"Just bought my first road bike from Calmar. After several years away from biking, I didnt even know where to start in terms of what to look…" read more »
Haven't been here since 1983, when I bought a Miyata 912. I put at least 5,000 miles on the bike and other than some minor cable adjustments, the bike performed flawlessly. The wheels remained true till the end....
The fact that they're still around says a hell of a lot.

I've been a customer at Shaw's since 2000, when I came upon the shop accidently by driving in the parking lot. I quizzically spied through the front door and saw the Dave Moulton Fuso framesets hanging from the ceiling. Instant creditability, in my book.
However, you don't have to be a fan of handbuilt steel bicycles to truly appreciate all that is Shaw's. Both Terry and Jerry are reknowned bicycle fit experts par excellance and really take the time to get to know their customer's needs. I once witnessed Terry speaking to a customer for 30-40 minutes concerning bike fit (specifically about how popular women's specific designed bikes are a marketing ploy designed only to sell bikes) before he got her fit to a stock bike and out the door for a test ride. His perspective is that when you walk in the door as a newbie, he wants to sell you on our "sport", not just a bicycle. Additionally, they often take the time to explain repairs from a teaching perspective. That's admirable, considering most of their business comes from bicycle repairs. Keep in mind that this is a place where you don't bring your bike to get it fixed fast, just bring it to get it fixed correctly.
Shaw's is really one of a kind. The first time that I went, I spent a while trying to figure out where the store was. There is a sign in the front that says "Shaw's Lightweight Cycles", but all that I saw was a video store. After a while, I noticed a sign that directed visitors to the back of the building.
When I got inside, there were three guys chatting about bike stuff. I brought in a rather obscure bike for a non-standard replacement part, but Terry Shaw had no problem doing the repair. It took him a little while, but the work was high quality and fairly priced. And Terry will talk your ear off while you're there - he used to be a Cat 2 racer, and knows everything there is about bikes (seriously).
I know of a bunch of people who have bought bikes from Shaw's. He isn't cheap, but he sells quality bikes and provides good service. I have also heard that he is one of the best bike fitters in the Bay Area - some serious riders who I really respect go to him to fit their bikes.
