street, in the garage below, or in the small lot near the lobby (if you're lucky)
The staff here is very friendly, though it became apparent from all their recommendations that they wanted to keep it very, very local. When we asked about going over the bridge to eat in Maine (just a few miles away), they literally said "Aww, don't do that!" (We did anyway). This staff tendency became a running joke the rest of our stay here.
Though most of the "little things" were taken care of, most of the big things were not. I found the beds uncomfortable (way too soft), the rooms too small, and my laptop could not connect to the internet here (their tech support made a half-hearted attempt to solve it but failed to call me back as promised). My wife had no problem connecting with her mac though, so all was not lost. This hotel is also starting to show some age, with tired carpeting in the hallways, and a overused TV remote that needed about 100 ft-lbs of pressure to operate.
Breakfast in the hotel is a slightly fancy affair and didn't quite suit our families. It didn't help that the waitress flubbed several of our orders. We ate elsewhere after that.
At $280/night I think it's overpriced, but I'm not sure we could have done that much better for this location. Checking online, I see the nearby Hilton Garden Hotel is $30 less per night, so I would definitely consider that if I ever return.

My wife and I just stayed at the Sheraton Portsmouth for two nights for our anniversary. Who the fuck goes to New Hampshire for their anniversary, you ask? We do. Since we've been back on the East Coast dealing with family matters, we haven't had a lot of time to ourselves. Portsmouth is close to Boston, and my sister and her wife had told me it's a really cute, tranquil little town with some fantastic restaurants. Sounded like a good place to go and just lay low for a little.
Anyways, I picked the Sheraton because I'm a Starwoods member and they were offering a deal: pay the first night at the regular rate, get the second night for the cost of your birth year (ie born in 1980, pay $80). They didn't have a king-sized bed on any of the first 4 floors, so I was asked if I would like to upgrade to the Club level for an extra $20 the first night to get a king. I said sure because the Club level, I was told, included free evening hors d'oeuvres and free breakfast. To make a short story shorter, when I checked in I was told the hotel no longer was doing the free evening hors d'oeuvres "because of the recession" (the actual words uttered by the woman at guest check-in). I said, "Fuck your recession and fuck you! Now go get me some mutha-fucking pigs in a blanket and some goddamn chips and salsa!" (OK, I didn't say any of this and I hate pigs in a blanket). My point is don't tell me I'll get something if I upgrade and not deliver. This is TERRIBLE service as far as I'm concerned. On top of that, the "free" breakfast only went up to $9.99--again, this was never mentioned when I made the reservation. Some Club level upgrade. Anyways, they lose two stars automatically for such shitty service. Just a word to the wise.
Otherwise, our stay was nice. The room was a standard Sheraton room. Very comfortable bed, but I would opt for a few firmer pillows; they only have multiple ones of that super soft variety. Nice flat screen TV and excellent shower/water pressure. My wife and I had a great view of the Portsmouth harbor/Piscataqua River, which was perfect. The hotel has a really good gym with a number of cardio machines and a set of free weights up to 50lbs, which is excellent. Too often, gyms don't offer free weights or they don't go up enough in poundage. Plus, this gym had a couple of flat beds to do ab work on that could be re-leveled to work different parts of your abs. I like to work out in the morning, so this gym was really useful and functional. Finally, the hotel is on the edge of downtown and the Market St./Square area. You can easily walk to everything you need to see in Portsmouth from the Sheraton: restaurants, boutique shops, the waterfront, Prescott Park and the flower gardens. Great location.
All in all, we had a good two nights at the Sheraton. I don't think it's worth $240 a night, but since we got the second night so cheap, it was fine. Now they just need to work on full disclosure regarding their so-called deals.
Full disclosure: we stayed on the "exclusive" Club Level, complete with complimentary afternoon appetizers and daily continental breakfast (both of which were substantial and good) for free so this review may be a bit biased. (Free because we used club points)
That said, this hotel is pretty great. It's got a bit of that standard, Sheraton corporate feel, but it manages to still be warm and welcoming. The half-dozen staff members that we interacted with were all exceptionally (and I do mean *exceptionally*) pleasant, caring, and helpful. The room was clean and tidy, and as another Yelper noted, kudos on the recycling bin! The outdoor parking lot was $6 for 24 hours, which is pretty cheap considering you can enter/leave as many times as you like during that period. But why would you ever use your car, since Portsmouth's Market Square is within easy walking distance?
I'm not sure I'd want to dish out $250-$300/night to stay here, but I'd certainly recommend the Portsmouth Sheraton to someone who's not too worried about the price tag. I imagine this would be a great hotel to host a conference at, too -- having downtown Portsmouth that close is fantastic.

