9 reviews for Sheraton Commander
One of my bestest friends had her wedding reception here. All the girls were to show up around 1 ish for hair, and makeup. The man and I figured it would be silly to take two cars, so I hopped on the trained and headed up to Cambridge.
You walk up to this cute little entrance, small sitting areas on both sides. I walked in the doors and it was beautiful inside. I had already been told the bridal suite is on the 4th floor, so I head over to the elevators... which were really, REALLY small.
The rooms are really quite like any other hotel I have been in... except for the flat screen TVs they have in the rooms. Very nice. The bridal suite had a small office, and a big beautiful bed. The bathroom was a bit small. And where was the jacuzzi tub???
Here is the good:
Everyone was very attentive. From the sales manager to the waiters to the receptionists... everyone was extremely helpful, and was very good at their job.
The food was amazing. When I first arrived at the hotel, I realized I forgot my bagel on the train (stupid, I know). So after all the heat, and the traveling I was feeling a bit light headed. The MOH and I went down to the restaurant in the hotel, and ordered something to eat. I had the Pesto Chicken Sandwich with french fries. It was really yummy... a big, think piece of chicken on a focaccia bread with a pesto-mayo spread.
The cocktail hour consisted of mini grilled cheese sandwiches accompanied by an espresso glass of tomato soup, stuffed mushrooms, and little pizza puffs. All very, very yummy.
The menu at the reception consisted of heart shaped ravioli, salad, a roasted chicken plate, or a veggie plate. All was very hot, and very delicious. The really neat thing, is they were extremely accommodating for the unique tastes of the groom. The poor groom isn't a big fan of veggies or anything like that, so his chicken came with fries and corn. Good stuff!
The not so good:
From what I hear, the bar was seriously weak. All I wanted to drink was Sex on the Beach... but when the man came back with a Cosmo, I was like whaaaa?? Apparently they don't carry all the alcohol needed for the drink I wanted. Huh?!
And some of our other friends were complaining as well. The prices were extremely step. I think we had 2 drinks each, and it cost close to $50 with tip. LAME!
So overall, we had a blast at the wedding and couldn't be any happier for the bride and groom. But I think for the price you are paying, you can get a hotel in the same area with a higher quality.

My best friend had his wedding reception here. Fortunately I live a $20 cab ride away, so I didn't have to cough up the $250 for a hotel room, but I got a pretty good feel for most aspects of the hotel while I was there.
Positive:
All aspects of the service were very, very good. This ranged from the sales manager who coordinated the wedding reception (she was AMAZING) to the waiters, bell hop, valet and staff. Everyone was personable, energetic, went out of their way to take care of you and was very good at their jobs.
The rooms, although small, were well maintained and fully updated. The two rooms I was in had flat screen HDTVs and recently updated bathrooms.
The catering was quite good. They were very flexible to the tastes of the bride & groom, and everything that came out (appetizers during the cocktail hour, dinner during the reception and brunch the next morning) was very tasty.
Location is fantastic - couldn't get much closer to Harvard Square unless you're sleeping in the Coop.
Negative
The bar was definitely lacking. The selection of alcohol was very limited, what was there was mediocre to poor quality, and the prices were pretty steep ($12 for a martini, and Beefeater was the only gin). One the upside, the bartender looking like a spitting image of Larry King (on the downside, he lacked the wit, sense of humor, and pulse, for that matter).
All across the board, the place is EXPENSIVE. I know it's to be expected, given the location and quality, but I still think it was overpriced.
I would highly recommend the hotel if you're planning an event, if you need to be right in Harvard Square, or if you can afford the extra couple bucks. Otherwise, I think better value can be found elsewhere.
Who doesn't love walking into a beautiful hotel lobby at the end of a long journey? Even better, who doesn't love a 4 poster bed that's big enough to accommodate 4 people?
No, there's nothing particularly amazing about the Commander. Sheraton is a national chain, you know. The lack of a pool is a distinct drawback, but other than that, it's all good.
Well, it's also super expensive.
They should really have a pool.

The Sheraton Commander is a solid property within walking distance from Harvard. Service here is excellent, but not effusive: the staff is nice, prompt and competent. The hotel is renovated, so if you've stayed here before and were putt off by the building's age, try again.

I agree with other reviewers about the good service and convenient location. The rooms were nicely appointed with a very classic decor, but the age of the building definitely showed through. For example, the paint in the bathroom was peeling, and the showers had no water pressure whatsoever. We had to wait a couple of minutes for the water to heat up in the shower, and it never really got *hot*, per se. For me, great service and nice furniture really doesn't make up for substandard plumbing...it's hard to be excited about anything else if you can't even take a hot shower.
Historic hotel that is within easy walking distance of Harvard Square. My room was pricey (over $200/night) and seemed somewhat small, but that probably has something to do with the age of the place. Everything was acceptable, but this isn't a fancy place or a something that I'd recommend for a weekend getaway in Boston/Cambridge. I'm not sure Boston hasn't much to offer in the way of cool hotels...anyways.

I stay here a lot because it's walking distance to a where I need to be. Friendly staff + clean rooms which I think were remodeled a few years ago. The bathrooms need some help - in a number of rooms, the bathroom door hits the toilet, so it can only open halfway. Dislike the fact that you have to pay for every tiny service in the tiny "business center" (which really should be called a printer closet.) There's always a cab available out front. About $38 from Logan.
I've only eaten here once - the layout of the bar/dining area is a but funky, with mirrors and TVs and some painful wallpaper, but it was decent meal on a rainy night. I'll stay here again the next time I'm in town...
If you are part of an organization that wants to book a banquet or something, their ballroom is really nice! If you reserve the big room, you have access to 2 bars and 2 levels - one with a dance floor and one with just standing room. It is near the T and taxi access and parking is less of a problem than it is in downtown Boston. Plus, walking in Harvard Sq at night is really pretty
I would avoid in favor of the Charles or the Inn at Harvard. Old without being charming. Nothing awful about it tough.
