After a handful of wine tastings, my wife and I were just adventurous enough to check out the Shelbi Ranch in Solvang. It's the anchor tenant of what used to be the Hans Christian Andersen Square, and I'm not exactly sure how to describe this bizarre enterprise.

When you step into the cramped cowboy museum, you're greeted by a woman sitting at a cash register. She informs you to order from a menu that includes 4 varieties of both hot dogs and hamburgers (each for $1), a handful of $1 sandwiches, a small selection of sides for $1 a piece, and "Danish Custard" milkshakes for $2. Once you've made your selection and paid, you head to a table somewhere in the maze of kitschy displays (including Shelbi Ranch t-shirts for $2). The food's about what you'd expect for the price, but the experience is surreal enough to warrant a visit.

The surrounding property is a two-story hodge-podge of equally bizarre bulk fabric, souvenir t-shirts, and western wear. There's some connection to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, which would help to explain why the place is operated more like a non-profit. Odd, but curiously charming. I recommend at least two flights of wine before heading in.

this place was great. the people were super friendly. $1 for happy trails sandwiches which included tuna sandwich, chili burger, steak burger, hawaiin burger, mesquite bbq chicken , etc. The only catch for them to be $1 is you had to buy $1 happy trail drink (pink lemonade, soda, juice of the day, tea-monade, etc). There are other items on the menu such as salads, chili, fries. I got a basket of all american curly fries for only $2. It's a pretty big basket and oven baked, so not greasy or oily. There was a mix of crunchy and normal fries. For dessert, you can get $1 for a scoop of ice cream. $1 for 2 homemade fresh cookies. or make it into an ice cream sandwich for $2.

I had the tea-monade--very light tasting. Was just okay.
Steak burger was good...very creamy thousand island dressing.
Chili burger was okay. Lots of chili beans.

The wait for the food was long because they forgot our order, but to compensate they treated us to free dessert. The chocolate cookies sandwiching a scoop of vanilla ice cream was delicious. so fresh and yummy!

While waiting for the food, i checked out the area.
On the 1st floor there are .99/yard fabric sales; 2nd floor there are T-shirts, overalls, jeans, and formal dresses. T-shirts , overalls, and jeans were only $2. The formal dresses... I'm talking about dresses that normally cost $60+ were only $10! Google it--Jody California brand. it was pretty crazy. I couldn't believe the price. They were nice sparkly prom or bridesmaid type dresses :) I bought a green one. This made my trip very worthwhile.

Will definitely like to come back.