The Sheraton Harborside is a gorgeous venue for a wedding and a sweet place to stay while in Portsmouth.
The hotel itself is pretty new, well-kept, and well-staffed. The rooms are well-outfitted, the beds are comfy, it's just solid.
The bridal suite is on a private floor which is pretty cool-- you need a key card to get to it...which sounds awesome, but when you've got 4 cards and a huge bridal party, two photographers, people's parents, kids-- it's sort of a mess trying to get access in and out.
But! The suite is huge, multi-floor, and GORGEOUS. There's a balcony and a kitchenette. The light in there is just divine from a photographers' standpoint.
It's a great little spot and a short drive from Boston.

I helped the GF photograph a wedding here this weekend. It's a real nice hotel. They were wonderful for the wedding and the event coordinator seemed to have everything streamlined beautifully. There was not a glitch to be seen and I thought it was great.
And maybe it was the fact that I hadn't slept without a pair of snoring dogs between my feet for the last month and a half, but I finally slept through the night on that massive cushy bed.
I only regret not getting to order an in room Swedish massage. Next time, no question.

The only hotel I have ever stayed that actually provides each room with a recycling bin!!! This should be the standard!
The place was clean and nice. The bathroom in our room was a bit dated but oh well - they recycle!
The staff were all very friendly and helpful. Conveniently located near within walking distance of the shops and restaurants.
I would definitely recommend this place!
We even forgot to put up our "Do Not Disturb" sign and housekeeping did not bang on our door EVER! Impressive.
We stayed on the 2nd floor, so we didn't have the luxury experience others seem to have enjoyed, but I tell ya - for $279 a night, we should have come close to it. Carpets in the hall were loose and buckling, holes in the walls were patched with squares of wall paper, the shower head was old (at least use a low-flow!), the bathtub didn't drain well (I showered in 3 inches of water) and then to top it all off, they charged $5 for a liter of Poland Spring water from the mini-bar.
Places like this make me furious. They're obviously not spending their $$$ on upgrades and upkeep and you can bet they cut corners by giving lame health insurance to their employees (if they get it at all).
Don't get me wrong. I don't really need luxury. I mean, this place was clean, it had an iron, an A/C, parking, etc, but what makes them think it's worth $279 a night?!? In Portsmouth no less?!?!
Sheesh.
(p.s. normally we would have used Priceline for a stay like this, but my husband said it wasn't listed on priceline, but I see now that's incorrect)
My husband and I had our wedding here and honestly, we couldn't have asked for a better venue. When we first started searching for place to host The Big Day, we thought "how hard can it be to find a reasonable place in Boston?" Boy, were we wrong! Nearly everywhere in the city (and near by areas) cost at least $100 MINIMUM per person. Let's be honest, folks, neither of us like anyone that much to pay $100/person/meal :-). We decided to expand our search to NH and stumbled across the Sheraton Harborside. Before we even saw a price sheet from the hotel, i was skeptical. "It's a Sheraton, and therefore it MUST be expensive," was my first thought. Boy, was I wrong! The price was SUBSTANTIALLY less than hosting it anywhere in the Boston metro area. After a quick trip in a trusty Zipcar to examine the premises, we booked the reception and we're so thrilled we did.
The staff was incredibly accommodating and dealt with my many questions and requests. They even handled working with all of the vendors we had (photographers, DJ, florist, etc) to prep for day-of set up. They even held a special plate of italian cookies overnight that my grandmother had sent up (and some how managed not to eat any :-).
The weekend of the wedding they accommodated deliveries, last minute requests and changes. In short, they helped us all maintain our sanity and did it all with a smile :-).
I would recommend holding any large event here. The service and price couldn't be beat.

my husband and i stayed here once because it was somehow cheaper than the hilton garden inn. comparatively, the rooms are not as new and not as well maintained. the location isn't as good, and the internet in the room was completely unusable it was so slow.
as a hotel on its own, i would consider it ok. there is free coffee in the mornings by the elevators in the lobby. parking is very convenient and the rooms are clean. i did love having a recycle bin, and we never got bothered by housekeepers. there is a pool in the basement but we didn't realize they closed it pretty early and never got to go. :(
if the sheraton and HGI were the same price, i would pick the HGI any day. but i wouldn't argue with staying here again if they were cheaper.
