Can you say cheapest man alive?

He lived in Wasilla but wanted to show me a bit of Anchorage before I left.  He wanted to get some privacy in rather than what we had been doing since some mishaps had made made the "they will never come into my room when.." didn't go as planned.

It was a sterile plain Jane room.  White sheets, no design involved.  It was like the wine in a box hotel, but the heater didn't have the little streamers attached to it.

He parked in their lot and worried about his car.   The permit says they are not responsible for personal property.  We didn't have any issues with it.

The view of the city.. also nothing to rant home about.  While Anchorage is beautiful covered in snow, again I have to say, it was better in the residential areas.

The kitchen closed relatively early and room service was a bit to be lacking.  The bed was firm and the sheets were clean.  The bathroom- also very ordinary.

This was one step above a motel 6.  For the purposes we went for, the hotel sufficed.  But for a tourist wanting to get a feel for the city and a romance worth "going out of the way and splurging with a hotel on a whim"... not so much.  Hardly memorable beyond the fact that it was in AK... and that's not saying much.

I was booked into a club floor room, and paid a higher rate expecting club floor amenities...  Not so at this property.  Snacks and beverages are only served during certain parts of the week and - not at all while I was a guest.  No free WiFi in the club lounge either.  Pity.

Seems like they shouldn't be booking people into room classes that are inconsistent with benefits available at the property.  Otherwise, the hotel was uninspiring and the service was just OK.

OK... I have been staying here for the past few years.  During this time, the facitily has seen a pretty good "refresh" of the rooms and public areas to the point that Im not dreading my stay there, but rather looking forward to it.  The bathrooms are really nice (smallish though) and the sitting area is quite comfy.  The beds are probably gonna need a re-do soon, but thats my only negative to the room.  For the most part, the staff has been nice but then when Im checking in at 2am after flying for 6 hours next to a teething baby, Im not really looking for a cheerleader on speed to greet me.   The thing that irks me the most??  $10 for parking...

One thing of mention.  this property seems to be the default property for a major "name your own price" travel site.  During the summer season, including 4th of July weekend 2 years ago, I was able to get a room for a huge discounted rate... I mean HUGE... like a store going out of business tomorrow and want to sell everything today HUGE... Gee, I hope they keep that going!

I have stayed here twice in the last week. The first one was last sunday night. I checked in about 10pm and the woman at the front desk was, well, LESS than inviting. She wouldn't know service if the "for Dummies" manual was an audio book. It was a quick interaction, but nonetheless it would have been nice if she smiled. The room looked nice, but the TV barely worked. It was a nice TV, but the cable they run in here doesn't include very many HD channels, and the standard def ones look like crap with a lot of snow and whatnot.

So when it came time to re-book for tonight I did the quick thing (sheesh) and rebooked here. I was once again greeted by Mrs. Frowny Face. She was STILL just as (un)friendly as before, and this time she was even less interested in talking to me.

This time I'm on the 5th floor which badly needs a carpet shampoo and walls washed. I was told that this was formerly a smoking floor. Great.

I had also heard from one of the employees that this hotel almost had its branding pulled by Sheraton. Then they started this major renovation.

In short, they still have a long way to go. I might as well have stayed at the holiday inn.

It looks nice, but the service is not good. When we checked in, the staff were overwhelmed by a tour bus full of people that were checking out and they said that they would have no idea whatsoever when our room might be ready. I inquired as to their standard check-in time but the desk clerk indicated that it would not apply. I tried to work in the packed and loud business center until the room was ready (around 4). Not a big deal, just annoying and NOT service-oriented. The next morning, I went downstairs to get a yogurt at the "coffee shop" in the lobby. The staff were very rude and wouldn't replace my coffee that their spoiled milk had ruined. Then, I attempted to get on the internet in the business center and had to go to the front desk numerous times and I had to speak with their tech support on the phone because it kept kicking me off. Pain in the ass! Later in the evening, in the bar, a patron had wanted to get a glass of wine for his wife and indicated this to the very rude bartender (who had ignored him and I for a good 15 minutes). Then, the bartender would not give the wine to the guest because he was taking it out of the bar (NOT out of the hotel, mind you). How ridiculous. The guy was just making small talk with the bartender by telling him at all...trying to say that he was doing a nice favor for his wife. There was a daytime bartender that was attentive to my coffee/water while I worked (a young woman) and the lady that cleaned my room was also great. The rest of the staff treated the guests like children or pests. This hotel is clearly FAR from service-oriented, especially given the price. The room was clean, so that was good, but we will be here a few nights not on business (not paid!) so we will switch hotels because of the bad service.

Do not believe the pictures from their website.

I went to Alaska looking forward to a 4 star joint and was disappointed in the quality of where we were staying at. The carpet and the interior was tacky and faded.

And, Mr. Front Desk, I understand it is 2am in the morning, and you might have had a bad day before we arrived, but it would have been nice if you cracked a smile at least once when you were helping any of us.

In fact, I never saw ANY of the employees here smile ONCE.

I was actually looking forward to my stay here while I was in Anchorage for the weekend, and apparently I was going to have my own room. So even after the... um - unpleasantness of the front desk, I went up to my room and was excited about my hotel bed.

Until I opened the drapes, looked at my view and saw THE FRIGGEN CEMETARY.

*closes drapes back*

Well, it was a nice cemetary. With blossoming trees and very green grass, but.... crap. I had to spend the night alone. After washing up, I jumped on the bed, that wasn't facing the mirror of course, and pulled the covers over my head.

As if something like bed covers is going to stop anything from getting to me if they really wanted to. Luckily I was so exhausted from the five hour plane ride that I passed out almost instantaneously.

I had a roommate the next night - thank goodness! But we kept the drapes closed most of the time.

So on top of this, my clumsy self lost one of my pink diamond studded earrings in one of the hotel rooms. DANGIT. I called the help desk and was transferred to security and they said they would investigate. They also took down my telephone number and address in case they found it. That was kewl.

But other than this, there wasn't much else of a positive experience. When we asked the concierge for recommendations for a good breakfast spot, he replied with, "Have you tried our restaurant here in the hotel?"  The next day we asked someone else and she replied with, "There's a Denny's down the street."

Is this what living in Alaska does to you? Makes you not give a rat's @ss?

Oh wells. I doubt I'd stay there again - not just cuz of the service, or the cemetary biz  - okay mainly cuz of that, but the location wasn't that convenient either. The Hilton had a much better location in downtown and from the brief time we were inside it seemed much nicer and people were just so much happier there. I came across 3-4 employees and they all said "Good morning!" to me with a SMILE.

Take some lessons Sheraton!

We still cant leave zero stars?
2/16/08- Heres the scenario:
Bad front desk information last night leads me to parking on the street overnight. Car gets towed. It will cost Andy $250 to get his car back.
The woman at the front desk assured me my car would be ok across the street and even made sure to mention the parking meters were free on weekends!
The Sheraton comped our room for the night we stayed (a $150 value) but refused to comp for another night. Never mind I wasnt even planning on being in Anchorage this long. I cant get my car out until Monday. Worst of all, its my friends last day in town and we had to spend it dealing with unreasonable management staff.
Basically, the management at the Sheraton did not accept responsibility for information given out by a front desk staff member who was not sufficiently trained. The front desk staff member was trying to be helpful, but just gave me really bad information. It turns out you cant park on the street anywhere in downtown Anchorage overnight. I'm traveling, how am I supposed to know that?

This was supposed to just be a synopsis, and there will be more to come. If the management of the Sheraton responds favorably to my request, I will definitely update this review.
I want the money for getting my car out of impound.

Other than that, I'm having a swell day and I hope you are too!
