My favorite non-Chinatown bakery. I love their selection of pastries. Most of the time they're fresh. Locations in Milpitas and Cupertino. Their bread is great for sandwiches or toast.

I will never ever go on Atkins Diet, not even if you pay me a million bucks! Cause I LOVE bread! All kinds of BREAD. Any kind of BREAD!
This place and Sogo are my favorite bakery. What you can find here are the types of Taiwanese/Hong Kong style baked goodies. Fancy bread with interesting ingredients. Not like the plain old loaf of bread found in Lucky or TJ.
Buns with all kinds of stuffings, red bean, cream, ham, curry beef, coconut, sausage, and many others. They got egg tarts, fruit tarts, even Portuguese egg tarts. And their cakes are fluffy and creamy.
I would have given them a 5 Stars if not for their "individual packaging." C'mon, save the planet, I don't need 12 plastic bags for the dozen of buns that won't live to see the daylight!

I've been coming to this Sheng Kee for a while now, and most of the baked goods are delicious. However, the prices will be a little more inflated than Chinatown since....YOU ARE NO LONGER IN CHINATOWN.
Obviously this is probably one of the only Chinese bakeries in the area so .... If you come here, then its going to be more expensive than Chinatown (which has more bakeries per square block than starbucks - well maybe not...)?
That said some of the stuff does get pretty stale, so you gotta make sure it's fresh; I generally don't get anything with mayo in it or anything that can turn bad easily.
The cakes though, are wonderful; pretty, spongy and light, and taste delicious, not too sweet and are worth it in their weight for the price they charge. Recently got the strawberry mousse and it was absolutely delicious, with a GAJILLION pounds of fruit on it....the birthday boy was very happy, and so was i! :D
Cash or Check only, which is kinda shady, but oh well - what did you expect!?
Will be returning to purchase more cakes for lucky birthday boys and girls!

I've learned that there's a connection with the women in my life and fresh bakeries! My wife's a bakery nut. And not as much so my sister in law too!
This, I think, Taiwanese bakery was so highly coveted by my Taiwanese sis-in-law from Austin, TX that just before a return trip home last week she insisted on stopping by this shop in the morning before I took them to the airport! This SKB is apparently big in Taiwan.
I think "the stuff smelled great" and I just eat whatever my wife puts in front of me (what do I know about fresh bakery stuff?!?).

The BEST and ONLY place to get cakes. For every birthday party my family get their cake from Sheng Kee. We always order the sponge cake with real strawberry fillings. They charge $6 extra for fresh strawberry but it's worth it when you eat the cake. The sponge cake always moist and perfect. Although they do not offer elaborate designs like Goldielocke and it is often frustrating to try and get a personalized design the taste more than makes up for it.
I have never tried any of their buns or pastries so the 5 star is strictly for the sponge cake : )"
I get full from bread.
I like the pastries under the glass and their egg tarts are pretty delicious :)

I am not a frequent asian bakery shopper. SO, I happened upon this one with a friend and she ordered mango pudding for me. I then proceeded to buy one of nearly everything else in the place. Boy they have a ton of great stuff. I picked up three types of hot meat pasteries for my boyfriend (they look great, but I havent gotten feedback yet). I also got a taro pastry and some taro pineapple bread. Ok, so that was all I bought, but I wanted everything. I loved the taro pastry. It was So delicious. I need to go back and get 10 more. I am holding off on the bread to share with family at a party tomorrow, but I just know it will be great. THis place has so many really great options and tons of beautifully made desserts. I highly recommend it. I cant wait to venture back there.

