5 reviews for Sheraton Columbia Town Center Hotel
It's murder to find, but worth the search.
Wincopin must be an old Cherokee word for "obstructed view" or something. This hotel, which is constructed in a kind of a sprawled out ladge architecture, is hidden off the main drag, and the little signs for Wincopin Circle are a bitch to find in the dark or in the rain. However, once I found the place, things improved fast.
I was provided with a very nice room in the lodge section. It's obvious that the hotel has been around for a while and the room had been renovated. The bad over-painting in the bathroom, and the fact that when standing in the bathtub my head nearly touched the ceiling, made it pretty obvious that some major renovations had been done in this property.
However, having said that, the place really is very nice. The staff was courteous and professional. I pointed out a couple of things in the room after my first night, and when I got back not only were they taken care of, but I had a nice Xeroxed letter from the GM on the desk indicating that if I wanted to complain some more that I should not hesitate to do so. Nothing like professional masochists for hotel staff. After that I left them alone - they earned their money, and my travel arrangements were screwy enough that they only had to put up with me for a couple of days.
The hotel has all the amenities - workout, pool (albeit outside), Internet, bar - all the comforts of home. It's conveniently located in Columbia MD to get to all those local destinations - Baltimore, Fort Meade, and only 20 miles north of Washington DC.
If you have business in the northern Washington DC area and you are looking for a nice discreet hotel, this Sheraton is a good bet.
Even with the AC on full blast, we felt super funky.
Rachita R. and I came through last weekend. The lobby was pretty nice, so we thought we would enjoy our stay until the guy who checked us in attempted to explain where our room was. At the end of our conversation, he even wished us good luck.
See, the hotel is split-level since it's built on the side of the hill. The room was on the 100 level but instead of being above the lobby or close to it, it was on the other side of the hotel. So, if you don't use the exterior entrance, you'll have to walk through 2 floors and a fitness center to get to the 100s. Our first attempt took us over 30min.
When we got to our room, it seemed really weird because all of the linen felt super damp. We had heard that this was because of the moisture in the air and the best remedy was to blast the AC. So, we did what we were told and turned on the AC while we explored the mall across the street, the Columbia Mall. We got back 5 hrs later to find the room in the same damp state. The sheets felt like they were dipped in water and spread. To make matters worst, the entire bed smelled like mildew.
Now on to the service:
I had called the front desk once before we arrived and once when we were there to ask them the best way to get to DC from the hotel. Each time they suggested we cab-it to the nearest metro station. I asked what was the nearest metro station. They didn't know. How did they not know? We ended up meeting a few people attempting to do the same and they found a really nice bus service online that took us from the mall across the street directly into DC for $5 (http://www.dillonbus.com). Why doesn't the front desk have that information? Don't get me wrong; they are really friendly but not informed.
I'm giving them a 1/5 but the extra star is because they are located super close to the Columbia Mall and the Merriweather Post Pavilion.
Good Luck!

So I'm writing from a very bad experience here.
I came in late, exhausted from a long road trip and was given a room. The Room itself wasn't bad, it just reeked of smoke. I figured all they had was a smoking room, so I just went to bed and dealt with it rather than make a big deal out of the situation. It was after 11 pm anyways.
2 days later, I get an extra 200 dollar charge on my bank account. I called and asked why and they stated that they were charging me for smoking in a non smoking room. Wow.
I'm a non-smoker.
Anyways, after calling and leaving 10+ messages to 3 different finance reps at their office, one (Andre Tyler) finally called back and said he would reimburse me. It would just take 7 business days.
It's been like 15 business days now. I'm going on nearly another 4 or 5 messages and no call backs. The charge was given to me on May 4th, and it's June now.
Not that this scenario will play out for anyone else, but it's an indication of how they do business.
Poorly Organized. Bad Service. No one ever picks up. NOT RECOMMENDED.

I've stayed here quite a number of times.
Here are the pluses:
The lounge is good, and it is ALWAYS the same bartender when I've been there. This is a huge plus in that it help ease the "I'm here against my will, a stranger in a strange land" feeling you can get when you stay in too many hotels.
The shrimp quesadilla at the bar / restaurant is good, if a little bit expensive.
It is generally clean and quiet.
Here are the minuses:
If they stick you in the older wing, sometimes your room's view can be pretty crappy, and I've had climate control issues the last couple of times. Could NOT get the temperature right for anything.
I get comp'ed for work, but the wireless internet charge is RIDICULOUSLY high, something like $10 I believe the last time I was there.
I've never eaten in the actual restaurant. I've ordered room service once, and ordered from the bar once. I have had catered meals while attending meetings, however, and the food was okay, but I am going to rate it overpriced.
All-in-all, an average place, but I don't think I'm going to stay here again unless everything else nearby is booked. It is a bummer not being able to get your room comfortable enough to sleep.
Sheratons are all usually very nice, but what makes this one stand out is the view that unfortunately some, and not all, of the visitors would get from their windows. We were among the lucky ones cause we got a room on the 8th floor overlooking the nice lake at the back of the hotel. It's a scenic little lake with a nice track around it where you could jog/walk/bike etc.