quite a reliable bakery chain.
large selection displayed appealingly, neatly labeled, even explaining that pineapple buns have no pineapple
basically a beginner store, individually wrapped items, store is clean
plenty of various bean buns, spongy cakes, soft breads and pastries
tasty sesame seed roll, purple yam
locations spread throughout the bay area
I walked in...felt 2 or 3 of the packaged items at the window. It was only 2pm and some of the items felt stale. I got an egg custard tart. Being that it's Union City the bakery items just seem expensive compared to places closer to chinatown. $.80 for an egg custard tart is alot to me. Places in chinatown are like $.40. I guess ya really gotta be craving.
I suppose being that it is in Union City people feel comfortable paying these prices. One thing I do not like is packaged bakery items. Seems they are attempting to keep them fresh because the turnover is not good. I prefer to buy something that I know have been baked the same day.
I like everything I've ever tried here, especially the meat pies and cream cheese bread! The cakes are good too, but you need to remember that it is a Chinese-style bakery and things aren't as sweet as at Western-style bakeries.
The service is spotty. It's always different people when I go and some are friendly, some are not. Some speak english, some don't (which isn't usually a problem, but I once got this guy who just wasn't getting that I wanted to buy an egg tart, even after I pointed at them like 9 times).
Cash Only
Good red bean paste loafs and great cakes.
You have to be careful choosing which red beans paste loafs to choose, since the paste aren't evenly distributed within each loafs. Wars have been waged on who gets the slice with the most red bean in it.
The cakes are great. Not too sweet to put you into a sugar comatose, but sweet enough to edge over the low blood sugar.

I love this bakery! I've literally tried every single cake there (unless they recently came out with new ones). No joke.
Cakes can range anywhere from $15-25. One of my favorites is the Japanese cheesecake which comes in a smaller size for about $8. They have fresh buns daily but the best time to get them is in the middle of the day. If you go in the morning, they may not have baked them all and if you go near the end of the day, they will have run out with some of the good ones.
Some of my favorites are Portuguese egg tarts & snowballs. Compared to regular egg tarts, Portuguese egg tarts are less eggy tasting, more creamy & with a burned/wrinkled top. They're so delicious here!! They're about $1 each. Snowballs remind me of a dessert I had in Japan - strawberry shortcake mochi.
There are different kinds of snowballs but the pink one is chocolate cake, whip cream & fresh strawberries buried in strawberry flavored mochi. Another kind I had which was good but not as good as the strawberry one is the green snowball - chocolate cake & red bean in green tea mochi. Each of these are about $3 and they're pretty big. If you decide to be a little piggy and eat it all yourself, you might feel like it was just too much sweetness at the end. So SHARE. One more thing - I've been here a couple times and they've run out of snowballs so I'm not exactly sure when the best time to get them is... I'm assuming middle of the day also.

This bakery is great! I havn't went here in a while but the bread is so good. The cakes are great and I have nothing to complain about. I tried the crossant pizza and its really good. The also had a jalapeno one with cheese and it was awsome. The service is great and I would reccommend this

The swiss rolls are worth dealing with the mean-looking cashier ladies.
(They're about $5 and they have like 6 different flavors.)

I just got a HK style egg tart. The taste was great. The bakery looks clean even though it has been there for a long time. I'll probably get a cake from here next time just to try it out, but from the egg custard to the breads, and the ambiance of the location, I'd give it a 4 out of 5.
Bottom Line:
Great place to try an Asian pastry if you haven't before. Awesome looking fruit and tiramisu cakes.
Thank you Sheng Kee for having a Fresh Chestnut Mousse Cake for me. I'm glad I didn't have to go to SF, Oakland or Milpitas. One slice put me in heaven and made me full. What a great way to start a day! I love to share you with my family. The cake was elegant with fruit -peach slices, kiwi, and strawberries-and chocolate triangles on top. I called ahead to make sure they had a chestnut cake.
Cash only-parking was busy this Sunday morning!
I love their cakes..
I checked out Mary's per the recommendations on Yelp but they didnt look as appealing. Stayed with what I know is good (fruit cakes) and was pleased as usual.

The BF and I had the munchies after class and decided to spend over $10 on individually wrapped pastries. He also bought a whole loaf of bread.
We were full, and I eventually fell into a food coma.
I woke up with the worst bread hangover ever, but it was worth it.
Next time we will purchase a whole cake and eat it in the parking lot and perhaps wash it down with Vietnamese sandwiches. Mmm.
Okay, time to go back to sleep.
When you were hungry and getting the shakes from coffee on an empty stomach... when all the American world offered was Burger King... when your best friend said "get some food so I don't have to listen to you complain about being hungry later" ... there, on the right, was Sheng Kee. You screamed, "park here park here!" and sprinted in the store. You had a hard time choosing between "hot dog pastry" (how much cahones does it take for a bakery to offer a treat with hot dogs in it?) and "ham and cheese pastry," chose the ham, then a date concoction, paid $3.75, and left happy.
It was good. The shakes are still with you. You did not complain later (you think).
And all was right in the world.

Delicious, mouth watering, stick to the roof of your mouth, good bread! Impress your family and friends with a decadant cake from SK. Stock up on any of the loaves of bread, but my all time favorite is the classic custard bread. Or just walk by and take a whiff without the guilt or calories.

UPDATE - 04.30 Used to be a four star rating..but now two. So of course Sheng Kee has good bread...it's a chain..they all have good bread..so what makes this one different than all the other ones? I went there to get some bread and the total was like a little over 5 bucks..maybe 5.32 or something random like that. I give the girl a 20...she's like..do you have anything smaller? It was the middle of the day so I thought she'd have change..but whatever..that's cool..so I give her a 10..she goes..do you have anything smaller? I mean..are you serious? So then I give her like...7 dollars..she's like..do you have exactly 32 cents? I nearly blew up at her..I mean..seriously...do I need to carry the exact amount of change everywhere I go???
The bread is good just as is the bread in every other Sheng Kee Bakery. The people there are not that nice though. The bread is also very fresh, but a little pricey for just bread.

Mmm, bread & pastries! ..for reasonable prices too!
I come here for their buns & rolls. I like their taro bun/twist & the hot dog bun 'cos they're just perfect for a quick snack. The breads are good too since they have a variety with different fillings.
One of my ULTIMATE favorites is their Tiramisu. I'm sure it's not authentic tiramisu, but something about it is just great. It's creamy, light, & airy.
The only thing that I'm not too fond of is the service. Sometimes the people ignore you by going to the back. Not too long ago, I was ready to pay and the girl had her back to me & continued to package bread. I had to say "Excuse me" about 6 times until the OTHER girl in the kitchen told the girl to ring me up. I know she saw me since she had a mirror in front of her with me waving at her. :\
Yummy Chinese pastries and desserts.
Cheap breads with savory toppings that are a cheap meal unto themselves.
Oh and Hong Kong takes on British Pies & Pasties YUM YUM YUM!!!!
This is by far the worst Sheng Kee Bakery I've been to. Customer service is HORRIBLE!! Baked goods are not as good as the other Sheng Kee I've been to in the bay area.
I love cake.
I bought a cake for my dad's bday here. Try the Japanese Cheesecake. A lady started talking to me in Chinese (she wouldn't stop talking!) and I was like, yeah, I don't speak Chinese. And she goes, Ohh...what's the difference btwn regular cheesecake and Japanese cheesecake? Well, lady, the difference is that the Japanese one is a lot lighter and fluffier. It's less dense and it disappears faster because of that. And it's so yummy. SOO yummy!
They, too, are a cash only place. I found out right when I got to the register to order (the line can get long) and I was like, shit! So I asked the lady to put the cheesecake on hold for me, which they don't do. I sped to the Safeway across the street, bought some waffles, and got cash back. When I came back, the line was super long again, but I was able to get my cheesecake.
They ask, "Is this for birsday?" and since it was, they put a "Happy Birthday" plastic thing on it. Hooray!
I LOVE fob bread!!!!!
Cakes and the pastry looked yummy but the lack of service bothered me about this place.
